We consider reversible work extraction from identical quantum batteries. From an ensemble of individually passive states, work can be produced only via global unitary (and thus entangling) operations. However, we show here that there always exists a method to extract all possible work without creating any entanglement, at the price of generically requiring more operations (i.e. additional time). We then study faster methods to extract work and provide a quantitative relation between the amount of generated multipartite entanglement and extractable work. Our results suggest a general relation between entanglement generation and the power of work extraction.
We consider the problem of extracting tripartite entanglement through single local instantaneous interactions of a separable target system A-B-C with a scalar field. We find, non-perturbatively, that tripartite entanglement is easily extracted in this scenario, in strong contrast to bipartite extraction, which is not possible due to a no-go theorem. The tripartite entanglement is of the GHZ-type, and an optimal value of the coupling exists that admits maximal extraction.
What is the energy cost of extracting entanglement from complex quantum systems? In other words, given a state of a quantum system, how much energy does it cost to extract m EPR pairs? This is an important question, particularly for quantum field theories where the vacuum is generally highly entangled. Here we build a theory to understand the energy cost of entanglement extraction. First, we apply it to a toy model, and then we define the entanglement temperature, which relates the energy cost to the amount of extracted entanglement. Next, we give a physical argument to find the energy cost of…
A measurement can extract work from an entangled, e.g., two-mode system. Here, we inquire the extracted work when no intellectual creature, like an ancilla/daemon, is present. When the monitoring is carried out by the environmental modes, that is when no measurement-apparatus is present, the measurement-basis becomes the coherent state. This implies a Gaussian measurement with a fixed strength $λ=1$. For two-mode Gaussian states, extracted work is already independent from the measurement outcome. After the strength is also fixed, this makes nature assign a particular amount of work to a given …
We study under what circumstances a separable bipartite system A-B can or cannot become entangled through local interactions with a bi-local entangled source $\text{S}_1$-$\text{S}_2$. We obtain constraints on the general forms of the interaction Hamiltonians coupling A with $\text{S}_1$ and B with $\text{S}_2$ necessary for A and B to become entangled. We are able to generalize and provide non-perturbative insight on several previous no-go theorems of entanglement harvesting from quantum fields using these general results. We also discuss the role of communication in the process of entangleme…
We compute the minimal energy cost for extracting entanglement from the ground state of a bosonic or fermionic quadratic system. Specifically, we find the minimal energy increase $ΔE_{\mathrm{min}}$ in the system resulting from replacing an entangled pair of modes, sharing entanglement entropy $ΔS$, by a product state, and we show how to construct modes achieving this minimal energy cost. Thus, we obtain a protocol independent lower bound on the extraction of pure state entanglement from quadratic systems. Due to their generality, our results apply to a large range of physical systems, as we d…
We consider a central-spin battery where $N_b$ central spins serve as battery cells and $N_c$ bath spins serve as charging units. It is shown that the energy stored in the battery that can be extractable is quantified by the ergotropy, and that battery-charger entanglement is quantified via the Von Neumann entropy. By using an exact approach to a one-cell and two-cell battery, our analytical results suggest that, during the charging process, the extractable work slowly increases before the battery-charger entanglement reaches its maximum and then it will rapidly increase when the entanglement …
We study the norms of the Bloch vectors for arbitrary $n$-partite quantum states. A tight upper bound of the norms is derived for $n$-partite systems with different individual dimensions. These upper bounds are used to deal with the separability problems. Necessary conditions are presented for $\mathbf m$-separable states in $n$-partite quantum systems. Based on the upper bounds, classification of multipartite entanglement is illustrated with detailed examples.
Understanding the role of classical and quantum correlations in work extraction is a problem of fundamental importance in thermodynamics. We approach this problem by considering that, in closed quantum systems, the maximum cyclic work extractable is equal to the ergotropy. Thus, we aim to identify and investigate the contributions to the ergotropy coming from different kinds of initial correlations (total, classical, discord and entanglement correlations). By doing so, we have introduced and studied quantifiers of correlations which are based on ergotropy. In particular, our results suggest th…
Quantum catalytic transformations play important roles in the transformation of quantum entangled states under local operations and classical communications (LOCC). The key problems in catalytic transformations are the existence and the bounds on the catalytic states. We present the necessary conditions of catalytic states based on a set of points given by the Schmidt coefficients of the entangled source and target states. The lower bounds on the dimensions of the catalytic states are also investigated. Moreover, we give a detailed protocol of quantum mixed state transformation under entanglem…
Great advances have been achieved in studying characteristics of entanglement for fundamentals of quantum mechanics and quantum information processing. However, even for N-qubit systems, the problem of entanglement criterion has not been well solved. In this Letter, using the method of state decomposition and high order singular value decomposition (HOSVD), we propose a necessary and sufficient entanglement criterion for general N-qubit systems. As an example, we apply our method to study the multi-qubit W state with white noise. We not only obtain the separability critical point, which is tig…
Detecting spacelike vacuum entanglement at all distances and promoting negativity to a necessary and sufficient entanglement measure in many-body regimes
One of the most striking features of quantum theory is the existence of entangled states, responsible for Einstein's so called "spooky action at a distance". These states emerge from the mathematical formalism of quantum theory, but to date we do not have a clear idea of the physical principles that give rise to entanglement. Why does nature have entangled states? Would any theory superseding classical theory have entangled states, or is quantum theory special? One important feature of quantum theory is that it has a classical limit, recovering classical theory through the process of decoheren…
Entanglement has been shown to be necessary for pure state quantum computation to have an advantage over classical computation. However, it remains open whether entanglement is necessary for quantum computers that use mixed states to also have an advantage. The one clean qubit model is a form of quantum computer in which the input is the maximally mixed state plus one pure qubit. Previous work has shown that there is a limited amount of entanglement present in these computations, despite the fact that they can efficiently solve some problems that are seemingly hard to solve classically. This c…
In this paper, we continue our investigation on controlling the state of a quantum harmonic oscillator, by coupling it to a reservoir composed of a sequence of qubits. Specifically, we show that sending qubits separable from each other but initialised at different states in pairs can stabilise the oscillator at squeezed states. However, only if entanglement is allowed in the reservoir qubit can we stabilise the oscillator at a wider set of squeezed states. This thus provides a proof for the necessity of involving entanglement in the reservoir qubits input to the oscillator, as regard to the st…
A Multipartite entangled state has many different kinds of entanglement specified by the number of partitions. The most essential example of multipartite entanglement is the entanglement of multi-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state in white noise. We explicitly construct the entanglement witnesses for these states with stabilizer generators of the GHZ states. For a $N$ qubit GHZ state in white noise, we demonstrate the necessary and sufficient criterion of separability when it is divided into $k$ parties with $N\leq 2k-1$ for arbitrary $N$ and $k$. The criterion covers more than a ha…
We consider the problem of establishing entangled states of optimal singlet fraction and negativity between two remote parties for every use of a noisy quantum channel and trace-preserving LOCC under the assumption that the parties do not share prior correlations. We show that for a family of quantum channels in every finite dimension $d\geq3$, one-shot optimal singlet fraction and entanglement negativity are attained only with appropriate nonmaximally entangled states. We further show that the generalization of the formula that exactly computes one-shot optimal singlet fraction for qubit chan…
