We address and solve the long-standing gauge-invariance problem of the nucleon spin structure. Explicitly gauge-invariant spin and orbital angular momentum operators of quarks and gluons are obtained. This was previously thought to be an impossible task, and opens a more promising avenue towards the understanding of the nucleon spin. Our research also justifies the traditional use of the canonical, gauge-dependent angular momentum operators of photons and electrons in the multipole-radiation analysis and labeling of atomic states; and sheds much light on the related energy-momentum problem in gauge theories, especially in connection with the nucleon momentum.
The questions on the presense and quantitative role of the constant terms in the real part of the high-energy photon-nucleon and photon-nucleus amplitudes representing the contribution of the non-Regge (the fixed j=0-pole) singularities in the finite-energy sum rules (FESR) for the photoabsorption cross sections on nucleons and the lightest atomic nuclei are discussed and new testable relations are presented for relevant combinations of the Compton scattering amplitudes.
We analyzed the presently available experimental data on nucleon electromagnetic form factors within a multipole model based on dispersion relations. A good fit of the data is achieved by considering the coefficients of the multipole expansions as logarithmic functions of the momentum transfer squared. The superconvergence relations, applied to this coefficients, makes the model agree with unitary constraints and pQCD asymptotics for the Dirac and Pauli form factors. The soft photon emission is proposed as a mechanism responsible for the difference between the Rosenbluth, polarization and beam…
It is argued that Weinberg's approach to the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction problem within effective field theory provides a consistent power counting for renormalized diagrams. Within this scheme the NN potential is organized as an expansion in terms of small quantities like small external momenta and the pion mass (divided by the characteristic large scale of the effective theory). Physical observables to any given order in these small quantities are calculated from the solutions of the Lippmann-Schwinger (or Schr\" odinger) equation.
We present a complete study of the leading-twist quark Wigner distributions in the nucleon, discussing both the $\mathsf T$-even and $\mathsf T$-odd sector, along with all the possible configurations of the quark and nucleon polarizations. We identify the basic multipole structures associated with each distribution in the transverse phase space, providing a transparent interpretation of the spin-spin and spin-orbit correlations of quarks and nucleon encoded in these functions. Projecting the multipole parametrization of the Wigner functions onto the transverse-position and the transverse-momen…
A dynamical investigation of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction by using the resonating group method (RGM) in a chiral SU(3) quark model has been revisited. The considered quark-quark interaction includes, besides the one-gluon exchange (OGE) and the phenomenological confinement potential, the nonet scalar and pseudoscalar meson exchanges derived from the spontaneous SU(3) chiral symmetry breaking. The physical consistency requirement that the wave functions of single baryons satisfy the minimums of the Hamiltonian has been strictly imposed in determination of the model parameters. The calcu…
We present a detailed discussion of the elastic scattering of a supersymmetric neutralino off a nucleon or nucleus, with emphasis on the spin--independent interaction. We carefully treat QCD effects on the squark exchange contribution. In particular, we identify a class of terms that survive even in the absence of mixing in both the neutralino and squark sectors; the corresponding quark and gluon operators also appear in analyses of deep--inelastic lepton--nucleon scattering (``twist--2 operators''), so their hadronic matrix elements are well known. We also re--emphasize the importance of mixi…
We propose a new, renormalizable approach to nucleon-nucleon scattering in chiral effective field theory based on the manifestly Lorentz invariant form of the effective Lagrangian without employing the heavy-baryon expansion. For the pion-less case and for the formulation based on perturbative pions, the new approach reproduces the known results obtained by Kaplan, Savage and Wise. Contrary to the standard formulation utilizing the heavy-baryon expansion, the nonperturbatively resummed one-pion exchange potential can be renormalized by absorbing all ultraviolet divergences into the leading S-w…
At temperatures less than a few MeV, the efficiency of the neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung from nucleons interracting with the condensed pion field is much less than previously estimated by other authors. The physical reason for this is a periodic structure of the developed pion condensate. The repeated interactions of a nucleon with the periodic pion field modify the nucleon spectrum, which is split into two bands. The energy gap between the bands is about a few MeV or larger, even if the amplitude of the pion field is small compared with the pion mass.
We calculate isospin breaking in pion-nucleon scattering in the threshold region in the framework of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. All effects due to quark mass differences as well as real and virtual photons are consistently included. As an application, we discuss the energy dependence of the triangle relation that connects elastic scattering on the proton pi+- p --> pi+- p with the charge exchange reaction pi- p --> pi0 n.
The anti-kaon nucleon system close to threshold is analyzed in view of the new accurate DEAR kaonic hydrogen data. The calculations are performed using chiral SU(3) effective field theory in combination with non-perturbative schemes based on coupled channels. Several variants of such approaches are compared with experimental data and the differences in the results are discussed. Coulomb and isospin breaking effects turn out to be important and are both taken into account. The pole structure of the Lambda(1405) resonance close to the anti-kaon nucleon threshold is critically examined.
Generalized parton distributions of the nucleon are accessed via exclusive leptoproduction of the real photon. While earlier analytical considerations of phenomenological observables were restricted to twist-three accuracy, i.e., taking into account only terms suppressed by a single power of the hard scale, in the present study we revisit this differential cross section within the helicity formalism and restore power-suppressed effects stemming from the process kinematics exactly. We restrict ourselves to the phenomenologically important case of lepton scattering off a longitudinally polarized…
The three complex form factors entering the $Δ\to Nγ^\ast$ vertex are calculated to ${\cal O}(ε^3)$ in the framework of a chiral effective theory with explicit Δ(1232) degrees of freedom included. It is shown that the low q^2 behavior of the form factors is governed by $πN$, $πΔ$ loop effects. Predictions are given for the q^2-dependence of the three transition-multipoles $M1(q^2), E2(q^2), C2(q^2)$. Furthermore, the role of presently unknown low energy constants that affect the values of the multipole ratios EMR(q^2) and CMR(q^2) is elucidated.
We update Jaffe's estimate of the strange isoscalar radius and magnetic moment of the nucleon. We make use of a recent dispersion--theoretical fit to the nucleon electromagnetic form factors and an improved description of symmetry breaking in the vector nonet. We find $μ_s = -0.24 \pm 0.03$~n.m. and $r_s^2 = 0.21 \pm 0.03$~fm$^2$. The strange formfactor $F_2^s (t)$ follows a dipole with a cut--off mass of 1.46~GeV, $F_2^s (t)= μ_s (1-t/2.14 \, {\rm GeV}^2 )^{-2}$. These numbers should be considered as upper limits on the strange vector current matrix--elements in the nucleon.
We have revisited the calculation of the neutron electric dipole moment in the presence of the CP-violating operators up to dimension five based on the chiral perturbation theory. Especially, we focus on the contribution of strangeness content. In the calculation, we extract the nucleon matrix elements of scalar-type quark operators from the results of the lattice QCD simulations, while those of the dipole-type quark-gluon operators are evaluated by using the method of the QCD sum rules. As a result, it is found that although the strangeness quantity in nucleon is small, the contribution of th…
The properties of the nucleons in nuclear medium have been investigated in the context of the flux tube model incorporating strangeness $(s\bar{s})$ contribution to proton structure in conformity with the experimental indication. Proton is described as a pentaquark system with strange quark contribution whereas neutron is described in three quark configuration. The Quasi particle model of diquark is used to describe the structures of the nucleons. Modifications of the properties like swelling, mass, incompressibility, ratio of the structure functions ($\frac{F_{2}^{n}(x)}{F_{2}^{p}(x)}$), Gott…
The dynamics of two heavy quarks inside the same hadron is probed against the double charm baryon results of SELEX. This can be seen as a part of the mechanism to bind tetraquarks with two heavy quarks and two light antiquarks. In the framework of potential models, it is possible to test the role of different effects: relativistic corrections, confinement, hyperfine forces, etc. It is conjectured that an additional interaction rescaled from the nucleon--nucleon system and acting between light quarks only, can help in bringing extra, possibly required, binding in tetraquarks.
Unitary and analytic ten-resonance model of the nucleon electromagnetic (e.m.) structure with canonical normalizations and QCD (up to the logarithmic correction) asymptotics is constructed on the four-sheeted Riemann surface, which provides a superposition of vector-meson pole and continuum contributions in a very natural way. As a result it describes simultaneously all existing experimental space-like and time-like data on the proton e.m. form factors (ff's) and on the neutron e.m. ff's as well. A crucial factor in the latter achievement is the inclusion of a contribution of the fourth excite…
Using constituent quark model constraints we calculate the gluon and sea-quark content of pions solely in terms of their valence density (fixed by πN Drell-Yan data) and the known sea and gluon distributions of the nucleon, using the most recent updated valence-like input parton densities of the nucleon. The resulting small-x dynamical QCD predictions for g^π(x,Q^2) and \bar{q}^π(x,Q^2) are unique and parameter free. Simple analytic parametrizations of the resulting parton distributions of the pion are presented in LO and NLO. These results and parametrizations will be important, among other t…
We investigate threshold pion photoproduction in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We give the expansion of the electric dipole amplitude $E_{0+}$ to three orders in $μ$, the ratio of the pion to nucleon mass, and show that it is slowly converging. We argue that this observable is not a good testing ground for the chiral dynamics of QCD. In contrast, we exhibit new and fastly converging low--energy theorems in the P--waves which should be used to constrain the data analysis. We also discuss the importance of polarization observables to accurately pin down certain multip…
We study the S-wave kaon-nucleon interactions for strangeness S=-1 in a novel relativistic chiral unitary approach based on coupled channels. Dispersion relations are used to perform the necessary resummation of the lowest order relativistic chiral Lagrangian. A good description of the data in the K^- p, πΣand πΛchannels is obtained. We show how this method can be systematically extended to higher orders, emphasizing its applicability to any scenario of strong self-interactions where the perturbative series diverges even at low energies. Discussions about the differences to existing approaches…
The physics of electromagnetic excitation of nucleon resonances and of their relevance in nucleon structure studies are discussed. Preliminary data from the CLAS detector on the N-Delta(1232) transition multipoles, the helicity amplitudes of the N*(1535), and the search for so-called "missing resonances" at Jefferson Lab are presented.
Our previous calculation of the spin-dependent structure function g_2 is revisited. The interest in this structure function is to a great extent motivated by the fact that it receives contributions from twist-two as well as from twist-three operators already in leading order of 1/Q^2 thus offering the unique possibility of directly assessing higher-twist effects. In our former calculation the lattice operators were renormalized perturbatively and mixing with lower-dimensional operators was ignored. However, the twist-three operator which gives rise to the matrix element d_2 mixes non-perturbat…
We analyse the impact of the recent measurement of kaonic hydrogen X rays by the SIDDHARTA collaboration on the allowed ranges for the kaon-deuteron scattering length in the framework of non-relativistic effective field theory. Based on data from KN scattering only, we predict the kaon-deuteron scattering length A_Kd= (-1.46 + i 1.08) fm, with an estimated uncertainty of about 25% in both the real and the imaginary part.
In the Bjorken limit of the present theory of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) the structure functions (up to anomalous dimensions and perturbative QCD corrections) are described by the parton model. However the current operator in the parton model does not properly commute with the representation operators corresponding to the Lorentz group, space reflection and time reversal. To investigate the violation of these symmetries in the parton model we consider a model in which the current operator explicitly satisfies extended Poincare invariance and current conservation. It is shown that due to b…
We study the latest $N_f=2+1+1$ and $N_f=2$ ETMC lattice QCD simulations of the nucleon masses and extract the pion-nucleon sigma term utilizing the Feynman-Hellmann theorem in SU(2) baryon chiral perturbation theory with the extended-on-mass-shell scheme. We find that the lattice QCD data can be described quite well already at the next-to-next-to-leading order. The overall picture remains essentially the same at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. Our final result is $σ_{πN}=50.2(1.2)(2.0)$ MeV, or equivalently, $f_{u/d}^N=0.0535(13)(21)$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and…
We present a projector formalism which allows to define dynamical polarizabilities of the nucleon from a multipole expansion of the nucleon Compton amplitudes. We give predictions for the energy dependence of these dynamical polarizabilities both from dispersion theory and from leading-one-loop chiral effective field theory. Based on the good agreement between the two theoretical frameworks, we conclude that the energy dependence of the dynamical polarizabilities is dominated by chiral dynamics, except in those multipole channels where the first nucleon resonance Delta(1232) can be excited. Bo…
We briefly review the progress and problems in the electromagnetic production of KLambda on the nucleon. The problem of the data discrepancy in this channel as well as the corresponding physics consequence are highlighted. We also discuss the effect of the new beam-recoil polarization data Cx and Cz on our analysis. For this purpose we use the isobar model Kaon-Maid and a recent multipoles model that can describe recent experimental data. We also present a new multipoles model for the KSigma channels to complete our analysis.
New kaon photoproduction data on a proton, gamma + p --> K+ + Lambda, are analyzed using a multipole approach. The background terms are given in terms of gauge invariant, crossing symmetric, Born diagrams with hadronic form factors, while the resonances are parameterized using Breit-Wigner forms. Preliminary results suggest a number of new resonances, as predicted by many quark model studies. A comparison between the extracted multipoles and those obtained from KAON-MAID is presented.
We reanalyse the magnetic moments of the baryon octet, decuplet, and antidecuplet within the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model, with SU(3) symmetry breaking taken into account. We consider the contributions of the mixing of higher representations to the magnetic moment operator arising from the SU(3) symmetry breaking. Dynamical parameters of the model are fixed by experimental data for the magnetic moments of the baryon octet and from the masses of the octet, decuplet and of $Θ^{+}$. The magnetic moment of $Θ^{+}$ depends rather strongly on the pion-nucleon sigma term and reads $-1.…
Following up on the plenary talk given by Ulf Meißner, I discuss a generalization of the concept of nucleon spin-polarizabilities in terms of multipole excitation/de-excitation and present an overview of the available theoretical predictions for these elusive but interesting structure parameters of the nucleon.
Revised analysis of $Σ$ beam asymmetry for $η$ photoproduction on the free proton reveals a resonant structure at $W\sim 1.69$ GeV. Comparison of experimental data with multipole decomposition based on the E429 solution of the SAID partial wave analysis and including narrow states, suggests a narrow ($Γ\leq 15$ MeV) resonance. Possible candidates are $P_{11}$, $P_{13}$, or $D_{13}$ resonances. The result is considered in conjunction with the recent evidence for a bump-like structure at $W\sim 1.67 - 1.68$ GeV in quasi-free $η$ photoproduction on the neutron.
The pion and nucleon mass differences generate a very pronounced cusp in the photoproduction reaction of a single neutral pion on the proton. A nonrelativistic effective field theory to describe this reaction is constructed. The approach is rigorous in the sense that it is an effective field theory with a consistent power counting scheme. Expressions for the S- and P-wave multipole amplitudes at one loop are given. The relation of the phase of the electric multipole E_0+ to the phase of the S-wave of pi^0 p --> pi^0 p scattering is discussed.
We analyze the determination of volume effects for correlation functions that depend on an external momentum. As a specific example, we consider finite volume nucleon current correlators, and focus on the nucleon magnetic moment. Because the multipole decomposition relies on SO(3) rotational invariance, the structure of such finite volume corrections is unrelated to infinite volume multipole form factors. One can deduce volume corrections to the magnetic moment only when a zero-mode photon coupling vanishes, as occurs at next-to-leading order in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. To dedu…
We calculate the charge quadrupole and magnetic octupole moments of baryons using a group theoretical approach based on broken SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry. The latter is an approximate symmetry of the QCD Lagrangian which becomes exact in the large color N_c limit. Spin-flavor symmetry breaking is induced by one-, two-, and three-quark terms in the electromagnetic current operator. Two- and three-quark currents provide the leading contributions for higher multipole moments, despite being of higher order in an 1/N_c expansion. Our formalism leads to relations between N --> N* transition multipol…
We propose a new implementation of target mass corrections to nucleon structure functions which, unlike existing treatments, has the correct kinematic threshold behavior at finite Q^2 in the x -> 1 limit. We illustrate the differences between the new approach and existing prescriptions by considering specific examples for the F_2 and F_L structure functions, and discuss the broader implications of our results, which call into question the notion of universal parton distribution at finite Q^2.
We analyze s-wave pion-nucleon scattering in a unitarized chiral effective Lagrangian including all dimension two contact terms. We find that both the S11(1535) and the S11(1650) are dynamically generated, but the S31(1620) is not. We further discuss the structure of these dynamically generated resonances.
We calculate the spin-polarizabilities of the nucleon by means of dispersion relation, where the pion photoproduction amplitude predicted by chiral soliton model is utilized. We consider the $Nπ$ and $Δπ$ channels in the pion-photoproduction amplitude, and also evaluate the contribution of the anomalous term of the $π^0γγ$ process. In a narrow decay-width limit of the $Δ$ particle the result coincides with that in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT) except for the interference part of the electric and magnetic amplitudes. A comparison with the multipole analysis is given.
An exact expression is derived for the meson production current off the nucleon for real and virtual photons which cleanly separates, in a model-independent manner, a tree-level expression that manifestly preserves local gauge invariance in terms of a generalized Ward-Takahashi identity from transverse final-state-interaction (FSI) terms. As discussed in some detail, this exact formulation is particularly well suited for implementing approximation schemes of exchange-current and FSI contributions (which in practice generally will be necessary) at any level of sophistication without violating l…
For excited nucleon states $N^*$ of arbitrary spin coupling to nucleon (N) and meson (M), we propose a Lorentz covariant orbital-spin (L-S) scheme for the effective $N^*NM$ couplings. To be used for the partial wave analysis of various $N^*$ production and decay processes, it combines merits of two conventional schemes, {\sl i.e.}, covariant effective Lagrangian approach and multipole analysis with amplitudes expanded according to angular momentum L. As examples, explicit formulae are given for $N^*\to Nπ$, $N^*\to Nω$ and $ψ\to N^*\bar N$ processes which are under current experimental studies…
If neutrinos are a significant contributor to the matter density of the universe, then they should have $\sim$ eV mass and cluster in galactic (super) cluster halos, and possibly in galactic halos as well. It was noted in the early 1980's that cosmic ray neutrinos with energy within $δE/E_R=Γ_Z/M_Z \sim 3%$ of the peak energy $E_R=4 (eV/m_ν)\times 10^{21}$ eV will annihilate on the nonrelativistic relic antineutrinos (and vice versa) to produce the Z-boson with an enhanced, resonant cross section of ${\cal O}(G_F)\sim 10^{-32}{cm}^2$. The result of the resonant neutrino annihilation is a hadro…
The near-threshold behavior of the ppbar invariant mass spectrum from the psi(3686) -> gamma ppbar decay reported recently by the BESIII Collaboration is analyzed. The enhancement in the ppbar invariant mass spectrum near threshold is nicely reproduced by the ppbar final-state interaction based on the isospin averaged 1S0 partial-wave amplitude as predicted by the Julich nucleon--antinucleon model. Contributions from the f_2(1910) or f_2(1950) mesons, as promoted in earlier works, are not needed.
The differential cross sections and s-wave and p-wave multipoles for $π^- p \to γn$ and $π^+ n \to γp$ have been calculated through $O(p^3)$ in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT). Fits to existing data allow several of the low energy constants to be determined. Generally results of the calculation compare well with dispersion relation predictions.
Electroproduction of pions on the nucleon near the threshold is analyzed within the framework of baryon chiral perturbation theory. We give a thorough discussion of the low--energy theorems related to charged and neutral electropionproduction. It is shown how the axial radius of the nucleon can be related to the S--wave multipoles $E_{0+}^{(-)}$ and $L_{0+}^{(-)}$. The chiral perturbation theory calculations of the $γ^\star p \to π^0 p$ reaction are found to be in good agreement with the recent near threshold data. We also discuss the influence of some isospin--breaking effects in this channel…
Recent results on inclusive and exclusive electroproduction experiments at Jefferson Lab are discussed. They include measurements of the spin responses for protons and neutrons in and above the resonance region, exclusive single and double pion production to measure resonance transition multipoles, and searches for predicted yet unobserved quark model states. A brief outlook into the new domain of generalized parton distribution is given as well.
We investigate the spin-independent part of the virtual Compton scattering (VCS) amplitude off the nucleon within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. We perform a consistent calculation to third order in external momenta according to Weinberg's power counting. With this calculation we can determine the second- and fourth-order structure-dependent coefficients of the general low-energy expansion of the spin-averaged VCS amplitude based on gauge invariance, crossing symmetry and the discrete symmetries. We discuss the kinematical regime to which our calculation can be applied and compar…
It is often claimed that 98% of the nucleon mass is generated by quantum chromodynamics. The decomposition of the nucleon mass based on the trace of the energy-momentum tensor suggests that gluons play by far a dominant role. About 25 years ago, Ji proposed another decomposition based on the energy component of the energy-momentum tensor, leading to a quite different picture. Recently, we critically revisited these decompositions and argued that both overlooked pressure effects. In particular we showed that Ji's decomposition, although mathematically correct, makes little sense from a physical…
The event of astroparticle collision at high energy was detected in 1975 during the balloon flight in the stratosphere. The data of hundred particle tracks in x-ray films have been re-analyzed in the style of LHC experiments: rapidity distributions of charged particles and transverse mass spectra of multi-particle production have been built. The comparison of multiple histograms with the expectations of the Quark-Gluon String Model (QGSM) gives us, at first sight, the conclusion that it might be the carbon-nucleus collision with the matter of atmosphere at the c.m.s. equivalent energy $\sqrt{s…
As guideline for forthcoming experiments, we present predictions from Chiral Effective Field Theory for polarized cross sections in low energy Compton scattering for photon energies below 170 MeV, both on the proton and on the neutron. Special interest is put on the role of the nucleon spin polarizabilities which can be examined especially well in polarized Compton scattering. We present a model-independent way to extract their energy dependence and static values from experiment, interpreting our findings also in terms of the low energy effective degrees of freedom inside the nucleon: The pola…
