We consider the satisfiability problem for the two-variable fragment of first-order logic over finite unranked trees. We work with signatures consisting of some unary predicates and the binary navigational predicates child, right sibling, and their respective transitive closures. We prove that the satisfiability problem for the logic containing all these predicates is EXPSPACE-complete. Further, we consider the restriction of the class of structures to singular trees, i.e., we assume that at every node precisely one unary predicate holds. We observe that the full logic and even for unordered trees remain EXPSPACE-complete over finite singular trees, but the complexity decreases for some weaker logics. Namely, the logic with one binary predicate, descendant is NEXPTIME-complete, and its guarded version is PSPACE-complete over finite singular trees, even though both these logics are EXPSPACE-complete over arbitrary finite trees.
We investigate the satisfiability and finite satisfiability problem for probabilistic computation-tree logic (PCTL) where operators are not restricted by any step bounds. We establish decidability for several fragments containing quantitative operators and pinpoint the difficulties arising in more complex fragments where the decidability remains open.
We give a sufficient condition under which every finite-satisfiable formula of a given PCTL fragment has a model with at most doubly exponential number of states (consequently, the finite satisfiability problem for the fragment is in 2-EXPSPACE). The condition is semantic and it is based on enforcing a form of ``progress'' in non-bottom SCCs contributing to the satisfaction of a given PCTL formula. We show that the condition is satisfied by PCTL fragments beyond the reach of existing methods.
We show that the finite satisfiability problem for the unary negation fragment with arbitrary number of transitive relations is decidable and 2-ExpTime-complete. Our result actually holds for a more general setting in which one can require that some binary symbols are interpreted as arbitrary transitive relations, some as partial orders and some as equivalences. We also consider finite satisfiability of various extensions of our primary logic, in particular capturing the concepts of nominals and role hierarchies known from description logic. As the unary negation fragment can express unions of…
We study the finitary satisfiability problem for first order logic with two variables and two binary relations, corresponding to the induced successor relations of two finite linear orders. We show that the problem is decidable in NEXPTIME.
We show that satisfiability for CTL* with equality-, order-, and modulo-constraints over Z is decidable. Previously, decidability was only known for certain fragments of CTL*, e.g., the existential and positive fragments and EF.
We study the computational complexity of model checking and satisfiability problems of polyadic modal logics extended with permutations and Boolean operators on accessibility relations. First, we show that the combined complexity of the model checking problem for the resulting logic is PTime-complete. Secondly, we show that the satisfiability problem of polyadic modal logic extended with negation on accessibility relations is ExpTime-complete. Finally, we show that the satisfiability problem of polyadic modal logic with permutations and Boolean operators on accessibility relations is ExpTime-c…
We show that the satisfiability problem for the quantifier-free theory of product structures with the equicardinality relation is in NP. As an application, we extend the combinatory array logic fragment to handle cardinality constraints. The resulting fragment is independent of the base element and index set theories.
The logical connectives typically found in programming languages are similar to their mathematical counterparts, yet different due to their short-circuit behaviour -- when evaluating them, the second argument is only evaluated if the first argument is not sufficient to determine the result. Combined with the possibility of side-effects, this creates a different type of logic called Short Circuit Logic. A greater theoretical understanding of this logic can lead to more efficient programming and faster program execution. In this thesis, formula satisfiability in the context of Short Circuit Logi…
Hyperproperties are properties that refer to multiple computation traces. This includes many information-flow security policies, such as observational determinism, (generalized) noninterference, and noninference, and other system properties like symmetry or Hamming distances between in error-resistant codes. We introduce MGHyper, a tool for automatic satisfiability checking and model generation for hyperproperties expressed in HyperLTL. Unlike previous satisfiability checkers, MGHyper is not limited to the decidable $\exists^* \forall^*$ fragment of HyperLTL, but provides a semi-decisionproced…
We study the satisfiability problem for the two-variable first-order logic over structures with one transitive relation. % We show that the problem is decidable in 2-NExpTime for the fragment consisting of formulas where existential quantifiers are guarded by transitive atoms. As this fragment enjoys neither the finite model nor the tree model property, to show decidability we introduce novel model construction technique based on the infinite Ramsey theorem. We also point out why the technique is not sufficient to obtain decidability for the full two-variable logic with one transitive relation…
We give the first cut-free ExpTime (optimal) tableau decision procedure for checking satisfiability of a knowledge base in the description logic SHI, which extends the description logic ALC with transitive roles, inverse roles and role hierarchies.
This paper shows that the satisfiability problem for probabilistic CTL (PCTL, for short) is undecidable. By a reduction from $1\frac{1}{2}$-player games with PCTL winning objectives, we establish that the PCTL satisfiability problem is $Σ_1^1$-hard. We present an exponential-time algorithm for the satisfiability of a bounded, negation-closed fragment of PCTL, and show that the satisfiability problem for this fragment is EXPTIME-hard.
We introduce a new decidable fragment of first-order logic with equality, which strictly generalizes two already well-known ones -- the Bernays-Schönfinkel-Ramsey (BSR) Fragment and the Monadic Fragment. The defining principle is the syntactic separation of universally quantified variables from existentially quantified ones at the level of atoms. Thus, our classification neither rests on restrictions on quantifier prefixes (as in the BSR case) nor on restrictions on the arity of predicate symbols (as in the monadic case). We demonstrate that the new fragment exhibits the finite model property …
We develop a sound, complete and practically implementable tableaux-based decision method for constructive satisfiability testing and model synthesis in the fragment ATL+ of the full Alternating time temporal logic ATL*. The method extends in an essential way a previously developed tableaux-based decision method for ATL and works in 2EXPTIME, which is the optimal worst case complexity of the satisfiability problem for ATL+ . We also discuss how suitable parametrizations and syntactic restrictions on the class of input ATL+ formulae can reduce the complexity of the satisfiability problem.
We study the fluted fragment, a decidable fragment of first-order logic with an unbounded number of variables, originally identified in 1968 by W.V. Quine. We show that the satisfiability problem for this fragment has non-elementary complexity, thus refuting an earlier published claim by W.C. Purdy that it is in NExpTime. More precisely, we consider $\mathcal{FL}^m$, the intersection of the fluted fragment and the $m$-variable fragment of first-order logic, for all $m \geq 1$. We show that, for $m \geq 2$, this sub-fragment forces $\lfloor m/2\rfloor$-tuply exponentially large models, and that…
The satisfiability problem for branching-time temporal logics like CTL*, CTL and CTL+ has important applications in program specification and verification. Their computational complexities are known: CTL* and CTL+ are complete for doubly exponential time, CTL is complete for single exponential time. Some decision procedures for these logics are known; they use tree automata, tableaux or axiom systems. In this paper we present a uniform game-theoretic framework for the satisfiability problem of these branching-time temporal logics. We define satisfiability games for the full branching-time temp…
We introduce a multi-sorted stratified syllogistic, called 4LQSR, admitting variables of four sorts and a restricted form of quantification over variables of the first three sorts, and prove that it has a solvable satisfiability problem by showing that it enjoys a small model property. Then, we consider the fragments (4LQSR)^h of 4LQSR, consisting of 4LQSR-formulae whose quantifier prefixes have length bounded by h > 1 and satisfying certain syntactic constraints, and prove that each of them has an NP-complete satisfiability problem. Finally we show that the modal logic K45 can be expressed in…
The standard reasoning problem, concept satisfiability, in the basic description logic ALC is PSPACE-complete, and it is EXPTIME-complete in the presence of unrestricted axioms. Several fragments of ALC, notably logics in the FL, EL, and DL-Lite family, have an easier satisfiability problem; sometimes it is even tractable. All these fragments restrict the use of Boolean operators in one way or another. We look at systematic and more general restrictions of the Boolean operators and establish the complexity of the concept satisfiability problem in the presence of axioms. We separate tractable f…
We study the satisfiability problem for the fluted fragment extended with transitive relations. We show that the logic enjoys the finite model property when only one transitive relation is available. On the other hand we show that the satisfiability problem is undecidable already for the two-variable fragment of the logic in the presence of three transitive relations.
We study elementary modal logics, i.e. modal logic considered over first-order definable classes of frames. The classical semantics of modal logic allows infinite structures, but often practical applications require to restrict our attention to finite structures. Many decidability and undecidability results for the elementary modal logics were proved separately for general satisfiability and for finite satisfiability [11, 12, 16, 17]. In this paper, we show that there is a reason why we must deal with both kinds of satisfiability separately -- we prove that there is a universal first-order for…
The satisfiability problem of hybrid logics with the downarrow binder is known to be undecidable. This initiated a research program on decidable and tractable fragments. In this paper, we investigate the effect of restricting the propositional part of the language on decidability and on the complexity of the satisfiability problem over arbitrary, transitive, total frames, and frames based on equivalence relations. We also consider different sets of modal and hybrid operators. We trace the border of decidability and give the precise complexity of most fragments, in particular for all fragments …
In a seminal paper from 1985, Sistla and Clarke showed that satisfiability for Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) is either NP-complete or PSPACE-complete, depending on the set of temporal operators used. If, in contrast, the set of propositional operators is restricted, the complexity may decrease. This paper undertakes a systematic study of satisfiability for LTL formulae over restricted sets of propositional and temporal operators. Since every propositional operator corresponds to a Boolean function, there exist infinitely many propositional operators. In order to systematically cover all possible…
We study fragments of first-order logic and of least fixed point logic that allow only unary negation: negation of formulas with at most one free variable. These logics generalize many interesting known formalisms, including modal logic and the $μ$-calculus, as well as conjunctive queries and monadic Datalog. We show that satisfiability and finite satisfiability are decidable for both fragments, and we pinpoint the complexity of satisfiability, finite satisfiability, and model checking. We also show that the unary negation fragment of first-order logic is model-theoretically very well behaved.…
Recently, the separated fragment (SF) has been introduced and proved to be decidable. Its defining principle is that universally and existentially quantified variables may not occur together in atoms. The known upper bound on the time required to decide SF's satisfiability problem is formulated in terms of quantifier alternations: Given an SF sentence $\exists \vec{z} \forall \vec{x}_1 \exists \vec{y}_1 \ldots \forall \vec{x}_n \exists \vec{y}_n . ψ$ in which $ψ$ is quantifier free, satisfiability can be decided in nondeterministic $n$-fold exponential time. In the present paper, we conduct a …
Recently, the separated fragment (SF) of first-order logic has been introduced. Its defining principle is that universally and existentially quantified variables may not occur together in atoms. SF properly generalizes both the Bernays-Schönfinkel-Ramsey (BSR) fragment and the relational monadic fragment. In this paper the restrictions on variable occurrences in SF sentences are relaxed such that universally and existentially quantified variables may occur together in the same atom under certain conditions. Still, satisfiability can be decided. This result is established in two ways: firstly, …
Temporal logics for the specification of information-flow properties are able to express relations between multiple executions of a system. The two most important such logics are HyperLTL and HyperCTL*, which generalise LTL and CTL* by trace quantification. It is known that this expressiveness comes at a price, i.e. satisfiability is undecidable for both logics. In this paper we settle the exact complexity of these problems, showing that both are in fact highly undecidable: we prove that HyperLTL satisfiability is $Σ_1^1$-complete and HyperCTL* satisfiability is $Σ_1^2$-complete. These are sig…
We show that Branching-time temporal logics CTL and CTL*, as well as Alternating-time temporal logics ATL and ATL*, are as semantically expressive in the language with a single propositional variable as they are in the full language, i.e., with an unlimited supply of propositional variables. It follows that satisfiability for CTL, as well as for ATL, with a single variable is EXPTIME-complete, while satisfiability for CTL*, as well as for ATL*, with a single variable is 2EXPTIME-complete,--i.e., for these logics, the satisfiability for formulas with only one variable is as hard as satisfiabili…
The standard reasoning problem, concept satisfiability, in the basic description logic ALC is PSPACE-complete, and it is EXPTIME-complete in the presence of unrestricted axioms. Several fragments of ALC, notably logics in the FL, EL, and DL-Lite families, have an easier satisfiability problem; sometimes it is even tractable. We classify the complexity of the standard satisfiability problems for all possible Boolean and quantifier fragments of ALC in the presence of general axioms.
The finite satisfiability problem of monadic second order logic is decidable only on classes of structures of bounded tree-width by the classic result of Seese (1991). We prove the following problem is decidable: Input: (i) A monadic second order logic sentence $α$, and (ii) a sentence $β$ in the two-variable fragment of first order logic extended with counting quantifiers. The vocabularies of $α$ and $β$ may intersect. Output: Is there a finite structure which satisfies $α\landβ$ such that the restriction of the structure to the vocabulary of $α$ has bounded tree-width? (The tree-width of the…
We study the multiagent epistemic logic CMAELCD with operators for common and distributed knowledge for all coalitions of agents. We introduce Hintikka structures for this logic and prove that satisfiability in such structures is equivalent to satisfiability in standard models. Using this result, we design an incremental tableau based decision procedure for testing satisfiability in CMAELCD.
We consider an extension of the unary negation fragment of first-order logic in which arbitrarily many binary symbols may be required to be interpreted as equivalence relations. We show that this extension has the finite model property. More specifically, we show that every satisfiable formula has a model of at most doubly exponential size. We argue that the satisfiability (= finite satisfiability) problem for this logic is TwoExpTime-complete. We also transfer our results to a restricted variant of the guarded negation fragment with equivalence relations.
We call a first-order formula one-dimensional if its every maximal block of existential (universal) quantifiers leaves at most one variable free. We consider the one-dimensional restrictions of the guarded fragment, GF, and the tri-guarded fragment, TGF, the latter being a recent extension of GF in which quantification for subformulas with at most two free variables need not be guarded, and which thus may be seen as a unification of GF and the two-variable fragment, FO2. We denote the resulting formalisms, resp., GF1, and TGF1. We show that GF1 has an exponential model property and NExpTime-co…

We consider here Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) formulas interpreted over \emph{finite} traces. We denote this logic by LTLf. The existing approach for LTLf satisfiability checking is based on a reduction to standard LTL satisfiability checking. We describe here a novel direct approach to LTLf satisfiability checking, where we take advantage of the difference in the semantics between LTL and LTLf. While LTL satisfiability checking requires finding a \emph{fair cycle} in an appropriate transition system, here we need to search only for a finite trace. This enables us to introduce specialized heuri…
Although Dynamic Epistemic Logic (DEL) is an influential logical framework for representing and reasoning about information change, little is known about the computational complexity of its associated decision problems. In fact, we only know that for public announcement logic, a fragment of DEL, the satisfiability problem and the model-checking problem are respectively PSPACE-complete and in P. We contribute to fill this gap by proving that for the DEL language with event models, the model-checking problem is, surprisingly, PSPACE-complete. Also, we prove that the satisfiability problem is NEX…
First-order linear real arithmetic enriched with uninterpreted predicate symbols yields an interesting modeling language. However, satisfiability of such formulas is undecidable, even if we restrict the uninterpreted predicate symbols to arity one. In order to find decidable fragments of this language, it is necessary to restrict the expressiveness of the arithmetic part. One possible path is to confine arithmetic expressions to difference constraints of the form $x - y \mathrel{\#} c$, where $\#$ ranges over the standard relations $<, \leq, =, \neq, \geq, >$ and $x,y$ are universally quantifi…
Arbitrary Arrow Update Logic is a dynamic modal logic that uses an arbitrary arrow update modality to quantify over all arrow updates. Some properties of this logic have already been established, but until now it remained an open question whether the logic's satisfiability problem is decidable. Here, we show that the satisfiability problem of Arbitrary Arrow Update Logic is co-RE hard, and therefore undecidable, by a reduction of the tiling problem.
