Asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs) are fundamental nuclear constants playing important role in nuclear reactions, nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics. In this paper the physical reasons of the Coulomb renormalization of the ANC are addressed. Using Pinkston-Satchler equation the ratio for the proton and neutron ANCs of mirror nuclei is obtained in terms of the Wronskians from the radial overlap functions and regular solutions of the two-body Schrödinger equation with the short-range interaction excluded. This ratio allows one to use microscopic overlap functions for mirror nuclei in the internal region, where they are the most accurate, to correctly predict the ratio of the ANCs for mirror nuclei, which determine the amplitudes of the tails of the overlap functions. Calculations presented for different nuclei demonstrate the Coulomb renormalization effects and independence of the ratio of the nucleon ANCs for mirror nuclei on the channel radius. This ratio is valid both for bound states and resonances. One of the goals of this paper is to draw attention on the possibility to use the Coulomb renormalized ANCs rather than the standard ones especially when the standard ANCs are too large.
We show how the charge symmetry of strong interactions can be used to relate the proton and neutron asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs) of the one nucleon overlap integrals for light mirror nuclei. This relation extends to the case of real proton decay where the mirror analog is a virtual neutron decay of a loosely bound state. In this case, a link is obtained between the proton width and the squared ANC of the mirror neutron state. The relation between mirror overlaps can be used to study astrophysically relevant proton capture reactions based on information obtained from transfer re…
It has been suggested recently (Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 232501 (2003)) that charge symmetry of nucleon-nucleon interactions relates the Asymptotic Normalization Coefficients (ANCs) of proton and neutron virtual decays of mirror nuclei. This relation is given by a simple analytical formula which involves proton and neutron separation energies, charges of residual nuclei and the range of their strong interaction with the last nucleon. Relation between mirror ANCs, if understood properly, can be used to predict astrophysically relevant direct proton capture cross sections using neutron ANCs measured…
Assuming that the ratio between asymptotic normalization coefficients of mirror states is model independent, charge symmetry can be used to indirectly extract astrophysically relevant proton capture reactions on proton-rich nuclei based on information on stable isotopes. The assumption has been tested for light nuclei within the microscopic cluster model. In this work we explore the Hamiltonian independence of the ratio between asymptotic normalization coefficients of mirror states when deformation and core excitation is introduced in the system. For this purpose we consider a phenomenological…
It has been suggested recently ({\it Phys. Rev. Lett.} 91, 232501 (2003)) that the widths of narrow proton resonances are related to neutron Asymptotic Normalization Coefficients (ANCs) of their bound mirror analogs because of charge symmetry of nucleon-nucleon interactions. This relation is approximated by a simple analytical formula which involves proton resonance energies, neutron separation energies, charges of residual nuclei and the range of their strong interaction with the last nucleon. In the present paper, we perform microscopic-cluster model calculations for the ratio of proton widt…

We investigate how the Coulomb interaction affects the energy $E$ and width $Γ$ of resonance states in mirror nuclei. We employ a three-cluster microscopic model to determine position of resonance states in two- and three-body continua. Two parameters are introduced to quantify effects of the Coulomb interactions. As the energy and width of the corresponding resonance states of mirror nuclei are displayed on an $E$-$Γ$ plane, these parameters determine a rotation and a dilatation. With the help of these parameters we found resonance states with strong, small and medium effects of the Coulomb i…
The exotic structures in the 2s_{1/2} states of five pairs of mirror nuclei ^{17}O-^{17}F, ^{26}Na-^{26}P, ^{27}Mg-^{27}P, ^{28}Al-^{28}P and ^{29}Si-^{29}P are investigated with the relativistic mean-field (RMF) theory and the single-particle model (SPM) to explore the role of the Coulomb effects on the proton halo formation. The present RMF calculations show that the exotic structure of the valence proton is more obvious than that of the valence neutron of its mirror nucleus, the difference of exotic size between each mirror nuclei becomes smaller with the increase of mass number A of the mi…
We study the Okamoto-Nolen-Schiffer (ONS) anomaly in the binding energy of mirror nuclei at high density by adding a single neutron or proton to a quark gluon plasma. In this high-density limit we find an anomaly equal to two-thirds of the Coulomb exchange energy of a proton. This effect is dominated by quark electromagnetic interactions---rather than by the up-down quark mass difference. At normal density we calculate the Coulomb energy of neutron matter using a string-flip quark model. We find a nonzero Coulomb energy because of the neutron's charged constituents. This effect could make a si…
Background: An asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) characterizes the asymptotic form of a one-nucleon overlap integral required for description of nucleon-removal reactions. Purpose: We investigate the impact of the particle continuum on proton and neutron ANCs for mirror systems from $p$- and $sd$-shell regions. Method: We use the real-energy and complex-energy continuum shell model approaches. Results: We studied the general structure of the single-particle ANCs as a function of the binding energy and orbital angular momentum. We computed ANCs in mirror nuclei for different physical s…
The method of asymptotic normalization coefficients is a standard approach for studies of two-body non-resonant radiative capture processes in nuclear astrophysics. This method suggests a fully analytical description of the radiative capture cross section in the low-energy region of the astrophysical interest. We demonstrate how this method can be generalized to the case of three-body $2p$ radiative captures. It was found that an essential feature of this process is the highly correlated nature of the capture. This reflects the complexity of three-body Coulomb continuum problem. Radiative capt…
Coulomb energy differences between mirror nuclei with $A \le 70$ are calculated within the framework of the nuclear shell model using an effective Coulomb plus isovector and isotensor interaction. Absolute binding energies for proton-rich nuclei are predicted by adding the calculated Coulomb shifts to experimentally measured binding energies for the neutron-rich mirror. The location of the proton drip-line is investigated, as well as candidates for the exotic decay mode known as di-proton emission. Taking into account the lifetimes of competing decay modes and limits imposed by experimental se…
A Fock space representation of the monopole part of the Coulomb potential is presented. Quantum effects show through a small orbital term in $l(l+1)$. Once it is averaged out, the classical electrostatic energy emerges as an essentially exact expression, which makes it possible to eliminate the Nolen-Schiffer anomaly, and to estimate neutron skins and the evolution of radii along yrast states of mirror nuclei. The energy differences of the latter are quantitatively reproduced by the monopole term and a schematic multipole one.
Owing to the presence of the Coulomb barrier at astrophysically relevant kinetic energies it is very difficult, or sometimes impossible, to measure astrophysical reaction rates in the laboratory. That is why different indirect techniques are being used along with direct measurements. Here we address two important indirect techniques, the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) and the Trojan Horse (TH) methods. We discuss the application of the ANC technique for calculation of the astrophysical processes in the presence of subthreshold bound states, in particular, two different mechanisms a…
The density functional determining the Coulomb energy of nuclei is calculated to the first order in $e^2$. It is shown that the Coulomb energy includes three terms: the Hartree energy; the Fock energy; and the correlation Coulomb energy (CCE), which contributes considerably to the surface energy, the mass difference between mirror nuclei, and the single-particle spectrum. A CCE-based mechanism of a systematic shift of the single-particle spectrum is proposed. A dominant contribution to the CCE is shown to come from the surface region of nuclei. The CCE effect on the calculated proton drip line…
Background: Electric-quadrupole ($E2$) strengths relate to the underlying quadrupole deformation of a nucleus and present a challenge for many nuclear theories. Mirror nuclei in the vicinity of the line of $N=Z$ represent a convenient laboratory for testing deficiencies in such models, making use of the isospin-symmetry of the systems. Purpose: Uncertainties associated with literature $E2$ strengths in \textsuperscript{23}Mg are some of the largest in $T_z=\left|\frac{1}{2}\right|$ nuclei in the $sd$-shell. The purpose of the present work is to improve the precision with which these values are…

A theoretically consistent approach to the calculation of the Coulomb correlation corrections to the single--particle energies is presented. New contributions to the single--particle energies previously overlooked in the literature are now identified and taken into account. We show that the interplay between the Coulomb interaction and the strong interaction, which is enhanced in the nuclear surface, leads to an upward shift of the proton single--particle levels. This shift affects the position of the calculated proton drip line, a shift towards decreasing $Z$. We describe briefly a similar me…
We study the mirror symmetry breaking of $^6$He-$^6$Be and $^8$He-$^8$C using the $^4$He + $X$N ($X$=2, 4) cluster model. The many-body resonances are treated for the correct boundary condition using the complex scaling method. We find that the ground state radius of $^8$C is larger than that of $^8$He due to the Coulomb repulsion in $^8$C. On the other hand, the $0^+_2$ resonances of the two nuclei exhibit the inverse relation; the $^8$C radius is smaller than the $^8$He radius. This is due to the Coulomb barrier of the valence protons around the $^4$He cluster core in $^8$C, which breaks the…
A gross estimate of the neutron skin [0.80(5)$(N-Z)/A$ fm] is extracted from experimental proton radii, represented by a four parameter fit, and observed mirror displacement energies (CDE). The calculation of the latter relies on an accurately derived Coulomb energy and smooth averages of the charge symmetry breaking potentials constrained to state of the art values. The only free parameter is the neutron skin itself. The Nolen Schiffer anomaly is reduced to small deviations (rms=127 keV) that exhibit a secular trend. It is argued that with state of the art shell model calculations the anomaly…
We present an accurate method of treating the one-neutron removal reaction at intermediate incident energies induced by both nuclear and Coulomb interactions. In the method, the nuclear and Coulomb breakup processes are consistently treated by the method of continuum discretized coupled channels without making the adiabatic approximation to the Coulomb interaction, so that the removal cross section calculated never diverges. This method is applied to recently measured one-neutron removal cross section for $^{31}$Ne+$^{12}$C scattering at 230 MeV/nucleon and $^{31}$Ne+$^{208}$Pb scattering at 2…
The Coulomb-nuclear phase shift $δ^{(cs)}_l$, $\cotδ^{(cs)}_l$ and a finite limit of the nuclear part $Δ_l(k)$ of the effective-range function (ERF) are derived for an arbitrary orbital momentum $l$ when energy $E\rightarrow0$. It is proved that $\cotδ^{(cs)}_l$ has an essential singularity at zero energy, but $Δ_l(k)$ does not. The explicit finite limit of $Δ_l(0)$ is found. The property of $Δ_l(k)$ as a meromorphic function makes possible the analytical continuation of a re-normalized scattering amplitude from the physical energy region to a bound state pole. Then the asymptotic normalizatio…
The Coulomb-breakup method to extract the cross section for neutron radiative capture at astrophysical energies is analyzed in detail. In particular, its sensitivity to the description of the neutron-core continuum is ascertained. We consider the case of 14C(n, $γ$)15C for which both the radiative capture at low energy and the Coulomb breakup of 15C into 14C+n on Pb at 68 MeV/nucleon have been measured with accuracy. We confirm the direct proportionality of the cross section for both reactions to the square of the asymptotic normalization constant of 15C observed by Summers and Nunes [Phys. Re…

Studying antiproton scattering by nuclei (atoms) in the range of low energies, we found out that the increase in the antiproton-nucleus scattering amplitude through Coulomb interaction provides the possibility to investigate spin-dependent processes accompanying the interaction of antiprotons with nuclei (polarized or unpolarized) by means of mirror reflection of antiprotons from the vacuum-matter boundary, diffraction and channeling (surface diffraction and channeling) of antiprotons in crystals.
Background: Spectroscopic factors, overlaps, and isospin symmetry are often used in conjunction with single-particle wave functions for the phenomenological analysis of nuclear structure and reactions. Many differing prescriptions for connecting these quantities to physically relevant asymptotic normalization constants or widths are available in the literature, but their relationship and degree of validity are not always clear. Purpose: This paper derives relationships among the above quantities of interest using well-defined methodology and starting assumptions. Method: $R$-matrix theory is u…
The structure of ${}^{17}$C is used to define a nuclear interaction that, when used in a multichannel algebraic scattering theory for the $n+{}^{16}$C system, gives a credible definition of the (compound) excitation spectra. When couplings to the low-lying collective excitations of the ${}^{16}$C-core are taken into account, both sub-threshold and resonant states about the $n+{}^{16}$C threshold are found. Adding Coulomb potentials to that nuclear interaction, the method is used for the mirror system of $p+{}^{16}$Ne to specify the low-excitation spectrum of the particle unstable $^{17}$Na. We…

Asymptotic expressions for the radial and full wave functions of a three{body bound halo nuclear system with two charged particles in relative coordinates are obtained in explicit form, when the relative distance between two particles tends to infinity. The obtained asymptotic forms are applied to the analysis of the asymptotic behavior of the three-body (pn?) wave functions for the halo ($E^*=3.562$ MeV, $J^π=0^+$, $T=1$) state of $^6$Li derived by D. Baye within the Lagrange-mesh method for two forms of the $αN$ -potential. The agreement between the calculated wave function and the asymptoti…
In this paper we present all-order quantum mechanical calculations of 7Be breakup on heavy (208Pb) and light (12C) targets. We examine the issues concerning the extraction of the astrophysical S-factor from the breakup data. We discuss the interplay between Coulomb and nuclear breakup, and the importance of higher-order couplings on the cross section. We show that nuclear and Coulomb contributions are not separable using the standard angular selection criterion as nuclear breakup remains large for small scattering angles, even for the heavy target. However, by selecting an upper limit on the r…
The residue Coulomb interaction (RCI), which affects the results of symmetry energy of neutron-rich nucleus in isobaric yield ratio (IYR) methods, is difficult to be determined. Four RCI approximations are investigated: (1) the M1--RCI adopting the $a_{c}/T$ (the ratio of Coulomb energy coefficient to temperature) determined from the IYR of mirror-nuclei fragment; (2) the M2--RCI by fitting the difference between IYRs; (3) the M3--RCI by adopting the standard Coulomb energy at a temperature $T=2$MeV; and (4) neglecting the RCI among the three isobars. The M1--, M2-- and M3--RCI is found to no …
The recent experimental observation of isospin symmetry breaking (ISB) in the ground states of the $T=3/2$ mirror pair $^{73}$Sr - $^{73}$Br is theoretically studied using large-scale shell model calculations. The large valence space and the successful PFSDG-U effective interaction used for the nuclear part of the problem capture possible structural changes and provide a robust basis to treat the ISB effects of both electromagnetic and non-electromagnetic origin. The calculated shifts and mirror-energy-differences are consistent with the inversion of the $I^π$= 1/2$^{-}, 5/2^{-}$ states betwee…
The isospin breaking effects due to the Coulomb interaction in weakly-bound nuclei are studied using the Gamow Shell Model, a complex-energy configuration interaction approach which simultaneously takes into account many-body correlations between valence nucleons and continuum effects. We investigate the near-threshold behavior of one-nucleon spectroscopic factors and the structure of wave functions along an isomultiplet. Illustrative calculations are carried out for the T=1 isobaric triplet. By using a shell-model Hamiltonian consisting of an isoscalar nuclear interaction and the Coulomb term…
Recent values of the proton charge radius derived from the Lamb shift in electronic hydrogen tend to be larger than those from electron scattering. Therefore low-momentum-transfer scattering data from different groups and laboratories have been reanalyzed with Coulomb and recoil corrections included. This was done by calculating at each scattering angle and scattering energy the corresponding correction obtained from a partial wave program which includes recoil approximately. Corrections due to magnetic scattering were also made before the rms-radius was determined by a fit which allows free n…

Coulomb displacement energies, i.e., the differences between the energies of corresponding nuclear states in mirror nuclei, are evaluated using recent models for the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction. These modern NN potentials account for breaking of isospin symmetry and reproduce $pp$ and $pn$ phase shifts accurately. The predictions by these new potentials for the binding of $^{16}O$ are calculated. A particular focus of our study are effects due to nuclear correlations and charge-symmetry breaking (CSB). We find that the CSB terms in the modern NN interactions substantially reduce the discr…
Effects of the isospin-symmetry breaking (ISB) beyond mean-field Coulomb terms are systematically studied in nuclear masses near the $N=Z$ line. The Coulomb exchange contributions are calculated exactly. We use extended Skyrme energy density functionals (EDFs) with proton-neutron-mixed densities, to which we add new terms breaking the isospin symmetry. Two parameters associated with the new terms are determined by fitting mirror and triplet displacement energies (MDEs and TDEs) of isospin multiplets. The new EDFs reproduce MDEs for the $T=\frac12$ doublets and $T=1$ triplets, and TDEs for the …
Isospin symmetry breaking (ISB) effects in the charge radius difference $ΔR_{\rm ch}$ of mirror nuclei are studied using the test example of ${}^{48}$Ca and ${}^{48}$Ni. This choice allows for a transparent study of ISB contributions since paring and deformation effects, commonly required for the study of mirror nuclei, can be neglected in this specific pair. The connection of $ΔR_{\rm ch}$ with the nuclear Equation of State and the effect of ISB on such a relation are discussed according to an Energy Density Functional approach. We find that nuclear ISB effects may shift the estimated value f…
Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-deficient nucleus $^{36}$Ca was obtained up to 9 MeV using the $^{37}$Ca($p$,$d$)$^{36}$Ca and the $^{38}$Ca($p$,$t$)$^{36}$Ca transfer reactions. The radioactive nuclei, produced by the LISE spectrometer at GANIL, interacted with the protons of the liquid Hydrogen target CRYPTA, to produce light ejectiles (the deuteron $d$ or triton $t$) that were detected in the MUST2 detector array, in coincidence with the heavy residues %identified by a zero degree detection system. %States have been measured up to 9 MeV. Our main findings are: i) a similar shift in ene…
We investigate the dripline mirror nuclei, $^{11}$Li and $^{11}$O, located on the neutron and proton dripline, respectively. We calculate the lowest four states, $3/2^-$, $1/2^+$, $3/2^+$ and $5/2^+$, built on double occupancy in the nuclear $s_{1/2}$ and $p_{1/2}$ valence single-particle states. We use the hyperspherical adiabatic expansion method to solve the three-body problem for a frozen nuclear core surrounded by two identical nucleons. The four analogue states in $^{11}$O are obtained with precisely the same interactions as used for the four states in $^{11}$Li, except for addition of t…
Guiding by the relativistic local density approximation, we explore a phenomenological formula for the coupling strength of Coulomb field to take into account the Coulomb exchange term effectively in the relativistic Hartree approximation. Its validity in finite nuclei is examined by comparing with the exact treatment of the Coulomb exchange energies in the relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach. It is found that the exact Coulomb exchange energies can be reproduced by employing the phenomenological formula with the relative deviations less than 1% for semi-magic Ca, Ni, Sn, and Pb isot…

We study the resonance spectroscopy of the proton-rich nucleus 7B in the 4He+p+p+p cluster model. Many-body resonances are treated on the correct boundary condition as the Gamow states using the complex scaling method. We predict five resonances of 7B and evaluate the spectroscopic factors of the 6Be-p components. The importance of the 6Be(2+)-p component is shown in several states of 7B, which is a common feature of 7He, a mirror nucleus of 7B. For only the ground state of 7B, the mixing of 6Be(2+) state is larger than that of 6He(2+) in 7He, which indicates the breaking of the mirror symmetr…
The structure of the extremely proton-rich nucleus $^{11}_{~8}$O$_3$, the mirror of the two-neutron halo nucleus $^{11}_{~3}$Li$_8$, has been studied experimentally for the first time. Following two-neutron knockout reactions with a $^{13}$O beam, the $^{11}$O decay products were detected after two-proton emission and used to construct an invariant-mass spectrum. A broad peak of width $\sim$3\,MeV was observed. Within the Gamow coupled-channel approach, it was concluded that this peak is a multiplet with contributions from the four-lowest $^{11}$O resonant states: $J^π$=3/2$^-_1$, 3/2$^-_2$, 5…
