We investigate the phase structure of SU(3) gauge theory in four and five dimensions with one compact dimension by using perturbative one-loop and PNJL-model-based effective potentials, with emphasis on spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking. When adjoint matter with the periodic boundary condition is introduced, we have rich phase structure in the quark-mass and compact-size space with gauge-symmetry-broken phases, called the $SU(2)\times U(1)$ split and the $U(1)\times U(1)$ re-confined phases. Our result is qualitatively consistent with the recent lattice calculations. When fundamental quarks are introduced in addition to adjoint quarks, the split phase becomes more dominant and larger as a result of explicit center symmetry breaking. We also show that another $U(1)\times U(1)$ phase (pseudo-reconfined phase) with negative vacuum expectation value of Polyakov loop exists in this case. We study chiral properties in these theories and show that chiral condensate gradually decreases and chiral symmetry is slowly restored as the size of the compact dimension is decreased.
We pursue the possibility of the scenario in which the Higgs field is identified with the extra-space component of a bulk gauge field. The space-time we take is M$^{4}$ $\otimes$ S$^1$/Z$_2$. We show that a non-trivial Z$_2$-parity assignment allows some of the extra-space component to have radiatively induced VEV, which strongly modifies the mass spectrum and gauge symmetry of the theory, realized by oribifolding. In particular we investigate the dynamical mass generation of zero-mode fermion and spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking due to the VEV. The gauge theories we adopt are a prototype m…
We discuss the gauge symmetry breaking via the Hosotani mechanism by using exact results on supersymmetric gauge theories based on the localization method. We use the theories on S^2 x S^1 Euclidean space, and study how the effective potential for the Wilson line phase varies by running an imaginary chemical potential. In order to break the symmetry, we find that large R-charge is necessary. With such large R-charge, we study the phase structure of the theory. In addition, we observed that a finite size effect on our curved space when we take R-charge is not so large.
It is pointed out that phase structures of gauge theories compactified on non-simply connected spaces are not trivial. As a demonstration, an SU(2) gauge model on $M^3\otimes S^1$ is studied and is shown to possess three phases: Hosotani, Higgs and coexisting phases. The critical radius and the order of the phase transitions are explicitly determined. A general discussion about phase structures for small and large scales of compactified spaces is given. The appearance of phase transitions suggests a GUT scenario in which the gauge hierarchy problem is replaced by a dynamical problem of how to …
Gauge theory defined on the orbifold $M^4 \times (S^1/Z_2)$ is investigated from the viewpoint of the Hosotani mechanism. Rearrangement of gauge symmetry takes place due to the dynamics of Wilson line phases. The physical symmetry of the theory, in general, differs from the symmetry of the boundary conditions. Several sets of boundary conditions having distinct symmetry can be related by gauge transformations, belonging to the same equivalence class. The Hosotani mechanism guarantees the same physics in all theories in one equivalent class. Examples are presented in the SU(5) theory. Zero mode…
We construct a realistic model of CP violation in which CP is broken in the process of dimensional reduction and orbifold compactification from a five dimensional theories with $SU(3)\times SU(3) \times SU(3)$ gauge symmetry. CP violation is a result of the Hosotani type gauge configuration in the higher dimension.
Motivated by the search for possible CP violating terms in the trace of the energy-momentum tensor in theories coupled to gravity we revisit the problem of trace anomalies in chiral theories. We recalculate the latter and ascertain that in the trace of the energy-momentum tensor of theories with chiral fermions at one-loop the Pontryagin density appears with an imaginary coefficient. We argue that this may break unitarity, in which case the trace anomaly has to be used as a selective criterion for theories, analogous to the chiral anomalies in gauge theories. We analyze some remarkable consequ…
The Standard Model Higgs boson can be identified with the extra dimensional component of a gauge boson in a higher dimensional theory where the gauge group is broken to the Standard Model group by the orbifold action. In that case the Standard Model symmetry can be radiatively broken by the Hosotani mechanism and the Higgs boson mass is protected from bulk quadratic divergences by the higher dimensional gauge theory without any need of supersymmetry. However the latter does not protect a priori the Higgs mass from brane quadratic divergences. We show by an explicit calculation in the orbifold …
Fluctuations of conserved quantum numbers are associated with the corresponding susceptibilities because of the symmetry of the system. The underlying fact is that these fluctuations as defined through the static correlators become identical to the direct calculation of these susceptibilities defined through the thermodynamic derivatives, due to the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Through a rigorous exercise we explicitly show that a diagrammatic calculation of the static correlators associated with the conserved quark number fluctuations and the corresponding susceptibilities are possible in…
We provide a description of the five-dimensional Higgs mechanism in supersymmetric gauge theories compactified on the orbifold S^1/Z_2 by means of the N=1 superfield formalism. Goldstone bosons absorbed by vector multiplets can come either from hypermultiplets or from gauge multiplets of opposite parity (Hosotani mechanism). Supersymmetry is broken by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. In the presence of massive hypermultiplets and gauge multiplets, with different supersymmetric masses, the radion can be stabilized with positive (de Sitter) vacuum energy. The masses of vector and hypermultiplets ca…
We consider 5 dimensional gauge theories where the 5th direction is compactified on the orbifold S^1/Z_2, and where the 5th components of the gauge bosons play the role of the Standard Model Higgs boson (gauge-Higgs unification). The gauge symmetry breaking is realized through the appropriate orbifold boundary conditions and through the Hosotani mechanism. We show that for {\em any such theory} the assumption that the low-energy vector-boson spectrum consists of the W^\pm, Z and γonly, is inconsistent with the experimental requirements \sin^2θ_W\simeq 1/4 and ρ\equiv m_W^2/(m_Z^2\cos^2θ_w)=1.
This paper revisits the nonlinear realization of spontaneously broken N=1 supersymmetry. It is shown that the constrained superfield formalism can be reinterpreted in the language of standard realization of nonlinear supersymmetry via a new and simpler route. Explicit formulas of actions are presented for general renormalizable theories with or without gauge interactions. The nonlinear Wess-Zumino gauge is discussed and relations are pointed out for different definitions of gauge fields. In addition, a general procedure is provided to deal with theories of arbitrary Kahler potentials.
The canonical description is presented for the string with pointlike masses at the ends in 1+1 dimensions in two different gauges: in the proper time gauge and in the light cone one. The classical canonical transformation is written out explicitly, which relates physical variables in both gauges, and equivalence of two classical theories is demonstrated in such a way. Both theories are quantized, and it is shown that quantum theories are not unitary equivalent. It happens due to the fact that the canonical transformation depends on interaction. The quantum Poincare algebra proves to be closed …
We take the standard model to be an effective theory including higher dimensional operators suppressed by scale $Λ$ and re-examine the higgs mass bounds from the requirements of vacuum stability. Our results show that the effects of the higher dimensional operators on the higgs mass limits are significant. As an implication of our results, we study the vacuum stability higgs mass bounds in theories with extra dimensions.
We investigate how fields transform under the Poincaré group in nonrelativistic effective field theories of QCD. In constructing these transformations, we rely only on symmetries and field redefinitions to limit the number of allowed terms. By requiring invariance of the action under these transformations, nontrivial relations between Wilson coefficients for both nonrelativistic QCD and potential nonrelativistic QCD are derived. We show explicitly how the Poincaré algebra is satisfied, and how this gives complementary information on the Wilson coefficients. We also briefly discuss the implicat…
We address and solve the long-standing gauge-invariance problem of the nucleon spin structure. Explicitly gauge-invariant spin and orbital angular momentum operators of quarks and gluons are obtained. This was previously thought to be an impossible task, and opens a more promising avenue towards the understanding of the nucleon spin. Our research also justifies the traditional use of the canonical, gauge-dependent angular momentum operators of photons and electrons in the multipole-radiation analysis and labeling of atomic states; and sheds much light on the related energy-momentum problem in …
We have computed one-loop bulk and brane mass renormalization effects in a five-dimensional gauge theory compactified on the M_4 \times S^1/Z_2 orbifold, where an arbitrary gauge group G is broken by the orbifold action to its subgroup H. The space-time components of the gauge boson zero modes along the H generators span the gauge theory on the orbifold fixed point branes while the zero modes of the higher-dimensional components of the gauge bosons along the G/H generators play the role of Higgs fields with respect to the gauge group H. No quadratic divergences in the mass renormalization of t…
Grand unified theory defined on higher-dimensional orbifolds provides a new way to solve the hierarchy problem. In gauge theory on an orbifold many different sets of boundary conditions imposed at orbifold fixed points (branes) are related by large gauge transformations, forming an equivalent class of boundary conditions. Thanks to the Hosotani mechanism the physics remains the same in all theories in a given equivalent class, though the symmetry of boundary conditions differs from each other. Quantum dynamics of Wilson line phases rearranges the gauge symmetry. In the nonsupersymmetric SU(5) …
We study the phase structure of the gauge theories in the space-time with one compact dimension, where the gauge symmetry can be broken by the Hosotani mechanism. As the extra dimension, we consider the SO(5) x U(1) gauge-Higgs unification in the Randall-Sundrum space-time which reproduce the 126 GeV Higgs mass. It is found that the thermal phase transition of the electroweak symmetry is almost second order and the critical temperature is around 160 GeV for z_L < 10^7 and n_F=3.
In 1976 't Hooft introduced an elegant approach towards understanding the physical consequences of the topological structures that appear in non-Abelian gauge theories. These effects are concisely summarized in terms of an effective multi-fermion interaction. These old arguments provide a link between a variety of recent and sometimes controversial ideas including discrete chiral symmetries appearing in some models for unification, ambiguities in the definition of quark masses, and flaws with some simulation algorithms in lattice gauge theory.
Previous studies of high-energy jet stopping in strongly-coupled plasmas have lacked a clear gauge-theory specification of the initial state. We show how to set up a well-defined gauge theory problem to study jet stopping in pure {\cal N}=4 super Yang Mills theory (somewhat analogous to Hofman and Maldacena's studies at zero temperature) and solve it by using gauge-gravity duality for real-time, finite-temperature 3-point correlators. Previous studies have found that the stopping distance scales with energy as E^{1/3} (with disagreement on the gauge coupling dependence). We do find that none o…
The inflation model of Gaillard, Lyth and Murayama is revisited, with a systematic scan of the parameter space for dilaton stabilization during inflation.
We revisit the semi-classical calculation of the size distribution of instantons at finite temperature in non-abelian gauge theories in four dimensions. The relevant functional determinants were first calculated in the seminal work of Gross, Pisarski and Yaffe and the results were used for a wide variety of applications including axions most recently. In this work we show that the uncertainty on the numerical evaluations and semi-analytical expressions are two orders of magnitude larger than claimed. As a result various quantities computed from the size distribution need to be reevaluated, for…
Schwinger's formalism in quantum field theory can be easily implemented in the case of scalar theories in $D$ dimension with exponential interactions, such as $μ^D\exp(αϕ)$. In particular, we use the relation $$ \exp\big(α{δ\over δJ(x)}\big)\exp(-Z_0[J])=\exp(-Z_0[J+α_x]) $$ with $J$ the external source, and $α_x(y)=αδ(y-x)$. Such a shift is strictly related to the normal ordering of $\exp(αϕ)$ and to a scaling relation which follows by renormalizing $μ$. Next, we derive a new formulation of perturbation theory for the potentials $V(ϕ)={λ\over n!}:ϕ^n:$, using the generating functional associa…
We revisit the gauge-covariant canonical formalism by separating explicitly physical and gauge degrees of freedom. We show in particular that the gauge-invariant linear and angular momentum operators proposed by Chen et al. can consistently be derived from the standard procedure based on the Noether's theorem. Finally, we demonstrate that this approach is essentially equivalent to the gauge-invariant canonical formalism based on the concept of Dirac variables. Because of many similarities with the background field method, the formalism developed here should also be relevant to general relativi…
We attempt to obtain realistic glueball Regge trajectories from the gauge/string correspondence. To this end we study closed spinning string configurations in two supergravity backgrounds: Klebanov-Strassler (KS) and Maldacena-Nunez (MN) which are dual to confining gauge theories. These backgrounds represent two embeddings of N=1 SYM, in the large rank limit, in string theory. The classical configuration we consider is that of a folded closed string spinning in a supergravity region with vanishing transverse radius (τ= 0) which is dual to the IR of the gauge theory. Classically, a spinning str…
We present an alternative way to calculate the screening of the static potential between two charges in (non)abelian gauge theories at high temperatures. Instead of a loop expansion of a gauge boson self-energy, we evaluate the energy shift of the vacuum to order e^2 after applying an external static magnetic field and extract a temperature- and momentum-dependent dielectric permittivity. The Hard Thermal Loop (HTL) gluon and photon Debye masses are recovered from the lowest lying Landau levels of the perturbed vacuum. In QED, the complete calculation exhibits an interesting cancellation of te…
As we demonstrate in a process independent way, in a nonlinear parameterization of the scalar sector of the standard model the Dyson summation of the Higgs self energy can be performed without violating the Ward Identities. This implies also the Goldstone boson equivalence theorem, in the limited range of its validity in effective field theories. This proves an earlier conjecture of Valencia and Willenbrock. Furthermore, the full Higgs propagator is independent of the gauge parameters. These results are consistent with the extension of the `gauge flip' formalism for the construction of gauge i…
