Ab initio calculations show an antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition around 9-10 GPa and a magnetic anomaly at 12 GPa in BiFeO3. The magnetic phase transition also involves a structural and insulator-metal transition. The G-type AFM configuration under pressure leads to an increase of the y component and decrease of the z component of the magnetization, which is caused by the splitting of the dz2 orbital from doubly degenerate eg states. Our results agree with recent experimental results.
Using a first principles based, magnetic tight-binding total energy model, the magnetization energy and moments are computed for various ordered spin configurations in the high pressure polymorphs of iron (fcc, or $γ$-Fe, and hcp, or $ε$-Fe), as well ferromagnetic bcc iron ($α$-Fe). For hcp, a non-collinear, antiferromagnetic, spin configuration that minimizes unfavorable ferromagnetic nearest neighbor ordering is the lowest energy state and is more stable than non-magnetic $ε$ iron up to about 75 GPa. Accounting for non-collinear magnetism yields better agreement with the experimental equatio…
Based on density functional calculations, the relationship between magnetism or superconductivity and electronic states around Fermi level were derived, and the location of the Fermi level in nonmagnetic "form" of Laves-phase compounds is very sensitive to determine the presence of nonmagnetism, or ferromagnetism, or antiferromagnetism, or superconductivity. The Fermi level at the nonbonding and antibonding regions corresponds for the nonmagnetism and magnetism, respectively, whereas at bonding region with responsibility for superconductivity. This rules will be very useful and convenient to s…
We report magnetization and differential thermal analysis measurements as a function of pressure accross the martensitic transition in magnetically superelastic Ni-Mn-In alloys. It is found that the properties of the martensitic transformation are significantly affected by the application of pressure. All transition temperatures shift to higher values with increasing pressure. The largest rate of temperature shift with pressure has been found for Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{34}$In$_{16}$ as a consequence of its small entropy change at the transition. Such a strong pressure dependence of the transition tempe…
Density functional calculations of electronic structure, total energy, structural distortions, and magnetism for hydrogenated single-layer, bilayer, and multi-layer graphene are performed. It is found that hydrogen-induced magnetism can survives only at very low concentrations of hydrogen (single-atom regime) whereas hydrogen pairs with optimized structure are usually nonmagnetic. Chemisorption energy as a function of hydrogen concentration is calculated, as well as energy barriers for hydrogen binding and release. The results confirm that graphene can be perspective material for hydrogen stor…
Some doped semiconductors have recently been shown to display superconductivity or weak ferromagnetism. Here we investigate the electronic structure and conditions for magnetism in a supercells of cubic XW_{26}O_{81}, where X=Nb,V and Re. The undoped material is an insulator, and although the slightly doped material is a metal, it is far from the Stoner criterion of magnetism. The conditions of a localized density-of-states which varies rapidly with the energy, resemble those of doped hexaborides. The virtual crystal approximation is used to vary the doping level. A small moment appears if the…
Layered transition-metal compounds with controllable magnetic behaviors provide many fascinating opportunities for the fabrication of high-performance magneto-electric and spintronic devices. The tuning of their electronic and magnetic properties is usually limited to the change of layer thickness, electrostatic doping, and the control of electric and magnetic fields. However, pressure has been rarely exploited as a control parameter for tailoring their magneto-electric properties. Here, we report a unique pressure-driven isostructural phase transition in layered CrCl3 accompanied by a simulta…
We report the structural and magnetic properties of four-layer Aurivillius compound Bi$_5$FeTi$_3$O$_{15}$ (BFTO) at high hydrostatic pressure conditions. The high-pressure XRD data does not explicitly show structural phase transitions with hydrostatic pressure, however the observed changes in lattice parameters indicate structural modifications at different pressure values. In the initial pressure region values, the lattice parameters $\textit{a}$- and $\textit{b}$- are nearly equal implying a quasi-tetragonal structure, however as the pressure increases $\textit{a}$- and $\textit{b}$- diverg…
We present first principles charge- and spin-selfconsistent electronic structure computations on the Heusler-type disordered alloys Fe$_{3-x}$V$_{x}$X for three different metalloids X=(Si, Ga and Al). In these calculations we use the methodology based on the Korringa-Kohn- Rostoker formalism and the coherent-potential approximation (KKR-CPA), generalized to treat disorder in multi-component complex alloys.
Electronic structures of MC where M is the alkali and alkaline earth metals with the rocksalt structure are calculated by full potential density functional codes. We find that the spin magnetic moment in the compounds is mainly contributed by the spin polarized p-orbitals of carbon. The large distance between the carbon makes the p-orbitals localized, which induces magnetic instability according to the Stoner criterion. The electronic structure can be mapped to the rigid band model. SrC, BaC and RaC are half-metals, while KC, RbC and CsC are magnetic semiconductors
We report a density functional study of the electronic structure and magnetism of Y2Ni7. The results show itinerant magnetism very similar to that in the weak itinerant ferromagnet Ni3Al. The electropositive Y atoms in Y2Ni7 serves to donate charge to the Ni host mostly in the form of $s$ electrons. The non-spin-polarized state shows a high density of states at the Fermi level, N(EF) due to flat bands. This leads to the ferromagnetic instability. However, there are also several much more dispersive bands crossing E(F), which should promote the conductivity. Spin fluctuation effects appear to b…
The half-metallic properties of a new and promising full-Heusler compound, Zr2CoSn, are investigated by means of ab initio calculations within the Density Functional Theory framework. The ferromagnetic ordered Hg2CuTi-type crystal structure is energetically favorable and the optimized lattice parameter is 6.76 A. The total magnetic moment calculated is 3 uB/f.u. and follows a typical Slater-Pauling dependence. The half metallicity disappears if the unit cell volume is contracted by 5 %.
The pressure induced bcc to hcp transition in Fe has been investigated via ab-initio electronic structure calculations. It is found by the disordered local moment (DLM) calculations that the temperature induced spin fluctuations result in the decrease of the energy of Burgers type lattice distortions and softening of the transverse $N$-point $TA_1$ phonon mode with $[\bar{1}10]$ polarization. As a consequence, spin disorder in an system leads to the increase of the amplitude of atomic displacements. On the other hand, the exchange coupling parameters obtained in our calculations strongly decre…
Orthorhombic GdFeO$_3$ has attracted considerable attention in recent years because its magnetic structure is similar to that in the well-known BiFeO$_3$ material. We investigate electronic structure, magnetism, and optical properties of the orthorhombic GdFeO$_3$ in terms of density-functional-theory calculations. The modified Becke-Johnson (mBJ) exchange potential is adopted to improve on the description of the electronic structure. Our calculation show that the G-type antiferromagnetic (G-AFM ordering of Fe spins) phase of orthorhombic GdFeO$_3$ is stable compared to other magnetic phases. …
We study the properties of ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure BaMn$_2$As$_2$ and BaMn$_2$Sb$_2$ using density functional calculations of the electronic and magnetic as well experimental measurements on single crystal samples of BaMn$_2$As$_2$. These materials are local moment magnets with moderate band gap antiferromagnetic semiconducting ground states. The electronic structures show substantial Mn - pnictogen hybridization, which stabilizes an intermediate spin configuration for the nominally $d^5$ Mn. The results are discussed in the context of possible thermoelectric applications and the relationship…
We have performed ab initio calculations to systematically investigate electronic properties and magnetism of insulating non-magnetic beryllium monoxide nanotubes induced by non-magnetic sp impurities: boron, carbon and nitrogen. We found that in the presence of these sp impurities, which replace oxygen atoms, the non-magnetic BeO NTs transform into magnetic semiconductors, which acquire magnetization caused by spin splitting of (B,C,N) 2p states located in the forbidden gap of a BeO tube. The magnetic moments of the impurities vary from 0.65 to 1.60. On the contrary, when (B,C,N) dopants subs…
Yttrium iron garnet is a complex ferrimagnetic insulator with 20 magnon modes which is used extensively in fundamental experimental studies of magnetisation dynamics. As a transition metal oxide with moderate gap (2.8 eV), yttrium iron garnet requires a careful treatment of electronic correlation. We have applied quasiparticle self-consistent GW to provide a fully ab initio description of the electronic structure and resulting magnetic properties, including the parameterisation of a Heisenberg model for magnetic exchange interactions. Subsequent spin dynamical modelling with quantum statistics…
We here study electronic structure and magnetic properties of bcc Co$_{x}$Fe$_{1-x}$, Cr$_{x}$Fe$_{1-x}$ and Mn$_{x}$Fe$_{1-x}$ in their ferromagnetic phases using Augmented Space Recursion technique coupled with tight-binding linearized muffin tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method. We make a systematic study of magnetic properties like magnetic moment and Curie temperature and try to draw some conclusions on their variation across the row of 3-{\it d} transition metal series in periodic table using arguments based on effects like charge transfer, exchange splitting and hybridization.
The results of the electronic structure calculations performed on SmN by using the LDA+U method with and without including the spin-orbit coupling are presented. Within the LDA+U approach, a N(2$p$) band polarization of $\simeq 0.3\ μ_B$ is induced by Sm(4$f$)-N(2$p$) hybridization, and a half-metallic ground state is obtained. By including spin-orbit coupling the magnetic structure was shown to be antiferromagnetic of type II, with Sm spin and orbital moments nearly cancelling. This results into a semiconducting ground state, which is in agreement with experimental results.
We demonstrate control of the magnetism of Pd(100) ultrathin films, which show d-electron quantum-well induced ferromagnetism, via modulation of the interface electronic state using density functional calculation. From an analysis based on the phase model, forming the Au/Pd(100) interface induces hybridization of the wave function of d-electron quantum-well states, and modulates the term of the scattering phase shift as a function of the reciprocal lattice point. In contrast, forming the Al interface, which has only s-electrons at the Fermi energy, cannot modify the scattering phase shift. Our…
We use synchrotron x-ray diffraction and electrical transport under pressure to probe both the magnetism and the structure of single crystal NiS2 across its Mott-Hubbard transition. In the insulator, the low-temperature antiferromagnetic order results from superexchange among correlated electrons and couples to a (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) superlattice distortion. Applying pressure suppresses the insulating state, but enhances the magnetism as the superexchange increases with decreasing lattice constant. By comparing our results under pressure to previous studies of doped crystals we show that this depen…
We have studied the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of spinel $\rm Co_3O_4$(111) surfaces and their interfaces with ZnO (0001) using density functional theory (DFT) within the Generalized Gradient Approximation with on-site Coulomb repulsion term (GGA+U). Two possible forms of spinel surface, containing $\rm Co^{2+} $ and $\rm Co^{3+} $ ions and terminated with either cobalt or oxygen ions were considered, as well as their interface with zinc oxide. Our calculations demonstrate that $\rm Co^{3+} $ ions attain non-zero magnetic moments at the surface and interface, in contrast to…
Density functional calculations are used to investigate the electronic structure of two-dimensional 5d tantalum carbides with honeycomb-like lattice structures. We focus on changes in the low-energy bands near the Fermi level with dimensionality. We find that the Ta 5d states dominate, but the extended nature of the wavefunctions makes them weakly correlated. The carbide sheets are prone to long range magnetic order. We evaluate the stability of these states to enhanced electron--electron interactions through a Hubbard U correction. Lastly, we find spin orbit interactions strongly renormalize …
Experimentally discovered compounds in the iron-nitrogen system belong to the low concentration part of the Fe-N phase diagram. In our paper, which is based on ab initio calculations we have studied formation and stability of high-pressure iron mono-nitride phases, and particularly the new magnetic phase with a NiAs-type structure. We have investigated the role of dynamic, thermodynamic and electronic properties, such as electronic correlations and pressure-induced phase stabilisation. We demonstrate that the new hexagonal FeN phase is stable for a wide range of external pressure and it can be…
The effects of magnetism on high pressure properties of transition metals and transition metal compounds can be quite important. In the case of Fe, magnetism is responsible for stability of the body-centered cubic (bcc) phase at ambient conditions, and the large thermal expansivity in face-centered cubic (fcc) iron, and also has large effects on the equation of state and elasticity of hexagonal close-packed (hcp) iron. In transition metal oxides, local magnetic moments are responsible for their insulating behavior. LDA+U results are presented for CoO and FeO, and predictions are made for high …
Magnetic susceptibility of elemental copper (Cu) shows an anomalous rise at low temperatures superimposed on the expected atypical diamagnetic response. Such temperature dependent susceptibility, which is also known as the Curie tail, can not be explained on the basis of Larmor diamagnetic and Pauli paramagnetic contributions expected in Cu. Using valence band resonant photoemission spectroscopy results and density functional theory calculations, we show the magnetic anomaly appears due to presence of holes in Cu 3d band, which originates from thermally excited electronic configuration. Our st…
Recent experiments showed that Co undergoes a phase transition from ferromagnetic hcp phase to non-magnetic fcc one around 100 GPa. Since the transition is of first order, a certain region of co-existence of the two phases is present. By means of \textit{ab initio} calculations, we found that the hcp phase itself undergoes a series of electronic topological transitions (ETTs), which affects both elastic and magnetic properties of the material. Most importantly, we propose that the sequence of ETTs lead to the stabilisation of a non-collinear spin arrangement in highly compressed hcp Co. Detail…
Graphene has attracted a great interest in material science due to its novel electronic structrues. Recently, magnetism discovered in graphene based systems opens the possibility of their spintronics application. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the magnetic behaviors and electronic structures of graphene systems, including 2-dimensional graphene, 1-dimensional graphene nanoribbons, and 0-dimensional graphene nanoclusters. Theoretical research suggests that such metal-free magnetism mainly comes from the localized states or edges states. By applying external electric field, or by …
Recent studies of FeSi$_{(1-x)}$Ge$_x$, which found a transition from an insulating to a magnetic metallic state near $x$=0.25, have revived the discussion about the role of strong correlation in these systems. Here are spin polarized band calculations made for 64-atom supercells of FeSi$_{(1-x)}$Ge$_x$ for different $x$ and different volumes for large $x$. The results show that the small band gap in FeSi is closed for $x \geq 0.3$, because of both substitutional disorder and increased volume. Ferromagnetism appears near this composition and becomes enforced for increasing $x$. The $x$-depende…
First principles FPLAPWcalculations were performed in the framework of Density Functional Theory (DFT), to study the electronic structures and magnetic properties for the new full-Heusler compounds: Sc2CoZ (Z=Si, Ge, Sn). The investigated materials are stable against decomposition, in ferromagnetic configuration and crystallize in the inverse Heusler structures. The half-metallic properties as function of the variation of unit cell volumes are analysed regarding the fourth main group constituent elements. The electronic structure calculations for Sc2CoSi and Sc2CoSn show half-metallic characte…

In this paper, we systematically investigated the structural and magnetic properties of CrTe by combining particle swarm optimization algorithm and first-principles calculations. With the electronic correlation effect considered, we predicted the ground-state structure of CrTe to be NiAs-type (space group P63/mmc) structure at ambient pressure, consistent with the experimental observation. Moreover, we found two extra meta-stable Cmca and R3m structure which have negative formation enthalpy and stable phonon dispersion at ambient pressure. The Cmca structure is a layered antiferromagnetic meta…
Recent experiments on Pd$_{3}$Fe intermetallics [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 237202 (2009)] have revealed that the system behaves like a classical invar alloy under high pressure. The experimental pressure-volume relation suggests an anomalous volume collapse and a substantial increase in bulk modulus around the pressure where invar behavior is observed. With the help of first-principles density functional theory based calculations, we have explored various magnetic phases (ferromagnetic, fully and partially disordered local moment, spin spiral) in order to understand the effect of pressure on magne…
Electronic structures of carbides with the rocksalt structure were calculated by full potential electronic codes solving the Kohn-Sham equation. Bonding characters were analyzed by constructing tight-binding Hamiltonian based on maximally-localized Wannier functions. It was found that the cations in these compounds act as an electron provider and the frame is formed by the carbon atoms. The electronic states in the vicinity of the Fermi level are mainly from the p-orbitals of C. Pressure and doping are two efficient ways to tune the magnetic and electronic properties of these compounds. It tur…
The noncentrosymmetric ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlSi with simultaneous space-inversion (SI) and time-reversal (TR) symmetry breaking provides a unique platform for the exploration of novel topological states. Here, by employing electrical and thermoelectrical transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), high-pressure techniques, and band calculations, we demonstrate that magnetism and pressure can serve as efficient parameters to tune the positions of Weyl nodes in CeAlSi. At ambient pressure, an anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and an anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) arise in t…
Enhancement of magnetism of Fe that occurs by alloying with Cr or V is discussed on the basis of first-principles electronic structure calculation. The d states of Fe next to Cr(V) are pushed down to the lower energy side compared to those of pure Fe due to the hybridization with Cr(V) d states, which leads a Co-like electronic structure for the Fe atom. This enhances magnetic moments of other Fe atoms and also the exchange couplings among them. The same mechanism works as well for the magnetism of Fe/Cr heterostructures. The idea is extended to design of a new type of antiferromagnets with hi…
We have studied in details the electronic structure and magnetism in M (Mn and Cr) doped semiconducting half-Heusler compounds FeVSb, CoTiSb and NiTiSn (XM$_{x}$Y$_{1-x}$Z) in a wide concentration range using local-spin density functional method in the framework of tight-binding linearized muffin tin orbital method(TB-LMTO) and supercell approach. Our calculations indicate that some of these compounds are not only ferromagnetic but also half-metallic and may be useful for spintronics applications. The electronic structure of the doped systems is analyzed with the aid of a simple model where we…

We present a comprehensive study of the energetics and magnetic properties of ZnO clusters doped with 3d transition metals (TM) using ab initio density functional calculations in the framework of generalized gradient approximation + Hubbard U (GGA+U) method. Our results within GGA+U for all 3d dopants except Ti indicate that antiferromagnetic interaction dominates in a neutral, defect-free cluster. Formation energies are calculated to identify the stable defects in the ZnO cluster. We have analyzed in details the role of these defects to stabilize ferromagnetism when the cluster is doped with …
We address the effect of functionalization on the electronic and magnetic properties of magnetite surface as an indicator of the same properties in nanoparticles too big for a direct ab-initio approach. Using well-established methods and references (namely LDA+U on magnetite surfaces) we could verify the validity of our approach, and using two typical ligands, dopamine and citrate, namely pi and sigma electron donors, we could predict that those ligands would induce a different change in the electronic properties of the systems, but in both cases an enhancement of magnetization.
In this paper, we present a coupled experimental/theoretical investigation of pressure effect on the ferromagnetism of LaCrGe3 and LaCrSb3 compounds. The magnetic, electronic, elastic and mechanical properties of LaCrGe3 and LaCrSb3 at ambient condition are studied by first-principles density functional theory calculations. The pressure dependences of the magnetic properties of LaCrGe3 and LaCrSb3 are also investigated. The ferromagnetism in LaCrGe3 is rather fragile with a ferro- to paramagnetic transition at a relatively small pressure (around 7 GPa from our calculations, and 2 GPa in experi…
In this paper, we report the results of an ambient and high pressure study of a 5f-electron ferromagnet URhGa. The work is focused on measurements of magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a single crystal sample and on the construction of the p-T phase diagram. Diamond anvil cells were employed to measure the magnetization and electrical resistivity pressures up to ~ 9 GPa. At ambient pressure, URhGa exhibits collinear ferromagnetic ordering of uranium magnetic moments μU ~ 1.1 μB (at 2 K) aligned along the c-axis of the hexagonal crystal structure below the Curie temperature TC = 41K. With…
We study the effect of pressure on the localized magnetic moments induced by vacancies in bilayer graphene in the presence of topological defects breaking the bipartite nature of the lattice. By using a mean-field Hubbard model we address the two inequivalent types of vacancies that appear in the Bernal stacking bilayer graphene. We find that by applying pressure in the direction perpendicular to the layers the critical value of the Hubbard interaction needed to polarize the system decreases. The effect is particularly enhanced for one type of vacancies, and admits straightforward generalizati…
Using a density functional theory based electronic structure method and semi-local density approximation, we study the interplay of geometric confinement, magnetism and external electric fields on the electronic structure and the resulting band gaps of multilayer graphene ribbons whose edges are saturated with molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) or hydroxyl (OH) groups. We discuss the similarities and differences of computed features in comparison with the atomic hydrogen (or H-) saturated ribbons and flakes. For H$_2$ edge-saturation, we find \emph{shifted} labeling of three armchair ribbon classes an…
We report crystal structure, electronic structure, and magnetism of manganese tetraboride, MnB4, synthesized under high-pressure high-temperature conditions. In contrast to superconducting FeB4 and metallic CrB4, which are both orthorhombic, MnB4 features a monoclinic crystal structure. Its lower symmetry originates from a Peierls distortion of the Mn chains. This distortion nearly opens the gap at the Fermi level, but despite the strong dimerization and the proximity of MnB4 to the insulating state, we find indications for a sizable paramagnetic effective moment of about 1.7 muB/f.u., ferroma…
The distribution of noncollinear magnetism in an electronic system provides information about the kinetic energy as well as some kinetic energy densities. Two different everywhere-positive kinetic densities related to the Schrödinger--Pauli Hamiltonian are considered. For one-electron systems described by a single Pauli spinor, the electron density, spin density and current density completely determines these kinetic energy densities. For many-electron systems, lower bounds on the kinetic energy densities are proved. These results generalize a lower bound due to von Weizsäcker, which is based …
Inspired by a recent pressure experiment in fcc Ni, we propose a simple method to use pressure to investigate the laser-induced femtosecond magnetism. Since the pressure effect on the electronic and magnetic properties can be well controlled experimentally, this leaves little room for ambiguity when compared with theory. Here we report our theoretical pressure results in fcc Ni: Pressure first suppresses the spin moment reduction, and then completely diminishes it; further increase in pressure to 40 GPa induces a demagnetization-to-magnetization transition. To reveal its microscopic origin, we…
To efficiently manipulate magnetism is a key physical issue for modern condensed matter physics, which is also crucial for magnetic functional applications. Most previous relevant studies rely on the tuning of spin texture, while the spin orientation is often negligible. As an exception, spin-orbit coupled $J_{\rm eff}$ states of $4d$/$5d$ electrons provide an ideal platform for emergent quantum effects. However, many expectations have not been realized due to the complexities of real materials. Thus the pursuit for more ideal $J_{\rm eff}$ states remains ongoing. Here a near-ideal $J_{\rm eff…
We unveil the nature of the structural disorder in bottom-up zigzag graphene nanoribbons along with its effect on the magnetism and electronic transport on the basis of scanning probe microscopies and first-principles calculations. We find that edge-missing m-xylene units emerging during the cyclodehydrogenation step of the on-surface synthesis are the most common point defects. These "bite'' defects act as spin-1 paramagnetic centers, severely disrupt the conductance spectrum around the band extrema, and give rise to spin-polarized charge transport. We further show that the electronic conduct…
In this study, the magnetism and electronic structure of LaTiO$_3$ bilayers along both the ($001$) and ($111$) orientations are calculated using the density functional theory. The band insulator LaScO$_3$ is chosen as the barrier layer and substrate to obtain the isolating LaTiO$_3$ bilayer. For both the ($001$)- and ($111$)-oriented cases, LaTiO$_3$ demonstrates the G-type antiferromagnetism as the ground state, similar to the bulk material. However, the electronic structure is significantly changed. The occupied bands of Ti are much narrower in the ($111$) case, giving a nearly flat band. As…
The magnetism of the double perovskite compounds \SLFCOx\ ($x$ = 0, 1, 2) are contrasted using magnetization, neutron diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance with the support from density functional theory calculations. \LFCO\ is identified as a long-range ordered antiferromagnet displaying a near-room temperature transition at $T_N$ = 270~K, accompanied by a low temperature structural phase transition at $T_S$ = 200~K. The structural phase transformation at $T_S$ occurs from $R\overline{3}c$ at 300~K to $Pnma$ at 200~K. The density functional theory calculations support an insulating …
High-quality (001)-oriented (pseudo-cubic notation) ferromagnetic YTiO$_3$ thin films were epitaxially synthesized in a layer-by-layer way by pulsed laser deposition. Structural, magnetic and electronic properties were characterized by reflection-high-energy-electron-diffraction, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometry, and element-resolved resonant soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy. To reveal ferromagnetism of the constituent titanium ions, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy was carried out using four detection modes probing complimentary spatial scale, which overcomes a…
The superposition of flexoelectronic doping and topological phonons give rise to topological electronic magnetism of phonon in an inhomogeneously strained Si in the bilayer structure with metal. In case of ferromagnetic metal and Si bilayer structure, the flexoelectronic doping will also give rise to larger spin current, which will lead to large spin to charge conversion due to topological electronic magnetism of phonon. By applying a temperature difference to ferromagnetic metal/Si bilayer structure under an applied strain gradient, a large thermoelectric response can be generated. In this ex…
LiCrO2 is a 2D triangular antiferromagnet, isostructural with the common battery material LiCoO2 and a well-known Jahn-Teller antiferromagnet NaNiO2. As opposed to the latter, LiCrO2 exibits antiferromagnetic exchange in Cr planes, which has been ascribed to direct Cr-Cr d-d overlap. Using LDA and LDA+U first principles calculations I confirm this conjecture and show that (a) direct d-d overlap is indeed enhanced compared to isostructural Ni and Cr compounds, (b) p-d charge transfer gap is also enhanced, thus suppressing the ferromagnetic superexchange, (c) the calculated magnetic Hamiltonian …
The emergence of magnetism in otherwise nonmagnetic compounds and its underlying mechanisms have become the subject of intense research. Here we demonstrate that the nonmagnetic oxygen vacancies are responsible for an unconventional magnetic state common for titanate interfaces and surfaces. Using an effective multiorbital modelling, we find that the presence of localized vacancies leads to an interplay of ferromagnetic order in the itinerant t2g band and complex magnetic oscillations in the orbitally-reconstructed eg-band, which can be tuned by gate fields at oxide interfaces. The magnetic ph…
Using first principles calculations, we analyze structural and magnetic trends as a function of charge doping and pressure in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, and compare to experimentally established facts. We find that density functional theory, while accurately reproducing the structural and magnetic ordering at ambient pressure, fails to reproduce some structural trends as pressure is increased. Most notably, the Fe-As bondlength which is a gauge of the magnitude of the magnetic moment, $μ$, is rigid in experiment, but soft in calculation, indicating residual local Coulomb interactions. By calculating the …
