Motivated by recent results on the index of the Dirac operator D=γ^{μ}D_{μ} of QCD on lattice and also by results on topological features of electrons and holes of 2-dimensional graphene, we compute in this paper the Index of D for fermions living on a family of even dimensional lattices denoted as L_{2N} and describing the 2N-dimensional generalization of the graphene honeycomb. The calculation of this topological Index is done by using the direct method based on solving explicitly the gauged Dirac equation and also by using specific properties of the lattices L_{2N} which are shown to be intimately linked with the weight lattices of SU(2N+1). The Index associated with the two leading N=1 and N=2 elements of this family describe precisely the chiral anomalies of graphene and QCD_4. Comments on the method using the spectral flow approach as well as the computation of the topological charges on 2-cycles of 2N-dimensional compact supercell in L_{2N} and applications to QCD_4 are also given.
Building on previous work [N. Read, Phys. Rev. B 58, Z. Dong and T. Senthil, 16262 (1998); Phys. Rev. B 102, 205126 (2020)] on the system of bosons at filling factor $ν= 1$, we derive the Dirac composite fermion theory for a half-filled Landau level from first principles and applying the Hartree-Fock approach in a preferred representation. On the basis of the microscopic formulation, in the long-wavelength limit, we propose a noncommutative field-theoretical description, which in a commutative limit reproduces the Son's theory, with additional terms that may be expected on physical grounds. Th…
In the present essay we review the underlying physical information behind the first concrete example describing a mass dimension one fermion - namely Elko spinors. We start the program exploring the physical information by evaluating the Elko bilinear forms, both within the proper orthochronous Lorentz subgroup as well as within the VSR theory. As we shall see, such structures do not hold the right observance of the Fierz-Pauli-Kofink quadratic relations. Thus, by the aforementioned reasons, we develop a deformation of the Clifford algebra basis. Such protocol can be accomplished by taking pre…
Overlap fermion on the lattice has been shown to properly reproduce topological aspects of gauge fields. In this paper, we review the derivation of Overlap fermion formalism in a torus of three space-time dimensions. Using the formalism, we show how to use the Overlap fermion determinants in the massless and infinite mass limits to construct different continuum topological gauge actions, such as the level-$k$ Chern-Simons action, ``half-CS" term and the mixed Chern-Simons (BF) coupling, in a gauge-invariant lattice UV regulated manner. Taking special Abelian and non-Abelian background fields, …
In this thesis we are interested in understanding how Lorentz symmetry violation can affect some features of fermion dynamics and, perhaps, help to solve some well-known problems in particle physics, such as the origin of neutrino masses and oscillations. Firstly, we consider two Lorentz-Invariance-Violating (LIV) models and investigate the possibility of generating masses and oscillations dynamically for both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos, using non-perturbative methods, such as the Schwinger-Dyson and the effective potential approaches. In our studies, Lorentz symmetric models are extended by…
Three-dimensional gauge theories coupled to fermions can develop interesting nonperturbative dynamics. Here we study in detail the dynamics of $SU(N)$ gauge theories coupled to a Dirac fermion in the rank-two symmetric and antisymmetric representation. We argue that when the Chern-Simons level is sufficiently small the theory develops a quantum phase with an emergent topological field theory. When the Chern-Simons level vanishes, we further argue that a baryon condenses and hence baryon symmetry is spontaneously broken. The infrared theory then consists of a Nambu-Goldstone boson coupled to a …
In this article, we review the dynamics of charge carriers in graphene and related 2D systems from a quantum field theoretical point of view. By allowing the electromagnetic fields to propagate throughout space and constraining fermions to move on a 2D manifold, the effective theory of such systems becomes a non-local version of quantum electrodynamics (QED) dubbed in literature pseudo or reduced QED. We review some aspects of the theory assuming the coupling arbitrary in strength. In particular, we focus on the chiral symmetry breaking scenarios and the analytical structure of the fermion pro…
In this thesis we analyse three aspects of Conformal Field Theories (CFTs). First, we consider correlation functions of descendant states in two-dimensional CFTs. We discuss a recursive formula to calculate them and provide a computer implementation of it. This allows us to obtain any correlation function of vacuum descendants, and for non-vacuum descendants to express the correlator as a differential operator acting on the respective primary correlator. With this code, we study some entanglement and distinguishability measures between descendant states, i.e. the Rényi entropy, trace square di…
Dimensionality aspects of non-minimal electromagnetic couplings are investigated. By means of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, we attain (non-)relativistic interactions related to the non-minimal coupling in three-dimensional spacetime, for both the bosonic and fermionic fields. Next, we establish some comparisons and analyse particular situations in which the external electromagnetic fields are described either by Maxwell or Maxwell-Chern-Simons Electrodynamics. In addition, we consider the situation of a non-minimal coupling for the fermionic field in four dimensions, carry out its dimen…
