I will discuss how the non-vacuum, quark-antiquark Reggeon-exchange contribution to meson-meson elastic scattering, at high energy and low tranferred momentum, can be related to the path-integral of a certain Wilson-loop expectation value over the trajectories of the exchanged fermions. Making use of this representation, I will show how a linear Regge trajectory is obtained through gauge/gravity duality and the use of minimal surfaces.
The vertex for gluon emission during the splitting of a reggeized gluon into two is constructed in the framework of Lipatov effective action formalism. Its reduction to a pure transverse form for the diffractive amplitude gives the standard Bartels vertex plus an additional contribution corresponding to the emission from a pointlike splitting vertex. This additional contribution turns out to be given by a longitudinal integral divergent both in the ultraviolet and infrared. A certain specific recipe for this part, including the principal value prescription for the integration, allows to elimin…
We derive a nonperturbative expression for the non-vacuum, qqbar-Reggeon-exchange contribution to the meson-meson elastic scattering amplitude at high energy and low momentum transfer, in the framework of QCD. Describing the mesons in terms of colourless qqbar dipoles, the problem is reduced to the two-fermion-exchange contribution to the dipole-dipole scattering amplitudes, which is expressed as a path integral, over the trajectories of the exchanged fermions, of the expectation value of a certain Wilson loop. We also show how the resulting expression can be reconstructed from a corresponding…
We consider the description of reggeon amplitudes (Wilson lines form factors) in N=4 SYM within the framework of four dimensional ambitwistor string theory. The latter is used to derive scattering equations representation for reggeon amplitudes with multiple reggeized gluons present. It is shown, that corresponding tree-level string correlation function correctly reproduces previously obtained Grassmannian integral representation of reggeon amplitudes in N=4 SYM.
In this paper we present the all-loop conjecture for integrands of Wilson line form factors, also known as reggeon amplitudes, in N=4 SYM. In particular we present a new gluing operation in momentum twistor space used to obtain reggeon tree-level amplitudes and loop integrands starting from corresponding expressions for on-shell amplitudes. The introduced gluing procedure is used to derive BCFW recursions both for tree-level reggeon amplitudes and their loop integrands. In addition we provide predictions for reggeon loop integrands written in the basis of local integrals. As a check of the cor…
We compute the triple pomeron vertex from the Wilson line formalism, including both planar and non-planar contributions, and get perfect agreement with the result obtained in the Extended Generalized Logarithmic Approximation based on reggeon calculus.
We perform the analysis of quark-antiquark Reggeon exchange in meson-meson scattering, in the framework of the gauge/gravity correspondence in a confining background. On the gauge theory side, Reggeon exchange is described as quark-antiquark exchange in the t channel between fast projectiles. The corresponding amplitude is represented in terms of Wilson loops running along the trajectories of the constituent quarks and antiquarks. The paths of the exchanged fermions are integrated over, while the "spectator" fermions are dealt with in an eikonal approximation. On the gravity side, we follow a …
The appearance of the triangle graph infra-red axial anomaly in reduced quark loops contributing to QCD triple-regge interactions is studied. In a dispersion relation formalism, the anomaly can only be present in the contributions of unphysical triple discontinuities. In this paper an asymptotic discontinuity analysis is applied to high-order feynman diagrams to show that the anomaly does indeed occur in sufficiently high-order reggeized gluon interactions. The reggeon states involved must contain reggeized gluon combinations with the quantum numbers of the anomaly (winding-number) current. A …
Application of the effective action formalism is studied for processes in which the reggeons may split. It is shown that the gluon production on two centers is described by the contribution of the Reggeon-to-two-Reggeons-plus-Particle vertex supplemented by certain singular contributions from the double gluon exchange. The rules for longitudinal integrations are established from the comparison to perturbative QCD amplitude. Convenient expressions for application to the inclusive gluon production are derived.
We review recent progress on the calculation of scattering amplitudes in the high-energy limit. We start by illustrating the shockwave formalism, which allows one to calculate amplitudes as iterated solutions of rapidity evolution equations. We then focus on our recent results regarding $2\to 2$ parton scattering. We present the calculation of the imaginary part of the amplitude, at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy in the high-energy logarithms, formally to all orders, and in practice to 13 loops. We then discuss the computation of the real part of the amplitude at next-to-next-to-leading …
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence in a confining backgroundand the worldline formalism of gauge field theories,we compute scattering amplitudes with an exchange of quark andantiquark in the $t$-channel corresponding to Reggeon exchange. Itrequires going beyond the eikonal approximation, which was used when studying Pomeron exchange. The wordline path integral is evaluated through the determination of minimal surfaces and their boundaries by the saddle-point method at large gauge coupling g^2N_c. We find a Regge behaviour with linear Regge trajectories. The slope is related to the $q\bar q$ stat…
We review the present knowledge on the heavy quark interaction. The framework is the NRQCD effective theory and the interaction is expressed in terms of Wilson loop chromoelectric and chromomagnetic insertions.
Employing the Worldline casting of the Dosch-Simonov Stochastic Vacuum Model(SVM) for QCD, a simulated meson-meson scattering is studied in the Regge kinematical regime. The process is modelled in terms of the "helicoidal" Wilson contour first introduced by Janic and Peschanski in a related study based on an AdS/CFT-type approach. Using lattice supported estimations for the behavior of a two-point, field strength correlation function, as defined in the framework of the SVM, the reggeon slope and intercept are calculated in a semiclassical approximation. The resulting values are in good agreeme…
Starting from the NRQCD Lagrangian the heavy quark-antiquark potential is written in terms of field strength insertions on a static Wilson loop. The relevant matching coefficients are given at the present status of knowledge. The short-range, perturbatively dominated, behaviour of the spin-dependent terms is discussed.
The Born amplitudes for quasi-multi-Regge kinematics of produced gluons are constructed in accordance with the Feynman rules including apart from usual Yang-Mills vertices also an infinite number of induced vertices. The new vertices describe the interaction of physical gluons produced in direct channels with the reggeized gluons propagating in crossing channels. The nonlinear gauge invariant effective action reproducing these Feynman rules is constructed with the use of the Wilson contour integrals. After integrating over the physical degrees of freedom the reggeon action is derived.
I review the resummation formalism for organizing large logarithms in perturbative expansion of collinear subprocesses through the variation of Wilson lines off the light cone. A master equation is derived, which involves the evolution kernel resulting from this variation. It is then demonstrated that all the known single- and double-logarithm summations for a parton distribution function or a transverse-momentum-dependentparton distribution can be reproduced from the master equation by applying appropriate soft-gluon approximations to the evolution kernel. Moreover, jet substructures, informa…
We develop Wigner - Weyl formalism for the lattice models. For the definiteness we consider Wilson fermions in the presence of $U(1)$ gauge field. The given technique reduces calculation of the two point fermionic Green function to solution of the Groenewold equation. It relates Wigner transformation of the Green function with the Weyl symbol $Q_W$ of Wilson Dirac operator. We derive the simple expression for $Q_W$ in the presence of varying external $U(1)$ gauge field. Next, we solve the Groenewold equation to all orders in powers of the derivatives of $Q_W$. Thus the given technique allows t…
We introduce the concept of equivalence among Wilson actions. Applying the concept to a real scalar theory on a euclidean space, we derive the exact renormalization group transformation of K. G. Wilson, and give a simple proof of universality of the critical exponents at any fixed point of the exact renormalization group transformation. We also show how to reduce the original formalism of Wilson to the simplified formalism by J. Polchinski.
In a gauge theory, the gauge invariant Hilbert space is unchanged by the coupling to arbitrary local operators. In the presence of Wilson loops, though, the physical Hilbert space must be enlarged by adding test electric charges along the loop. I discuss how at nonzero temperature Polyakov loops are naturally related to the propagator of a test charge. 't Hooft loops represent the propagation of a test magnetic charge, and so do not alter the physical Hilbert space.
We write down explicit expressions for the $x$-evolution (equivalent to energy or rapidity evolution) of $2 n$ ($n = 1, 2, ...$) Wilson lines using the JIMWLK equation and the Color Glass Condensate formalism. We investigate the equation in the weak gluon field limit (linear regime) by expanding the Wilson lines in powers of the gluon field and show that it reduces to the BJKP equation describing the evolution of a state of $2 n$ Reggeized gluons with energy. We also make available for download a {\it Mathematica} program which provides this expression for any value of $n$.
Nonperturbative and perturbative interaction mechanisms of Wilson loops in gluodynamics are studied within the background field formalism. The first one operates when distance between minimal surfaces of the loops is small and may be important for sea quark effects and strong decay processes. The second mechanism -- perturbative interaction in nonperturbative confining background is found to be physically dominant for all loop configurations characteristic of scattering process. It reduces to perturbative gluon exchanges at small distances, while at larger distances it corresponds to the t-cha…
The Green function of the quark-antiquark system in the confining background field is analysed using the Feynman-Schwinger formalism. The Hamiltonian for the case of massive spinning quarks is obtained in the form containing essentially nonhermitian part. The eigenvalue problem for such type of the Hamiltonian is discussed, and it is shown that no complex eigenvalues arise. The corresponding no nunitary Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is performed to obtain the hermitian Hamiltonian, and the standard spin-orbit interaction term is recovered.
We develop a model for hadrons in the framework of the worldline formalism. While being based wholly in four-dimensional quantum field theory, it shares many features with holographic approaches: Already by the use of the worldline formalism the approach appears intrinsically quantum mechanical. As auxiliary fifth dimension Schwinger's proper time is grouped with the physical four spacetime dimensions into an AdS5 geometry, which is warped due to conformal-symmetry breaking effects. Hidden local symmetry is emergent. The four-dimensional sources are extended to five-dimensional fields by a Wil…
Field-correlator method is used to calculate nonperturbative dynamics of quarks in a baryon. General expression for the 3q Green's function is obtained using Fock-Feynman-Schwinger (world-line) path integral formalism, where all dynamics is contained in the 3q Wilson loop with spin-field insertions. Using lowest cumulant contribution for Wilson loop one obtains an Y-shaped string with a deep hole at the string junction position. Using einbein formalism for the quark kinetic terms one automatically obtains constituent quark masses, calculable through the string tension. Resulting effective acti…
We use the large N_f self consistency formalism to compute the $O(1/N_f)$ critical exponent corresponding to the renormalization of the flavour non-singlet twist two Wilson operators which arise in the operator product expansion of currents in deep inelastic processes. Expanding the $d$-dimensional expression in powers of $ε$ $=$ $(4-d)/2$ the coefficients of $ε$ agree with the known two loop structure of the corresponding renormalization group function and we deduce analytic expressions for all moments, $n$, at three and higher orders in perturbation theory in the $\overline{\mbox{MS}}$ schem…
The Stochastic Vacuum Model for QCD, proposed by Dosch and Simonov, is fused with a Worldline casting of the underlying theory, i.e. QCD. Important, non-perturbative features of the model are studied. In particular, contributions associated with the spin-field interaction are calculated and both the validity of the loop equations and of the Bianchi identity are explicitly demonstrated. As an application, a simulated meson-meson scattering problem is studied in the Regge kinematical regime. The process is modeled in terms of the "helicoidal" Wilson contour along the lines introduced by Janik an…
Parton distribution functions (PDFs) and light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) are central non-perturbative objects of interest in high-energy inelastic and elastic scattering, respectively. As a result, an ab-initio determination of these objects is highly desirable. In this paper we present theoretical details for the calculation of the PDFs and LCDAs using a heavy-quark operator product expansion method. This strategy was proposed in a previous paper [Phys. Rev. D 73, 014501 (2006)] for computing higher moments of the PDFs using lattice QCD. Its central feature is the introduction of a…
In this talk we describe the application of the AdS/CFT correspondence for a confining background to the study of high energy scattering amplitudes in gauge theory. We relate the energy behaviour of scattering amplitudes to properties of minimal surfaces of the helicoidal type. We describe the results of hep-th/0003059 and hep-th/0010069 for amplitudes with vacuum quantum number exchange and, very briefly, hep-th/0110024 on the extension of this formalism to Reggeon exchange.
In this paper we encode the perturbative BFKL leading logarithmic resummation, relevant for the Regge limit behavior of QCD scattering amplitudes, in the IR-regulated effective action which satisfies exact functional renormalization group equations. This is obtained using a truncation with a specific infinite set of non local vertices describing the multi-Regge kinematics (MRK). The goal is to use this framework to study, in the high energy limit and at larger transverse distances the transition to a much simpler effective local reggeon field theory, whose critical properties were recently inv…
Radial excitations of the quark-antiquark string sweeping the Wilson-loop area are considered in the framework of the effective-action formalism. Identifying these excitations with the daughter Regge trajectories, we find corrections which they produce to the constituent quark mass. The energy of the quark-antiquark pair turns out to be mostly saturated by the constituent quark masses, rather than by the elongation of the quark-antiquark string. Specifically, while the constituent quark mass turns out to increase as the square root of the radial-excitation quantum number, the energy of the str…
Starting from a path integral representation of appropriate 4-point and 2-point gauge invariant Green functions and from the "Modified Area Law" model for the evaluation of the Wilson loop, a q \bar q Bethe-Salpeter like equation and a related Schwinger-Dyson equation can be obtained. From such equations an effective relativistic Hamiltonian can be derived by standard methods and then applied to the determination of the meson spectrum. The entire known heavy-heavy and heavy-light spectra and the lowest light-light Regge trajectories are rather well reproduced in terms of four parameters alone,…
First principle study of QCD at finite temperature $T$ and chemical potential $μ$ is essential for understanding a wide range of phenomena from heavy-ion collisions to cosmology and neutron stars. However, in the presence of finite density, the critical behavior lattice gauge theory without species doubling, is unknown. At strong coupling, we examine the phase structure on the $(μ,T)$ plane, using Hamiltonian lattice QCD with Wilson fermions. A tricritical point is found, separating the first and second order chiral phase transitions. Such a tricritical point at finite $T$ has not been found i…
We investigate the question whether Lipatov's high energy effective action is capable to reproduce quark and gluon propagators which resum interaction with a strong background field within high energy factorization. Such propagators are frequently employed in calculations within the Color Glass Condensate formalism, in particular when considering scattering of a dilute projectile on a dense target nucleus or nucleon. We find that such propagators can be obtained from the high energy effective action, if a special parametrization of the gluonic field is used, first proposed by Lipatov in the or…
Recent developments showed that hadron light-cone parton distributions could be directly extracted from spacelike correlators, known as quasi parton distributions, in the large hadron momentum limit. Unlike the normal light-cone parton distribution, a quasi parton distribution contains ultraviolet (UV) power divergence associated with the Wilson line self energy. We show that to all orders in the coupling expansion, the power divergence can be removed by a "mass" counterterm in the auxiliary $z$-field formalism, in the same way as the renormalization of power divergence for an open Wilson line…
We study the structure of soft gluon corrections to multi-leg scattering amplitudes in a non-Abelian gauge theory by analysing the corresponding product of semi-infinite Wilson lines. We prove that diagrams exponentiate such that the colour factors in the exponent are fully connected. This completes the generalisation of the non-Abelian exponentiation theorem, previously proven in the case of a Wilson loop, to the case of multiple Wilson lines in arbitrary representations of the colour group. Our proof is based on the replica trick in conjunction with a new formalism where multiple emissions f…
Using the eigen-mode of the QCD Dirac operator $\Slash D=γ^μD^μ$, we develop a manifestly gauge-covariant expansion and projection of the QCD operators such as the Wilson loop and the Polyakov loop. With this method, we perform a direct analysis of the correlation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in lattice QCD Monte Carlo calculation on $6^4$ at $β$=5.6. Even after removing the low-lying Dirac modes, which are responsible to chiral symmetry breaking, we find that the Wilson loop obeys the area law, and the slope parameter corresponding to the string tension or the confinement …
We further develop the formalism for taking position-space cuts of eikonal diagrams introduced in [Phys.Rev.Lett. 114 (2015), no. 18 181602, arXiv:1410.5681]. These cuts are applied directly to the position-space representation of any such diagram and compute its discontinuity to the leading order in the dimensional regulator. We provide algorithms for computing the position-space cuts and apply them to several two- and three-loop eikonal diagrams, finding agreement with results previously obtained in the literature. We discuss a non-trivial interplay between the cutting prescription and non-A…
We use 2HEX smeared gauge configurations generated with an $\mathrm{N}_\mathrm{f}\mathrm{=2+1}$ clover improved Wilson action to investigate $ππ$ scattering in the $ρ$ channel. The range of lattice spacings (0.054 to 0.12 fm) and space-like extents (32 and 48) allows us to extract the scattering parameters through the volume dependence of the $ππ$-state energies according to Lüscher's formalism. The pion masses (134 to 300 MeV) are light enough to allow the decay of the rho and the level repulsion observed indicates that our data are sensitive to the interaction. We analyse our data with a mul…
We construct a quark target model (QTM) to incorporate intrinsic glue into effective low-energy models of QCD, which often contain only quark degrees of freedom. This method guarantees the gauge invariance of observables order-by-order in the strong coupling. The quark and gluon PDFs for the dressed quarks are obtained in the QTM at leading order. We demonstrate gauge invariance of the results by comparing both covariant and light cone gauges, with the former including an explicit Wilson line contribution. A key finding is that in covariant gauges the Wilson line can carry a significant amount…
We report on our ongoing project to determine the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution to the muon $g-2$, using ensembles with $N_f=2+1$ flavours of O($a$) improved Wilson quarks generated by the CLS effort, with pion masses down to the physical value. We employ O($a$) improved versions of the local and conserved vector currents to compute the contributions of the light, strange and charm quarks to $(g-2)_μ$, using the time-momentum representation. We perform a detailed investigation of the systematic effects arising from constraining the long-distance regime of the vector c…
In this paper we implement Schwinger-Keldysh closed-time path integral formalism in non-equilibrium QCD to the definition of Collins-Soper fragmentation function. We consider a high p_T parton in QCD medium at initial time t_0 with arbitrary non-equilibrium (non-isotropic) distribution function f(\vec{p}) fragmenting to hadron. We formulate parton to hadron fragmentation function in non-equilibrium QCD in the light-cone quantization formalism. It may be possible to include final state interactions with the medium via modification of the Wilson lines in this definition of the non-equilibrium fr…
We present a lattice calculation of the leading hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This work is based on a subset of the CLS ensembles with $N_f = 2+1$ dynamical quarks and a quenched charm quark. Noise reduction techniques are used to improve significantly the statistical precision of the dominant light quark contribution. The main source of systematic error comes from finite size effects which are estimated using the formalism described in Ref. [7] and based on our knowledge of the timelike pion form factor. The strange and charm quark contributions are under…
The high-energy QCD factorization for Deep Inelastic Scattering and for proton-nucleus collisions using Wilson line formalism and factorization in rapidity is discussed. We show that in DIS the factorization in rapidity reduces to the $k_{\rm T}$-factorization when the 2-gluon approximation is applied, provided that the composite Wilson line operator is used in the high-energy Operator Product Expansion. We then show that the inclusive forward cross-section in proton-nucleus collisions factorizes in parton distribution functions, fragmentation functions and dipole gluon distribution function a…
