The derivative discontinuity of the exchange-correlation (xc) energy at integer particle number is a property of the exact, unknown xc functional of density functional theory (DFT) which is absent in many popular local and semilocal approximations. In lattice DFT, approximations exist which exhibit a discontinuity in the xc potential at half filling. However, due to convergence problems of the Kohn-Sham (KS) self-consistency cycle, the use of these functionals is mostly restricted to situations where the local density is away from half filling. Here a numerical scheme for the self-consistent solution of the lattice KS Hamiltonian with a local xc potential with rapid (or quasi-discontinuous) density dependence is suggested. The problem is formulated in terms of finite-temperature DFT where the discontinuity in the xc potential emerges naturally in the limit of zero temperature. A simple parametrization is suggested for the xc potential of the uniform 1D Hubbard model at finite temperature which is obtained from the solution of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. The feasibility of the numerical scheme is demonstrated by application to a model of fermionic atoms in a harmonic trap. The corresponding density profile exhibits a plateau of integer occupation at low temperatures which melts away for higher temperatures.
Theoretically, NaAuS is predicted as topological insulator, while no detail electronic structure study has been done for this compound. Here, we report the structural and electronic properties of NaAuS by using LDA, PBEsol, PBE and revPBE exchange correlation functionals. The calculated values of equilibrium lattice constant for LDA, PBEsol, PBE and revPBE exchange correlation functionals are found to be $\sim$6.128 Å, $\sim$6.219 Å, $\sim$6.353 Å and $\sim$6.442 Å, respectively. The bulk modulus predicted by LDA, PBEsol, PBE and revPBE exchange correlation functionals is $\sim$66.6, $\sim$56.…
We consider the extended Hubbard model and introduce a corresponding Heisenberg-like problem written in terms of spin operators. The derived formalism is reminiscent of Anderson's idea of the effective exchange interaction and takes into account nonlocal correlation effects. The results for the exchange interaction and magnetic susceptibility are expressed in terms of single-particle quantities, which can be obtained efficiently in realistic calculations of multiband systems. In the strongly spin-polarized limit, when the local magnetic moment is well-defined, the exchange interaction reduces …
In spin-density-functional theory (SDFT) for noncollinear magnetic materials, the Kohn-Sham system features exchange-correlation (xc) scalar potentials and magnetic fields. The significance of the xc magnetic fields is not very well explored; in particular, they can give rise to local torques on the magnetization, which are absent in standard local and semilocal approximations. Exact benchmark solutions for a five-site extended Hubbard lattice at half filling and in the presence of spin-orbit coupling are compared with SDFT results obtained using orbital-dependent exchange-only approximations.…
We train a neural network as the universal exchange-correlation functional of density-functional theory that simultaneously reproduces both the exact exchange-correlation energy and potential. This functional is extremely non-local, but retains the computational scaling of traditional local or semi-local approximations. It therefore holds the promise of solving some of the delocalization problems that plague density-functional theory, while maintaining the computational efficiency that characterizes the Kohn-Sham equations. Furthermore, by using automatic differentiation, a capability present …
Thermal density functional theory calculations often use the Mermin-Kohn-Sham scheme, but employ ground-state approximations to the exchange-correlation (XC) free energy. In the simplest solvable nontrivial model, an asymmetric Hubbard dimer, we calculate the exact many-body energies and the exact Mermin-Kohn-Sham functionals for this system and extract the exact XC free energy. For moderate temperatures and weak correlation, we find this approximation to be excellent. We extract various exact free-energy correlation components and the exact adiabatic connection formula.
A recently proposed density functional approach for steady-state transport through nanoscale systems (called i-DFT) is used to investigate junctions which are asymmetrically coupled to the leads and biased with asymmetric voltage drops. In the latter case, the system can simply be transformed to a physically equivalent one with symmetric voltage drop by a total energy shift of the entire system. For the former case, known exchange correlation gate and bias functionals have to be generalized to take into account the asymmetric coupling to the leads. We show how differential conductance spectra …
A new class of orbital-dependent exchange-correlation (xc) potentials for applications in noncollinear spin-density-functional theory is developed. Starting from the optimized effective potential (OEP) formalism for the exact exchange potential - generalized to the noncollinear case - correlation effects are added via a self-consistent procedure inspired by the Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sjolander (STLS) method. The orbital-dependent xc potentials are applied to the Hubbard dimer in uniform and noncollinear magnetic fields and compared to exact diagonalization and to the Bethe-ansatz local spin-density …
We present a first-principles investigation of the spin-ice state in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ using a magnetic source-free exchange and correlation functional, implemented in the Castep electronic-structure code. By comparing results from the conventional local spin-density approximation, we show that a spin-ice state in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ can be reliably obtained by removing the magnetic sources from the exchange and correlation contributions to the potential, and we contrast this against the computed ground states of other frustrated pyrochlore magnets.
In spin-density-functional theory for noncollinear magnetic materials, the Kohn-Sham system features exchange-correlation (xc) scalar potentials and magnetic fields. The significance of the xc magnetic fields is not very well explored; in particular, they can give rise to local torques on the magnetization, which are absent in standard local and semilocal approximations. We obtain exact benchmark solutions for two electrons on four-site extended Hubbard lattices over a wide range of interaction strengths, and compare exact xc potentials and magnetic fields with approximations obtained from orb…
Gross--Oliveira--Kohn (GOK) ensemble density-functional theory (GOK-DFT) is a time-\textit{independent} extension of density-functional theory (DFT) which allows to compute excited-state energies via the derivatives of the ensemble energy with respect to the ensemble weights. Contrary to the time-dependent version of DFT (TD-DFT), double excitations can be easily computed within GOK-DFT. However, to take full advantage of this formalism, one must have access to a \textit{weight-dependent} exchange-correlation functional in order to model the infamous ensemble derivative contribution to the exc…
