The hysteresis or internal friction in the deformation of crystalline solids stressed cyclically is studied from the viewpoint of collective dislocation dynamics. Stress-controlled simulations of a dislocation dynamics model at various loading frequencies and amplitudes are performed to study the stress - strain rate hysteresis. The hysteresis loop areas exhibit a maximum at a characteristic frequency and a power law frequency dependence in the low frequency limit, with the power law exponent exhibiting two regimes, corresponding to the jammed and the yielding/moving phases of the system, respectively. The first of these phases exhibits non-trivial critical-like viscoelastic dynamics, crossing over to intermittent viscoplastic deformation for higher stress amplitudes.
Description of domains switching processes in crystalline ferroelectrics by means of relaxation type equations with account of variable external electric field is proposed. Exact solution of these equations in closed analytical form at arbitrary dependence of electric field on time is obtained. A connection between frequency of sinusoidal external field and hysteresis loops shapes is analysed by numerical way. The calculation results are in qualitative accordance with experimental data. The present parametric study deals with the meso-scale modelling of concrete subjected to cyclic compression, which exhibits hysteresis loops during unloading and reloading. Concrete is idealised as a two-dimensional three-phase composite made of aggregates, mortar and interfacial transition zones (ITZs). The meso-scale modelling approach relies on the hypothesis that the hysteresis loops are caused by localised permanent displacements, which result in nonlinear fracture processes during unloading and reloading. A parametric study is carried out to investigate how aggregate density and size, a…
The lifetime of most metals is limited by cyclic loads, ending in fatigue failure. The progressive growth of cracks ends up in catastrophic failure. An advanced method is presented for the determination of cyclic crack growth on the microscale using a nanoindenter, which allows the characterization of > 10,000 loading cycles. It uses focused ion beam fabricated notched microcantilevers. The method has been validated by cyclic bending metallic glass and tungsten microcantilevers. The experiments reveal a stable crack growth during the lifetime of both samples. The metallic glass shows less plas…
We examine hysteresis in cyclic voltammetry of Br electrosorption onto single-crystal Ag(100) by dynamic Monte Carlo simulations. At room temperature, this system displays a second-order phase transition from a low-coverage disordered phase to a doubly degenerate $c (2 \times 2)$ phase. The electrochemical potential is ramped back and forth across the phase transition, linearly in time, and the phase lag between the response of the adlayer and the potential is observed to depend on the sweep rate. The hysteresis in this system is caused by slow ordering/disordering kinetics and critical slowin…
The transition from elastic to plastic deformation in crystalline metals shares history dependence and scale-invariant avalanche signature with other non-equilibrium systems under external loading: dilute colloidal suspensions, plastically-deformed amorphous solids, granular materials, and dislocation-based simulations of crystals. These other systems exhibit transitions with clear analogies to work hardening and yield stress, with many typically undergoing purely elastic behavior only after 'training' through repeated cyclic loading; studies in these other systems show a power law scaling of …
We derive an orthotropic model to describe the cyclic stress-softening of a carbon-filled rubber vulcanizate through multiple stress-strain cycles with increasing values of the maximum strain. We specialize the deformation to pure shear loading. As a result of strain-induced anisotropy following on from initial primary loading, the material may subsequently be described as orthotropic because in pure shear there are three different principal stretches so that the strain-induced anisotropy of the stress response is different in each of these three directions. We derive non-linear orthotropic mo…
Magnetization hysteresis loop $M(H)$ measurements performed on a single crystalline Ba$_{0.63}$K$_{0.37}$BiO$_3$ superconducting thick film reveal pronounced sample geometry dependence of the "second magnetization peak" (SMP), i.e. a maximum in the width of $M(H)$ occurring at the field $H_{\rm SMP}(T)$. In particular, it is found that the SMP vanishes decreasing the film dimension. We argue that the observed sample geometry dependence of the SMP cannot be accounted for by models which assume a vortex pinning enhancement as the origin of the SMP. Our results can be understood considering the t…
Magnetic dynamics of a bulk ferromagnet, a new single crystalline compound Co7(TeO3)4Br6, was studied by ac susceptibility and the related techniques. Very large Arrhenius activation energy of 17.2 meV (201 K) and long attempt time (2x10^(-4)s) span the full spectrum of magnetic dynamics inside a convenient frequency window, offering a rare opportunity for general studies of magnetic dynamics. Within the experimental window the ac susceptibility data build almost ideally semicircular Cole-Cole plots. Comprehensive study of experimental dynamic hysteresis loops of the compound is presented and …
Most of crystalline materials exhibit a hysteresis on their deformation curve when mechanically loaded in alternating directions. This Bauschinger effect is the signature of mechanisms existing at the atomic scale and controlling the materials damage and ultimately their failure. Here, three-dimensional simulations of dislocation dynamics and statistical analyses of the microstructure evolution reveal two original elementary mechanisms. An asymmetry in the dislocation network junctions arising from the stress driven curvatures and the partial reversibility of plastic avalanches give an explana…
Superelastic NiTi tubes are promising candidates for eco-friendly elastocaloric cooling, but their cyclic stability suffers severely from functional degradation. Herein, we investigate the functional degradation of nanocrystalline NiTi tubes via in-depth analysis and find out that it is beneficial to elastocaloric cooling performance. The results show that the functional degradation accompanies with progressive accumulation of residual strain and significant reduction in both hysteresis loop area (D) and forward transformation stress. The accumulation of residual strain arises from phase-trans…
Mechanical stretching behavior of poly(styrene-b-ethylene-co-butylene-b-styrene) (SEBS) triblock copolymer (87 wt% polyethylene-co-butylene (PEB) block, 13 wt% polystyrene (PS) block) was investigated by three different stretching and in situ small angle X ray scattering (SAXS) measurements. Strain energy density function was investigated based on the stress stretching ratio (λ) relationship under uniaxial, planar extension, and equi-biaxial stretching modes. As the result, cross effect of strain represented by second invariants of the deformation tensor (I2) existed and only Ogden model can b…
Most of crystalline materials develop an hysteresis on their deformation curve when a mechanical loading is applied in alternating directions. This effect, also known as the Bauschinger effect, is intimately related to the reversibile part of the plastic deformation and controls the materials damage and ultimately their failure. In the present work, we associate mesoscale Dislocation Dynamics simulations and Finite Element simulations to identify two original dislocation mechanisms at the origin of the traction/compression asymmetry and quantify their impacts on the cyclic behaviour of FCC sin…
Crystalline materials exhibit an hysteresis behaviour when deformed cyclically. The origins of this tension-compression asymmetry have been fully understood only recently as being caused by an asymmetry in the junction strength and a reduced mean free path of dislocations inherited from previous deformation stage. Here, we investigate the saturation stress in fcc single- and poly-crystals using a Crystal Plasticity framework derived from dislocation dynamics simulations. In the absence of plastic localization and damage mechanism, the single-crystal mechanical response eventually saturates. We…
Hysteresis underlies a large number of phase transitions in solids, giving rise to exotic metastable states that are otherwise inaccessible. Here, we report an unconventional hysteretic transition in a quasi-2D material, EuTe4. By combining transport, photoemission, diffraction, and x-ray absorption measurements, we observed that the hysteresis loop has a temperature width of more than 400 K, setting a record among crystalline solids. The transition has an origin distinct from known mechanisms, lying entirely within the incommensurate charge-density-wave (CDW) phase of EuTe4 with no change in …
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the transient response of a binary Lennard-Jones glass subjected to periodic shear deformation. The amorphous solid is modelled as the three-dimensional Kob-Andersen binary mixture at a low temperature. The cyclic loading is applied to slowly annealed, quiescent samples, which induces irreversible particle rearrangements at large strain amplitudes, leading to stress-strain hysteresis and a drift of the potential energy towards higher values. We find that the initial response to cyclic shear near the critical strain amplitude involves disconnected …
