Hand gestures recognition (HGR) is one of the main areas of research for the engineers, scientists and bioinformatics. HGR is the natural way of Human Machine interaction and today many researchers in the academia and industry are working on different application to make interactions more easy, natural and convenient without wearing any extra device. HGR can be applied from games control to vision enabled robot control, from virtual reality to smart home systems. In this paper we are discussing work done in the area of hand gesture recognition where focus is on the intelligent approaches including soft computing based methods like artificial neural network, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms etc. The methods in the preprocessing of image for segmentation and hand image construction also taken into study. Most researchers used fingertips for hand detection in appearance based modeling. Finally the comparison of results given by different researchers is also presented.
Handwriting recognition is improving in leaps and bounds, and this opens up new opportunities for stylus-based interactions. In particular, note-taking applications can become a more intelligent user interface, incorporating new features like autocomplete and integrated search. In this work we ran a gesture elicitation study, asking 21 participants to imagine how they would interact with an imaginary, intelligent note-taking application. We report agreement on the elicited gestures, finding that while existing common interactions are prevalent (like double taps and long presses) a number of mo…
Emotion is an essential part of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and human mental health. Current emotion recognition research mainly focuses on single modality (e.g., facial expression), while human emotion expressions are multi-modal in nature. In this paper, we propose a hybrid emotion recognition system leveraging two emotion-rich and tightly-coupled modalities, i.e., facial expression and body gesture. However, unbiased and fine-grained facial expression and gesture recognition remain a major problem. To this end, unlike our rivals relying on contact or even invasive sensors, we explore the c…
Nowadays, autonomous mobile robots support people in many areas where human presence either redundant or too dangerous. They have successfully proven themselves in expeditions, gas industry, mines, warehouses, etc. However, even legged robots may stuck in rough terrain conditions requiring human cognitive abilities to navigate the system. While gamepads and keyboards are convenient for wheeled robot control, the quadruped robot in 3D space can move along all linear coordinates and Euler angles, requiring at least 12 buttons for independent control of their DoF. Therefore, more convenient inter…
Human Computer Interaction (HCI) has been redefined in this era. People want to interact with their devices in such a way that has physical significance in the real world, in other words, they want ergonomic input devices. In this paper, we propose a new method of interaction with computing devices having a consumer grade camera, that uses two colored markers (red and green) worn on tips of the fingers to generate desired hand gestures, and for marker detection and tracking we used template matching with kalman filter. We have implemented all the usual system commands, i.e., cursor movement, r…
The established way of interfacing with most computer systems is a mouse and keyboard. Hand gestures are an intuitive and effective touchless way to interact with computer systems. However, hand gesture based systems have seen low adoption among end-users primarily due to numerous technical hurdles in detecting in-air gestures accurately. This paper presents Gestop, a framework developed to bridge this gap. The framework learns to detect gestures from demonstrations, is customizable by end-users and enables users to interact in real-time with computers having only RGB cameras, using gestures.
A head-mounted display (HMD) is a portable and interactive display device. With the development of 5G technology, it may become a general-purpose computing platform in the future. Human-computer interaction (HCI) technology for HMDs has also been of significant interest in recent years. In addition to tracking gestures and speech, tracking human eyes as a means of interaction is highly effective. In this paper, we propose two UnityEyes-based convolutional neural network models, UEGazeNet and UEGazeNet*, which can be used for input images with low resolution and high resolution, respectively. T…
In recent years because of the advances in computer vision research, free hand gestures have been explored as means of human-computer interaction (HCI). Together with improved speech processing technology it is an important step toward natural multimodal HCI. However, inclusion of non-predefined continuous gestures into a multimodal framework is a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a structured approach for studying patterns of multimodal language in the context of a 2D-display control. We consider systematic analysis of gestures from observable kinematical primitives to their sema…

Using physical interactive devices like mouse and keyboards hinders naturalistic human-machine interaction and increases the probability of surface contact during a pandemic. Existing gesture-recognition systems do not possess user authentication, making them unreliable. Static gestures in current gesture-recognition technology introduce long adaptation periods and reduce user compatibility. Our technology places a strong emphasis on user recognition and safety. We use meaningful and relevant gestures for task operation, resulting in a better user experience. This paper aims to design a robust…

Natural user interfaces are on the rise. Manufacturers for Augmented, Virtual, and Mixed Reality head mounted displays are increasingly integrating new sensors into their consumer grade products, allowing gesture recognition without additional hardware. This offers new possibilities for bare handed interaction within virtual environments. This work proposes a hand gesture authoring tool for object specific grab gestures allowing virtual objects to be grabbed as in the real world. The presented solution uses template matching for gesture recognition and requires no technical knowledge to design…
As augmented reality technology and hardware become more mature and affordable, researchers have been exploring more intuitive and discoverable interaction techniques for immersive environments. In this paper, we investigate multimodal interaction for 3D object manipulation in a multi-object virtual environment. To identify the user-defined gestures, we conducted an elicitation study involving 24 participants for 22 referents with an augmented reality headset. It yielded 528 proposals and generated a winning gesture set with 25 gestures after binning and ranking all gesture proposals. We found…
This research establishes a better understanding of the syntax choices in speech interactions and of how speech, gesture, and multimodal gesture and speech interactions are produced by users in unconstrained object manipulation environments using augmented reality. The work presents a multimodal elicitation study conducted with 24 participants. The canonical referents for translation, rotation, and scale were used along with some abstract referents (create, destroy, and select). In this study time windows for gesture and speech multimodal interactions are developed using the start and stop tim…
We present results of two pilot studies that investigated human error behaviours with an error prone in-air gesture recognizer. During the studies, users performed a small set of simple in-air gestures. In the first study, these gestures were abstract. The second study associated concrete tasks with each gesture. Interestingly, the error patterns observed in the two studies were substantially different.
Hand gesture recognition attracts great attention for interaction since it is intuitive and natural to perform. In this paper, we explore a novel method for interaction by using bone-conducted sound generated by finger movements while performing gestures. We design a set of gestures that generate unique sound features, and capture the resulting sound from the wrist using a commodity microphone. Next, we design a sound event detector and a recognition model to classify the gestures. Our system achieves an overall accuracy of 90.13% in quiet environments and 85.79% under noisy conditions. This p…

The possibility for humans to interact with physical or virtual systems using gestures has been vastly explored by researchers and designers in the last twenty years to provide new and intuitive interaction modalities. Unfortunately, the literature about gestural interaction is not homogeneous, and it is characterised by a lack of shared terminology. This leads to fragmented results and makes it difficult for research activities to build on top of state-of-the-art results and approaches. The analysis in this paper aims at creating a common conceptual design framework to enforce development eff…

Gesture interaction is a natural way of communicating with a robot as an alternative to speech. Gesture recognition methods leverage optical flow in order to understand human motion. However, while accurate optical flow estimation (i.e., traditional) methods are costly in terms of runtime, fast estimation (i.e., deep learning) methods' accuracy can be improved. In this paper, we present a pipeline for gesture-based human-robot interaction that uses a novel optical flow estimation method in order to achieve an improved speed-accuracy trade-off. Our optical flow estimation method introduces four…
This text presents a cognitive-psychology analysis of spontaneous, co-speech gestures in a face-to-face architectural design meeting (A1 in DTRS7). The long-term objective is to formulate specifications for remote collaborative-design systems, especially for supporting the use of different semiotic modalities (multi-modal interaction). According to their function for design, interaction, and collaboration, we distinguish different gesture families: representational (entity designating or specifying), organisational (management of discourse, interaction, or functional design actions), focalisin…
In this paper, we introduce GesPlayer, a gesture-based empowered video player that explores how users can experience their hands as an interface through gestures. We provide three semantic gestures based on the camera of a computer or other smart device to detect and adjust the progress of video playback, volume, and screen brightness, respectively. Our goal is to enable users to control video playback simply by their gestures in the air, without the need to use a mouse or keyboard, especially when it is not convenient to do so. Ultimately, we hope to expand our understanding of gesture-based …
Embodied Conversational Agents that make use of co-speech gestures can enhance human-machine interactions in many ways. In recent years, data-driven gesture generation approaches for ECAs have attracted considerable research attention, and related methods have continuously improved. Real-time interaction is typically used when researchers evaluate ECA systems that generate rule-based gestures. However, when evaluating the performance of ECAs based on data-driven methods, participants are often required only to watch pre-recorded videos, which cannot provide adequate information about what a pe…
In this paper, we introduce a tilting interface that controls direction based applications in ubiquitous environments. A tilt interface is useful for situations that require remote and quick interactions or that are executed in public spaces. We explored the proposed tilting interface with different application types and classified the tilting interaction techniques. Augmenting objects with sensors can potentially address the problem of the lack of intuitive and natural input devices in ubiquitous environments. We have conducted an experiment to test the usability of the proposed tilting inter…
With the rapid development of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology, human-computer interaction (HCI) has been greatly improved for gaming interaction of AR and VR control. The finger micro-gesture is one of the important interactive methods for HCI applications such as in the Google Soli and Microsoft Kinect projects. However, the progress in this research is slow due to the lack of high quality public available database. In this paper, holoscopic 3D camera is used to capture high quality micro-gesture images and a new unique holoscopic 3D micro-gesture (HoMG) database is…
Human-computer interaction (HCI) is crucial for the safety of lives as autonomous vehicles (AVs) become commonplace. Yet, little effort has been put toward ensuring that AVs understand humans on the road. In this paper, we present GLADAS, a simulator-based research platform designed to teach AVs to understand pedestrian hand gestures. GLADAS supports the training, testing, and validation of deep learning-based self-driving car gesture recognition systems. We focus on gestures as they are a primordial (i.e, natural and common) way to interact with cars. To the best of our knowledge, GLADAS is t…
A player plays a game by sending messages into the game world using an interaction technique. These messages are then translated into actions performed on or by game objects towards achieving the game's objectives. A game's interaction model is the bridge between the player's interaction and its in-game actions by defining what the player may and may not act upon at any given moment. This makes the choice of interaction technique, its associated actions, and interaction model critical for designing games that are engaging, immersive, and intuitive to play. This paper presents a study focused o…
In this project, by utilizing the real-time human gestures captured by Kinect, we attempted to provide a self-made interactive light system PIXEL for interacting with the visitor to play a simple SNAKE game. By paralleling the low power single color LED lights and lighting up them separately or together, we provided a big LED board with multiple colors while at the time safe enough without using high tension electricity. We analysed the factors that influence the final visual effect of the light pixel, the novel gestures that can be recognized well by current computer vision algorithms and did…

Human computer interaction facilitates intelligent communication between humans and computers, in which gesture recognition plays a prominent role. This paper proposes a machine learning system to identify dynamic gestures using tri-axial acceleration data acquired from two public datasets. These datasets, uWave and Sony, were acquired using accelerometers embedded in Wii remotes and smartwatches, respectively. A dynamic gesture signed by the user is characterized by a generic set of features extracted across time and frequency domains. The system was analyzed from an end-user perspective and …
Gestures performed accompanying the voice are essential for voice interaction to convey complementary semantics for interaction purposes such as wake-up state and input modality. In this paper, we investigated voice-accompanying hand-to-face (VAHF) gestures for voice interaction. We targeted hand-to-face gestures because such gestures relate closely to speech and yield significant acoustic features (e.g., impeding voice propagation). We conducted a user study to explore the design space of VAHF gestures, where we first gathered candidate gestures and then applied a structural analysis to them …
The uncertainty and variability of underwater environment propose the request to control underwater robots in real time and dynamically, especially in the scenarios where human and robots need to work collaboratively in the field. However, the underwater environment imposes harsh restrictions on the application of typical control and communication methods. Considering that gestures are a natural and efficient interactive way for human, we, utilizing convolution neural network, implement a real-time gesture-based recognition system, who can recognize 50 kinds of gestures from images captured by…

The study of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) aims to create close and friendly communication between humans and robots. In the human-center HRI, an essential aspect of implementing a successful and effective HRI is building a natural and intuitive interaction, including verbal and nonverbal. As a prevalent nonverbally communication approach, hand and arm gesture communication happen ubiquitously in our daily life. A considerable amount of work on gesture-based HRI is scattered in various research domains. However, a systematic understanding of the works on gesture-based HRI is still lacking. Thi…
The movement of a user's face, easily detected by a smartphone's front camera, is an underexploited input modality for mobile interactions. We introduce three sets of face-engaged interaction techniques for augmenting the traditional mobile inputs, which leverages the combination of the head movements with touch gestures and device motions, all sensed via the phone's built-in sensors. We systematically present the space of design considerations for mobile interactions using one or more of the three input modalities (i.e., touch, motion, and head). The additional affordances of the proposed tec…

The use of hand gestures provides a natural alternative to cumbersome interface devices for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) systems. As the technology advances and communication between humans and machines becomes more complex, HCI systems should also be scaled accordingly in order to accommodate the introduced complexities. In this paper, we propose a methodology to scale hand gestures by forming them with predefined gesture-phonemes, and a convolutional neural network (CNN) based framework to recognize hand gestures by learning only their constituents of gesture-phonemes.
