We analyze the transport of heat along a chain of particles interacting through anharmonic po- tentials consisting of quartic terms in addition to harmonic quadratic terms and subject to heat reservoirs at its ends. Each particle is also subject to an impulsive shot noise with exponentially distributed waiting times whose effect is to change the sign of its velocity, thus conserving the en- ergy of the chain. We show that the introduction of this energy conserving stochastic noise leads to Fourier law. The behavior of thels heat conductivity for small intensities of the shot noise and large system sizes are found to obey a finite-size scaling relation. We also show that the heat conductivity is not constant but is an increasing monotonic function of temperature.
Systems in which the heat flux depends on the direction of the flow are said to present thermal rectification. This effect has attracted much theoretical and experimental interest in recent years. However, in most theoretical models the effect is found to vanish in the thermodynamic limit, in disagreement with experiment. The purpose of this paper is to show that the rectification may be restored by including an energy-conserving noise which randomly flips the velocity of the particles with a certain rate $λ$. It is shown that as long as $λ$ is non-zero, the rectification remains finite in the…
In this note we study the approach to equilibrium of a chain of anharmonic oscillators. We find indications that a sufficiently large system always relaxes to the usual equilibrium distribution. There is no sign of an ergodicity threshold. The time however to arrive to equilibrium diverges when $g \to 0$, $g$ being the anharmonicity.
We consider $d$-dimensional chains of (an)harmonic oscillators we perturb by a noise conserving energy or energy and momentum. We review the thermal conduction properties we obtained for these systems and conclude by several open questions.
A family of quantum anharmonic oscillators is studied in any finite spatial dimension in the scheme of first quantization and the investigation of their eigenenergies is presented. The statistical properties of the calculated eigenenergies are compared with the theoretical predictions inferred from the Random Matrix theory. Conclusions are derived.
In the present article a family of quantum anharmonic oscillators is studied using Hermite's function basis (Fock's basis) in the Hilbert space. The numerical investigation of the eigenenergies of that family is presented. The statistical properties of the calculated eigenvalues are compared with the theoretical predictions derived from the Random Matrix Theory. Conclusions are inferred.
We here numerically investigate the heat transport behavior in a one-dimensional lattice with a soft-type (ST) anharmonic interparticle interaction. It is found that with the increase of system's temperature, while the introduction of ST anharmonicity softens phonons and decreases their velocities, this type of nonlinearity like its counterpart of hard type (HT), can still not be able to fully damp the longest wave phonons. Therefore, an anomalous temperature dependent heat transport with certain scaling properties similarly to those in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam like systems with HT interactions ca…
The microcanonical effective partition function, constructed from a Feynman-Hibbs potential, is derived using generalized ensemble theory. The form of the effective Hamiltonian is amenable to Monte Carlo simulation techniques and the relevant Metropolis function is presented. Using the derived expression for the microcanonical effective partition function, the low-temperature entropy of a proton in an anharmonic potential is numerically evaluated and compared with the exact quantum mechanical canonical result.

Using methods of stochastic dynamics, we have studied stationary states in the underdamped anharmonic stochastic oscillators driven by Cauchy noise. Shape of stationary states depend both on the potential type and the damping. If the damping is strong enough, for potential wells which in the overdamped regime produce multimodal stationary states, stationary states in the underdamped regime can be multimodal with the same number of modes like in the overdamped regime. For the parabolic potential, the stationary density is always unimodal and it is given by the two dimensional $α$-stable density…
Stationary states of overdamped anharmonic stochastic oscillators driven by Lévy noise are typically multimodal. The very same situation is recorded for an underdamped Lévy noise driven motion in single-well potentials with linear friction. Within current manuscript we relax the assumption that the friction experienced by a particle is linear. Using computer simulations, we study underdamped motion in single-well potentials in the regime of nonlinear friction. We demonstrate that it is relatively easy to observe multimodality in the velocity distribution as it is determined by the friction its…
We consider application of the multiple time delayed feedback for control of anharmonic (nonlinear) oscillators subject to noise. In contrast to the case of a single delay feedback, the multiple one exhibits resonances between feedback and nonlinear harmonics, leading to a resonantly strong or weak oscillation coherence even for a small anharmonicity. Analytical results are confirmed numerically for van der Pol and van der Pol-Duffing oscillators. Highlights: > We construct general theory of noisy limit-cycle oscillators with linear feedback. > We focus on coherence and "reliability" of oscill…
We consider a chain of coupled and strongly pinned anharmonic oscillators subject to a non-equilibrium random forcing. Assuming that the stationary state is approximately Gaussian, we first derive a stationary Boltzmann equation. By localizing the involved resonances, we next invert the linearized collision operator and compute the heat conductivity. In particular, we show that the Gaussian approximation yields a finite conductivity $κ\sim\frac{1}{λ^2T^2}$, for $λ$ the anharmonic coupling strength.
The problem of relating microscopic chaos to macroscopic behavior in a many-degrees-of-freedom system is numerically investigated by analyzing statistical properties associated to the position and momentum of a heavy impurity embedded in a chain of nearest-neighbor anharmonic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam oscillators. For this model we have found that the behavior of the relaxation time of the momentum autocorrelation function of the impurity is different depending on the dynamical regime (either regular or chaotic) of the lattice.
Using stochastic methods, general formulas for average kinetic and potential energies for anharmonic, undamped (frictionless), classical oscillators are derived. It is demonstrated that for potentials of $|x|^ν$ ($ν>0$) type energies are equipartitioned for the harmonic potential only. For potential wells weaker than parabolic potential energy dominates, while for potentials stronger than parabolic kinetic energy prevails. Due to energy conservation, the variances of kinetic and potential energies are equal. In the limiting case of the infinite rectangular potential well ($ν\to\infty$) the who…
Two quantum quartic anharmonic many-body oscillators are introduced. One of them is the celebrated Calogero model (rational $A_n$ model) modified by quartic anharmonic two-body interactions which support the same symmetry as the Calogero model. Another model is the three-body Wolfes model (rational $G_2$ model) with quartic anharmonic interaction added which has the same symmetry as the Wolfes model. Both models are studied in the framework of algebraic perturbation theory and by the variational method.
Kinetics of systems specified by anharmonic, nonconservative and nonlocally coupled model Hamiltonians is reproduced in the Fokker-Planck and imaginary time Schrodinger equation techniques with subsequent symplectic integration. Test solutions focused on dielectric response in ferroelectrics demonstrates potential of this technique even for nonlocal and hardly nonlinear problems of polarization switching, and reassure the H-theorem of global stability [M. Shiino, Phys. Rev. A, Vol 36, pp. 2393-2411 (1987)] in the global coupling and zero driving limit. PACS: 64.60.Cn; 77.80.Dj; 77.80 Fm. Keywo…
We study the energy diffusion in a chain of anharmonic oscillators where the Hamiltonian dynamics is perturbed by a local energy conserving noise. We prove that under diffusive rescaling of space-time, energy fluctuations diffuse and evolve following an infinite dimensional linear stochastic differential equation driven by the linearized heat equation. We also give variational expressions for the thermal diffusivity and some upper and lower bounds.
A simple uniform approximation of the logarithmic derivative of the ground state eigenfunction for both the quantum-mechanical anharmonic oscillator and the double-well potential given by $V= m^2 x^2+g x^4$ at arbitrary $g \geq 0$ for $m^2>0$ and $m^2<0$, respectively, is presented. It is shown that if this approximation is taken as unperturbed problem it leads to an extremely fast convergent perturbation theory.
We consider a particle represented by an anharmonic oscillator, coupled to an environment (a field) modeled by an ensemble of anharmonic oscillators, the whole system being confined in a cavity of diameter $L$. Up to the first perturbative order in the quartic interaction (interaction parameter $λ$), we use the formalism of {\it dressed} states introduced in previous publications, to obtain for a large cavity explicit $λ$-dependent formulas for the particle radiation process. These formulas are obtained in terms of the corresponding exact expressions for the linear case. We conclude for the en…
We review the mechanism for transport in strongly anharmonic chains of oscillators near the atomic limit where all oscillators are decoupled. In this regime, the motion of most oscillators remains close to integrable, i.e. quasi-periodic, on very long time scales, while a few chaotic spots move very slowly and redistribute the energy across the system. The material acquires several characteristic properties of dynamical glasses: intermittency, jamming and a drastic reduction of the mobility as a function of the thermodynamical parameters. We consider both classical and quantum systems, though …
Recently, the large-order behavior of correlation functions of the $O(N)$-anharmonic oscillator has been analyzed by us in [L. T. Giorgini et el., Phys. Rev. D 101, 125001 (2020)]. Two-loop corrections about the instanton configurations were obtained for the partition function, and the two-point and four-point functions, and the derivative of the two-point function at zero momentum transfer. Here, we attempt to verify the obtained analytic results against numerical calculations of higher-order coefficients for the $O(1)$, $O(2)$, and $O(3)$ oscillators, and demonstrate the drastic improvement …
We compute the first-order correction to the correlation functions of the stationary state of a stochastically forced harmonic chain out of equilibrium when a small on-site anharmonic potential is added. This is achieved by deriving a suitable formula for the covariance matrix of the invariant state. We find that the first-order correction of the heat current does not depend on the size of the system. Second, the temperature profile is linear when the harmonic part of the on-site potential is zero. The sign of the gradient of the profile, however, is opposite to the sign of the temperature dif…
We investigate the transport properties of an anharmonic oscillator, modeled by a single-site Bose-Hubbard model, coupled to two different thermal baths using the numerically exact thermofield based chain-mapping matrix product states (TCMPS) approach. We compare the effectiveness of TCMPS to probe the nonequilibrium dynamics of strongly interacting system irrespective of the system-bath coupling against the global master equation approach in Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad form. We discuss the effect of on-site interactions, temperature bias as well as the system-bath couplings on the s…
We consider a model of heat conduction which consists of a finite nonlinear chain coupled to two heat reservoirs at different temperatures. We study the low temperature asymptotic behavior of the invariant measure. We show that, in this limit, the invariant measure is characterized by a variational principle. We relate the heat flow to the variational principle. The main technical ingredient is an extension of Freidlin-Wentzell theory to a class of degenerate diffusions.
