We study particle current and occupation distribution in a recently proposed model for coherent quantum transport. In this model a system connected to mesoscopic Fermi reservoirs (mesoreservoir) is driven out of equilibrium by the action of superreservoirs with prescribed temperatures and chemical potentials described by a simple dissipative mechanism with the Lindblad equation. We compare exact (numerical) results for the non-equilibrium steady state particle current with theoretical expectations based on the Landauer formula and show that the model reproduce the behavior of coherent quantum systems in the expected parameter region. We also obtain the occupation distribution on the mesoreservoir in the non-equilibrium steady state and compare them with the occupation distribution on the leads in usual description of coherent quantum transport.
We propose a model of nonequilibrium quantum transport of particles and energy in a system connected to mesoscopic Fermi reservoirs (meso-reservoir). The meso-reservoirs are in turn thermalized to prescribed temperatures and chemical potentials by a simple dissipative mechanism described by the Lindblad equation. As an example, we study transport in monoatomic and diatomic chains of non-interacting spinless fermions. We show numerically the breakdown of the Onsager reciprocity relation due to the dissipative terms of the model.
We develop a theory for the nonequilibrium coherent transport through a mesoscopic region, based on the nonequilibrium Green function technique. The theory requires the weak coupling between the central mesoscopic region and the multiple electrodes connected to it, but allows arbitrary hopping and interaction in the central region. An equation determining the nonequilibrium distribution in the central interacting region is derived and plays an important role in the theory. The theory is applied to two special cases for demonstrations, revealing the novel effects associated with the combination…
A generalized Landauer formula, derived with the methods due to Keldysh, and Baym and Kadanoff, is gaining widespread use in the modeling of transport in a large number of different mesoscopic systems. We review some of the recent developments, including transport in semiconductor superlattices, calculation of noise, and nanoelectromechanical systems.
We derive non equilibrium statistical ensembles for a ballistic Aharonov-Bohm loop connected to several electrodes connected to reservoirs with different chemical potentials. A striking consequence of these non trivial ensembles is the emergence of quantum zero point fluctuations of the persistent current around the loop. Detailed predictions for the low frequency noise power are given.

We discuss a consequence of time reversal symmetry on thermoelectric effect in nonequilibrium coherent quantum transport. Starting with a quantum version of the fluctuation theorem, we show that there exist universal relations between the Peltier coefficient and the Seebeck coefficient of general mesoscopic systems with Coulomb interaction in a nonlinear regime. This extended Kelvin-Onsager relation may be used to obtain useful information on heat current, e.g. the nonlinear Peltier coefficient, which is difficult to be measured in a usual setup of experiments, only from electric current measu…
Models of nonequilibrium quantum transport underpin all modern electronic devices, from the largest scales to the smallest. Past simplifications such as coarse graining and bulk self-averaging served well to understand electronic materials. Such particular notions become inapplicable at mesoscopic dimensions, edging towards the truly quantum regime. Nevertheless a unifying thread continues to run through transport physics, animating the design of small-scale electronic technology: microscopic conservation and nonequilibrium dissipation. These fundamentals are inherent in quantum transport and …
Mesoscopic systems -- small electric circuits working in quantum regime -- offer us a unique experimental stage to explorer quantum transport in a tunable and precise way. The purpose of this Review is to show how they can contribute to statistical physics. We introduce the significance of fluctuation, or equivalently noise, as noise measurement enables us to address the fundamental aspects of a physical system. The significance of the fluctuation theorem (FT) in statistical physics is noted. We explain what information can be deduced from the current noise measurement in mesoscopic systems. A…
We present a formulation of a nonequilibrium Green's function method for thermal current in nanojunction atomic systems with nonlinear interactions. This first-principle approach is applied to the calculation of the thermal conductance in carbon nanotube junctions. It is shown that nonlinearity already becomes important at low temperatures. Nonlinear interactions greatly suppress phonon transmission at room temperature. The peak of thermal conductance is found to be around 400K, in good agreement with experiments. High-order phonon scattering processes are important for diffusive heat transpor…
The electronic states of a mesoscopic ring are assessed in the presence of Rashba Spin Orbit coupling and a $U(1)$ gauge field. Spin symmetric coupling to an ideal lead is implemented following Büttiker's voltage probe. The exact density of states is derived using the reservoir uncoupled eigenstates as basis functions mixed by the reservoir coupling. The decay time of uncoupled electron eigenstates is derived by fitting the broadening profiles. The spin and charge persistent currents are computed in the presence of the SO interaction and the reservoir coupling for two distinct scenarios of the…
Nanotechnology has not only provided us the possibility of developing quantum machines but also noncanonical power sources able to drive them. Here we focus on studying the performance of quantum machines driven by arbitrary combinations of equilibrium reservoirs and a form of engineered reservoirs consisting of noninteracting particles but whose distribution functions are nonthermal. We provide the expressions for calculating the maximum efficiency of those machines without needing any knowledge of how the nonequilibrium reservoirs were actually made. The formulas require the calculation of a…
We show that a current-carrying coherent electron conductor can be treated as effective bosonic energy reservoir involving different types of electron-hole pair excitation. For weak electron-boson coupling, hybrid energy transport between nonequilibrium electrons and bosons can be described by a Landauer-like formula. This allows for unified account of a variety of heat transport problems in hybrid electron-boson systems. As applications, we study the non-reciprocal heat transport between electrons and bosons, thermoelectric current from a cold-spot and electronic cooling of the bosons. Our un…
We clarify the difference between entangled and nonentangled two-reservoir mesoscopic Kondo systems and reveal the reason why theories using the Keldysh formalism, quantum Monte Carlo calculations, and the renormalization group approaches cannot explain the line shapes of tunneling conductance of mesoscopic Kondo systems measured by using a two-terminal setup but explain those of a three-terminal setup. We emphasize that the previous theories study a nonentangled system, while real two-reservoir mesoscopic Kondo systems are entangled systems in which two reservoirs are within the coherent regi…
We study nonequilibrium generation of spin-dependent transport through a single-level quantum dot embedded in a ring with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We consider nonmagnetic systems, involving no magnetic field nor ferromagnetic leads. It is theoretically predicted that large spin-dependent current occurs as a combined effect of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, the Kondo effect, and nonequilibrium effect, without using magnetic field or material. The phenomenon is viewed as a new nonequilibrium correlation effect that disappears when either interaction or finite bias is absent. We show h…
The distinctive quasiparticle distribution existing under nonequilibrium in a superconductor-insulator-normal metal-insulator-superconductor (SINIS) mesoscopic line is proposed as a novel tool to control the supercurrent intensity in a long Josephson weak link. We present a description of this system in the framework of the diffusive-limit quasiclassical Green-function theory and take into account the effects of inelastic scattering with arbitrary strength. Supercurrent enhancement and suppression, including a marked transition to a $π$-junction are striking features leading to a fully tunable…
We investigate a multiterminal mesoscopic conductor in the quantum Hall regime, subject to temperature and voltage biases. The device can be considered as a nonequilibrium resource acting on a working substance. We previously showed that cooling and power production can occur in the absence of energy and particle currents from a nonequilibrium resource (calling this an N-demon). Here we allow energy or particle currents from the nonequilibrium resource and find that the device seemingly operates at a better efficiency than a Carnot engine. To overcome this problem, we define free-energy effici…
Microwave irradiation of Nb-InAs-Nb junctions reveals frequency-doubled Josephson currents which persist to high temperatures, in the absence of a critical current. A nonequilibrium dynamical model, based on time-dependent Andreev bound states, successfully accounts for the resulting half-integer Shapiro step and an enhancement in the conductance near zero bias.
With the rapidly increasing integration density and power density in nanoscale electronic devices, the thermal management concerning heat generation and energy harvesting becomes quite crucial. Since phonon is the major heat carrier in semiconductors, thermal transport due to phonons in mesoscopic systems has attracted much attention. In quantum transport studies, the nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method is a versatile and powerful tool that has been developed for several decades. In this review, we will discuss theoretical investigations of thermal transport using the NEGF approach f…
Using the path integral approach to equilibrium statistical physics the effect of dissipation on Landau diamagnetism is calculated. The calculation clarifies the essential role of the boundary of the container in which the electrons move. Further, the derived result for diamagnetization also matches with the expression obtained from a time-dependent quantum Langevin equation in the asymptotic limit, provided a certain order is maintained in taking limits. This identification then unifies equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical physics for a phenomenon like diamagnetism, which is inherently …
The pursuit of the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) in various physical systems is of great research interest. Compared with recent progress in non-electronic systems, the implementation of the NHSE in condensed matter physics remains elusive. Here, we show that the NHSE can be engineered in the mesoscopic heterojunctions (system plus reservoir) in which electrons in two channels of the system moving towards each other have asymmetric coupling to those of the reservoir. This makes electrons in the system moving forward and in the opposite direction have unequal lifetimes, and so gives rise to …
We investigate the 1/f noise properties of epitaxial graphene devices at low temperatures as a function of temperature, current and magnetic flux density. At low currents, an exponential decay of the 1/f noise power spectral density with increasing temperature is observed that indicates mesoscopic conductance fluctuations as the origin of 1/f noise at temperatures below 50 K. At higher currents, deviations from the typical quadratic current dependence and the exponential temperature dependence occur as a result of nonequilibrium conditions due to current heating. By applying the theory of Kuba…
Rapid development of micro- and nanofabrication methods have provoked interest and enabled experimental studies of electronic properties of a vast class of (sub)micrometer-size solid state systems. Mesoscopic-size hybrid structures, containing superconducting elements, have become interesting objects for basic research studies and various applications, ranging from medical and astrophysical sensors to quantum computing. One of the most important aspects of physics, governing the behavior of such systems, is the finite concentration of nonequilibrium quasiparticles, present in a superconductor …
Resonant electron transport through a mesoscopic region (quantum dot or single molecule) with electron-phonon interaction is considered at finite voltage. In this case the standard Landauer-Büttiker approach cannot be applied. Using the nonequilibrium Green function method we show that due to a nonequilibrium distribution function of electrons in the mesoscopic region, the inelastic scattering rate and spectral function of the dot become functions of the voltage and have to be calculated self-consistently.
In order to specify a nonequilibrium steady state of a quantum wire (QWR), one must connect reservoirs to it. Since reservoirs should be large 2d or 3d systems, the total system is a large and inhomogeneous 2d or 3d system, in which e-e interactions have the same strength in all regions. However, most theories of interacting electrons in QWR considered simplified 1d models, in which reservoirs are absent or replaced with noninteracting 1d leads. We first discuss fundamental problems of such theories in view of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. We then present formulations which are free fr…
We show that the density matrix for a finite conductor attached to reservoirs obtained by Keldysh formalism is of MacLennan-Zubarev form. On the basis of the fact that the density matrix is the invariant part proposed by Zubarev, it is shown that Keldysh formalism may describe the irreversible processes and steady-state feature of the system. An important consequence of the MacLennan-Zubarev form of the density matrix is a generalization of the Kubo formula in a nonequilibrium case. On the basis of the result, we propose the formula of shot noise and a nonequilibrium identity between different…
We present a unified transport theory of hybrid structures, in which a confined normal state ($N$) sample is sandwiched between two leads each of which can be either a ferromagnet ($F$) or a superconductor ($S$) via tunnel barriers. By introducing a four-dimensional Nambu-spinor space, a general current formula is derived within the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function formalism, which can be applied to various kinds of hybrid mesoscopic systems with strong correlations even in the nonequilibrium situation. Such a formula is gauge invariant. We also demonstrate analytically for some quantitie…
Mesoscopic superconducting-normal-metal-superconducting (S-N-S) junctions with a large separation between the superconducting electrodes (i.e. wide junctions) exhibit nonequilibrium supercurrents, even at temperatures for which the equilibrium Josephson effect is exponentially small. The second harmonic of the Josephson frequency dominates these currents, as observed in recent experiments. A simple description of these effects, in the spirit of the Resistively-Shunted-Junction model, is suggested here. It is used to calculate dc I-V characteristics, and to examine the effects of various types …
A solid state electronic nanodevice is an intrinsically open quantum system, exchanging both energy with the host material and carriers with connected reservoirs. Its out-of-equilibrium behavior is determined by a non-trivial interplay between electronic dissipation and decoherence induced by inelastic processes within the device, and the coupling of the latter to metallic electrodes. We propose a unified description, based on the density matrix formalism, that accounts for both these aspects, enabling to predict various steady-state as well as ultrafast nonequilibrium phenomena, nowadays expe…
We use a quantum path integral approach to describe the behavior of a microwave cavity coupled to a dissipative mesoscopic circuit. We integrate out the mesoscopic electronic degrees of freedom to obtain a cavity effective action at fourth order in the light/matter coupling. By studying the structure of this action, we establish sufficient conditions in which the cavity dynamics can be described with a Lindblad equation. This equation depends on effective parameters set by electronic correlation functions. It reveals that the mesoscopic circuit induces an effective Kerr interaction and two-pho…
We studied a mesoscopic cross-like normal metal structure connected to two superconducting (S) and two normal (N) reservoirs. We observed the Josephson effect under unusual conditions when there is no current through one of the two S/N interfaces. The potential difference between the S reservoirs was zero unless the voltage applied between S and N reservoirs exceeded a critical value although the electric potential in the N wire connecting the superconductors varied in a nonmonotonic way. The observed effects are discussed theoretically.
This paper studies the thermal properties of three-terminal mesoscopic dielectric systems in the nonlinear response regime at low temperature. For a symmetric three-terminal system, when the temperature is finitely different between the left and right thermal reservoirs, the temperature of the central thermal reservoir is always higher than the averaging temperature of the others. This nonlinear thermal phenomenon is also observed for asymmetric three-terminal systems. At the end, a model of thermal rectification is presented.
A critical aspect of quantum mechanics is the nonlocal nature of the wavefunction, a characteristic that may yield unexpected coupling of nominally-isolated systems. The capacity to detect this coupling can be vital in many situations, especially those in which its strength is weak. In this work we address this problem in the context of mesoscopic physics, by implementing an electron-wave realization of a Fano interferometer using pairs of coupled quantum point contacts (QPCs). Within this scheme, the discrete level required for a Fano resonance is provided by pinching off one of the QPCs, the…
We suggest a generalisation of the expression of the nonequilibrium density matrix obtained by Hershfield's method for the cases where both heat and charge steady state currents are present in a quantum open system. The finite-size quantum system, connected to two temperature and particle reservoirs, is driven out of equilibrium by the presence of both a temperature gradient and a chemical potential gradient between the two reservoirs. We show that the NE density matrix is given by a generalised Gibbs-like ensemble, and is in full agreement with the general results of the McLennan-Zubarev none…
We study the effects of spin accumulation (inside reservoirs) on electronic transport with tunneling and reflections at the gates of a quantum dot. Within the stub model, the calculation focus on the current-current correlation function for the flux of electrons injected into the quantum dot. The linear response theory used allows to obtain the noise power in the regime of thermal crossover as a function of parameters that reveal the spin polarization at the reservoirs. The calculation is performed employing diagrammatic integration within the universal groups (ensembles of Dyson) for a non-id…
We present a new class of fluctuation relations, to which we will refer as Fluctuation Relations for Current Components (FRCCs). FRCCs can be used to estimate system parameters when complete information about nonequilibrium many-body electron interactions is unavailable. We show that FRCCs are often robust in the sense that they do not depend on some basic types of electron interactions and some quantum coherence effects.
With this work we investigate the stationary nonequilibrium density matrix of current carrying nonequilibrium steady states of in-between quantum systems that are connected to reservoirs. We describe the analytical procedure to obtain the explicit result for the reduced density matrix of quantum transport when the system, the connecting reservoirs and, as well, the system-reservoir interactions are described by quadratic Hamiltonians. Our procedure is detailed for both, electronic transport described by the tight-binding Hamiltonian and for phonon transport described by harmonic Hamiltonians. …
We consider a mesoscopic normal metal, where the spin degeneracy is lifted by a ferromagnetic exchange field or Zeeman splitting, coupled to two superconducting reservoirs. As a function of the exchange field or the distance between the reservoirs, the supercurrent through this device oscillates with an exponentially decreasing envelope. This phenomenon is similar to the tuning of a supercurrent by a non-equilibrium quasiparticle distribution between two voltage-biased reservoirs. We propose a device combining the exchange field and non-equilibrium effects, which allows us to observe a range o…
A new class of topological mesoscopic phenomena in absence of external magnetic field (meso-nucleo-spinics)is predicted, which is based on combined action of the nonequilibrium nuclear spin population and charge carriers spin-orbit interaction . As an example, we show that Aharonov-Bohm like oscillations of the persistent current in GaAs/AlGaAs based mesoscopic rings may exist, in the absence of the external magnetic field, provided that a topologically nontrivial strongly nonequilibrium nuclear spin population is created. This phenomenon is due to the breaking, via the spin-orbit coupling, of…
Recently we have developed a theory of Keldysh formalism for mesoscopic systems. The resulting nonequilibrium Kubo formula for differential conductance makes it possible to propose the new formula of shot noise $S_h$, and thus to study shot noise in correlated systems at any temperature and any bias voltage. Employing this new approach, we analyze shot noise in the Kondo regime through a quantum dot for the symmetric case at zero temperature. Using the renormalized perturbation theory, we prove that in the leading order of bias voltage $S_h$ equal to noise power at zero temperature conventiona…
We propose a nonequilibrium version of functional renormalization within the Keldysh formalism by introducing a complex valued flow parameter in the Fermi or Bose functions of each reservoir. Our cutoff scheme provides a unified approach to equilibrium and nonequilibrium situations. We apply it to nonequilibrium transport through an interacting quantum wire coupled to two reservoirs and show that the nonequilibrium occupation induces new power law exponents for the conductance.
We study theoretically some symmetry properties of spin currents and spin polarizations in multi-terminal mesoscopic spin-orbit coupled systems. Based on a scattering wave function approach, we show rigorously that in the equilibrium state no finite spin polarizations can exist in a multi-terminal mesoscopic spin-orbit coupled system (both in the leads and in the spin-orbit coupled region) and also no finite equilibrium terminal spin currents can exist. By use of a typical two-terminal mesoscopic spin-orbit coupled system as the example, we show explicitly that the nonequilibrium terminal spin…
Results on heat current, entropy production rate and entanglement are reported for a quantum system coupled to two different temperature heat reservoirs. By applying a temperature gradient, different quantum states can be found with exactly the same amount of entanglement but different purity degrees and heat currents. Furthermore, a nonequilibrium enhancement-suppression transition behavior of the entanglement is identified.
We investigate the persistent current in a hybrid Aharonov-Bohm ring - quantum dot system coupled to a reservoir which provides spin fluctuations. It is shown that the spin exchange interaction between the quantum dot and the reservoir induces dephasing in the absence of direct charge transfer. We demonstrate an anomalous nature of this spin-fluctuation induced dephasing which tends to enhance the persistent current. We explain our result in terms of the separation of the spin from the charge degree of freedom. The nature of the spin fluctuation induced dephasing is analyzed in detail.
We report the results of several nonequilibrium experiments performed on superconducting/normal/superconducting (S/N/S) Josephson junctions containing either one or two extra terminals that connect to normal reservoirs. Currents injected into the junctions from the normal reservoirs induce changes in the electron energy distribution function, which can change the properties of the junction. A simple experiment performed on a 3-terminal sample demonstrates that quasiparticle current and supercurrent can coexist in the normal region of the S/N/S junction. When larger voltages are applied to the …
We develop a theory of far from the equilibrium transport in arrays of tunnel junctions. We find that if the rate of the electron-electron interactions exceeds the rate of the electron-phonon energy exchange, the energy relaxation ensuring the charge transfer may occur sequentially. In particular, cotunneling transport in arrays of junctions is dominated by the relaxation via the intermediate bosonic environment, the electron-hole excitations, rather than by the electron-phonon mechanism. The current-voltage characteristics are highly sensitive to the spectrum of the environmental modes and to…
We investigate the amplitude of mesoscopic fluctuations of the differential conductance of a metallic wire at arbitrary bias voltage V. For non-interacting electrons, the variance <delta g^2> increases with V. The asymptotic large-V behavior is <delta g^2> \sim V/V_c (where eV_c=D/L^2 is the Thouless energy), in agreement with the earlier prediction by Larkin and Khmelnitskii. We find, however, that this asymptotics has a very small numerical prefactor and sets in at very large V/V_c only, which strongly complicates its experimental observation. This high-voltage behavior is preceded by a cros…
We analyze the broad range of spin-dependent nonequilibrium transport properties of hybrid systems composed of a normal region tunnel coupled to two superconductors with exchange fields induced by the proximity to thin ferromagnetic layers and highlight its functionalities. By calculating the quasiparticle distribution functions in the normal region we find that they are spin-dependent and strongly sensitive to the relative angle between exchange fields in the two superconductors. The impact of inelastic collisions on their properties is addressed. As a result, the electric current flowing thr…
We calculate the frequency-dependent equilibrium noise of a mesoscopic capacitor in time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The capacitor is modeled as a single-level quantum dot with on-site Coulomb interaction and tunnel coupling to a nearby reservoir. The noise spectra are derived from linear-response conductances via the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Thereby, we analyze the performance of a recently derived exchange-correlation potential with time-nonlocal density dependence in the finite-frequency linear-response regime. We compare our TDDFT noise spectra with real-time pertu…
We theoretically study nonequilibrium spin transport in a superconducting wire connected by tunnel junctions to two ferromagnetic metal wires, each of which serves as an injector or detector of spin-polarized electron current. We present a set of Boltzmann equations to determine nonequilibrium quasiparticle distributions in this system, and obtain an analytical expression for the nonlocal spin signal in the case of small injection current. It is shown that the quasiparticle distribution in the ferromagnetic metal for detection strongly affects the magnitude of the spin signal. At low temperatu…
We present a novel hierarchical quantum master equation (HQME) approach which provides a numerically exact description of nonequilibrium charge transport in nanosystems with electronic-vibrational coupling. In contrast to previous work [Phys. Rev. B $\bf{94}$, 201407 (2016)], the active vibrational degrees of freedom are treated in the reservoir subspace and are integrated out. This facilitates applications to systems with very high excitation levels, for example due to current-induced heating, while properties of the vibrational degrees of freedom, such as the excitation level and other momen…
We propose an alternative derivation for the dynamic admittance of a gated quantum dot connected by a single-channel lead to an electron reservoir. Our derivation, which reproduces the result of Prêtre, Thomas, and Büttiker for the universal charge-relaxation resistance, shows that at low frequencies, the current leaving the dot lags after the entering one by the Wigner-Smith delay time. We compute the capacitance when interactions are taken into account only on the dot within the Hartree-Fock approximation and study the Coulomb-blockade oscillations as a function of the Fermi energy in the re…
We calculate the probability distribution of the local density of states $ν$ in a disordered one-dimensional conductor or single-mode waveguide, attached at one end to an electron or photon reservoir. We show that this distribution does not display a log-normal tail for small $ν$, but diverges instead $\proptoν^{-1/2}$. The log-normal tail appears if $ν$ is averaged over rapid oscillations on the scale of the wavelength. There is no such qualitative distinction between microscopic and mesoscopic densities of states if the levels are broadened by inelastic scattering or absorption, rather than …
We study a generic problem of dissipative quantum mechanics, a small local quantum system with discrete states coupled in an arbitrary way (i.e. not necessarily linear) to several infinitely large particle or heat reservoirs. For both bosonic or fermionic reservoirs we develop a quantum field-theoretical diagrammatic formulation in Liouville space by expanding systematically in the reservoir-system coupling and integrating out the reservoir degrees of freedom. As a result we obtain a kinetic equation for the reduced density matrix of the quantum system. Based on this formalism, we present a fo…
We analysed the electron-hole or, in another words, branch imbalance (BI) and the related electric potential $V_{imb}$ which may arise in a mesoscopic superconductor/normal metal (S/N) structure under non-equilibrium conditions in the presence of a supercurrent. Non-equilibrium conditions can be created in different ways: a) a quasiparticle current flowing between the N reservoirs; b) a temperature gradient between the N reservoirs and no quasiparticle current. It is shown that the voltage $V_{imb}$ oscillates with the phase difference $ϕ$. In a cross-geometry structure the voltage $V_{imb}$ a…
Tunnelling conductances observed for mesoscopic Kondo systems exhibit a zero-bias peak and two coherent side peaks. The former peak is usually understood as a Kondo effect and the latter side peak is recently clarified as the effect of inter-reservoir coherence. However, fitting the experimental $dI/dV$ line shapes, where $I$ and $V$ denote the current and bias voltage, respectively, has not been performed theoretically. Here, we fit the entire line shape range of the tunnelling conductance observed for a quantum dot, quantum point contact, and magnetized atom adsorbed on an insulating layer c…
The mesoscopic Stoner instability is an intriguing manifestation of symmetry breaking in isolated metallic quantum dots, underlined by the competition between single-particle energy and Heisenberg exchange interaction. Here we study this phenomenon in the presence of tunnel coupling to a reservoir. We analyze the spin susceptibility of electrons on the quantum dot for different values of couplings and temperature. Our results indicate the existence of a quantum phase transition at a critical value of the tunneling coupling, which is determined by the Stoner-enhanced exchange interaction. This …
The nonequilibrium tunnelling center model of a localized electronic level coupled to a fluctuating two-state system and to two electronic reservoirs, is solved via an Anderson-Yuval-Hamann mapping onto a plasma of alternating positive and negative charges time-ordered along the two "Keldysh" contours needed to describe nonequilibrium physics. The interaction between charges depends both on whether their time separation is small or large compared to a dephasing scale defined in terms of the chemical potential difference between the electronic reservoirs and on whether their time separation is …
