One of the most important issues of high-power hadron linacs is the choice of technology with respect to superconducting or room-temperature operation. The favour for a specific technology depends on several parameters such as the beam energy, beam current, beam power and duty factor. This contribution gives an overview of the comparison between superconducting and normal conducting cavities. This includes basic radiofrequency (RF) parameters, design criteria, limitations, required RF and plug power as well as case studies.
The Low Energy RHIC electron Cooler (LEReC) is currently under commissioning at BNL to improve RHIC luminosity for heavy ion beam energies below 10 GeV/nucleon. The linac of LEReC consists of a DC photoemission gun, one 704 MHz superconducting radio frequency (SRF) booster cavity, and three normal conducting cavities. It is designed to deliver a 1.6 MeV to 2.6 MeV electron beam, with peak-to-peak momentum spread dp/p of less than 7e4. Two of the three normal conducting cavities will be used in LEReC for energy spread correction. A single-cell 704 MHz cavity for energy de-chirping and a three-c…
The continue wave (CW) high current proton linac has wide applications as the front end of the high power proton machines. The low energy part is the most difficult one and there is no widely accepted solution yet. Based on the analysis of the focusing properties of the CW low energy proton linac, a 10 MeV low energy normal conducting proton linac based on equidistant seven-gap Cross-bar H-type (CH) cavities is proposed. The linac is composed of ten 7-gap CH cavities and the transverse focusing is maintained by the quadrupole doublets located between cavities. The total length of the linac is …
Ionization cooling is the preferred method for producing bright muon beams. This cooling technique requires the operation of normal conducting, radio-frequency (RF) accelerating cavities within the multi-tesla fields of DC solenoid magnets. Under these conditions, cavities exhibit increased susceptibility to RF breakdown, which can damage channel components and imposes limits on channel length and transmission efficiency. We present a solution to the problem of breakdown in strong magnetic fields. We report, for the first time, stable high-vacuum, copper cavity operation at gradients above 50 …
Experimental data on N-doped superconducting (sc) cavities are further analyzed which contribute to confirm a recently proposed model explaining the increase of the Q-value versus the accelerating gradient.
Cool-down dynamics of superconducting accelerating cavities became particularly important for obtaining very high quality factors in SRF cavities. Previous studies proved that when cavity is cooled fast, the quality factor is higher than when cavity is cooled slowly. This has been discovered to derive from the fact that a fast cool-down allows better magnetic field expulsion during the superconducting transition. In this paper we describe the first experiment where the temperature all around the cavity was mapped during the cavity cool-down through transition temperature, proving the existence…
In the field of particle accelerators the most common use of RF cavities is to increase the particle velocity of traversing particles. This feature makes them one of the core ingredients of every accelerator, and in the case of linear accelerators they are even the dominant machine component. Since there are many different types of accelerator, RF cavities have been optimized for different purposes and with different abilities, e.g., cavities with fixed or variable RF frequency, cavities for short or long pulses/CW operation, superconducting and normal-conducting cavities. This lecture starts …
The SNS linac accelerates an average beam current of 2 mA to an energy of 968 MeV. The linac is pulsed at 60 Hz with an H- beam pulse of 1 ms. The first 185 Mev of the linac uses normal conducting cavities, and the remaining length of the linac uses superconducting cavities. The linac operates at 402.5 MHz up to 87 MeV and then changes to 805 MHz for the remainder. This paper gives an overview of the Linac RF system. The overview includes a description and configuration of the high power RF components, the HV converter/modulator, and the RF controls. Issues and tradeoffs in the RF system will …
Radio frequency (RF) cavities are commonly used to accelerate charged particle beams. The shape of the RF cavity determines the resonant electromagnetic fields and frequencies, which need to satisfy a variety of requirements for a stable and efficient acceleration of the beam. For example, the accelerating frequency has to match a given target frequency, the shunt impedance usually has to be maximized, and the interaction of higher order modes with the beam minimized. In this paper we formulate such problems as constrained multi-objective shape optimization problems, use a massively parallel i…
In order to update the beam power from 100 kW to 250 kW in China spallation neutron source (CSNS) Phase II, one of the important measures is to replace the 80 meters long beam transport line between the present 80 MeV linac injector and the RCS to another kind of acceleration structure. In this paper, we proposed a scheme based on 324 MHz double-spoke superconducting cavities. Unlike the superconducting elliptical cavity and normal conducting CCL structure, the double-spoke cavity belongs to TE mode structure and has smaller transvers dimension compared with that of TH mode one. It can work at…
We derived S-parameter based expressions for the intrinsic quality factor of an arbitrary coupled multiport microwave cavity and non-ideal test fixture. Practical accuracy limitations of the obtained expressions specifically for superconducting accelerator cavities were evaluated both analytically and with the simulation software. The resulting formulas can be used to extract intrinsic quality factor of normal conducting and superconducting cavities directly from calibrated S-parameter measurements.
We report on an effort to improve the performance of superconducting radiofrequency cavities by the use of heat treatment in a temperature range sufficient to dissociate the natural surface oxide. We find that the residual resistance is significantly decreased, and we find an unexpected reduction in the BCS resistance. Together these result in extremely high quality factor values at relatively large accelerating fields Eacc ~20 MV/m: Q0 of 3-4x10^11 at <1.5 K and Q0 ~5x10^10 at 2.0 K. In one cavity, measurements of surface resistance versus temperature showed an extremely small residual resist…
Q-slope issue, which is caused by the field dependent surface resistance, puzzled people for a long time in SRF fields. In this paper, we related the Q-slope with surface treatments; and proposed a surface-impurity model to explain the field-dependent of surface resistance of SRF cavities. Eighteen cavity-test results have been analyzed to examine the model. These cavities were treated by different recipes: Nitrogen-doping; BCP and HF-rinsing; EP with 120°C baking; and EP without 120°C baking. The performance of these cavities, which is normally represented by cavity quality factor versus acce…

Reducing the operating temperature of normal conducting particle accelerators substantially increases their efficiency. Low-temperature operation increases the yield strength of the accelerator material and reduces surface resistance, hence a great reduction in cyclic fatigue could be achieved resulting in a large reduction in breakdown rates compared to room-temperature operation. Furthermore, temperature reduction increases the intrinsic quality factor of the accelerating cavities, and consequently, the shunt impedance leading to increased system efficiency and beam loading capabilities. In …
The S-DALINAC is a 130 MeV superconducting recirculating electron accelerator serving several nuclear and radiation physics experiments as well as driving an infrared free-electron laser. A system of normal conducting rf resonators for noninvasive beam position and current measurement was established. For the measurement of gamma-radiation inside the accelerator cave a system of Compton diodes has been developed and tested. Detailed investigations of the transverse phasespace were carried out with a tomographical reconstruction method of optical transition radiation spots. The method can be ap…
In a long-term planning for neutrino experiments in China, a medium baseline neutrino beam is proposed which uses a CW superconducting linac of 15 MW in beam power as the proton driver. The linac will be based on the technologies which are under development by the China-ADS project, but with much weaker requirement on reliability. It is composed of a 3.2-MeV normal conducting RFQ and 5 different types of superconducting cavities. The nominal design energy and current are 1.5 GeV and 10 mA, respectively. The general considerations and preliminary results on the physics design will be presented …
