The laws of quantum physics can be studied under the mathematical operation T that inverts the direction of time. Strong and electromagnetic forces are known to be invariant under temporal inversion, however the weak force is not. The BaBar experiment recently exploited the quantum-correlated production of pairs of B0 mesons to show that T is a broken symmetry. Here we show that it is possible to perform a wide range of tests of quark flavour changing processes under T in order to validate the Standard Model of particle physics covering b to u, d, s, and c transitions as well as c to u, d and s transitions using entangled B and D pairs created in Y(4S) and psi(3770) decays. We also note that pseudoscalar decays to two spin one particle final states provide an additional set of CP filter bases to use for T violation tests.
The measurements of the CP violation parameters by the CPLEAR experiment are reviewed. It is shown that attempts to prove T-violation from the semileptonic asymmetries are flawed by logical inconsistencies.
The angular momentum mixing in a non-spherical CSC with nonzero azimuthal quantum number and therefore violating time reversal invariance has been examined. The mixing is bound to occur because of the equal strength of the pairing potential mediated by one-gluon exchange for all partial waves to the leading order QCD running coupling constant and the nonlinearity of the gap equation. The free energy with mixing is lower than that with p-wave pairing only, but still higher than that of the spherical CSL state.
Experiments with $Ω^{\pm}$ baryons moving in a crystal at LHC in addition to EDM measurement open possibility to study electric quadrupole moment, to observe birefringence effect (spin oscillations and spin dichroism) for $Ω^{\pm}$ baryons and to get information about constants describing P-odd, T-odd effects at $Ω^{\pm}$ baryon interactions with electrons and nuclei
A general theory of pseudomagnetic effects for the propagation of polarized neutrons through polarized target in multi resonance approach is presented. Some applications related to the proposed search for time reversal invariance violation in neutron scattering are considered.
The spin structure of parity violating and time reversal invariance violating effects in neutron scattering is discussed. The explicit relations between these effects are presented in terms of functions nuclear spins and neutron partial widths of p-wave resonances.
The minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model allows for some of the coupling strengths to be complex parameters. The presence of such imaginary phases can lead to violations of time reversal invariance, which can be tested if correlations in products of an odd number of polarizations and momenta are measured and found to be different from zero. As an example, we consider the triple product $\mbox{\bf J} \cdot \left(\mbox{\bf p}_1 \times \mbox{\bf p}_ {2} \right)$ in the $β$-decay of the neutron, of the $Σ^-$, and in the decay $K^{+}_{3μ}$. For these low-energy decays, we find tha…
Time reversal invariance violating parity conserving (TVPC) effects are calculated for elastic proton deuteron scattering with proton energies up to $2~$MeV. Distorted Wave Born Approximation is employed to estimate TVPC matrix elements, based on hadronic wave functions, obtained by solving three-body Faddeev-Merkuriev equations in configuration space with realistic potentials.
Time reversal invariance violating (TRIV) effects in neutron scattering are very important in a search for new physics, being complementary to neutron and atomic electric dipole moment measurements. In this relation, a sensitivity of TRIV observables to different models of CP-violation and their dependencies on nuclear structure, which can lead to new enhancement factors, are discussed.
In a bent crystal the $P$-odd effect of short-lived baryon spin rotation could imitate spin rotation caused by assumed EDM. Use of different behavior of $P$-odd and $T$-odd spin rotations at crystal turning around the direction of particle momentum makes it possible to exclude $P$-odd rotation contribution, when measuring short-lived baryons EDM. Subtraction of the measurement results for angle ranges $φ$ and $φ+ π$ from each other enables measuring $T$-odd rotation at scattering of negatively charged beauty and neutral baryons by axes of unbent crystal.
We present a novel method to perform a direct T (time reversal) symmetry test in the neutral kaon system, independent of any CP and/or CPT symmetry tests. This is based on the comparison of suitable transition probabilities, where the required interchange of in <-> out states for a given process is obtained exploiting the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations of neutral kaon pairs produced at a $ϕ$-factory. In the time distribution between the two decays, we compare a reference transition like the one defined by the time ordered decays $(\ell^-,ππ)$ with the T -conjugated one defined by $(3π^0,…
In this letter we reinterpret and reanalyze the available data of the B meson factories showing the existence of direct experimental evidence of time reversal invariance violation in B mesons. This reinterpretation consists of using the available observables to define a new observable which, in a model independent way and without assuming CPT invariance, compares a transition between a $B^0$ and a here-defined $B_α$-state, with its time reversed transition. The observable then offers a direct way to probe time reversal invariance and it is therefore independent of any conclusion obtained from …
Time Reversal Invariant Violating (TRIV) effects in neutron transmission through a nuclei target are discussed. We demonstrate the existence of a class of experiments that are free from falls asymmetries. We discuss enhancement of TRIV effects. We analyze a model experiment and show that such tests have a discovery potential of $10^2 - 10^4$ compare to current limits.
Apart from the $pd$ reaction also the scattering of antiprotons with transversal polarization $p_y^p$ on deuterons with tensor polarization $P_{xz}$ provides a null-test signal for time-reversal-invariance violating but parity conserving effects. Assuming that the time-reversal-invariance violating $\bar NN$ interaction contains the same operator structure as the $NN$ interaction, we discuss the energy dependence of the null-test signal in $\bar pd$ scattering on the basis of a calculation within the spin-dependent Glauber theory at beam energies of 50-300 MeV.
Spin precession of channelled particles in bent crystals at the LHC gives unique possibility for measurements as electric and magnetic moments of charm, beauty and strange charged baryons so and constants determining CP ($T_{odd}, P_{odd}$) violation interactions and $P_{odd}, T_{even}$ interactions of baryons with electrons and nucleus (nucleons). For a particle moving in a bent crystal a new effect caused by nonelastic processes arises: in addition to the spin precession around the direction of the effective magnetic field (bend axis), the direction of electric field and the direction of the…
Time reversal invariance violating parity conserving effects for low energy elastic neutron deuteron scattering are calculated for meson exchange and EFT-type of potentials in a Distorted Wave Born Approximation, using realistic hadronic wave functions, obtained by solving three-body Faddeev equations in configuration space.
Many electrical and mechanical systems with two normal modes are appropriate for illustrating the quantum mechanics of neutral kaons. The illustration of CP- or time-reversal-violation in the neutral kaon system by mechanical or electrical analogues is more subtle. Some possibilities which could be realized in a table-top demonstration are suggested.
Internal target experiments with high quality proton beams allow for a new class of experiments providing null tests of time reversal symmetry in forward scattering. This could yield more stringent limits on T-odd P-even observables. A excellent candidate for such experiments is the proton deuteron system. This system is analyzed in terms of effective T-violating P-conserving nucleon-nucleon interactions and bounds on coupling strengths that might be expected are given.
The origin of the large CP-odd and T-odd asymmetry observed in the decay K_L -> pi^+ pi^- e^+ e^- is traced to the polarization properties of the photon in the decay K_L -> pi^+ pi^- gamma. The Stokes vector of the photon S = (S_1, S_2, S_3) is studied as a function of the photon energy and found to possess CP-violating components S_1 and S_2 which are sizeable over a large part of the phase space, despite being proportional to the epsilon parameter of the K_L wave function. The component S_2 is T-even and manifests itself as a circular polarization of the photon, while S_1 is T-odd and gives …
We consider the decays of a correlated neutral-meson--antimeson state with C-parity +1. We show that there is CPT noninvariance in the mixing of the neutral mesons if, for any two decay modes f and g, the decay rate has a component R_A which is antisymmetric under the interchange of the decay times t_1 and t_2. In particular, one may cleanly extract the CPT-noninvariance parameter with the help of R_A by using opposite-sign dilepton events.
Time-Reversal-Invariance non-conservation has for the first time been unequivocally demonstrated in a direct measurement, one of the results of the CPLEAR experiment. What is the situation then with regard to time-reversal-invariance non-conservation in systems other than the neutral kaon system? Two classes of tests of time-reversal-invariance need to be distinguished: the first one deals with parity violating (P-odd)/time-reversal-invariance non-conserving (T-odd) interactions, while the second one deals with P-even/T-odd interactions (assuming CPT conservation this implies C-conjugation non…
Scattering of protons with transversal polarization $p_y^p$ on deuterons with tensor polarization $P_{xz}$ provides a null-test signal for time-reversal (T) invariance violating but parity (P) conserving effects. We calculate the corresponding null-test observable at beam energies 100-1000 MeV within the spin-dependent Glauber theory considering T-violating P-conserving nucleon-nucleon interactions. The S-wave component of the deuteron wave function as well as the D-wave are taken into account and the latter is found to play an important role for the magnitude and the energy dependence of the …
Motivated by the recent CPLEAR measurement on the time-reversal non-invariance, we review the situation concerning the experimental measurements of charge conjugation, parity violation and time reversibility, in systems with non-Hermitean Hamiltonians. This includes in particular neutral meson systems, like K0-barK0, D0-barD0 and B0-barB0. We discuss the formalism that describes particle-antiparticle mixing and time evolution of states, paying particular emphasis to the orthogonality conditions of incoming and outgoing states. As a result, we confirm that the CPLEAR experiment makes a direct m…
Time-Reversal-Invariance non-conservation has now been unequivocally demonstrated in a direct measurement at CPLEAR. What about tests of time-reversal-invariance in systems other than the kaon system? Tests of time-reversal-invariance belong to two classes: searches for parity violating (P-odd)/time-reversal-invariance-odd (T-odd) interactions, and for P-even/T-odd interactions (assuming CPT conservation this implies C-conjugation non-conservation). Limits on a P-odd/T-odd interaction follow from measurements of the electric dipole moment of the neutron (with a present upper limit of 6 x 10^-2…
We apply the large-$N_c$ expansion to the time-reversal-invariance-violating (TV) nucleon-nucleon potential. The operator structures contributing to next-to-next-to-leading order in the large-$N_c$ counting are constructed. For the TV and parity-violating case we find a single operator structure at leading order. The TV but parity-conserving potential contains two leading-order terms, which however are suppressed by 1/$N_c$ compared to the parity-violating potential. Comparison with phenomenological potentials, including the chiral EFT potential in the TV parity-violating case, leads to large-…
The direct observation of time reversal symmetry violation (TV) is important for the test of $CPT$ conservation and the Standard Model. In this paper, we study both time-dependent and time-independent genuine TV signals in entangled $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ pairs. A possible $CPT$-violation effect called the $ω$ effect is also investigated. In the $C=-1$ entangled state, the asymmetries due to TV are calculated to be of the order of $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-4}$ within the Standard Model, but the modification due to the $ω$ effect in the $C=-1$ states is found to be about $10\%-30\%$ when $|ω|\sim 10^{-4}$. T…
Weak interactions break time-reversal (T) symmetry in the two-state system of neutral K mesons. We present and discuss a two-state mechanical system, a Foucault-type pendulum on a rotating table, for a full representation of K0 K0bar transitions by the pendulum motions including T violation. The pendulum moves with two different oscillation frequencies and two different magnetic dampings. Its equation of motion is identical with the differential equation for the real part of the CPT-symmetric K-meson wave function. The pendulum is able to represent microscopic CP and T violation with CPT symme…
The combination of transverse momentum and polarization effects in hard scattering processes, e.g polarized deep-inelastic leptoproduction, results in a rich variety of information on the hadronic structure. This information is encoded in a correspondingly large number of functions depending on both, longitudinal fractional momenta $x$ and transverse momenta $p_T$. Integration over transverse momenta establishes the connection to the usual distribution and fragmentation functions. Constraints from hermiticity and invariance under parity operation induce some relations between different functio…
We focus on two aspects of CPT invariance in neutral-meson--antimeson ($M^0 \bar M^0$) mixing: 1. Tests of CPT invariance, using only the property of ``lack of vacuum regeneration'', which occurs as a part of the well-known Lee--Oehme--Yang (LOY) theory; 2. Methods for extracting the CPT-violating mixing parameter $θ$ through explicit calculations by using the LOY-type theory fully. In the latter context, we demonstrate the importance of the C-even $| M^0 \bar M^0>$ state. In particular, by measuring the time dependence of opposite-sign dilepton events arising from decays of the C-even and C-o…
We demonstrate that polarization measurements in exclusive semileptonic B decays are powerful tools for unraveling non-standard model sources of T-violation. Measurements of the transverse polarization of the tau lepton in the B to D tau nu and B to D* tau nu decays probe separately effective scalar and pseudoscalar CP-violating four-Fermi interactions, whereas the D* polarization in the B to D* l nu (l=e,mu) decay is sensitive to an effective right-handed quark current interaction. Two T-odd polarization structures exist involving the D* polarization and they can be isolated and studied separ…
We revisit various results, which have been obtained by the BABAR and Belle Collaborations over the last twelve years, concerning symmetry properties of the Hamiltonian, which governs the time evolution and the decay of neutral B mesons. We find that those measurements, which established CP violation in B meson decay, 12 years ago, had as well established T (time-reversal) symmetry violation. They also confirmed CPT symmetry in the decay (T_CPT = 0) and symmetry with respect to time-reversal (epsilon? = 0) and to CPT (delta? = 0) in the B0 ?B0bar oscillation.
We show that a system of quarks interacting with chiral fields provides a physical representation of a ``non-standard'' time reversal for particle multiplets proposed by Weinberg. As an application, we argue that, if the internal structure of hadrons is described by a chiral lagrangian, the so-called time-reversal-odd quark distribution functions might not be forbidden by time-reversal invariance.
We discuss various aspects of parity, CP, and time reversal invariances in QCD. In particular, we focus attention on the previously proposed possibility that these experimentally established symmetries of strong interactions may be broken at finite temperature and/or density. This would have dramatic signatures in relativistic heavy ion collisions; we describe some of the most promising signals.
Planning and interpretation of the experiments searching for the time reversal (T) and parity (P) violation in neutron reactions require values of the matrix elements of the T,P-violating nuclear forces between nuclear compound states. We calculate the root mean square values and the ratio of the matrix elements of the T,P-violating and P-violating interactions using statistical theory based on the properties of chaotic compound states and present the results in terms of the fundamental parameters in four different forms: in terms of the constants of the contact nuclear interaction, meson exch…
During the recent years experiments with neutral kaons have yielded remarkably sensitive results which are pertinent to such fundamental phenomena as CPT invariance (protecting causality), time-reversal invariance violation, coherence of wave functions, and entanglement of kaons in pair states. We describe the phenomenological developments and the theoretical conclusions drawn from the experimental material. An outlook to future experimentation is indicated.
We outline how the time-reversal symmetry T can be systematically used to test the Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism embedded in the CKM matrix using pairs of B mesons created at the Upsilon(4S) and pairs of D mesons from psi(3770).
We present two new results on relativistic hydrodynamics with anomalies and external electromagnetic fields, "Chiral MagnetoHydroDynamics" (CMHD). First, we study CMHD in four dimensions at second order in the derivative expansion assuming the conformal/Weyl invariance. We classify all possible independent conformal second order viscous corrections to the energy-momentum tensor and to the U(1) current in the presence of external electric and/or magnetic fields, and identify eighteen terms that originate from the triangle anomaly. We then propose and motivate the following guiding principle to …
Weak decays of beauty baryons like Λ_b (\barΛ_b) into Λ(\barΛ) and V (J^P = 1^-), where both decay products are polarized, offer interesting opportunities to perform tests of time reversal and CP violations and of CPT invariance. We propose a model independent parametrization of the angular distribution and of the polarization of the final resonances, by means of the spin density matrix. The transverse component of the polarization is sensitive to time reversal violations, moreover CP-and CPT-sensitive observables are defined.
Weak decays of beauty baryons like Lambda_b into Lambda V(J^P=1^-), where the produced resonances are polarized, offer interesting opportunity to perform tests of Time-Reversal Invariance. This paper emphasizes the particular role of the resonance polarization-vectors and their physical properties by symmetry transformations. In particular, it is shown that the normal component of a polarization-vector, as defined in the Jackson's frame, is Lorentz invariant and could get large values, notably in the case of J/psi production.
We derive the time-reversal modified universality for both quark and gluon Sivers function from the parity and time-reversal invariance of QCD. We calculate the single transverse-spin asymmetry of inclusive lepton from the decay of $W$ bosons in polarized proton-proton collision at RHIC, in terms of the Sivers function. We find that although the asymmetry is diluted from the $W$ decay, the lepton asymmetry is at the level of several percent and is measurable for a good range of lepton rapidity at RHIC. We argue that this measurable lepton asymmetry at RHIC is an excellent observable for testin…

We describe the phenomenological developments and the theoretical conclusions drawn from the experimental material. An outlook to future experimentation is indicated. An overview of formal similarities in fields outside neutral kaons is included.
A system of quarks interacting with chiral fields is shown to provide a physical realization of a "non-standard" time reversal for particle multiplets which mixes the multiplet components. We argue that, if the internal structure of the nucleon is governed by a chiral dynamics, the so-called T-odd quark distribution functions are not forbidden by time-reversal invariance and hence might be non vanishing. This agrees with some other recent results. From a phenomenological point of view, this would give rise to single-spin asymmetries in inclusive processes involving a transversely polarized nuc…
Parity violating (PV) as well as parity and time-reversal invariance violating (PTRIV) effects are enhanced a million times in neutron reactions near p-wave compound resonances. We present the calculation of such effects using a statistical theory based on the properties of chaotic eigenstates and discuss a possibility to extract the strength constants of PTRIV interactions from the experimental data, including nucleon-nucleon and pion-nucleon CP-violating interactions, the QCD theta-term and the quark chromo-EDM. PV effects have random sign for all target nuclei except for 232Th, where PV eff…
Symmetry transformations have been proven a bedrock tool for understanding the nature of particle interactions, formulating and testing fundamental theories. Based on the up to now unbroken CPT symmetry, the violation of the CP symmetry between matter and antimatter by weak interactions, discovered in the decay of kaons in 1964 and observed more recently in 2001 in B mesons, strongly suggests that the behavior of these particles under weak interactions must also be asymmetric under time reversal T. However, until the recent years there has not been a direct detection of the expected time-rever…
Definitions of entropy usually assume time-reversal (T) invariance of interactions, yet microscopically T is known to be violated. We present a detailed computational example of (uncharged) particle species separation (Maxwell demon) using an interaction that violates both parity (P) and T so that PT is preserved, consistent with the CPT invariance required in quantum field theory (C is charge conjugation). This illustrates how T-violating forces can produce more organized states from disorganized ones, contrary to expectations based on increase of entropy. We also outline several scenarios in…
We study breakdown of $CPT$ symmetry which can occur in the decay process $B \bar B \to l^\pm X^\mp f$ with $f$ being a CP eigenstate. In this process, the standard model expectations for time ordered semi-leptonic and hadronic events, i.e. which of the two decays takes place first, can be altered in the case that there is a violation of the $CPT$ symmetry. To illustrate this possibility, we identify and study several time integrated observables. We find that an experiment with $10^{9}$ $B\bar B$ pairs, has the capability for improving the bound on $CPT$ violating parameter or perhaps observe …
An overview of current experimental bounds on $CPT$ violation in neutral meson mixing is given. New values for the $CPT$ asymmetry in the $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ systems are deduced from published BaBar, Belle and LHCb results. With dedicated analyses, LHCb will be able to further improve the bounds on $CPT$ violation in the $D^0$, $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ systems. Since $CPT$ violation implies violation of Lorentz invariance in an interacting local quantum field theory, the observed $CPT$ asymmetry will exhibit sidereal- and boost-dependent variations. Such $CPT$-violating and Lorentz-violating effects ar…
In the framework of a renormalizable quantum field theory and taking the example of neutral kaons, CP violation is shown to be a dynamical consequence of the anomalous scaling of the fields; its connection to the mass splitting is exhibited. It is also shown to be compatible with the normality condition [M,M^\dagger]=0 for the renormalized mass matrix.
A channelled particle, which moves in a crystal, alongside with electromagnetic interaction also experiences weak interaction with electrons and nuclei, as well as strong interaction with nuclei. Measurements of polarization vector and angular distribution of particles scattered by axes (planes) of unbent crystal enable to obtain limits for the EDM value and for values of constants describing P- and T-odd interactions. The same measurements also allow studying magnetic dipole moment of charged and neutral particles. Investigation of left-right asymmetry by the use of two unbent crystals makes …
Nuclear electric dipole moments of $^{3}He$ and $^{3}H$ are calculated using Time Reversal Invariance Violating (TRIV) potentials based on the meson exchange theory, as well as the ones derived by using pionless and pionful effective field theories, with nuclear wave functions obtained by solving Faddeev equations in configuration space for the complete Hamiltonians comprising both TRIV and realistic strong interactions. The obtained results are compared with the previous calculations of $^{3}He$ EDM and with time reversal invariance violating effects in neutron-deuteron scattering.
Single-spin asymmetries were long thought to vanish in high-energy scattering processes because of their specific time-reversal behavior. Time-reversal-odd phenomena, however, appear naturally when one includes effects of intrinsic transverse momenta of partons. The partons, quarks and gluons, enter the description of high-energy scattering processes in correlators which contain quark and gluon fields. The correlators, parameterized in terms of distribution and fragmentation functions, constitute matrix elements of non-local field configurations. For transverse momentum dependent (TMD) correla…
Having in mind that physical systems have different levels of structure we develop the concept of external, internal and total improper Lorentz transformation (space inversion and time reversal). A particle obtained from the ordinary one by the application of internal space inversion or time reversal is generally a different particle. From this point of view the intrinsic parity of a nuclear particle (`elementary particle') is in fact the external intrinsic parity, if we take into account the internal structure of a particle. We show that non-conservation of the external parity does not necess…
Nuclear physics tests of parity- and time-reversal invariance have both shaped the development of the Standard Model and provided key tests of its predictions. These studies now provide vital input in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. We give a brief review of a few key experimental and theoretical developments in the history of this sub-field of nuclear physics as well as a short outlook, focusing on weak decays, parity-violation in electron scattering, and searches for permanent electric dipole moments of the neutron and neutral atoms.
The time reversal and irreversibility in conventional quantum mechanics are compared with those of the rigged Hilbert space quantum mechanics. We discuss the time evolution of Gamow and Gamow-Jordan vectors and show that the rigged Hilbert space case admits a new kind of irreversibility which does not appear in the conventional case. The origin of this irreversibility can be traced back to different initial-boundary conditions for the states and observables. It is shown that this irreversibility does not contradict the experimentally tested consequences of the time-reversal invariance of the c…
Transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) were investigated at the twists 3 and 4 for spin-1 hadrons in addition to the twist-2 ones. They were found by studying all the possible decomposition of a quark correlation function in a Lorentz-invariant way with the Hermiticity and parity invariance. The time-reversal invariance was not imposed for the TMDs due to an active role of gauge links; however, they were used for collinear parton distribution functions (PDFs) by integrating the TMDs over the transverse momentum. We found that 30 TMDs exist in the tensor-polarized sp…
We compute the dynamical relaxation times for chiral transport phenomena in strongly coupled regime using the AdS/CFT correspondence. These relaxation times can be a useful proxy for the dynamical time scale for achieving equilibrium spin-polarization of quasi-particles in the presence of magnetic field and fluid vorticity. We identify the Kubo relations for these relaxation times and clarify some previous issues regarding time-dependence of the Chiral Vortical Effect. We study the consequences of imposing time-reversal invariance on parity-odd thermal noise fluctuations that are related to ch…
The existence of permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) and magnetic quadrupole moments (MQMs) violate both time reversal invariance ($T$) and parity ($P$). Following the $CPT$ theorem they also violate combined $CP$ symmetry. Nuclear EDM are completely screened in atoms and molecules while interaction between electrons and MQM creates atomic and molecular EDM which can be measured and used to test CP-violation theories. Nuclear MQM are produced by the nucleon-nucleon $T,P$-odd interaction and by nucleon EDM. In this work we study the effect of enhancement of the nuclear MQM due to the nucle…
We have calculated the atomic electric dipole moments (EDMs) induced in ^{199}Hg, ^{129}Xe, ^{223}Rn, ^{225}Ra, and ^{239}Pu by their respective nuclear Schiff moments S. The results are (in units 10^{-17}S(e {fm}^{3})^{-1}e cm): d(^{199}Hg)=-2.8, d(^{129}Xe)=0.38, d(^{223}Rn)=3.3, d(^{225}Ra)=-8.5, d(^{239}Pu)=-11. We have also calculated corrections to the parity- and time-invariance-violating (P,T-odd) spin-axis interaction constant in TlF. These results are important for the interpretation of atomic and molecular experiments on EDMs in terms of fundamental P,T-odd parameters.
