We consider the classical integrable structure of two-dimensional non-linear sigma models with target space three-dimensional Schrodinger spacetimes. There are the two descriptions to describe the classical dynamics: 1) the left description based on SL(2,R)_L and 2) the right description based on U(1)_R. We have shown the sl(2,R)_L Yangian and q-deformed Poincare algebras associated with them. We proceed to argue an infinite-dimensional extension of the q-deformed Poincare algebra. The corresponding charges are constructed by using a non-local map from the flat conserved currents related to the Yangian. The exotic tower structure of the charges is revealed by directly computing the classical Poisson brackets. Then the monodromy matrices in both descriptions are shown to be gauge-equivalent via the relation between the spectral parameters. We also give a simple Riemann sphere interpretation of this equivalence.
We proceed to study the hybrid integrable structure in two-dimensional non-linear sigma models with target space three-dimensional squashed spheres. A quantum affine algebra and a pair of Yangian algebras are realized in the sigma models and, according to them, there are two descriptions to describe the classical dynamics 1) the trigonometric description and 2) the rational description, respectively. For every description, a Lax pair is constructed and the associated monodromy matrix is also constructed. In this paper we show the gauge-equivalence of the monodromy matrices in the trigonometric…
The 2d principal models without boundaries have $G\times G$ symmetry. The already known integrable boundaries have either $H\times H$ or $G_{D}$ symmetries, where $H$ is such a subgroup of $G$ for which $G/H$ is a symmetric space while $G_{D}$ is the diagonal subgroup of $G\times G$. These boundary conditions have a common feature: they do not contain free parameters. We have found new integrable boundary conditions for which the remaining symmetry groups are either $G\times H$ or $H\times G$ and they contain one free parameter. The related boundary monodromy matrices are also described.
We study an N=(4,4) supersymmetric gauged linear sigma model which gives rise to the nonlinear sigma model for multi-centered KK-monopoles. We find a new T-duality transformation of the model even in the presence of F-terms. Performing T-duality, we find the gauged linear sigma model whose IR limit describes the exotic 522-brane with B-field.
An important subclass of D-branes on a Calabi-Yau manifold, X, are in 1-1 correspondence with objects in D(X), the derived category of coherent sheaves on X. We study the action of the monodromies in Kaehler moduli space on these D-branes. We refine and extend a conjecture of Kontsevich about the form of one of the generators of these monodromies (the monodromy about the "conifold" locus) and show that one can do quite explicit calculations of the monodromy action in many examples. As one application, we verify a prediction of Mayr about the action of the monodromy about the Landau-Ginsburg lo…
We study two-dimensional ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model (GLSM). Its low energy effective theory is a nonlinear sigma model whose target space gives rise to a configuration of five-branes in string theory. In this article we focus on sigma models for NS5-branes, KK5-branes and an exotic $5^2_2$-brane. In particular, we carefully analyze the GLSM for an exotic $5^2_2$-brane whose background configuration is multi-valued. The exotic $5^2_2$-brane is a concrete example of nongeometric configuration in string theory. We find that the exotic feature originates from the string winding coo…
We propose a natural $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$-graded generalisation of $d=2$, $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetry and construct a $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-space realisation thereof. Due to the grading, the supercharges close with respect to, in the classical language, a commutator rather than an anticommutator. This is then used to build classical (linear and non-linear) sigma models that exhibit this novel supersymmetry via mimicking standard superspace methods. The fields in our models are bosons, right-handed and left-handed Majorana-Weyl spinors, and exotic bosons. The bosons commute with …
We study the string worldsheet description of the background geometry of the exotic $5^2_2$-brane where two isometries are gauged. This is an extension of the gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) for the exotic $5^2_2$-brane with a single gauged isometry. The new GLSM with two gauged isometries has only ${\mathcal N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetry rather than ${\mathcal N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetry of the original GLSM. This is caused by a conflict between two different $SU(2)_R$ associated with the two gauge symmetries. However, if we take a certain limit, we can find the genuine string sigma model of the backg…
We present a systematic study of ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric non-linear sigma models on $S^2$ with the target being a Kähler manifold. We discuss their reformulation in terms of cohomological field theory. In the cohomological formulation we use a novel version of 2D self-duality which involves a $U(1)$ action on $S^2$. In addition to the generic model we discuss the theory with target space equivariance corresponding to a supersymmetric sigma model coupled to a non-dynamical supersymmetric background gauge multiplet. We discuss the localization locus and perform a one-loop calculation aro…
We find an explicit relation between the two known ways of generating an infinite set of local conserved charges for the string sigma model on AdS_5 x S^5: the Backlund and monodromy approaches. We start by constructing the two-parameter family of Backlund transformations for the string with an arbitrary world-sheet metric. We then show that only for a special value of one of the parameters the solutions generated by this transformation are compatible with the Virasoro constraints. By solving the Backlund equations in a non-perturbative fashion, we finally show that the generating functional o…
The goal of this paper is to make first steps towards the quantisation of integrable non-linear sigma models using the formalism of affine Gaudin models, by approaching these theories through their conformal limits. We focus mostly on the example of the Klimčík model, which is a two-parameter deformation of the Principal Chiral Model on a Lie group $G$. We show that the UV fixed point of this theory is described classically by two decoupled chiral affine Gaudin models, encoding its left- and right-moving degrees of freedom, and give a detailed analysis of the chiral and integrable structures o…
We proceed to study the integrable structures of two-dimensional non-linear sigma models defined on three-dimensional Schrodinger spacetimes. We show that anisotropic Lax pairs are equivalent with isotropic Lax pairs with flat conserved currents under non-local gauge transformations. Then a quite non-trivial realization of the undeformed Yangian symmetry Y(sl(2)) is revealed after an appropriate gauge fixing, which is determined by comparing the gauge transformation to a quantum Jordanian twist. As a result, an exotic symmetry found in arXiv:1209.4147 may be interpreted as a Jordanian deformat…
In this letter we follow up recent work of Halverson-Kumar-Morrison on some exotic examples of gauged linear sigma models (GLSM's). Specifically, they describe a set of U(1) x Z_2 GLSM's with superpotentials that are quadratic in p fields, rather than linear as is typically the case. These theories RG flow to sigma models on branched double covers, where the double cover is realized via a Z_2 gerbe. For that gerbe structure, and hence the double cover, the Z_2 factor in the gauge group is essential. In this letter we propose an analogous geometric understanding of phases without that Z_2, in t…
We use a T-duality invariant action to investigate the behaviour of a string in non-geometric backgrounds, where there is a non-trivial global $O(D,D)$ patching or monodromy. This action leads to a set of Dirac brackets describing the dynamics of the doubled string, with these brackets determined only by the monodromy. This allows for a simple derivation of non-commutativity and non-associativity in backgrounds which are (even locally) non-geometric. We focus here on the example of the three-torus with H-flux, finding non-commutativity but not non-associativity, and also comment on the relatio…
In this paper we explore nonabelian gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) for symplectic and orthogonal Grassmannians and flag manifolds, checking e.g. global symmetries, Witten indices, and Calabi-Yau conditions, following up a proposal in the math community. For symplectic Grassmannians, we check that the Coulomb branch vacua of the GLSM are consistent with ordinary and equivariant quantum cohomology of the space.
We study a local description of composite five-branes of codimension two. The formulation is constructed by virtue of $SL(2,{\mathbb Z}) \times SL(2,{\mathbb Z)}$ monodromy associated with two-torus. Applying conjugate monodromy transformations to the complex structures of the two-torus, we obtain a field configuration of a defect $(p,q)$ five-brane. This is a composite state of $p$ defect NS5-branes and $q$ exotic $5^2_2$-branes. We also obtain a new example of hyper-Kähler geometry. This is an ALG space, a generalization of an ALF space which asymptotically has a tri-holomorphic two-torus ac…
We establish a double dualization in two-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory. We construct a gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) which contains a complex twisted linear superfield coupled to two sets of Abelian vector superfields. In the IR regime, the GLSM provides a string sigma model whose target spaces are a defect NS5-brane, a Kaluza-Klein vortex and an exotic $5^2_2$-brane. All of them are five-branes of codimension two and are related by T-duality. This model is a natural extension of the GLSM proposed by Tong which gives a sigma model for an H-monopole, i.e., a smeared NS5-brane of co…
We construct recursively an infinite number of Poisson structures for the supersymmetric integrable hierarchy governing the Pohlmeyer reduction of superstring sigma models on the target spaces AdS_{n}\times S^n, n=2,3,5. These Poisson structures are all non-local and not relativistic except one, which is the canonical Poisson structure of the semi-symmetric space sine-Gordon model (SSSSG). We verify that the superposition of the first three Poisson structures corresponds to the canonical Poisson structure of the reduced sigma model. Using the recursion relations we construct commuting charges …
In this paper, we develop a new method of computing three-point functions in the SU(2) sector of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory in the semi-classical regime at weak coupling, which closely parallels the strong coupling analysis. The structure threading two disparate regimes is the so-called monodromy relation, an identity connecting the three-point functions with and without the insertion of the monodromy matrix. We shall show that this relation can be put to use directly for the semi-classical regime, where the dynamics is governed by the classical Landau-Lifshitz sigma model. Sp…
${\mathbb Z}_2\times {\mathbb Z}_2$-graded mechanics admits four types of particles: ordinary bosons, two classes of fermions (fermions belonging to different classes commute among each other) and exotic bosons. In this paper we construct the basic ${\mathbb Z}_2\times {\mathbb Z}_2$-graded worldline multiplets (extending the cases of one-dimensional supersymmetry) and compute, based on a general scheme, their invariant classical actions and worldline sigma-models. The four basic multiplets contain two bosons and two fermions. They are $(2,2,0)$, with two propagating bosons and two propagating…
Various classes of exotic singularity models have been studied as possible mimic models for the observed recent acceleration of the universe. Here we further study one of these classes and, under the assumption that they are phenomenological toy models for the behavior of an underlying scalar field which also couples to the electromagnetic sector of the theory, obtain the corresponding behavior of the fine-structure constant $α$ for particular choices of model parameters that have been previously shown to be in reasonable agreement with cosmological observations. We then compare this predicted…
The algebra A(D-3)+++ dimensionally reduces to the E(D-1) symmetry algebra of (12-D)-dimensional supergravity. An infinite set of five-dimensional gravitational objects trivially embedded in D-dimensions is constructed by identifying the null geodesic motion on cosets embedded in the generalised Kac-Moody algebra A(D-3)+++. By analogy with supergravity these are bound states of dual gravitons. The metric interpolates continuously between exotic gravitational solutions generated by the action of the Geroch group but is not a continuously transforming solution of the Einstein-Hilbert action. We …
We classify the supersymmetric vacua of N=4, d=5 supergravity in terms of G-structures. We identify three classes of solutions: with R^3, SU(2) and generic SO(4) structure. Using the Killing spinor equations, we fully characterize the first two classes and partially solve the latter. With the N=4 graviton multiplet decomposed in terms of N=2 multiplets: the graviton, vector and gravitino multiplets, we obtain new supersymmetric solutions corresponding to turning on fields in the gravitino multiplet. These vacua are described in terms of an SO(5) vector sigma-model coupled with gravity, in thre…
Integrality in the Hodge theory of Calabi-Yau fourfolds is essential to find the vacuum structure and the anomaly cancellation mechanism of four dimensional F-theory compactifications. We use the Griffiths-Frobenius geometry and homological mirror symmetry to fix the integral monodromy basis in the primitive horizontal subspace of Calabi-Yau fourfolds. The Gamma class and supersymmetric localization calculations in the 2d gauged linear sigma model on the hemisphere are used to check and extend this method. The result allows us to study the superpotential and the Weil-Petersson metric and an as…
We explore the S-matrices of gapped, unitary, Lorentz invariant quantum field theories with a global O($N$) symmetry in 1+1 dimensions. We extremize various cubic and quartic couplings in the two-to-two scattering amplitudes of vector particles. Saturating these bounds, we encounter known integrable models with O($N$) symmetry such as the O($N$) Gross-Neveu and non-linear sigma models and the scattering of kinks in the sine-Gordon model. We also considered more general mass spectra for which we move away from the integrable realm. In this regime we find (numerically, through a large N analysis…
