In this paper, we studied the doped Z2 topological spin liquid of the toric-code model. We found that the doped holes become supersymmetric particles. The ground state of the doped Z2 topological spin liquid becomes new matters of quantum states - supersymmetric Bose-Einstein condensation or supersymmetric superfluid. As a result, this system provides a unique example of manipulatable supersymmetric many-body system.
The Chamon model is an exactly solvable spin Hamiltonian exhibiting nontrivial fracton order. In this work, we dissect two distinct aspects of the model. First, we show that it exhibits an emergent fractonic gauge theory coupled to a fermionic subsystem symmetry-protected topological state under four stacks of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ planar symmetries. Second, we show that the Chamon model hosts 4-foliated fracton order by describing an entanglement renormalization group transformation that exfoliates four separate stacks of 2D toric codes from the bulk system.
The search for novel unconventional superconductors is a central topic of modern condensed matter physics. Similar to other Mott insulators, Shastry-Sutherland (SSL) systems are predicted to become superconducting when chemically doped. This makes SrCu2(BO3)2, an experimental realization of SSL model, a suitable candidate and understanding of the doping effects in it very important. Here we report doping-induced emergent states in Mg-doped SrCu2(BO3)2, which remain stable up to high magnetic fields. Using four complementary magnetometry techniques and theoretical simulations, a rich impurity-i…
We study the pyrochlore series (Eu$_{1-x}$Bi$_x$)$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ for $ 0 \leq x \leq 1$. We show that for small $x$, the lattice undergoes an anomalous contraction but the all-in/all-out and metal-to-insulator transitions remain robust, and the resistivity approaches a $1/T$ dependence at low-T, suggesting proximity to the Weyl semimetallic phase, as previously predicted theoretically. At the boundary between Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Bi$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ a qualitatively different ground state emerges, which is characterized by its unusual metallic behavior and absence of magnetic ordering at least d…
We present determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the hole-doped single-band Hubbard-Holstein model on a square lattice, to investigate how quasiparticles emerge when doping a Mott insulator (MI) or a Peierls insulator (PI). The MI regime at large Hubbard interaction $U$ and small relative electron-phonon coupling strength $λ$ is quickly suppressed upon doping, by drawing spectral weight from the upper Hubbard band and shifting the lower Hubbard band towards the Fermi level, leading to a metallic state with emergent quasiparticles at the Fermi level. On the other hand, the PI regime at…
Artificially created two-dimensional (2D) interfaces or structures are ideal for seeking exotic phase transitions due to their highly tunable carrier density and interfacially enhanced many-body interactions. Here, we report the discovery of a metal-insulator transition (MIT) and an emergent gapped phase in the metal-semiconductor interface that is created in 2H-MoTe$_2$ via alkali-metal deposition. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we found that the electron-phonon coupling is strong at the interface as characterized by a clear observation of replica shake-off bands. Such stron…
Spontaneous charge ordering occurring in correlated systems may be considered as a possible route to generate effective lattice structures with unconventional couplings. For this purpose we investigate the phase diagram of doped extended Hubbard models on two lattices: (i) the honeycomb lattice with on-site $U$ and nearest-neighbor $V$ Coulomb interactions at $3/4$ filling ($n=3/2$) and (ii) the triangular lattice with on-site $U$, nearest-neighbor $V$, and next-nearest-neighbor $V'$ Coulomb interactions at $3/8$ filling ($n=3/4$). We consider various approaches including mean-field approximat…
We have utilized neutron powder diffraction to probe the crystal structure of layered Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ near the half doping composition of $x=$0.46 over the temperature range of 2 to 600K. Our measurements show evidence of a dynamic transition in the motion of Na-ions at 300K which coincides with the onset of a near zero thermal expansion in the in-plane lattice constants. The effect of the Na-ordering on the CoO$_{2}$ layer is reflected in the octahedral distortion of the two crystallographically inequivalent Co-sites and is evident even at high temperatures. We find evidence of a weak charg…

We report a study of the topological Hall effect (THE) in Fe-doped MnSi and compare with results from pure MnSi under pressure. We find that Fe doping increases the THE, indicating an enhancement of the magnitude of the emergent gauge field. This is consistent with the concurrent reduction in the length scale of the skyrmion lattice. For both pressurized and doped samples, we calculate the emergent magnetic field based on the size of the measured THE, and compare it with a theoretical upper-bound. We find that the ratio of these two remains more or less constant with pressure or Fe doping, but…
It is widely believed that high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates emerges from doped Mott insulators. The physics of the parent state seems deceivingly simple: The hopping of the electrons from site to site is prohibited because their on-site Coulomb repulsion U is larger than the kinetic energy gain t. When doping these materials by inserting a small percentage of extra carriers, the electrons become mobile but the strong correlations from the Mott state are thought to survive; inhomogeneous electronic order, a mysterious pseudogap and, eventually, superconductivity appear. How th…
We study a two-dimensional spin model obtained by "Higgsing" the rank-2 U(1) lattice gauge theory (LGT) with scalar or vector charges on the L_x * L_y square lattice under the periodic boundary condition (PBC). There are p degrees of freedom per orbital and three orbitals per unit cell in the spin model. The resulting spin model is a stabilizer code consisting of three mutually commuting projectors that are, in turn, obtained by Higgsing the mutually commuting Gauss's law operators and the magnetic field operators in the underlying LGT. The spin model thus obtained is exactly solvable, with th…

Metal-to-insulator transitions (MIT) can be driven by a number of different mechanisms, each resulting in a different type of insulator -- Change in chemical potential can induce a transition from a metal to a band insulator; strong correlations can drive a metal into a Mott insulator with an energy gap; an Anderson transition, on the other hand, due to disorder leads to a localized insulator without a gap in the spectrum. Here we report the discovery of an alternative route for MIT driven by the creation of a network of narrow channels. Transport data on Pt substituted for Ti in TiSe$_2$ show…
We present a method of extracting information about the topological order from the ground state of a strongly correlated two-dimensional system computed with the infinite projected entangled pair state (iPEPS). For topologically ordered systems, the iPEPS wrapped on a torus becomes a superposition of degenerate, locally indistinguishable ground states. Projectors in the form of infinite matrix product operators (iMPO) onto states with well-defined anyon flux are used to compute topological $S$ and $T$ matrices (encoding mutual- and self-statistics of emergent anyons). The algorithm is shown to…

It is a widely accepted view that the interplay of spin- and charge-degrees of freedom in doped antiferromagnets (AFMs) gives rise to the rich physics of high-temperature superconductors. Nevertheless, it remains unclear how effective low-energy degrees of freedom and the corresponding field theories emerge from microscopic models, including the $t-J$ and Hubbard Hamiltonians. A promising view comprises that the charge carriers have a rich internal parton structure on intermediate scales, but the interplay of the emergent partons with collective magnon excitations of the surrounding AFM remain…

We have studied the ground state properties of Hubbard model on long six-leg square cylinders with doped hole concentration per site $5.55\% \leq δ\leq 12.5\%$ using density-matrix renormalization group. By keeping a large number of states for long system sizes, we find that the nature of the ground state is remarkably sensitive to the presence of next-nearest-neighbor electron hopping $t'$. In the positive $t'$ side, we find a robust $d$-wave superconducting (SC) phase characterized by coexisting quasi-long-range SC and charge density wave (CDW) correlations. Without $t'$ the ground state for…
Arrays of Rydberg atoms constitute a highly tunable, strongly interacting venue for the pursuit of exotic states of matter. We develop a new strategy for accessing a family of fractionalized phases known as quantum spin liquids in two-dimensional Rydberg arrays. We specifically use effective field theory methods to study arrays assembled from Rydberg chains tuned to an Ising phase transition that famously hosts emergent fermions propagating within each chain. This highly entangled starting point allows us to naturally access spin liquids familiar from Kitaev's honeycomb model, albeit from an e…
Fractional Chern insulators are theoretically predicted states of electronic matter with emergent topological order. They exhibit the same universal properties as the fractional quantum Hall effect, but dispose of the need to apply a strong magnetic field. However, despite intense theoretical work, an experimental realization for these exotic states of matter is still lacking. Here we show that doped graphene turns into a fractional Chern insulator, when irradiated with high-intensity circularly polarized light. We derive the effective steady state band structure of light-driven graphene using…
We reinvestigate a doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator based on the slave-fermion approach of the t-J model, where antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and doped holes are described by bosonic spinons and fermionic holons, respectively. Earlier studies have shown that an effective field theory for the doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator is given by a non-relativistic fermion (holon) U(1) gauge theory for charge dynamics and a relativistic boson (spinon) U(1) gauge theory for spin dynamics, thus allowing an anomalous metallic phase where bosonic spinons are gapped away from an antiferromag…
Superconductivity with a remarkably high $T_c$ has recently been found in Sr-doped NdNiO$_2$ thin films. While this system bears strong similarities to the cuprates, some differences, such as a weaker antiferromagnetic exchange coupling and possible high-spin moments on the doped Ni sites have been pointed out. Here, we investigate the effect of Hund coupling and crystal field splitting in a simple model system and argue that a multiorbital description of nickelate superconductors is warranted, especially in the strongly hole-doped regime. We then look at this system from the viewpoint of the …
We exhibit an exactly solvable example of a SU(2) symmetric Majorana spin liquid phase, in which quenched disorder leads to random-singlet phenomenology. More precisely, we argue that a strong-disorder fixed point controls the low temperature susceptibility $χ(T)$ of an exactly solvable $S=1/2$ model on the decorated honeycomb lattice with quenched bond disorder and/or vacancies, leading to $χ(T) = {\mathcal C}/T+ {\mathcal D} T^{α(T) - 1}$ where $α(T) \rightarrow 0$ as $T \rightarrow 0$. The first term is a Curie tail that represents the emergent response of vacancy-induced spin textures spre…
The simultaneous presence of sizable spin-orbit interactions and electron correlations in iridium oxides has led to predictions of novel ground states including Dirac semimetals, Kitaev spin liquids, and superconductivity. Electron and hole doping studies of spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 are being intensively pursued due to extensive parallels with the La2CuO4 parent compound of Cuprate superconductors. In particular, the mechanism of charge doping associated with replacement of Ir with Rh ions remains controversial with profound consequences for the interpretation of electronic s…
The physical realization of $\mathbb Z_2$ topological order as encountered in the paradigmatic toric code has proven to be an elusive goal. We predict that this phase of matter can be realized in a two-dimensional array of Rydberg atoms placed on the ruby lattice, at specific values of the Rydberg blockade radius. First, we show that the blockade model -- also known as a `PXP' model -- realizes a monomer-dimer model on the kagome lattice with a single-site kinetic term. This can be interpreted as a $\mathbb Z_2$ gauge theory whose dynamics is generated by monomer fluctuations. We obtain its ph…

In this paper, we propose some new strongly correlated gapless states (or critical states) of spin-1/2 electrons in 1+1-dimensions, such as doped anti-ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Ising chain. We find doped anti-ferromagnetic Ising chain to be a different metallic phase from the doped ferromagnetic Ising chain, despite the two have identical symmetry. The doped anti-ferromagnetic Ising chain has a finite energy gap for all charge-1 fermionic excitations even without pairing caused by attractive interactions, resembling the pseudo-gap phase of underdoped high Tc superconductors. Applying a transverse…
We consider magic-angle graphene in the doping regime around charge neutrality and study the connection between a recently proposed inter-valley coherent insulator at zero doping and the neighboring superconducting domes. The magic-angle graphene continuum model has an emergent U(1) valley-charge conservation symmetry, and an emergent SU(2) symmetry corresponding to opposite spin rotations in the two valleys. The inter-valley coherent insulator spontaneously breaks both these emergent symmetries, and as a result has four Goldstone modes which couple to doped charge carriers. We derive the effe…
Unravelling the nature of doping-induced transition between a Mott insulator and a weakly correlated metal is crucial to understanding novel emergent phases in strongly correlated materials. For this purpose, we study the evolution of spectral properties upon doping Mott insulating states, by utilizing the cluster perturbation theory on the Hubbard and t-J-like models. Specifically, a quasi-free dispersion crossing the Fermi level develops with small doping, and it eventually evolves into the most dominant feature at high doping levels. Although this dispersion is related to the free electron …
Concepts of information theory are increasingly used to characterize collective phenomena in condensed matter systems, such as the use of entanglement entropies to identify emergent topological order in interacting quantum many-body systems. Here we employ classical variants of these concepts, in particular Rényi entropies and their associated mutual information, to identify topological order in classical systems. Like for their quantum counterparts, the presence of topological order can be identified in such classical systems via a universal, subleading contribution to the prevalent volume an…
Constructing an effective field theory in terms of doped magnetic impurities (described by an O(3) vector model with a random mass term), itinerant electrons of spin-orbit coupled semiconductors (given by a Dirac theory with a relatively large mass term), and effective interactions between doped magnetic ions and itinerant electrons (assumed by an effective Zeeman coupling term), we perform the perturbative renormalization group analysis in the one-loop level based on the dimensional regularization technique. As a result, we find that the mass renormalization in dynamics of itinerant electrons…
