We consider the problem of picking a physically motivated vacuum state on a spherically symmetric spacetime with an extra conformal Killing vector, as opposed to an extra Killing vector as in the Schwarzschild case. Considering a conformal symmetry instead of a symmetry allows us to consider spacetimes that are dynamical and not static (like Schwarzschild). The extra conformal symmetry allows us to calculate the response of particle detectors however. We look at the specific example of a self-similar LTB spacetime that represents a spherically symmetric but inhomogeneous cosmology. We remark that the above procedure might be applied to a spherically symmetric collapse solution that represents black hole formation so that one can calculate the detailed spectrum of Hawking radiation during a collapse.
In this paper, Killing vectors of spherically spacetimes have been evaluated in the context of teleparallel theory of gravitation. Further, we investigate the Killing vectors of the Friedmann metrics. It is found that for static spherically spacetimes the number of Killing vectors turn out to be \emph{seven} while for the Friedmann models, we obtain \emph{six} teleparallel Killing vectors. The results are then compared with those of General Relativity. We conclude that both of these descriptions of gravity do not provide the consistent results in general. However, these results may coincide un…
In this paper, we find all the Conformal Killing Vectors (CKVs) and their Lie Algebra for the recently reported [cqg1] spherically symmetric, shear-free separable metric spacetimes with non-vanishing energy or heat flux. We also solve the geodesic equatios of motion for the spacetime under consideration.
The gravitational collapse of a spherical distribution, in a class of f(R) theories of gravity, where f(R) is power function of R, is discussed. The spacetime is assumed to admit a homothetic Killing vector. In the collapsing modes, some of the situations indeed hit a singularity, but they are all covered with an apparent horizon. Some peculiar cases are observed where the collapsing body settles to a constant radius at a given value of the radial coordinate.
A new class of conserved currents, describing non-gravitational energy-momentum density, is presented. The proposed currents do not require the existence of a (timelike) Killing vector, and are not restricted to spherically symmetric spacetimes (or similar ones, in which the Kodama vector can be defined). They are based instead on almost-Killing vectors, which could in principle be defined on generic spacetimes. We provide local arguments, based on energy density profiles in highly simplified (stationary, rigidly-rotating) star models, which confirm the physical interest of these 'almost-Killi…
Killing-Yano one forms (duals of Killing vector fields) of a class of spherically symmetric space-times characterized by four functions are derived in a unified and exhaustive way. For well-known space-times such as those of Minkowski, Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom, Robertson-Walker and several forms of de Sitter, these forms arise as special cases in a natural way. Besides its two well-known forms, four more forms of de Sitter space-time are also established with ten independent Killing vector fields for which four different time evolution regimes can explicitly be specified by the symmet…
We present two recently obtained solutions of the Einstein equations with spherical symmetry and one additional Killing vector, describing colliding null dust streams.
We derive matter collineations for some static spherically symmetric spacetimes and compare the results with Killing, Ricci and Curvature symmetries. We conclude that matter and Ricci collineations are not, in general, the same.
When spacetime torsion is present, geodesics and autoparallels generically do not coincide. In this work, the well-known method that uses Killing vectors to solve the geodesic equations is generalized for autoparallels. The main definition is that of T-Killing vectors: vector fields such that, when their index is lowered with the metric, have vanishing symmetric derivative when acted with a torsionfull and metric-compatible derivative. The main property of T-Killing vectors is that their contraction with the autoparallels' tangents are constant along these curves. As an example, in a static an…
Killing-Yano (KY) two and three forms of a class of spherically symmetric space-times that includes the well-known Minkowski, Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom, Robertson-Walker and six different forms of de Sitter space-times as special cases are derived in a unified and exhaustive manner. It is directly proved that while the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom space-times do not accept any KY 3-form and they accept only one 2-form, the Robertson-Walker space-time admits four KY 2-forms and only one KY 3-form. Maximal number of KY-forms are obtained for Minkowski and all known forms of de Si…
We investigate asymptotic symmetries regularly defined on spherically symmetric Killing horizons in the Einstein theory with or without the cosmological constant. Those asymptotic symmetries are described by asymptotic Killing vectors, along which the Lie derivatives of perturbed metrics vanish on a Killing horizon. We derive the general form of asymptotic Killing vectors and find that the group of the asymptotic symmetries consists of rigid O(3) rotations of a horizon two-sphere and supertranslations along the null direction on the horizon, which depend arbitrarily on the null coordinate as w…
Spherically symmetric solutions admitting a homothetic Killing vector field (HKVF) either orthogonal, $η_{\bot}$, or parallel,$η_{||}$, to the 4-velocity vector field, $u^a$, are studied. New self-similar solution of Einstein's field equation is found in the case when HKVF is in a general form. Some physical properties of the obtained solution are examined.
Two components of spherically symmetric, inhomogeneous dust penetrating each other are introduced as a generalization of the well-known Tolman-Bondi dust solution. The field equations of this model are formulated and general properties are discussed. inhomogeneous Special solutions with additional symmetries - an extra Killing- or homothetic vector - and their matching to the corresponding Tolman-Bondi solution are investigated.
By studying the Hawking radiation of the most general static spherically symmetric black hole arising from scalar and Dirac particles tunnelling, we find the Hawking temperature is invariant in the general coordinate representation (\ref{arbitrary1}), which satisfies two conditions: a) its radial coordinate transformation is regular at the event horizon; and b) there is a time-like Killing vector.
We show that two stationary, asymptotically flat vacuum black holes in 5 dimensions with two commuting axial symmetries are identical if and only if their masses, angular momenta, and their ``rod structures'' coincide. We also show that the horizon must be topologically either a 3-sphere, a ring, or a Lens-space. Our argument is a generalization of constructions of Morisawa and Ida (based in turn on key work of Maison) who considered the spherical case, combined with basic arguments concerning the nature of the factor manifold of symmetry orbits.
We impose perfect fluid concept along with slow expansion approximation to derive new solutions which, considering non-static spherically symmetric metrics, can be treated as Black Holes (BHs). We will refer to these solutions as Quasi BHs. Mathematical and physical features such as Killing vectors, singularities, and mass have been studied. Their horizons and thermodynamic properties have also been investigated. In addition, relationship with other related works (including McVittie's) are described.
We study the two-dimensional (2D) dilatonic model describing a massless scalar field minimally coupled to the spherically reduced Einstein-Hilbert gravity. The general solution of this model is given in the case when a Killing vector is present. When interpreted in four dimensions, the solution describes either a static or a homogeneous collision of incoming and outgoing null dust streams with spherical symmetry. The homogeneous Universe is closed.
We present a brief overview of black hole spacetimes admitting Killing-Yano tensors. In vacuum these include Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metrics and certain black brane solutions. In the presence of matter fields, (conformal) Killing-Yano symmetries are known to exist for the Plebanski-Demianski solution and (trivially) for any spacetime with spherical symmetry. Special attention is devoted to generalized Killing-Yano tensors of black holes in minimal gauged supergravity. Several aspects directly related to the existence of Killing-Yano tensors, such as the Kerr-Schild form, algebraic type of spacetimes, a…
Self-similar spacetimes are of importance to cosmology and to gravitational collapse problems. We show that self-similarity or the existence of a homothetic Killing vector field for spherically symmetric spacetimes implies the separability of the spacetime metric in terms of the co-moving coordinates and that the metric is, uniquely, the one recently reported in [cqg1]. The spacetime, in general, has non-vanishing energy-flux and shear. The spacetime admits matter with any equation of state.
Null shells are a useful geometric construction to study the propagation of infinitesimally thin concentrations of massless particles or impulsive waves. After recalling the necessary and sufficient conditions obtained in [28] that allow for the matching of two spacetimes with null embedded hypersurfaces as boundaries, we will address the problem of matching across Killing horizons of zero order in the case when the symmetry generators are to be identified. The results are substantially different depending on whether the boundaries are non-degenerate or degenerate, and contain or not fixed poi…
It is known that spherically symmetric static spacetimes admit a foliation by °at hypersurfaces. Such foliations have explicitly been constructed for some spacetimes, using different approaches, but none of them have proved or even discussed the uniqueness of these foliations. The issue of uniqueness becomes more important due to suitability of °at foliations for studying black hole physics. Here °at spherically symmetric spacelike hy- persurfaces are obtained by a direct method. It is found that spherically symmetric static spacetimes admit °at spherically symmetric hypersurfaces, and that th…
It seems to be expected, that a horizon of a quasi-local type, like a Killing or an isolated horizon, by analogy with a globally defined event horizon, should be unique in some open neighborhood in the spacetime, provided the vacuum Einstein or the Einstein-Maxwell equations are satisfied. The aim of our paper is to verify whether that intuition is correct. If one can extend a so called Kundt metric, in such a way that its null, shear-free surfaces have spherical spacetime sections, the resulting spacetime is foliated by so called non-expanding horizons. The obstacle is Kundt's constraint indu…
We argue that a particular spacetime, a spherically symmetric spacetime with hyper-surface orthogonal, radial, homothetic Killing vector, is a physically meaningful spacetime that describes the problem of spherical gravitational collapse in its full "physical" generality.
We investigate the conformal geometry of spherically symmetric spacetimes in general without specifying the form of the matter distribution. The general conformal Killing symmetry is obtained subject to a number of integrability conditions. Previous results relating to static spacetimes are shown to be a special case of our solution. The general inheriting conformal symmetry vector, which maps fluid flow lines conformally onto fluid flow lines, is generated and the integrability conditions are shown to be satisfied. We show that there exists a hypersurface orthogonal conformal Killing vector i…
Binary black hole spacetimes with a helical Killing vector, which are discussed as an approximation for the early stage of a binary system, are studied in a projection formalism. In this setting the four dimensional Einstein equations are equivalent to a three dimensional gravitational theory with a $SL(2,\mathbb{C})/SO(1,1)$ sigma model as the material source. The sigma model is determined by a complex Ernst equation. 2+1 decompositions of the 3-metric are used to establish the field equations on the orbit space of the Killing vector. The two Killing horizons of spherical topology which chara…
It is well-known \cite{mtbh} that {\em all} black hole solutions of General Relativity are of Petrov-type D. It may thus be expected that the spacetime of {\em physically realizable} spherical gravitational collapse is also of Petrov-type D. We show that a radially homothetic spacetime, {\em ie}, a spherically symmetric spacetime with hyper-surface orthogonal, radial, homothetic Killing vector, is of Petrov-type D. As has been argued in \cite{prl1}, it is a spacetime of {\em physically realizable} spherical collapse.
Spherically, plane, or hyperbolically symmetric spacetimes with an additional hypersurface orthogonal Killing vector are often called ``static'' spacetimes even if they contain regions where the Killing vector is non-timelike. It seems to be widely believed that an energy-momentum tenor for a matter field compatible with these spacetimes in general relativity is of the Hawking-Ellis type I everywhere. We show in arbitrary $n(\ge 3)$ dimensions that, contrary to popular belief, a matter field on a Killing horizon is not necessarily of type I but can be of type II. Such a type-II matter field on…
We consider a spherically symmetric, Petrov-type D, spacetime with hyper-surface orthogonal, radial, homothetic Killing vector. In this work, some general properties of this spacetime for non-singular and non-degenerate data are presented. We also present the source-free electromagnetic fields in this spacetime. We then discuss general astrophysical relevance of the results obtained for this spacetime.
We carry on a general study on non--static spherically symmetric fluids admitting a conformal Killing vector (CKV). Several families of exact analytical solutions are found for different choices of the CKV, in both, the dissipative and the adiabatic regime. To specify the solutions, besides the fulfillment of the junction conditions on the boundary of the fluid distribution, different conditions are imposed, such as vanishing complexity factor and quasi--homologous evolution. A detailed analysis of the obtained solutions, its prospective applications to astrophysical scenarios, as well as alte…
The aim of this paper is to present a governing equation for first order axial metric perturbations of general, not necessarily static, spherically symmetric spacetimes. Under the non-restrictive assumption of axisymmetric perturbations, the governing equation is shown to be a two-dimensional wave equation where the wave function serves as a twist potential for the axisymmetry generating Killing vector. This wave equation can be written in a form which is formally a very simple generalization of the Regge-Wheeler equation governing the axial perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole, but in …
We accurately compute the scalar 2-curvature, the Weyl scalars, associated quasi-local spin, mass and higher multipole moments on marginally trapped surfaces in numerical 3+1 simulations. To determine the quasi-local quantities we introduce a new method which requires a set of invariant surface integrals, allowing for surface grids of a few hundred points only. The new technique circumvents solving the Killing equation and is also an alternative to approximate Killing vector fields. We apply the method to a perturbed non-axisymmetric black hole ringing down to Kerr and compare the quasi-local …
In a static spacetime, the Killing time can be used to measure the time required for signals or objects to propagate between two of its orbits. By further restricting to spherically symmetric cases, one obtains a natural association between these orbits and timelike lines in Minkowski space. We prove a simple theorem to the effect that in any spacetime satisfying the weak energy condition the above signaling time is, in this sense, no faster than that for a corresponding signal in Minkowski space. The theorem uses a ormalization of Killing time appropriate to an observer at infinity. We then b…
Static spherically symmetric black holes and particle like solutions with self interacting minimally coupled scalar field ϕ are analyzed. They are asymptotically flat or anti-de Sitter (AdS). We express them in terms of a single function ρ which undergoes simple conditions. If ϕ is nontrivial the ADM mass M has to be positive. No-hair theorems are generalized to the AdS asymptotic. For both asymptotics the Killing horizon is nondegenerate and its radius cannot be bigger than 2M. Derivatives of ρ at singularity determine properties of admissible potentials V(ϕ) as regularity, boundedness and be…
New solutions for $(2+1)$-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell space-time are found for a static spherically symmetric charged fluid distribution with the additional condition of allowing conformal killing vectors (CKV). We discuss physical properties of the fluid parameters. Moreover, it is shown that the model actually represents two structures, namely (i) Gravastar as an alternative of black hole and (ii) Electromagnetic Mass model depending on the nature of the equation state of the fluid. Here the gravitational mass originates from electromagnetic field alone. The solutions are matched with the e…
We determine the asymptotic symmetry group of Killing horizons by choosing Gaussian null coordinates in the neighbourhood of the horizon and boundary conditions that respect the leading order terms in the metric. The analysis divides naturally into the two cases of subextremal and extremal horizons. In general, we find rather involved asymptotic symmetry generators that nevertheless involve supertranslations and Killing vectors on the compact horizon. The most striking observation is the difference in the dependence on the coordinate along the horizon; we relate this to the redshift effect for…
In this paper I show that the Newman-Tamburino spherical metrics always admit a Killing vector, correcting a claim by Collinson and French, (1967 J. Math. Phys. 8 701) and also admit a homothety. A similar calculation is given for the limit of the Newman-Tamburino cylindrical metric.
An off-shell generalization of the Abbott-Deser-Tekin (ADT) conserved charge was recently proposed by Kim et al. They achieved this by introducing off-shell Noether currents and potentials. In this paper, we construct the crucial off-shell Noether current by the variation of the Bianchi identity for the expression of motion equation, with the help of the property of Killing vector. Our Noether current, which contains an additional term that is just one half of the Lie derivative of a surface term with respect to the Killing vector, takes a different form in comparison with the one in their wor…
In this paper we discuss matter inheritance collineations by giving a complete classification of spherically symmetric static spacetimes by their matter inheritance symmetries. It is shown that when the energy-momentum tensor is degenerate, most of the cases yield infinite dimensional matter inheriting symmetries. It is worth mentioning here that two cases provide finite dimensional matter inheriting vectors even for the degenerate case. The non-degenerate case provides finite dimensional matter inheriting symmetries. We obtain different constraints on the energy-momentum tensor in each case. …
The hierarchies of both Lovelock gravity and power-Yang-Mills field are combined through gravity in a single theory. In static, spherically symmetric ansatz exact particular integrals are obtained in all higher dimensions. The advantage of such hierarchies is the possibility of choosing coefficients, which are arbitrary otherwise, to cast solutions into tractable forms. To our knowledge the solutions constitute the most general spherically symmetric metrics that incorporate complexities both of Lovelock and Yang-Mills hierarchies within the common context. A large portion of our general class …
The time independent spherically symmetric solutions of General Relativity (GR) coupled to a dynamical unit timelike vector are studied. We find there is a three-parameter family of solutions with this symmetry. Imposing asymptotic flatness restricts to two parameters, and requiring that the aether be aligned with the timelike Killing field further restricts to one parameter, the total mass. These "static aether" solutions are given analytically up to solution of a transcendental equation. The positive mass solutions have spatial geometry with a minimal area 2-sphere, inside of which the area …
We consider the structure of halos of the axionic dark matter, which surround massive relativistic objects with static spherically symmetric gravitational field and monopole-type magneto-electric fields. We work with the model of pseudoscalar field with the extended periodic potential, which depends on additional arguments proportional to the moduli of the Killing vectors; in our approach they play the roles of model guiding functions. The covariant model of the axion field with this modified potential is equipped with the extended formalism of the Killing vector fields, which is established i…
The TOV equation appears as the relativistic counterpart of the classical condition for hydrostatic equilibrium. In the present work we aim at showing that a generalised TOV equation also characterises the equilibrium of models endowed with other symmetries besides spherical. We apply the dual null formalism to spacetimes with two dimensional spherical, planar and hyperbolic symmetries with a perfect fluid as the source. We also assume a Killing vector field orthogonal to the surfaces of symmetry, which gives us static solutions, in the timelike Killing field case, and homogeneous dynamical so…
We present two complementary approaches for determining the reference for the covariant Hamiltonian boundary term quasi-local energy and test them on spherically symmetric spacetimes. On the one hand, we isometrically match the 2-surface and extremize the energy. This can be done in two ways, which we call programs I (without constraint) and II (with additional constraints). On the other hand, we match the orthonormal 4-frames of the dynamic and the reference spacetimes. Then, if we further specify the observer by requiring the reference displacement to be the timelike Killing vector of the re…
Requiring that the matter fields are subject to the dominant energy condition, we establish the lower bound $(4π)^{-1} κ{\cal A}$ for the total mass $M$ of a static, spherically symmetric black hole spacetime. (${\cal A}$ and $κ$ denote the area and the surface gravity of the horizon, respectively.) Together with the fact that the Komar integral provides a simple relation between $M - (4π)^{-1} κA$ and the strong energy condition, this enables us to prove that the Schwarzschild metric represents the only static, spherically symmetric black hole solution of a selfgravitating matter model satisf…
We provide a set of exact spherically symmetric solutions describing the interior of a relativistic star under f(T) modified gravity. To tackle the problem with lucidity we also assume the existence of a conformal Killing vector field within this f(T) gravity. We study several cases of interest to explore physically valid features of the solutions.
We solve for all Szekeres metrics that have a single Killing vector. For quasi hyperboloidal ($ε= -1$) metrics, we find that translational symmetries are possible, but only in metrics that have shell crossings somewhere, while metrics that can be made free of shell crossings only permit rotations. The quasi planar metrics ($ε= 0$) either have no Killing vectors or they admit full planar symmetry. Single symmetries in quasi spherical metrics ($ε= +1$) are all rotations. The rotations correspond to a known family of axially symmetric metrics, which for each $ε$ value, are equivalent to each othe…
