We re-examine one-pion exchange as a possible binding mechanism in the X(3872) charmonium-like state and argue it to be not sufficiently binding for this purpose. We conclude therefore that other short-range dynamics are responsible for the X formation.
The pion form factor calculation in the ``point-form'' of relativistic quantum mechanics is re-considered. Particular attention is given to the relation between the momentum of the system and the momentum transfer as well as to the quark current.
We calculate isospin breaking in pion-nucleon scattering in the threshold region in the framework of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. All effects due to quark mass differences as well as real and virtual photons are consistently included. As an application, we discuss the energy dependence of the triangle relation that connects elastic scattering on the proton pi+- p --> pi+- p with the charge exchange reaction pi- p --> pi0 n.
The isoscalar single-pion production exhibits a broad bump in the energy dependence of the total cross section, which does not correspond to the usual opening of the $N^*(1440)$ production channel with subsequent pion decay. In arxiv:2102.05575 it was interpreted as a narrow Breit-Wigner structure, which leads in a sequential single-pion production process to a possible explanation of the $d^*(2380)$ resonance. We demonstrate that such an attempt fails already, when confronted with the data base for isoscalar single-pion production. We investigate whether the observed bump structure rather poi…
Chiral Ward identities lead to consistent accounting for the sigma's width in the linear sigma model's Feynman rules. Reanalysis of pion scattering data at threshold imply a mass for the sigma of 600+ 200 - 100 MeV.
We investigate threshold pion photoproduction in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We give the expansion of the electric dipole amplitude $E_{0+}$ to three orders in $μ$, the ratio of the pion to nucleon mass, and show that it is slowly converging. We argue that this observable is not a good testing ground for the chiral dynamics of QCD. In contrast, we exhibit new and fastly converging low--energy theorems in the P--waves which should be used to constrain the data analysis. We also discuss the importance of polarization observables to accurately pin down certain multip…
We re-investigate Adler's PCAC relation in the presence of an external electromagnetic field within the framework of QCD coupled to external fields. We discuss pion electroproduction within a tree-level approximation to chiral perturbation theory and explicitly verify a chiral Ward identity referred to as the Adler-Gilman relation. We critically examine soft-momentum techniques and point out how inadmissable approximations may lead to results incompatible with chiral symmetry. As a result we confirm that threshold pion electroproduction is indeed a tool to obtain information on the axial form …
An implicit four dimensional regularization is applied to calculate the axial-vector-vector anomalous amplitude. The present technique always complies with results of Dimensional Regularization and can be easily applied to processes involving odd numbers of $γ_5$ matrices. This is illustrated explicitely in the example of this letter.

At temperatures less than a few MeV, the efficiency of the neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung from nucleons interracting with the condensed pion field is much less than previously estimated by other authors. The physical reason for this is a periodic structure of the developed pion condensate. The repeated interactions of a nucleon with the periodic pion field modify the nucleon spectrum, which is split into two bands. The energy gap between the bands is about a few MeV or larger, even if the amplitude of the pion field is small compared with the pion mass.
The electromagnetic form factor of the pion is calculated in the "point-form" of relativistic quantum mechanics using simple, phenomenological wave functions. It is found that the squared charge radius of the pion is predicted one order of magnitude larger than the experimental value and the asymptotic behavior expected from QCD cannot be reproduced. The origin of these discrepancies is analyzed. The present results confirm previous ones obtained from a theoretical model and call for major improvements in the implementation of the "point-form" approach.
The Fubini-Furlan-Rossetti sum rule for pion photoproduction on the nucleon is evaluated by dispersion relations at constant t, and the corrections to the sum rule due to the finite pion mass are calculated. Near threshold these corrections turn out to be large due to pion-loop effects, whereas the sum rule value is closely approached if the dispersion integrals are evaluated for sub-threshold kinematics. This extension to the unphysical region provides a unique framework to determine the low-energy constants of chiral perturbation theory by global properties of the excitation spectrum.
Forward-backward (charge) asymmetry in the processes of $e^+e^-$ annihilation into a pair of charged pseudoscalar mesons is recalculated in the one-loop approximation. The exact dependence on the meson masses is taken into account. Results known in the literature are partially corrected. The bulk of the charge asymmetry appears due to double-photon exchange in $s$ channel. Experimental studies of the asymmetry can be used to verify the point-like approximation used in calculation of radiative corrections due to emission of photons by pions or kaons.
Single pion leptoproduction in the region of the (3,3) resonance is currently of high interest for at least two reasons: (i) These reactions constitute an important part of the total cross section in low energy reactions and are utilized to detect neutrino oscillations in current and future long baseline experiments. (ii) Intranuclear rescattering of the pions in heavy nuclei results in interesting and sizable modifications of the free nucleon cross sections which are testable in electroproduction experiments. In this article we give a basic introduction to the pion multiple scattering model o…
As a result of a new improved fit to old bubble chamber data of the dominant axial C_5^A nucleon-to-Delta form factor, and due to the relevance of this form factor for neutrino induced coherent pion production, we re-evaluate our model predictions in Phys. Rev. D79, 013002 (2009) for different observables of the latter reaction. Central values for the total cross sections increase by 20% to 30%, while differential cross sections do not change their shape appreciably. Furthermore, we also compute the uncertainties on total, differential and flux averaged cross sections induced by the errors in …
Using constituent quark model constraints we calculate the gluon and sea-quark content of pions solely in terms of their valence density (fixed by πN Drell-Yan data) and the known sea and gluon distributions of the nucleon, using the most recent updated valence-like input parton densities of the nucleon. The resulting small-x dynamical QCD predictions for g^π(x,Q^2) and \bar{q}^π(x,Q^2) are unique and parameter free. Simple analytic parametrizations of the resulting parton distributions of the pion are presented in LO and NLO. These results and parametrizations will be important, among other t…
We re-evaluate our model predictions in Phys. Rev. D 79, 013002 (2009) for different observables in neutrino induced coherent pion production. This comes as a result of the new improved fit to old bubble chamber data of the dominant axial C_5^A nucleon-to-Delta form factor. We find an increase of 20%-30% in the values for the total cross sections. Uncertainties induced by the errors in the determination of C_5^A are computed. Our new results turn out to be compatible within about $1σ$ with the former ones. We also stress the existing tension between the recent experimental determination of the…
We propose a new, renormalizable approach to nucleon-nucleon scattering in chiral effective field theory based on the manifestly Lorentz invariant form of the effective Lagrangian without employing the heavy-baryon expansion. For the pion-less case and for the formulation based on perturbative pions, the new approach reproduces the known results obtained by Kaplan, Savage and Wise. Contrary to the standard formulation utilizing the heavy-baryon expansion, the nonperturbatively resummed one-pion exchange potential can be renormalized by absorbing all ultraviolet divergences into the leading S-w…
Two-pion transitions in charmonium and bottomonium are considered with the leading relativistic effects taken into account. The contribution of the chromo- magnetic interaction of the charmed quarks to the amplitude of the decay $ψ(2S) \to ππJ/ψ$ is estimated from the available data. This contribution is enhanced by a factor of three in the decay $η_c(2S) \to ππη_c$ and should produce a noticeable modification of the rate and the spectrum in the latter decay. It is argued that the peculiar observed spectrum in the decay $Υ(3S) \to ππΥ$ arises due to a dynamical suppression of the leading nonre…
We analyze new QCD sum rules for the pion wave function $ϕ_π(x)$, obtained recently by A.V. Radyushkin in the framework of the non-local vacuum condensates method for non-diagonal correlators, and suggest a new approach for extracting wave functions of the $π$-meson and of its first resonances. As a result we obtain approximately the same form of the pion wave function by using two different methods and for two different ansatzes of non-local quark condensates. We predict the mass of the $π'$-resonance and obtain the form of its wave function. The first method uses integrated (in a sense) prop…
Long ago an unexpected and unexplainable phenomena was observed. The distribution of muons from positive pion decay at rest was anisotropic with an excess in the backward direction relative to the direction of the proton beam from which the pions were created. Although this effect was observed by several different groups with pions produced by different means, the result was not accepted by the physics community, because it is in direct conflict with a large set of other experiments indicating that the pion is a pseudoscalar particle. It is possible to satisfy both sets of experiments if helic…
We provide a theoretical update of the calculations of the pi0-gamma*-gamma form factor in the LCSR framework, including up to six polynomials in the conformal expansion of the pion distribution amplitude and taking into account twist-six corrections related to the photon emission at large distances. The results are compared with the calculations of the B-> pi l nu decay and pion electromagnetic form factors in the same framework. Our conclusion is that the recent BaBar measurements of the pi0-gamma*-gamma form factor at large momentum transfers are consistent with QCD, although they do sugges…
The local-duality formulation of QCD sum rules allows for the prediction of hadronic form factors without knowledge of the subtle details of their structure. With the aid of this formalism, we take a fresh look at the behaviours of the charged-pion elastic form factor and of the form factors entering in the transitions of the ground-state neutral unflavoured pseudoscalar mesons pi^0, eta, eta' to one real and one virtual photon within a broad range of momentum transfers Q^2. The uncertainties induced by the approximations inherent to this local-duality approach are estimated by studying, in pa…
A direct connection can be made between mixing angles in negative parity baryons and the spin coupling of constituent quarks. The mixing angles do not depend on spectral data. These angles are recalculated for gluon exchange and pion exchange between quarks. For pion exchange the results of Glozman and Riska are corrected. The experimental data on mixing are very similar to those derived from gluon exchange but substantially different from the values obtained for pion exchange.
We reanalyze the anomalous angular distribution of lepton pairs produced in a pion-induced Drell-Yan process by taking into account the Glauber gluon effect in the $k_T$ factorization theorem. Compared to the previous study, we adopt the realistic parton distribution functions (PDFs) for a proton from the CTEQ and for a pion from the xFitter, include the QCD evolutions of the strong coupling and the PDFs, and integrate the differential cross section over the kinematic regions for the NA10, E615 and COMPASS experiments. These improvements then allow rigorous confrontations of theoretical result…
We evaluate the photon spectra from the reaction $πρ\ra πγ$ for the exchange of $π$, $ρ$, $ω$, $ϕ$ and $a_1$ as intermediary mesons. It is found that the contributions from the intermediary $a_1$ is more than any other meson exchange processes up to photon energies 2.5 GeV.
The two-photon-exchange (TPE) effects in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow π^+π^-$ at large momentum transfer are discussed within the perturbative QCD (pQCD). The contributions from the twist-2 and twist-3 distribution amplitudes (DAs) of pion are considered in the estimation. Different with the results under the one-photon-exchange (OPE) approximation, the TPE effects result in an asymmetry of the differential cross section on the scattering angle. The precise measurement of this asymmetry by the further experiment is an precise test of pQCD at large momentum transfer. The time-like electromag…
Understanding single pion production reactions on free nucleons is the first step towards a correct description of these processes in nuclei, which are important for signal and background contributions in current and near future accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments. In this work, we reanalyze our previous studies of neutrino-induced one-pion production on nucleons for outgoing $πN$ invariant masses below 1.4 GeV. Our motivation is to get a better description of the $ν_μn\toμ^- nπ^+$ cross section, for which current theoretical models give values significantly below data. This channel i…
We show that chiral symmetry is responsible for large cancellations in the two-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon interaction, which are similar to those occuring in free pion-nucleon scattering.
We study the implications of the heavy-quark spin symmetry for the possible spin partners of the exotic states $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$ in the spectrum of bottomonium. We formulate and solve numerically the coupled-channel equations for the $Z_b$ states that allow for a dynamical generation of these states as hadronic molecules. The force includes short-range contact terms and the one-pion exchange potential, both treated fully nonperturbatively. The strength of the potential at leading order is fixed completely by the pole positions of the $Z_b$ states such that the mass and the most pro…
We present calculations of the two-pion-exchange contribution to proton-proton scattering at 90 degrees using form factors appropriate for representing the distribution of the constituent partons of the nucleon. Talk given at MENU2001, George Washington University, July 26-31, 2001
A set of fully relativistic one-pion-exchange electromagnetic operators is developed for use in one-particle emission reactions induced by electrons. To preserve the gauge invariance of the theory additional pionic correlation operators are required beyond the usual meson-exchange current operators. Of these, in the present work emphasis is placed on the self-energy current which is infinite and needs to be renormalized. The renormalized current is expanded to first order to obtain a genuine one-pion-exchange contribution to the inclusive responses.
The Nucleon-Nucleon interaction in the singlet ($^1 S_0$) and triplet ($^3 S_1$) channels have been studied in the framework of Relativistic Harmonic Model using the Resonating Group Method in Born-Oppenheimer approximation. The full Hamiltonian consists of the kinetic energy, two body confinement potential, confined one gluon exchange potential and one pion exchange potential. Contribution of Confined One Gluon Exchange Potential and One Pion Exchange Potential to the adiabatic nucleon-nucleon interaction potential is discussed.
We study the latest $N_f=2+1+1$ and $N_f=2$ ETMC lattice QCD simulations of the nucleon masses and extract the pion-nucleon sigma term utilizing the Feynman-Hellmann theorem in SU(2) baryon chiral perturbation theory with the extended-on-mass-shell scheme. We find that the lattice QCD data can be described quite well already at the next-to-next-to-leading order. The overall picture remains essentially the same at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. Our final result is $σ_{πN}=50.2(1.2)(2.0)$ MeV, or equivalently, $f_{u/d}^N=0.0535(13)(21)$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and…
We revisit the evaluations for the spacelike and timelike $ρπ$ transition form factors $F_{ρπ}(Q^2)$ and $G_{ρπ}(Q^2)$ with the inclusion of the the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD contributions in the framework of the $k_T$ factorization theorem. The infrared divergence is regularized by the transversal momentum carried by external valence quarks, and ultimately absorbed into the meson wave functions. In the region of $ Q^2 \leqslant 2 \, \textrm{GeV}^2 $, where PQCD factorization apporach applicable, the NLO contribution can bring no larger than $ 35\%$ enhancement to the spacelike form fact…
The binding energy of nuclear matter including exchange and pionic effects is calculated in a quark-meson coupling model with massive constituent quarks. As in the case with elementary nucleons in QHD, exchange effects are repulsive. However, the coupling of the mesons directly to the quarks in the nucleons introduces a new effect on the exchange energies that provides an extra repulsive contribution to the binding energy. Pionic effects are not small. Implications of such effects on observables are discussed.
The exchange of two massless neutrinos gives rise to a long range force which couples to weakly charged matter. As has been noted previously in the literature, the potential for this force is $\VN \propto G_{F}^2 / r^5$ with monopole-monople, spin-spin and more complicated interactions. Unfortunately, this is far too small to be observed in present day experiments. We calculate $\VN$ explicitly in the electroweak theory, and show that under very general assumptions forces arising from the exchange of two massless fermions can at best yield $1 / r^5$ potentials.
We perform detailed calculations of two-photon-exchange QED corrections to the cross section of pion electroproduction. The results are obtained with and without the soft-photon approximation; analytic expressions for the radiative corrections are derived. The relative importance of the two-photon correction is analyzed for the kinematics of several experiments at Jefferson Lab. A significant, over 20%, effect due to two-photon exchange is predicted for the backward angles of electron scattering at large transferred momenta.
I describe four serious defects of a widely discussed pion exchange model for interquark forces: it doesn't solve the "spin-orbit problem" as advertised, it fails to describe the internal structure of baryon resonances, it leads to disastrous conclusions when extended to mesons, and it is not reasonably connected to the physics of heavy-light systems.
The amplitudes for the pion-nucleon charge exchange reaction of the Karlsruhe-Helsinki and the George-Washington-University partial wave analyses are compared with those of a Regge-cut model with the aim to explore the possibility to provide high energy constraints for theoretical baryon resonance analyses in the energy region above 2 GeV.
We present a new contribution of the R-parity violating supersymmetry (SUSY) to neutrinoless double beta decay via the pion exchange between decaying neutrons. The pion coupling to the final state electrons is induced by the R-parity violating SUSY interactions. We have found this pion-exchange mechanism to dominate over the conventional two-nucleon one. The latter corresponds to direct interaction between quarks from two decaying neutrons without any light hadronic mediator like pion. The constraints on the certain R-parity violating SUSY parameters are extracted from the current experimental…
The effect of the pion exchange on the line shape of near threshold bottomoniumlike resonances decaying into an $S$ wave pair of $B^{(*)}$ mesons is considered. It is pointed out that this effect, parametrically enhanced by the heavy meson mass, can be of a practical significance in determining the parameters of the bottomoniumlike resonances such as the known $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$ states.
We analyze the most recent data for the pion vector form factor in the timelike region, employing a model-independent approach based on dispersion theory. We confirm earlier observations about the inconsistency of different modern high-precision data sets. Excluding the BaBar data, we find an updated value for the isospin-violating branching ratio $\mathcal{B}(ω\to π^+π^-) = (1.46\pm 0.08) \times 10^{-2}$. As a side result, we also extract an improved value for the pion vector or charge radius, $\sqrt{\langle r_V^2\rangle} = 0.6603(5)(4)\text{fm}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical as…
We argue that the minimal chiral background for the two-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon interaction has nowadays a rather firm conceptual basis, which entitles it to become a standard ingredient of any modern potential. In order to facilitate applications, we present a parametrized version of a configuration space potential derived previously. We then use it to assess the phenomenological contents of some existing NN potentials.
Recently, the RHICf Collaboration measured the transverse single-spin asymmetries of the very forward neutral pion in polarized $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV, produced at large pseudorapidity ($η\gtrsim 6$). The data show large asymmetries both in longitudinal momentum fraction $x_F$ and transverse momentum $p_T$ at $p_T<1\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$. Employing baryonic triple Regge exchanges, we describe the complete RHICf data for the first time and show that the neutral pion production at low $p_T$ can be interpreted as a diffractive one.
We point out that the $Δπ$ component of the nucleon wave function is vital to the interpretation of the recent H1 data for leading baryon production. While the $n/p$ ratio is equal to two with the $Nπ$ component alone, the inclusion of the $Δπ$ component brings this ratio very near to unity, as observed in the experiment. This result demonstrates that pion exchange can not only account for leading neutron but also for a large fraction of the leading proton production.
We analyze s-wave pion-nucleon scattering in a unitarized chiral effective Lagrangian including all dimension two contact terms. We find that both the S11(1535) and the S11(1650) are dynamically generated, but the S31(1620) is not. We further discuss the structure of these dynamically generated resonances.
We discuss the possible power counting schemes that can be applied in the effective field theory description of heavy meson molecules, such as the X(3872) or the recently discovered Zb(10610) and Zb(10650) states. We argue that the effect of coupled channels is suppressed by at least two orders in the effective field theory expansion, meaning that they can be safely ignored at lowest order. The role of the one pion exchange potential between the heavy mesons, and in particular the tensor force, is also analyzed. By using techniques developed in atomic physics for handling power-law singular po…
A chiral pion-nucleon amplitude supplemented by the HJS subthreshold coefficients is used to calculate the the long range part of the two-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon potential. In our expressions the HJS coefficients factor out, allowing a clear identification of the origin of the various contributions. A discussion of the configuration space behaviour of the loop integrals that determine the potential is presented, with emphasis on cancellations associated with chiral symmetry. The profile function for the scalar-isoscalar component of the potential is produced and shown to disagree with th…
We revisit the question of the contributions of two-photon exchange with $Δ(1232)$ excitation to the electron-proton scattering in a hadronic model. Three improvements over the previous calculations are made, namely, correct vertex function for $γN\rightarrowΔ$, realistic $γNΔ$ form factors, and coupling constants. The discrepancy between the values of $R\equiv μ_p G_E/G_M$ extracted from Rosenbluth technique and polarization transfer method can be reasonably accounted for if the data of Andivahis {\it et al.} \cite{Andivahis94} are analyzed. However, substantial discrepancy remains if the dat…
The contribution of the box and crossed two-pion-exchange diagrams to proton-proton scattering at 90$^{\circ}_{c.m.}$ is calculated in the laboratory momentum range up to 12 GeV/c. Relativistic form factors related to the nucleon and pion size and representing the pion source distribution based on the quark structure of the hadronic core are included at each vertex of the pion-nucleon interaction. These form factors depend on the four-momenta of the exchanged pions and scattering nucleons. Feynman-diagram amplitudes calculated without form factors are checked against those derived from dispers…
We calculate the parity-violating nucleon-nucleon potential in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory up to the next-to-next-to-leading order. The one-pion exchange comes in the leading order and the next-to-next-to-leading order consists of two-pion-exchange and the two-nucleon contact terms. In order to investigate the effect of the higher order contributions, we calculate the parity-violating asymmetry in $\vec{n} p \to d γ$ at the threshold. The one-pion dominates the physical observable and the two-pion contribution is about or less than 10% of the one-pion contribution.
We evaluate the two pion exchange contribution to the nucleon-nucleon potential in configuration space using a "minimal chiral model" containing only pions and nucleons. We argue that this model has nowadays a rather firm conceptual basis, which entitles it to become a standard ingredient of any modern potential. The main features of this model is that the scalar-isoscalar component of the interaction is relatively small, due to cancellations between large terms, and fails to reproduce the intermediate range attraction in the central channel. We show that chiral symmetry is the responsible for…
Based on the simple phenomenological $σππ$, $σN N$ and $ππγ$ interactions, we estimate the $σ$ exchange effect in the Lamb shift of muonic hydrogen. We at first calculate the effective couplings of $σμμ$ by two photons and two pions exchange, then calculate the corresponding corrections to the energy shift of the 2S/2P states of muonic hydrogen. We find the correction to the energy shift of 2S state is about -14$μ$eV by the current used parameters, which is about $44\%$ of the usual two photons exchange contribution, and is larger than the current experimental precision, and should be consider…
In view of ongoing experimental activities to determine the pion polarizabilities, we have started to recalculate the available two-loop expressions in the framework of chiral perturbation theory, because they have never been checked before. We make use of the chiral Lagrangian at order p^6 now available, and of improved techniques to evaluate the two-loop diagrams. Here, we present the result for the neutral pions. The cross section for the reaction gamma+gamma->pi0+pi0 agrees with the earlier calculation within a fraction of a percent. We present analytic results for the dipole and quadrupol…
We use standard distorted wave theory techniques and dimensional regularization to find out solutions of the nucleon-nucleon Lippman--Schwinger equation with a kernel determined by the Weinberg's next-to-leading potential, which consists of one--pion exchange and additional contact terms with derivatives. Though for simplicity, we restrict the discussion to the $^1S_0$ channel and to contact terms containing up to two derivatives, the generalization to higher waves and/or number of derivatives is straightforward. The undetermined low energy constants emerging out of the renormalization procedu…
In extended technicolor (ETC) theories, while the sideways ETC boson exchange decreases the width $Γ_b \equiv Γ(Z\rightarrow b \bar{b})$, the flavor-diagonal ETC boson exchange tends to increase it, and the ETC-corrected $R_b \equiv Γ_b / Γ_{\mbox{\footnotesize had}}$ value could agree with recent measurements. The $τ$ asymmetry parameter may also increase in a way consistent with experiment. The weak-interaction $ρ$ parameter receives a correction from diagonal ETC exchange which is just barely acceptable by experiments.
A dynamical investigation of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction by using the resonating group method (RGM) in a chiral SU(3) quark model has been revisited. The considered quark-quark interaction includes, besides the one-gluon exchange (OGE) and the phenomenological confinement potential, the nonet scalar and pseudoscalar meson exchanges derived from the spontaneous SU(3) chiral symmetry breaking. The physical consistency requirement that the wave functions of single baryons satisfy the minimums of the Hamiltonian has been strictly imposed in determination of the model parameters. The calcu…
