The effects on the spin state of an electron in a time independent electric field are examined. The probability of spin flipping is calculated, and other effects are studied using the minimally coupled Dirac equation.
The electron spin in a semiconductor quantum dot can be coherently controlled by an external electric field, an effect called electric-dipole spin resonance (EDSR). Several mechanisms can give rise to the EDSR effect, among which there is a hyperfine mechanism, where the spin-electric coupling is mediated by the electron-nucleus hyperfine interaction. Here, we investigate the influence of frequency modulation (FM) on the spin-flip efficiency. Our results reveal that FM plays an important role in the hyperfine mechanism. Without FM, the electric field almost cannot flip the electron spin; the s…
The spins of atoms and atom-like systems are among the most coherent objects in which to store quantum information. However, the need to address them using oscillating magnetic fields hinders their integration with quantum electronic devices. Here we circumvent this hurdle by operating a single-atom `flip-flop' qubit in silicon, where quantum information is encoded in the electron-nuclear states of a phosphorus donor. The qubit is controlled using local electric fields at microwave frequencies, produced within a metal-oxide-semiconductor device. The electrical drive is mediated by the modulati…
An important goal in quantum information processing is to reduce the duration of quantum-logical operations. Motivated by this, we provide a theoretical analysis of electrically induced fast dynamics of a single-electron spin-orbit qubit. We study the example of a one-dimensional quantum dot with Rashba spin-orbit interaction and harmonic driving, and focus on the case of strong driving, when the real-space oscillation amplitude of the driven electron is comparable to the width of its wave function. We provide simple approximate analytical relations between the qubit Larmor frequency, the shor…
We present a comprehensive theoretical investigation of the light absorption rate at the Pb/Ge(111) surface with strong spin-orbit coupling. Our calculations show that electron spin-flip transitions cause as much as 6% of the total light absorption, representing one order of magnitude enhancement over Rashba-like systems. Thus, it is demonstrated that a substantial part of the light irradiating this nominally non-magnetic surface is attenuated in spin flip processes. Remarkably, the spin-flip transition probability is structured in well defined hot spots within the Brillouin zone where the ele…
An idea of employing the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana (LZSM) dynamics to flip a spin of a single ground state hole is introduced and explored by a time-dependent simulation. This configuration interaction study considers a hole confined in a quantum molecule formed in InSb $\langle111\rangle$ quantum wire by application of an electrostatic potential. An up-down spin-mixing avoided crossing is formed by non-axial terms in the Kohn-Luttinger Hamiltonian and the Dresselhaus spin-orbit one. Manipulation of the system is possible by dynamic change of external vertical electric field, which ena…
We consider joint effects of tunneling and spin-orbit coupling on driven by electric field spin dynamics in a double quantum dot with a multi-level resonance scenario. We demonstrate that tunneling plays the crucial role in the formation of the Rabi-like spin-flip transitions. In contrast to the linear behavior for weak electric fields, the spin flip rate becomes much smaller than expected for the two-level model and shows oscillating dependence on the driving field amplitude in stronger fields. In addition, the full spin flip is very difficult to achieve in a multi-level resonant system. Thes…
We study the anisotropic orbital effect in the electric field tunability of the phonon induced spin-flip rate in quantum dots (QDs). Our study shows that anisotropic gate potential enhances the spin-flip rate and reduces the level crossing point to a lower quantum dot radius due to the suppression of the Land$\acute{e}$ g-factor towards bulk crystal. In the range of $10^4-10^6$ V/cm, the electric field tunability of the phonon induced spin-flip rate can be manipulated through strong Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. These results might assist the development of a spin based solid state quantum …
We study the electric-dipole transitions for a single electron in a double quantum dot located in a semiconductor nanowire. Enabled by spin-orbit coupling (SOC), electric-dipole spin resonance (EDSR) for such an electron can be generated via two mechanisms: the SOC-induced intradot pseudospin states mixing and the interdot spin-flipped tunneling. The EDSR frequency and strength are determined by these mechanisms together. For both mechanisms the electric-dipole transition rates are strongly dependent on the external magnetic field. Their competition can be revealed by increasing the magnetic f…
We develop a theoretical description of transport through quantum dots connected to reservoirs via spin-polarized ballistic contacts. Rate equations account for spin accumulation inside the dot, electron-electron interactions, and stochastic fluctuations. It is shown that both the ac response (admittance) and the frequency-dependent shot noise are governed by spin-flip scattering, which can be used to detect spin polarization and spin-flip processes in the dot.
We present a theory of the current-voltage characteristics of a magnetic domain wall between two highly spin-polarized materials, which takes into account the effect of the electrical bias on the spin-flip probability of an electron crossing the wall. We show that increasing the voltage reduces the spin-flip rate, and is therefore equivalent to reducing the width of the domain wall. As an application, we show that this effect widens the temperature window in which the operation of a unipolar spin diode is nearly ideal.
The recently developed semiclassical theory for magnetoelectronic circuits is applied to a transistor-like device consisting of a normal metal island and three magnetic terminals. The electric current between source and drain can be controlled by the magnetization of a ``base'' reservoir up to distances of the order of the spin-flip diffusion length.
Single magnetic molecules may be the smallest functional magnets. An electric-field controllable spin state of magnetic molecules is of fundamental importance for applications while its realization remains challenging. To date the observed spin-electric interaction based on spin-orbit coupling or spin dipole coupling is useful to tune fine spin structures but too weak to flip the spin state. In this work, we propose a new mechanism to realize enhanced spin-electric coupling and flip the spin states by tuning the spin superexchange between local spins. Using first-principles calculations and He…
Recently, the possibility of an all electrical scheme of preparation and readout for a single spin state in a single quantum dot attached to spin biased leads has been shown [F. Chi et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 075310 (2010)]. However, spin scattering mechanisms have been omitted. To remedy this lack we consider the influence of the spin-flip scattering process on the proposed preparation and readout scheme.
We apply an invariant-based inverse engineering method to control by time-dependent electric fields electron spin dynamics in a quantum dot with spin-orbit coupling in a weak magnetic field. The designed electric fields provide a shortcut to adiabatic processes that flips the spin rapidly, thus avoiding decoherence effects. This approach, being robust with respect to the device-dependent noise, can open new possibilities for the spin-based quantum information processing.
The electronic properties of antimonene, single-layer Sb, are attracting great attention. In this paper, spin transport in armchair antimonene nanoribbon (ASbNR) is investigated. Following the tight-binding model, we calculate both the transmission probability and the conductance by means of the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method. The effects of an external electric field vertical to the ribbon plane are explored. Our results indicate that the spin-flip rate increases with the vertical electric field. Disorder effects on spin transport are addressed by considering the presence of c…
We consider the phase-coherent transport of electrons passing through an Aharonov-Bohm ring while interacting with a tunnel charge in a double quantum dot (representing a charge qubit) which couples symmetrically to both arms of the ring. For Aharonov-Bohm flux Phi_AB=h/2e we find that electrons can only be transmitted when they flip the charge qubit's pseudospin parity an odd number of times. The perfect correlations of the dynamics of the pseudospin and individual electronic transmission and reflection events can be used to entangle the charge qubit with an individual passing electron.
A "spin-flip transistor" is a lateral spin valve consisting of ferromagnetic source drain contacts to a thin-film normal-metal island with an electrically floating ferromagnetic base contact on top. We analyze the \emph{dc}-current-driven magnetization dynamics of spin-flip transistors in which the source-drain contacts are magnetized perpendicularly to the device plane by magnetoelectronic circuit theory and the macrospin Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. Spin flip scattering and spin pumping effects are taken into account. We find a steady-state rotation of the base magnetization at GHz freq…
Spin transitions driven by a periodically varying electric potential in dilute fluorinated graphene quantum dots are investigated. Flakes of monolayer graphene are considered as well as electrostatic electron traps induced in bilayer graphene. The stationary states are obtained within the tight-binding approach and are used to the basis of eigenstates to describe the system dynamics. The dilute fluorination of the top layer lifts the valley degeneracy of the confined states and attenuates the orbital magnetic dipole moments due to current circulation within the flake. Moreover, the spin-orbit …
The stationary state of the spin-Hall bar is studied in the framework of a variational approach that includes non-equilibrium screening effects. The minimization of the power dissipated in the system is performed with taking into account the spin-flip relaxation and the global constrains due to the electric generator and global charge conservation. The calculation is performed in both approximations of negligible spin-flip scattering and strong spin-flip scattering. In both cases, the expressions of the spin-accumulation and the longitudinal and transverse pure spin-currents are derived analyt…
We performed non-local electrical measurements of a series of Py/Cu lateral spin valve devices with different Cu thicknesses. We show that both the spin diffusion length of Cu and the apparent spin polarization of Py increase with Cu thickness. By fitting the results to a modified spin-diffusion model, we show that the spin diffusion length of Cu is dominated by spin-flip scattering at the surface. In addition, the dependence of spin polarization of Py on Cu thickness is due to a strong spin-flip scattering at the Py/Cu interface.
Electron dynamics in quantum dots manifests itself in spin-flip spectra through electric dipole spin resonance (EDSR). Near a neutrality point separating two different singlet charged states of a double quantum dot, charge dynamics inside a $2\times2$ singlet manifold can be described by a 1/2-pseudospin. In this region, charge dynamics is highly nonlinear and strongly influenced by flopping its soft pseudospin mode. As a result, the responses to external driving include first and second harmonics of the driving frequency and their Raman satellites shifted by the pseudospin frequency. In EDSR …
We describe dynamics of spin and valley transitions driven by alternating electric fields in quantum dots defined electrostatically within semiconducting carbon nanotubes (CNT). We use the tight-binding approach to describe the states localized within a quantum dot taking into account the circumferential spin-orbit interaction due to the s-p hybridization and external fields. The basis of eigenstates localized in the quantum dot is used in the solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation for description of spin flips and inter-valley transitions that are driven by periodic perturbation…
We perform a theoretical study of radiative decay of dark intravalley excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers. This decay necessarily involves an electronic spin flip. The intrinsic decay mechanism due to interband spin-flip dipole moment perpendicular to the monolayer plane, gives a rate about 100--1000 times smaller than that of bright excitons. However, we find that this mechanism also introduces an energy splitting due to a local field effect, and the whole oscillator strength is contained in the higher-energy component, while the lowest-energy state remains dark and needs a…
We present a detailed analysis of the spin-flip excitations induced by a periodic time-dependent electric field in the Rashba prototype Au(111) noble metal surface. Our calculations incorporate the full spinor structure of the spin-polarized surface states and employ a Wannier-based scheme for the spin-flip matrix elements. We find that the spin-flip excitations associated with the surface states exhibit an important angular modulation which is completely absent in the standard Rashba model \cite{rashba}. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the maximum of the calculated spin-flip absorption rate …
The control and generation of spin-polarized currents (SPCs) without magnetic materials and external magnetic field is a big challenge in spintronics and normally requires spin-flip mechanism. In this work, we propose a novel method to control and generate SPCs in stanene nanoribbons in the quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator regime by all electrical means without spin-flip mechanism. This is achieved with intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in stanene nanoribbons by tuning the relative phase of spin up and down electrons using a gate voltage, which creates a time delay between them thereby producing …
A new spinmotive force is predicted in ferromagnets with spin-orbit coupling. By extending the theory of spinmotive force, we show that a time-varying electric field can induce a spinmotive force with static and uniform magnetization. This spinmotive has two advantages; it can be detected free from the inductive voltage owing to the absence of dynamical magnetization and it can be tuned by electric fields. To observe the effect, we propose two experimental setups: electric voltage measurement in a single ferromagnet and spin injection from a ferromagnet into an attached nonmagnetic conductor.
We present a novel design for a single-mode, truly sub-wavelength THz disk laser based on a nano-composite gain medium comprising an array of metal/ferromagnetic point contacts embedded in a thin dielectric layer. Stimulated emission of light occurs in the point contacts as a result of spin-flip relaxation of spin-polarized electrons that are injected from the ferromagnetic side of the contacts. Ultra-high electrical current densities in the contacts and a dielectric material with a large refractive index, neither condition being achievable in conventional semiconductor media, allows the thres…
Traditionally the charge ratchet effect is considered as a consequence of either the spatial symmetry breaking engineered by asymmetric periodic potentials, or time asymmetry of the driving fields. Here we demonstrate that electrically and magnetically driven quantum dissipative systems with spin-orbit interactions represent an exception from this standard idea. In contrast to the so far well established belief, a charge ratchet effect appears when both the periodic potential and driving are symmetric. We show that the source of this paradoxical charge ratchet mechanism is the coexistence of q…
We consider states bound at the flip of the electric field in buckled silicene. Along the electric flip lines a topological confinement is formed with the orientation of the charge current and the resulting magnetic dipole moment determined by the valley index. We compare the topological confinement to the trivial one that is due to a local reduction of the vertical electric field but without energy gap inversion. For the latter the valley does not protect the orientation of the magnetic dipole moment from inversion by external magnetic field. We demonstrate that the topologically confined sta…
Spin-flip Raman scattering of electrons and heavy-holes is studied for resonant excitation of neutral and charged excitons in a CdTe/Cd$_{0.63}$Mg$_{0.37}$Te quantum well. The spin-flip scattering is characterized by its dependence on the incident and scattered light polarization as well as on the magnetic field strength and orientation. Model schemes of electric-dipole allowed spin-flip Raman processes in the exciton complexes are compared to the experimental observations, from which we find that lowering of the exciton symmetry, time of carrier spin relaxation, and mixing between electron st…
Spin transistors (whose on-off operation is achieved by electric-field-controlled spin orientation 1), if realized, can revolutionize modern electronics through the implementation of a faster and a more energy-efficient performance as well as non-volatile data storage 2, 3. The original proposal by Datta and Das 1 that relies on electric-field-controlled spin precession in a semiconductor channel faces significant challenges including inefficient spin injection, spin relaxation and spread of the spin precession angle 4, 5. Recent demonstration of electric-field switching of magnetic order 6-8 …
We use the nuclear spin coherence of $^{31}$P donors in $^{28}$Si to determine flip-flop rates of donor electron spins. Isotopically purified $^{28}$Si crystals minimize the number of $^{29}$Si flip-flops, and measurements at 1.7 K suppress electron spin relaxation. The crystals have donor concentrations ranging from $1.2\times10^{14}$ to $3.3\times10^{15}~\text{P/cm}^3$, allowing us to detect how electron flip-flop rates change with donor density. We also simulate how electron spin flip-flops can cause nuclear spin decoherence. We find that when these flip-flops are the primary cause of decoh…
We develop an effective tight-binding Hamiltonian for spin-orbit (SO) interaction in bent carbon nanotubes (CNT) for the electrons forming the $π$ bonds between the nearest neighbor atoms. We account for the bend of the CNT and the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction which introduce mixing of $π$ and $σ$ bonds between the $p_z$ orbitals along the CNT. The effect contributes to the main origin of the SO coupling--the folding of the graphene plane into the nanotube. We discuss the bend-related contribution of the SO coupling for resonant single-electron spin and charge transitions in a double quant…
Through the theoretical study of electron spin lifetime in the 2DEG of doped Si, we highlight a dominant spin relaxation mechanism induced by the impurity central-cell potential near an interface via intervalley electron scattering. At low temperatures and with modest doping, this Yafet spin flip mechanism can become much more important than the Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation indcued by the structural Rashba spin-orbit coupling field. As the leading-order impurity-induced spin flip happens only between two non-opposite valleys in Si, two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) systems in Si MOSFETs or…
We propose an entanglement mechanism of nuclear spins in quantum dots driven by the electric current accompanied by the spin flip. This situation is relevant to a leakage current in spin-blocked regions where electrons cannot be transported unless their spins are flipped. The current gradually increases the components of larger total spin of nuclei. This correlation among the nuclear spins markedly enhances the spin-flip rate of electrons and hence the leakage current. The enhancement of the current is observable when the residence time of electrons in the quantum dots is shorter than the deph…
We investigate the diffusive electron transport in conductors with spatially inhomogeneous magnetic properties taking into account both impurity and normal scattering. It is found that the additional interface resistance that arises due to the magnetic inhomogeneity depends essentially on their spatial characteristics. The resistance is proportional to the spin flip time in the case when the magnetic properties of the conducting system vary smoothly enough along the sample. It can be used to direct experimental investigation of spin flip processes. In the opposite case, when magnetic character…
Magnon drag effect induced by an applied electric field in ferromagnetic metals is theoretically studied by a microscopic calculation of the force on magnons arising from magnon emission/absorption and scattering due to driven electrons. It is shown that magnon scattering contribution dominates over the emission/absorption one in a wide temperature regime in good metals with long elastic lifetime $\taue$, as the latter has a relative suppression factor of $(\Deltasd\taue)^{-2}$ due to the electron spin flip by the magnon, where $\Deltasd$ is the $sd$ exchange interaction energy. Spin-transfer …
This paper presents a study of dc photocurrents in biased insulators to the third order in the electric field. We find three photocurrents which are characterized by physical divergences of the third-order free-electron polarization susceptibility. In the absence of momentum relaxation and saturation effects, these dc photocurrents grow as $t^n$ $(n=2,1,0)$ with illumination time. The photocurrents are dubbed \textit{jerk}, third-order injection, and third-order shift current, respectively, and are generalizations of the second-order injection and shift currents of the bulk photovoltaic effect…
{\it Ab initio} investigations of the full static dielectric response and Born effective charge of BN nanotubes (BN-NTs) have been performed for the first time using finite electric field method. It is found that the ionic contribution to the static dielectric response of BN-NTs is substantial and also that a pronounced chirality-dependent oscillation is superimposed on the otherwise linear relation between the longitudinal electric polarizability and the tube diameter ($D$), as for a thin dielectric cylinderical shell. In contrast, the transverse dielectric response of the BN-NTs resemble the…
