We report the results of several nonequilibrium experiments performed on superconducting/normal/superconducting (S/N/S) Josephson junctions containing either one or two extra terminals that connect to normal reservoirs. Currents injected into the junctions from the normal reservoirs induce changes in the electron energy distribution function, which can change the properties of the junction. A simple experiment performed on a 3-terminal sample demonstrates that quasiparticle current and supercurrent can coexist in the normal region of the S/N/S junction. When larger voltages are applied to the normal reservoir, the sign of the current-phase relation of the junction can be reversed, creating a "$π$-junction." We compare quantitatively the maximum critical currents obtained in 4-terminal $π$-junctions when the voltages on the normal reservoirs have the same or opposite sign with respect to the superconductors. We discuss the challenges involved in creating a "Zeeman" $π$-junction with a parallel applied magnetic field and show in detail how the orbital effect suppresses the critical current. Finally, when normal current and supercurrent are simultaneously present in the junction, the distribution function develops a spatially inhomogeneous component that can be interpreted as an effective temperature gradient across the junction, with a sign that is controllable by the supercurrent. Taken as a whole, these experiments illustrate the richness and complexity of S/N/S Josephson junctions in nonequilibrium situations.
Imperfections change essentially the electronic transport properties of graphene. Motivated by a recent experiment reporting on the possible application of graphene as junctions, we study transport properties in graphene-based junctions with single localized defect. We solve the Dirac-Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equation with a single localized defect superconductor-normal(graphene)-superconductor (SNS) junction. We consider the properties of tunneling conductance and Josephson current through an undoped strip of graphene with heavily doped s-wave superconducting electrodes in the dirty limit. We fin…
We investigate the current-phase-relation (CPR) of long diffusive superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions in thermodynamic equilibrium and under microwave irradiation. While in equilibrium good agreement with the predictions of quasi-classical theory is found, we observe that the shape of the CPR can be strongly affected by microwave irradiation. Close to a Josephson-phase difference of pi, the supercurrent can be strongly suppressed when increasing the rf-power. Our results can be understood in terms of microwave excitation of low-lying Andreev bound states across…
The effect of a magnetic field on Josephson current has been studied for a superconductor/normal-metal/superconductor (SNS) system, where N is a two-dimensional electron gas in a confining potential. It is found that the dependence of Josephson currents on the magnetic field are sensitive to the width of the normal metal. If the normal metal is wide and contains many channels (subbands), the current on a weak magnetic field shows a dependence similar to a Fraunhofer-pattern in SIS system and, as the field gets strong, it shows another type of oscillatory dependence on the field resulting from …
We discuss the dependence of the Josephson current correlations in mesoscopic superconductor/normal-conductor/superconductor (SNS) devices on the transparency of the superconductor/normal-conductor (SN) interfaces. Focusing on short junctions we apply the supersymmetry method to construct an effective field theory for mesoscopic SNS devices which is evaluated in the limit of highly and weakly transparent interfaces. We show that the two-point Josephson-current correlator differs by an universal factor 2 in these two cases.
We present an analysis of the symmetries of the interference pattern of critical currents through a two-dimensional superconductor-semiconductor-superconductor junction, taking into account Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction, an arbitrarily oriented magnetic field, disorder, and structural asymmetries. We relate the symmetries of the pattern to the absence or presence of symmetries in the Hamiltonian, which provides a qualitative connection between easily measurable quantities and the spin-orbit coupling and other symmetries of the junction. We support our analysis with numerical ca…
In a mesoscopic superconductor - normal metal - superconductor (SNS) heterostructure the quasiparticle distribution can be driven far from equilibrium by a voltage applied across the normal metal. This reduces the supercurrent between the superconducting electrodes, which creates the possibility to use these SNS junctions as fast switches and transistors. We describe the system in the framework of the quasiclassical theory and find good agreement with recent experiments. We propose further experimental tests, for instance the voltage-dependence of the current-phase-relation, which includes a t…
Using tunneling spectroscopy, we have measured the local electron energy distribution function in the normal part of a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction containing an extra lead to a normal reservoir. In the presence of simultaneous supercurrent and injected quasiparticle current, the distribution function exhibits a sharp feature at very low energy. The feature is odd in energy, and odd under reversal of either the supercurrent or the quasiparticle current direction. The feature represents an effective temperature gradient across the SNS Josephson junction th…
We have generalized the scattering-matrix theory of multiple Andreev reflections in mesoscopic Josephson junctions to the multi-mode case, and applied it to short superconductor/normal metal/superconductor junctions with diffusive electron transport. Both the dc and ac current-voltage characteristics are analyzed for a wide range of bias voltages $V$. For voltages smaller than the supeconducting gap the dc differential conductance of the junction diverges as $1/\sqrt{V}$.
We calculate the Josephson current density j(phi) for a Weyl superconductor--normal-metal--superconductor junction for which the outer terminals are superconducting Weyl metals and the normal layer is a Weyl (semi)metal. We describe the Weyl (semi)metal using a simple model with two Weyl points. The model has broken time-reveresal symmetry, but inversion symmetry is present. We calculate the Josephson current for both zero and finite temperature for the two pairing mechanisms inside the superconductors that have been proposed in the literature, zero-momentum BCS-like pairing and finite-momentu…
We report a systematic experimental study of mesoscopic conductance fluctuations in superconductor/normal/superconductor (SNS) devices Nb/InAs-nanowire/Nb. These fluctuations far exceed their value in the normal state and strongly depend on temperature even in the low-temperature regime. This dependence is attributed to high sensitivity of perfectly conducting channels to dephasing and the SNS fluctuations thus provide a sensitive probe of dephasing in a regime where normal transport fails to detect it. Further, the conductance fluctuations are strongly non-linear in bias voltage and reveal su…
We use a tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) formalism to self-consistently calculate the proximity effect, Josephson current, and local density of states in ballistic graphene SNS Josephson junctions. Both short and long junctions, with respect to the superconducting coherence length, are considered, as well as different doping levels of the graphene. We show that self-consistency does not notably change the current-phase relationship derived earlier for short junctions using the non-selfconsistent Dirac-BdG formalism but predict a significantly increased critical current with a stronger…
We discuss the Josephson current in superconductor / dirty normal conductor / superconductor junctions, where the superconductors have $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing symmetry. The low-temperature behavior of the Josephson current depends on the orientation angle between the crystalline axis and the normal of the junction interface. We show that the ensemble-averaged Josephson current vanishes when the orientation angle is $π/4$ and the normal conductor is in the diffusive transport regime. The $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing symmetry is responsible for this fact.
We consider DC supercurrents in SNS junctions. Spin-orbit coupling in combination with Zeeman fields can induce an effective vector potential in the normal conductor. As a consequence, an out-of-plane spin-density varying along the transverse direction causes a longitudinal phase difference between the superconducting terminals. The resulting equilibrium phase coherent supercurrent is analogue to the non-equilibrium inverse spin Hall effect in normal conductors. We explicitly compute the effect for the Rashba spin orbit coupling in a disordered two-dimensional electron gas with an inhomogeneou…
Hall effect in SN and SNS junctions is considered. It is shown that at small temperature the Hall voltage is significantly suppressed as compared to its normal metal value. The time dependence of the Hall voltage in SNS junctions has a form of narrow pulses with the Josephson frequency.
Quasiclassical theory predicts an existence of a sharp energy gap E_g \sim D/L^2 in the excitation spectrum of a long diffusive superconductor--normal metal--superconductor (SNS) junction. We show that mesoscopic fluctuations remove the sharp edge of the spectrum, leading to a nonzero DoS for all energies. Physically, this effect originates from the quasi-localized states in the normal metal. Technically, we use an extension of Efetov's supermatrix sigma-model for mixed NS systems. We demonstrate the equivalence of the supersymmetric saddle-point solution to the standard quasiclassical Usadel …
Periodic in time spin-Hall current and spin polarization induced by a dc electric bias has been calculated in a superconductor-normal 2DEG-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction. We assumed that the band energies of electrons in the normal system are splitted due to Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The transport parameters have been calculated within the diffusion approximation and using perturbation expansion over a small SN contact transparency. We found out that in contrast to the stationary Josephson effect, the spin-Hall current does not turn to zero. Besides a direct proximity effect caused …
Low temperature transport measurements on superconducting film - normal metal wire - superconducting film (SNS) junctions fabricated on the basis of 6 nm thick superconducting polycrystalline PtSi films are reported. The structures with the normal metal wires of two different lengths L=1.5 $μ$m and L=6$μ$m and the same widths W=0.3$μ$m are studied. Zero bias resistance dip related to pair current proximity effect is observed for all junctions whereas the subharmonic energy gap structure originating from phase coherent multiple Andreev reflections have occurs only in the SNS junctions with shor…
Current noise is measured with a SQUID in low impedance and transparent Nb-Al-Nb j unctions of length comparable to the phase breaking length and much longer than the thermal length. The shot noise amplitude is compared with theoretical predictions of doubled shot noise in diffusive normal/superconductor (NS) junctions due to the Andreev reflections. We discuss the heat dissipation away from the normal part through the NS interfaces. A weak applied magnetic field reduces the amplitude of the 1/f noise by a factor of two, showing that even far from equilibrium the sample is in the mesoscopic re…
Semiclassical theory of proximity effect predicts a gap E_g \sim hD/L^2 in the excitation spectrum of a long diffusive SNS junction. Mesoscopic fluctuations lead to anomalously localized states in the normal part of the junction. As a result, a non-zero, yet exponentially small, density of states appears at energies below E_g. In the framework of the supermatrix nonlinear sigma-model these prelocalized states are due to instanton configurations with broken supersymmetry. The exact result for the DOS near the semiclassical threshold is found provided the dimensionless conductance of the normal …
We investigate the Josephson effcet in superconductor-normal-superconductor junction (SNS) base on the doped unbiased silicene under the perpendicular electric field and off-resonance circularly polarized light. The Andreev reflection (including the retroreflection and specular one) during the subgap transport, the free energy, and the reversal of the Josephson effect as well as the emergence of $ϕ_{0}$-junction are exploited. The Andreev reflection is complete in the NS interface even for the clean interface and without the Fermi wave vector mismatch, which is opposite to the case of ferromag…
Current noise in superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junctions is calculated within the scattering theory of multiple Andreev reflections (MAR). It is shown that the noise exhibits subharmonic gap singularities at $eV=2Δ/n$, $n=1,2,... $ both in single-mode junctions with arbitrary transparency $D$ and in multi-mode disordered junctions. The subharmonic structure is superimposed with monotonic increase of the effective transferred charge $q^*=S_I(0)/2I$ with decreasing bias voltage. Other features of the noise include a step-like increase of $q^*$ in junctions with small $D$, and …
We study the Josephson current through a ballistic normal metal layer of thickness $D$ on which two superconducting electrodes are deposited within a distance $L$ of each other. In the presence of an ({\it in-layer}) magnetic field we find that the oscillations of the critical current $I_c(Φ)$ with the magnetic flux $Φ$ are significantly different from an ordinary magnetic interference pattern. Depending on the ratio $L/D$ and temperature, $I_c(Φ)$-oscillations can have a period smaller than flux quantum $Φ_0$, nonzero minima and damping rate much smaller than $1/Φ$. Similar anomalous magnetic…
We study superconducting-normal-superconducting (SNS) Josephson junctions in one-dimensional topological superconductors which support more than one Majorana end mode. The variation of the energy spectrum with the superconducting phase is investigated by combining numerical diagonalizations of tight-binding models describing the SNS junction together with an analysis of appropriate low-energy effective Hamiltonians. We show that the four pi-periodicity characteristic of the fractional dc Josephson effect is preserved. Additionally, the ideal conductance of a NS junction with a topological supr…
We investigate ac Josephson effect in the resonant tunneling through mesoscopic superconducting junctions. In the presence of microwave irradiation, we show that the trajectory of multiple Andreev reflections can be closed by emitting or absorbing photons. Consequently, photon-assisted Andreev states are formed and play the role of carrying supercurrent. On the Shapiro steps, dc component appears when the resonant level is near a series of positions with spacing of half of the microwave frequency. Analytical result is derived in the limit of infinite superconducting gap, based on which new fea…
The Josephson Effect and Superconducting Proximity Effect were observed in Superconductor -Graphene-Superconductor (SGS) Josephson junctions with coherence lengths comparable to the distance between the superconducting leads. By comparing the measured temperature and doping dependence of the supercurrent and the proximity induced sub-gap features (multiple Andreev reflections) to theoretical predictions we find that, contrary to expectations, the ballistic transport model fails to describe the SGS junctions. In contrast, the diffusive junction model yields close quantitative agreement with the…
We theoretically study the stability of more than one Majorana Fermion appearing in a $p$-wave superconductor/dirty normal metal/$p$-wave superconductor junction in two-dimension by using chiral symmetry of Hamiltonian. At the phase difference across the junction $φ$ being $π$, we will show that all of the Majorana bound states in the normal metal belong to the same chirality. Due to this pure chiral feature, the Majorana bound states retain their high degree of degeneracy at the zero energy even in the presence of random potential. As a consequence, the resonant transmission of a Cooper pair …
We study non-equilibrium Josephson effect and phase-dependent conductance in three-terminal diffusive interferometers with short arms. We consider strong proximity effect and investigate an interplay of dissipative and Josephson currents co-existing within the same proximity region. In junctions with transparent interfaces, the suppression of the Josephson current appears at rather large voltage, $eV\sim Δ$, and the current vanishes at $eV\geqΔ$. Josephson current inversion becomes possible in junctions with resistive interfaces, where the inversion occurs within a finite interval of the appli…
We study theoretically the electronic entropy and specific heat in diffusive superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions. In particular, we consider the influence of non-idealities occurring in an actual experiment, such as the presence of barriers at the NS interfaces, the spin-flip and inelastic scattering in the N region and quasiparticle subgap states in the superconductors. We find that spin-flip and inelastic scattering do not have, for typical parameters values, a large effect. On the contrary, the presence of barriers suppresses the superconducting correlations…
We determine the quasi-particle excitation spectrum in the normal region of a narrow ballistic superconductor--normal-metal--superconductor (SNS) Josephson contact. Increasing the effective chemical potential in the contact converts the electronic levels into Andreev-levels carrying supercurrent. The opening of these superchannels leads to a supercurrent quantization which exhibits a non-universal behavior in general and we discuss its dependence on the junction parameters.
We study a circuit where a mesoscopic Josephson junction (JJ) is embedded in an environment consisting of a large bias resistor and a normal metal - superconductor tunnel junction (NIS). The effective Coulomb blockade of the JJ can be controlled by the tunneling current through the NIS junction leading to transistor-like characteristics. We show using phase correlation theory and numerical simulations that substantial current gain with low current noise ($i_{n}\lesssim 1$ fA/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$) and noise temperature ($\lesssim $ 0.1 K) can be achieved. Good agreement between our numerical simu…
We calculate the Josephson coupling energy $U_J(ϕ)$ (related to the supercurrent $I=(2e/\hbar) dU_J/dϕ$) for a disordered normal metal between two superconductors with a phase difference $ϕ$. We demonstrate that the symmetry of the scattering matrix of non-interacting quasiparticles in zero magnetic field implies that $U_J(ϕ)$ has a minimum at $ϕ=0$. A maximum (that would lead to a $π$-junction or negative superfluid density) is excluded for any realization of the disorder.
We have measured the critical current dependence on the magnetic flux of two long SNS junctions differing by the normal wire geometry. The samples are made by a Au wire connected to W contacts, via Focused Ion Beam assisted deposition. We could tune the magnetic pattern from the monotonic gaussian-like decay of a quasi 1D normal wire to the Fraunhofer-like pattern of a square normal wire. We explain the monotonic limit with a semiclassical 1D model, and we fit both field dependences with numerical simulations of the 2D Usadel equation. Furthermore, we observe both integer and fractional Shapir…
Superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) that incorporate two superconductor/insulator/superconductor (SIS) Josephson junctions in a closed loop form the core of some of the most sensitive detectors of magnetic and electric fields currently available. SQUIDs in these applications are typically operated with a finite voltage which generates microwave radiation through the ac Josephson effect. This radiation may impact the system being measured. We describe here a SQUID in which the Josephson junctions are formed from strips of normal metal (N) in good electrical contact with the su…
$ $The critical current of a Josephson junction is an oscillatory function of the enclosed magnetic flux $Φ$, because of quantum interference modulated with periodicity $h/2e$. We calculate these Fraunhofer oscillations in a two-dimensional (2D) ballistic superconductor--normal-metal--superconductor (SNS) junction. For a Fermi circle the amplitude of the oscillations decays as $1/Φ$ or faster. If the Fermi circle is strongly warped, as it is on a square lattice near the band center, we find that the amplitude decays slower $\propto 1/\sqrtΦ$ when the magnetic length $l_m=\sqrt{\hbar/eB}$ drops…
We show that in {\em ballistic} mesoscopic SNS junctions the period of critical current vs. magnetic flux dependence (magnetic interference pattern), $I_c(Φ)$, changes {\em continuously and non-monotonically} from $Φ_0$ to $2Φ_0$ as the length-to-width ratio of the junction grows, or temperature drops. In {\em diffusive} mesoscopic junctions the change is even more drastic, with the first zero of $I_c(Φ)$ appearing at $3Φ_0$. The effect is a manifestation of nonlocal relation between the supercurrent density and superfluid velocity in the normal part of the system, with the characteristic scal…
Starting from a quantum two-mode Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian we determine the ground state properties, momentum distribution and dynamical evolution for a Bose Josephson junction realized by an ultracold Bose gas in a double-well trap. Varying the well asymmetry we identify Mott-like regions of parameters where number fluctuations are suppressed and the interference fringes in the momentum distribution are strongly reduced. We also show how Schroedinger cat states, realized from an initially phase coherent state by a sudden rise of the barrier among the two wells, will give rise to a destructive …
By measuring the Josephson emission of a diffusive Superconductor-Normal metal-Superconductor (SNS) junction at a finite temperature we reveal a non-trivial sensitivity of the supercurrent to microwave irradiation. We demonstrate that the harmonic content of the current-phase relation is modified due to the energy redistribution of quasiparticles in the normal wire induced by the electromagnetic field. The distortion originates from the phase-dependent out-of-equilibrium distribution function which is strongly affected by the ac-response of the spectral supercurrent. For phases close to $π$, t…
Using the self-consistent tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism we have studied the effect of nearest neighbor spin-singlet bond (SB) correlations on Josephson coupling and proximity effect in graphene SNS Josephson junctions with conventional s-wave superconducting contacts. Despite the s-wave superconducting state in the contacts, the SB pairing state inside the junction has d-wave symmetry and clean, sharp interface junctions resemble a 'bulk-meets-bulk' situation with very little interaction between the two different superconducting states. In fact, due to a finite-size suppression …
Superconductor-semiconductor nanowire hybrid structures are useful in fabricating devices for quantum information processing. While selective area growth (SAG) offers the flexibility to grow semiconductor nanowires in arbitrary geometries, in-situ evaporation of superconductors ensures pristine superconductor-semiconductor interfaces, resulting in strong induced superconductivity in the semiconducting nanowire. In this work, we evaporated islands of superconductor tin on InAs SAG nanowires, by using in-situ shadowing with high aspect-ratio pre-fabricated SiOx dielectric walls. Our technique al…
A theory is offered for the ballistic 4-terminal Josephson junction. The studied system consists of a mesoscopic two-dimensional normal rectangular layer which is attached in each side to the bulk superconducting banks (terminals). The relation between the currents through the different terminals, which is valid for arbitrary temperatures and junction sizes, is obtained. The nonlocal coupling of the supercurrents leads to a new effect, specific for the mesoscopic weak link between two superconducting rings; an applied magnetic flux through one of the rings produces a magnetic flux in the other…
We carry out an extensive experimental and theoretical study of the Josephson effect in S-N-S junctions made of a diffusive normal metal (N) embedded between two superconducting electrodes (S). Our experiments are performed on Nb-Cu-Nb junctions with highly-transparent interfaces. We give the predictions of the quasiclassical theory in various regimes on a precise and quantitative level. We describe the crossover between the short and the long junction regimes and provide the temperature dependence of the critical current using dimensionless units $eR_{N}I_{c}/ε_{c}$ and $k_{B}T/ε_{c}$ where $…
We have studied the critical current of a diffusive superconductor - normal metal - superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction as a function of the electron energy distribution in the normal region. This was realized in a 4 terminal device, in which a mesoscopic gold wire between two electron reservoirs is coupled in its center to two superconducting electrodes. By varying the length of the wire and applying a voltage over it we are able to control the electron distribution function in the center of the wire, which forms the normal region of the SNS junction. The observed voltage and temperature …
We study the supercurrent in quasi-one-dimensional Josephson junctions with a weak link involving magnetism, either via magnetic impurities or via ferromagnetism. In the case of weak links longer than {\color{black}the magnetic pair-breaking} length, the Josephson effect is dominated by mesoscopic fluctuations. We establish the supercurrent-phase dependence $I(φ)$ along with statistics of its sample-dependent properties in junctions with transparent contacts between leads and link. High transparency gives rise to the inverse proximity effect, while the direct proximity effect is suppressed by …
Josephson transport in YBa${}_{2}$Cu${}_{3}$O${}_{7}$ weak links created by focused-helium-ion-beam irradiation: Analysis based on diffusive-SNS-junction model
National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology(日本产业技术综合研究所)
Wide mesoscopic superconducting - normal-metal - superconducting (S-N-S) junctions exhibit Andreev bound states which carry substantial supercurrents, even at temperatures for which the equilibrium Josephson effect is exponentially small --- the currents carried by different states can cancel each other. This cancellation is incomplete whenever the junctions are driven out of equilibrium, e.g., by a dc voltage. This leads to phenomena similar to the usual dc and ac Josephson effects, but dominated by the second harmonic of the Josephson frequency, which may explain some striking recent experim…
In the classical Josephson effect the phase difference across the junction is well defined, and the supercurrent is reduced only weakly by phase diffusion. For mesoscopic junctions with small capacitance the phase undergoes large quantum fluctuations, and the current is also decreased by Coulomb blockade effects. We discuss the behavior of the current-voltage characteristics in a large range of parameters comprising the phase diffusion regime with coherent Josephson current as well as the supercurrent peak due to incoherent Cooper pair tunneling in the Coulomb blockade regime.
We report the successful fabrication of planar V/Cu/V mesoscopic Josephson weak-links of different size, and the analysis of their low-temperature behavior. The shorter junctions exhibit critical currents of several tens of microA at 350 mK, while Josephson coupling persists up to ~2.7 K. Good agreement is obtained by comparing the measured switching currents to a model which holds in the diffusive regime. Our results demonstrate that V is an excellent candidate for the implementation of superconducting nanodevices operating at a few kelvins.
A superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) transistor based on superconducting microcoolers is presented. The proposed 4-terminal device consists of a long SNS Josephson junction whose N region is in addition symmetrically connected to superconducting reservoirs through tunnel barriers (I). Biasing the SINIS line allows to modify the quasiparticle temperature in the weak link, thus controlling the Josephson current. We show that, in suitable voltage and temperature regimes, large supercurrent enhancements can be achieved with respect to equilibrium, due to electron ``cooling'' generate…
One of the best known causes of dissipation in ac driven quantum systems stems from photon absorption. Dissipation can also be caused by the retarded response to the time-dependent excitation, and in general gives insight into the system's relaxation times and mechanisms. We address the dissipation in a mesoscopic normal wire with superconducting contacts, that sustains a supercurrent at zero frequency and that may be expected to remain dissipationless at frequency lower than the superconducting gap. We probe the high frequency linear response of a Normal/Superconductor ring to a time-dependen…
We have experimentally studied the energy levels of a mesoscopic SQUID using inelastic Cooper-pair tunneling. The tunneling in a small Josephson junction depends strongly on its electromagnetic environment. We use this fact to do energy level spectroscopy of a SQUID-loop by coupling it to a small junction. Our samples with strong quasiparticle dissipation are well described by a model of a particle localized in one of the dips in a cosine-potential, while in the samples with weak dissipation we can see formation of energy bands.
We propose and analyze a mesoscopic Josephson junction consisting of two ferromagnetic insulator-superconductors (FI-Ss) coupled through a normal metal (N) layer. The Josephson current of the junction is non-trivially affected by the spin-splitting field induced by the FIs in the two superconductors. In particular, it shows sizeable enhancement by increasing the amplitude of the exchange field ($h_{ex}$) and displays a switchable current-phase relation which depends on the relative orientation of $h_{ex}$ in the FIs. In a realistic EuS/Al-based setup this junction can be exploited as a high-re…
We studied a mesoscopic cross-like normal metal structure connected to two superconducting (S) and two normal (N) reservoirs. We observed the Josephson effect under unusual conditions when there is no current through one of the two S/N interfaces. The potential difference between the S reservoirs was zero unless the voltage applied between S and N reservoirs exceeded a critical value although the electric potential in the N wire connecting the superconductors varied in a nonmonotonic way. The observed effects are discussed theoretically.
Magneto-fluctuations of the normal resistance R_N have been reproducibly observed in high critical temp erature superconductor (HTS) grain boundary junctions, at low temperatures. We attribute them to mesoscopic transport in narrow channels across the grain boundary line. The Thouless energy appears to be the relevant energy scale. Our findings have significant implications on quasiparticle relaxation and coherent transport in HTS grain boundaries.
We study the normal state conductance and the Josephson current in a superconductor-2DEG-superconductor structure where the size/shape of the 2DEG-region can be modified by an additional side-gate electrode. The considered transport properties follow from the retarded Green function which we compute by employing a tight-binding-like representation of the Hamiltonian in the 2DEG region. Our model studies offer a qualitative demonstration of the recently observed effects caused by side-gate modulation.
We report on the fabrication and characterization of a two-terminal mesoscopic interferometer based on three V/Cu/V Josephson junctions having nanoscale cross-section. The junctions have been arranged in a double-ring geometry realized by metallic thin film deposition through a suspended mask defined by electron beam lithography. Although a significant amount of asymmetry between the critical current of each junction is observed we show that the interferometer is able to suppress the supercurrent to a level lower than 6 parts per thousand, being here limited by measurement resolution. The pres…
Microwave irradiation of Nb-InAs-Nb junctions reveals frequency-doubled Josephson currents which persist to high temperatures, in the absence of a critical current. A nonequilibrium dynamical model, based on time-dependent Andreev bound states, successfully accounts for the resulting half-integer Shapiro step and an enhancement in the conductance near zero bias.
