We frame the transverse Anderson localization of light in a one-dimensional disordered optical lattice in the language of localized propagating eigenmodes. The modal analysis allows us to explore localization behavior of a disordered lattice independent of the properties of the external excitation. Various localization-related phenomena, such as the periodic revival of a propagating Anderson-localized beam are easily explained in modal language. We characterize the localization strength by the average width of the guided modes and carry out a detailed analysis of localization behavior as a function of the optical and geometrical parameters of the disordered lattice. We also show that in order to obtain a minimum average mode width, the average width of the individual random sites in the disordered lattice must be larger than the wavelength of the light by approximately a factor of two or more, and the optimum site width for the maximum localization depends on the design parameters of the disordered lattice.
Anderson localization is a ubiquitous interference phenomenon in which waves fail to propagate in a disordered medium. Unlike in a classical resonator, satisfying the favorable condition for the interference in a disordered medium is truly a statistical problem in physics. Recent progress in realizing Anderson localization is mainly limited to the iterative method for optimizing the disordered medium. Availability of an in-situ, active control for optimization surely paves the way of realizing the Anderson localization and its applications. In this letter, we have proposed an electro-optic con…
Disordered optical fibers show novel waveguiding properties, enabled by the transverse Anderson localization of light, and are used for image transport. The strong transverse scattering from the transversely disordered refractive index structure results in transversely confined modes that can freely propagate in the longitudinal direction. In some sense, an Anderson localization disordered fiber behave like a large-core multimode optical fiber, with the advantage, that most modes are highly localized in the transverse plane, so any point in the cross section of the fiber can be used for locali…
Disordered transverse Anderson localizing optical fibers have shown great promise in various applications from image transport to random lasing. Their success is due to their novel waveguiding behavior, which is enabled by the transverse Anderson localization of light. The strong transverse scattering from the transversely disordered refractive index structure results in transversely confined modes that can freely propagate in the longitudinal direction. Therefore, these fibers behave like large-core highly multimode optical fibers, with the peculiar property that most modes are highly localiz…
We investigate the group velocity distribution of waveguide modes in the presence of disorder. The results are based on extensive numerical simulations of disordered optical waveguides using statistical methods. We observe that the narrowest distribution of group velocities is obtained in the presence of a small amount of disorder; therefore, the modal dispersion of an optical pulse is minimized when there is only a slight disorder in the waveguide. The absence of disorder or the presence of a large amount of disorder can result in a large modal dispersion due to the broadening of the distribu…

We investigate and report the optical and laser characteristics of a ytterbium-doped transverse Anderson localizing optical fiber to develop a fundamental understanding of the light propagation, generation, and amplification processes in this novel fiber. Ultimately, the goal based on the measurements and calculations conducted herein is to design and build a random fiber laser with a highly directional beam. The measurements are based on certain observations of the laser pump propagation and amplified spontaneous emission generation in this fiber. Judicious approximations are used in the prop…
We present a detailed theoretical study of the effects of structural disorder on LN photonic crystal slab cavities, ranging from short to long length scales, using a fully-3D Bloch mode expansion technique. We compute the optical density of states, quality factors and effective mode volumes of the cavity modes, with and without disorder, and compare with the localized modes of the corresponding disordered photonic crystal waveguide. We demonstrate how the quality factors and effective mode volumes saturate at a specific cavity length and become bounded by the corresponding values of the Anders…
We explore the interplay of disorder and topological phenomena in honeycomb lattices of atoms coupled by the electromagnetic field. On the one hand, disorder can trigger transitions between distinct topological phases and drive the lattice into the topological Anderson insulator state. On the other hand, the nontrivial topology of the photonic band structure suppresses Anderson localization of modes that disorder introduces inside the band gap of the ideal lattice. Furthermore, we discover that disorder can both open a topological pseudogap in the spectrum of an otherwise topologically trivial…
We experimentally investigate spectral statistics in Anderson localization in two-dimensional amorphous disordered media. Intensity distributions captured over an ultrabroad wavelength range of $\sim 600$~nm and averaged over numerous configurations provided the Ioffe-Regel parameter to be $\sim2.5$ over the investigated wavelength range. The spectra of the disordered structures provided access to several quasimodes, whose widths and separations allowed to directly estimate the optical Thouless conductance $g_{Th}$, consistently observed to be below unity. The probability distribution of $g_{T…
Recent research has shown that coupling between point scatterers in a disordered medium by longitudinal electromagnetic fields is harmful for Anderson localization of light. However, it has been unclear if this feature is generic or specific for point scatterers. The present work demonstrates that the intensity of longitudinal field outside a spherical dielectric scatterer illuminated by monochromatic light exhibits a complicated, nonmonotonous dependence on the scatterer size. Moreover, the intensity is reduced for a hollow sphere, whereas one can adjust the parameters of a coated sphere to o…
Anderson localization does not lead to an exponential decay of intensity of an incident wave with the depth inside a strongly disordered three-dimensional medium. Instead, the average intensity is roughly constant in the first half of a disordered slab, sharply drops in a narrow region in the middle of the sample, and then remains low in the second half of the sample. A universal, scale-free spatial distribution of average intensity is found at mobility edges where the intensity exhibits strong sample-to-sample fluctuations. Our numerical simulations allow us to discriminate between two compet…
