In this white paper, we summarize current observations of the baryon census at low redshift (Shull, Smith, & Danforth 2012). Measurements of Lya, O-VI, and broad Lya absorbers, together with more careful corrections for metallicity and ionization fraction, can now account for approximately 60% of the baryons in the intergalactic medium (IGM). An additional 5 +/- 3% may reside in the circumgalactic medium (CGM), 7 +/- 2% in galaxies, and 4 +/- 1.5% in clusters. This still leaves a substantial fraction, 29 +/- 13%, unaccounted for. We suggest improvements in measuring the baryons in major components of the IGM and CGM with future Ultraviolet and X-ray spectrographs. These missions could find and map the missing baryons, the fuel for the formation and chemical evolution of galaxies.
Context: Fast radio bursts are transient radio pulses of extragalactic origin. Their dispersion measure is indicative of the baryon content in the ionized intergalactic medium between the source and the observer. However, inference using unlocalized fast radio bursts is degenerate to the distribution of redshifts of host galaxies. Method: We perform a joint inference of the intergalactic baryon content and the fast radio burst redshift distribution with the use of Bayesian statistics by comparing the likelihood of different models to reproduce the observed statistics in order to infer the most…
The current observational status of the hot (log T(K) > 5.5) warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) remains incomplete. While recent observations from stacking large numbers of Cosmic Web filaments have yielded statistically significant detections, direct measurements of single objects remain scarce. The lack of such a sample currently prevents a robust analysis of the cosmic baryon content composed of the hot WHIM, which could help solve the cosmological missing baryons problem. To improve the search for the missing baryons, we used the EAGLE simulation. Our aim is to understand the metal enric…
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) probe the total column density of free electrons in the intergalactic medium (IGM) along the path of propagation though the dispersion measures (DMs) which depend on the baryon mass fraction in the IGM, i.e., $f_{\rm IGM}$. In this letter, we investigate the large-scale clustering information of DMs to study the evolution of $f_{\rm IGM}$. When combining with the Planck 2018 measurements, we could give tight constraints on the evolution of $f_{\rm IGM}(z)$ from about $10^4$ FRBs with the intrinsic DM scatter of $30(1+z)~ \rm pc/cm^3$ spanning 80% of the sky and redshif…
The problem of missing baryons in the local universe remains an open question. One propose alternative is that at low redshift missing baryons are in the form of the Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM). In order to test this idea, we present a detailed analysis of X-ray high-resolution spectra of six extragalactic sources, Mrk 421, 1ES 1028+511, 1ES 1553+113, H2356-309, PKS 0558-504 and PG 1116+215, obtained with the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer to search for signals of WHIM and/or circumgalactic medium (CGM) X-ray absorbing gas. We fit the X-ray absorption with the IONeq model,…
The missing baryon problem is one of the major unsolved problems in astronomy. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are bright millisecond pulses with unknown origins. The dispersion measure of FRBs is defined as the electron column density along the line of sight, and accounts for every ionized baryon. Here we measure the baryon content of the Universe using 22 localized FRBs. Unlike previous works that fixed the value of dispersion measure of FRB host galaxies and ignored the inhomogeneities of the intergalactic medium (IGM), we use the probability distributions of dispersion measures contributed by hos…
Previously derived Faraday rotation constraints on the volume-filling intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) have used analytic models that made a range of simplifying assumptions about magnetic field evolution in the intergalactic medium and did not consider the effect of baryonic feedback on large-scale structures. In this work we revise existing Faraday rotation constraints on the IGMF using a numerical model of the intergalactic medium from the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulation that includes a sophisticated model of the baryonic feedback. We use the IllustrisTNG model to calculate the rota…
Known as the "Missing Baryon Problem", about one-third of baryons in the local universe remain unaccounted for. The missing baryons are thought to reside in the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) of the cosmic web filaments, which are challenging to detect. Recent Chandra X-ray observations used a novel stacking analysis and detected an OVII absorption line toward the sightline of a luminous quasar, hinting that the missing baryons may reside in the WHIM. To explore how the properties of the OVII absorption line depend on feedback physics, we compare the observational results with prediction…
The dispersion measure (DM)--redshift relation of fast radio bursts (FRBs) has been proposed as a potential new tool for probing intergalactic medium (IGM) and for studying cosmology. However, the poor knowledge of the baryon fraction in the IGM ($f_{\mathrm{IGM}}$) and its degeneracy with cosmological parameters impose restrictions on the cosmological applications of FRBs. Furthermore, DMs contributed by the IGM ($\mathrm{DM_{IGM}}$) and host galaxy ($\mathrm{DM_{host}}$), important cosmological quantities, cannot be exactly extracted from observations, which would bring uncontrolled systemat…
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are a promising new probe for astronomy and cosmology. Thanks to their extragalactic and cosmological origin, FRBs could be used to study the intergalactic medium (IGM) and the cosmic expansion. It is expected that numerous FRBs with identified redshifts will be available in the near future through the identification of their host galaxies or counterparts. $\rm DM_{IGM}$, the contribution from IGM to the observed dispersion measure (DM) of FRB, carries the key information about IGM and the cosmic expansion history. We can thus study the evolution of the universe by usi…
A complete census of baryons in the late universe is a long-standing challenge due to the intermediate temperate and rarefied character of the majority of cosmic gas. To gain insight into this problem, we extract measurements of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect from the cross-correlation of angular redshift fluctuations maps, which contain precise information about the cosmic density and velocity fields, and CMB maps high-pass filtered using aperture photometry; we refer to this technique as ARF-kSZ tomography. Remarkably, we detect significant cross-correlation for a wide range o…

It has been known for decades that the observed number of baryons in the local universe falls about 30-40% short of the total number of baryons predicted by Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis, as inferred from density fluctuations of the Cosmic Microwave Background and seen during the first 2-3 billion years of the universe in the so called Lyman-alpha Forest. A theoretical solution to this paradox locates the missing baryons in the hot and tenuous filamentary gas between galaxies, known as the warm-hot intergalactic medium. However, it is difficult to detect them there because the largest by far consti…

It has been pointed out that hypermagnetic helicity decay at the electroweak symmetry breaking may have produced the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe through the chiral anomaly in the standard model of particle physics. Although fully helical magnetic field that can adequately produce the observed baryon asymmetry is not strong enough to explain the origin of the intergalactic magnetic field inferred by the Fermi satellite, the mixture of helical and nonhelical primordial magnetic fields may explain both baryogenesis and the intergalactic magnetic fields simultaneously. We first show …
Context. A significant fraction of the predicted baryons remains undetected in the local universe. We adopted the common assumption that a large fraction of the missing baryons corresponds to the hot (log T(K) = 5.5-7) phase of the Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM). We base our missing baryons search on the scenario whereby the WHIM has been heated up via accretion shocks and galactic outflows, and is concentrated towards the filaments of the Cosmic Web. Aims. Our aim is to improve the observational search of the poorly detected hot WHIM. Methods. We detect the filamentary structure within …
Baryonic feedback can significantly modify the spatial distribution of matter on small scales and create a bulk relative velocity between the dominant cold dark matter and the hot gas. We study the consequences of such bulk motions using two high resolution hydrodynamic simulations, one with no feedback and one with very strong feedback. We find that relative velocities of order $100\ \kms$ are produced in the strong feedback simulation whereas it is much smaller when there is no feedback. Such relative motions induce dipole distortions to the gas, which we quantify by computing the dipole cor…
X-Ray Absorption by the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium in the Hercules Supercluster
We analyze the sources of free electrons that produce the large dispersion measures, DM $\approx 300-1600$ (in units cm$^{-3}$ pc), observed toward fast radio bursts (FRBs). Individual galaxies typically produce DM $\sim 25-60$ cm$^{-3}$ pc from ionized gas in their disk, disk-halo interface, and circumgalactic medium. Toward an FRB source at redshift $z$, a homogeneous IGM containing a fraction $f_{\rm IGM}$ of cosmological baryons will produce DM $= (935~{\rm cm}^{-3}~{\rm pc}) f_{\rm IGM} \, h_{70}^{-1} I(z)$, where $I(z) = (2/3 Ω_m)[ \{ Ω_m(1+z)^3 + Ω_Λ \}^{1/2} - 1 ]$. A structured IGM of…
Today, the majority of the cosmic baryons in the Universe are not observed directly, leading to an issue of "missing baryons" at low redshift. Cosmological hydrodynamical simulations have indicated that a significant portion of them will be converted into the so-called Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM), with gas temperature ranging between 10$^5$-10$^7$K. While the cooler phase of this gas has been observed using O VI and Ne VIII absorbers at UV wavelengths, the hotter fraction detection relies mostly on observations of O VII and O VIII at X-ray wavelengths. Here, we target the forbidden li…
We present the KODIAQ-Z survey aimed to characterize the cool, photoionized gas at 2.2<z<3.6 in 202 HI-selected absorbers with 14.6<log N(HI)<20, i.e., the gaseous interface between galaxies and the intergalactic medium (IGM). We find that the 14.6<log N(HI)<20 gas at 2.2<z<3.6 can be metal-rich gas (-1.6<[X/H]<-0.2) as seen in damped Ly-alpha absorbers (DLAs); it can also be very metal-poor ([X/H]<-2.4) or even pristine gas ([X/H]<-3.8) not observed in DLAs, but commonly observed in the IGM. For 16<log N(HI)<20 absorbers, the frequency of pristine absorbers is about 1%-10%, while for 14.6<log…
In the near future galaxy surveys will target Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) to unveil the nature of the dark energy. It has been suggested that the observability of LAEs is coupled to the large scale properties of the intergalactic medium. Such coupling could introduce distortions into the observed clustering of LAEs, adding a new potential difficulty to the interpretation of upcoming surveys. We present a model of LAEs that incorporates Lyman-alpha radiative transfer processes in the interstellar and intergalactic medium. The model is implemented in the GALFORM semi-analytic model of g…
The Enrichment of the Intergalactic Medium with Adiabatic Feedback I: Metal Cooling and Metal Diffusion
We analyze the IllustrisTNG simulations to study the mass, volume fraction and phase distribution of gaseous baryons embedded in the knots, filaments, sheets and voids of the Cosmic Web from redshift $z=8$ to redshift $z=0$. We find that filaments host more star-forming gas than knots, and that filaments also have a higher relative mass fraction of gas in this phase than knots. We also show that the cool, diffuse Intergalactic Medium (IGM; $T<10^5 \, {\rm K}$, $ n_{\rm H}<10^{-4}(1+z) \, {\rm cm^{-3}}$) and the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM; $ 10^5 \, {\rm K} <T<10^7 \, {\rm K}$, $ n_{\r…
Upcoming measurements of the highly redshifted 21cm line with next-generation radio telescopes such as HERA and SKA will provide the intriguing opportunity to probe dark matter (DM) physics during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR), Cosmic Dawn, and the Dark Ages. With HERA already under construction, there is a pressing need to thoroughly understand the impact of DM physics on the intergalactic medium (IGM) during these epochs. We present first results of a hydrodynamic simulation suite with $2 \times 512^3$ particles in a $(100 \ h^{-1} \ \text{Mpc})^3$ box with DM annihilation and baryonic coo…
