Now a days mobile phones are most often used for data communication rather than voice calls. Due to this change in user behavior, there is a need to improve the QoS received by the user. One of the ways of improving the QoS is an efficient scheduling algorithm which incorporates the needs of the users and variation in channel condition. The parameters used to measure the efficiency of the scheduling algorithms are the Jain Fairness Index and the overall system throughput. In this paper we have proposed a variance based scheduling algorithm which selects the user who has the highest variance of data transmitted in a given time frame as a parameter for scheduling. This ensures that eventually, the users transmit almost equal amounts of data regardless of channel condition. The simulation results shows that the proposed algorithm achieves high Jain Fairness Index of 0.92 with a lesser drop in the system throughput 18% as compared to Dynamically altering Proportionally Fair Algorithm's 20% using the Proportionally Fair Algorithm as reference.
Supporting quality of service (QoS) guarantees for diverse multimedia services are the primary concerns for WiMAX (IEEE 802.16) networks. A scheduling scheme that satisfies QoS requirements has become more important for wireless communications. We propose a downlink scheduling scheme called adaptive priority-based downlink scheduling (APDS) for providing QoS guarantees in IEEE 802.16 networks. APDS comprises two major components: priority assignment and resource allocation. Different service-type connections primarily depend on their QoS requirements to adjust priority assignments and dispatch…
This paper proposes a fair and efficient QoS scheduling scheme for IEEE 802.16 BWA systems that satisfies both throughput and delay guarantee to various real and non-real time applications. The proposed QoS scheduling scheme is compared with an existing QoS scheduling scheme proposed in literature in recent past. Simulation results show that the proposed scheduling scheme can provide a tight QoS guarantee in terms of delay, delay violation rate and throughput for all types of traffic as defined in the WiMAX standard, thereby maintaining the fairness and helps to eliminate starvation of lower p…
The development of self-interference (SI) cancelation technology makes full-duplex (FD) communication possible. Considering the quality of service (QoS) of flows in small cells densely deployed scenario with limited time slot (TS) resources, this paper introduces the FD communication into the concurrent scheduling problem of millimeter-wave (mmWave) wireless backhaul network. We propose a QoS-aware FD concurrent scheduling algorithm to maximize the number of flows with their QoS requirements satisfied. Based on the contention graph, the algorithm makes full use of the FD condition. Both residu…
In the scenario where small cells are densely deployed, the millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless backhaul network has been widely used. However, mmWave is easily blocked by obstacles, and how to forward the data of the blocked flows is still a significant challenge. To ensure backhauling capacity, the quality of service (QoS) requirements of flows should be satisfied. In this paper, we investigate the problem of optimal scheduling to maximize the number of flows satisfying their QoS requirements with relays exploited to overcome blockage. To achieve a practical solution, we propose a relay-assist…

With the rapid development of high-speed railway (HSR), how to provide the passengers with multimedia services has attracted increasing attention. A key issue is to develop an effective scheduling algorithm for multiple services with different quality of service (QoS) requirements. In this paper, we investigate the downlink service scheduling problem in HSR network taking account of end-to-end deadline constraints and successfully packet delivery ratio requirements. Firstly, by exploiting the deterministic high-speed train trajectory, we present a time-distance mapping in order to obtain the h…
Quality of Service (QoS) is now regarded as a requirement for all networks in managing resources like bandwidth and avoidance of network impairments like packet loss, jitter, and delay. Media transfer or streaming would be virtually impossible if QoS parameters were not used even if the streaming protocols were perfectly designed. QoS Scheduling classes help in network traffic optimization and the priority management of packets. This paper presents an analysis of QoS scheduling classes using video traffic in a MANET. The main objective was to identify a scheduling class that provides better Qo…
In this work we consider the problem of downlink resource allocation for proportional fairness of long term received rates of data users and quality of service for real time sessions in an OFDMA-based wireless system. The base station allocates available power and bandwidth to individual users based on long term average received rates, QoS based rate constraints and channel conditions. We solve the underlying constrained optimization problem and propose an algorithm that achieves the optimal allocation. Numerical evaluation results show that the proposed algorithm provides better QoS to voice …
In this paper, a new technique for cross layer design, based on present Eb/N0 (bit energy per noise density) ratio of the connections and target values of the Quality of Service (QoS) information parameters from MAC layer, is proposed to dynamically select the Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) at the PHY layer for WiMAX Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) networks. The QoS information parameter includes New Connection Blocking Probability (NCBP), Hand off Connection Dropping Probability (HCDP) and Connection Outage Probability (COP). In addition, a Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) b…
In current cellular networks, schedulers allocate wireless channel resources to users based on instantaneous channel gains and short-term moving averages of user rates and queue lengths. By using only such short-term information, schedulers ignore the users' service history in previous cells and, thus, cannot guarantee long-term Quality of Service (QoS) when users traverse multiple cells with varying load and capacity. In this paper, we propose a new Long-term Lookback Scheduling (LLS) framework, which extends conventional short-term scheduling with long-term QoS information from previously tr…
The number of LTE users and their applications has increased significantly in the last decade, which increased the demand on the mobile network. LTE-Advanced comes with many features that can support this increasing demand. LTE-Advanced supports Heterogeneous Networks deployment, in which it consists of a mix of macro-cells, remote radio heads, and low power nodes such as Pico-cells, and Femto-cells. Embedding this mix of base-stations in a macro-cellular network allows for achieving significant gains in coverage, throughput and system capacity compared to the use of macro-cells only. These ba…
The vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) based on dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) is a distributed communication system, in which all the nodes share the wireless channel with carrier sense multiple access/collision avoid (CSMA/CA) protocol. However, the backoff mechanism of CSMA/CA in the channel contention might cause uncertain transmission delay and impede a certain quality of service (QoS) of applications. Moreover, there still exists a possibility of parlous data-packets collision, especially for broadcast or non-acknowledgement (NACK) transmissions. The original contributions of t…
Packet and flow scheduling algorithms for WiMAX has been a topic of interest for a long time since the very inception of WiMAX networks. WiMAX offers advantages particularly in terms of Quality of service it offers over a longer range at the MAC level. In our work, we propose two credit based scheduling schemes one in which completed flows distributes the left over credits equally to all higher priority uncompleted flows(ODRREDC) and another in which completed flows give away all the excess credits to the highest priority uncompleted flow(ODRRSDC). Both the schemes are compatible with 802.16 M…

This paper addresses resource allocation for a computing system with multiple resources supporting heterogeneous soft real-time applications subject to Quality of Service (QoS) constraints on failures to meet processing deadlines. We develop a general outer bound on the feasible QoS region for non-clairvoyant resource allocation policies, and an inner bound for a natural class of policies based on dynamicall…
With the development of self-interference (SI) cancelation technology, full-duplex (FD) communication becomes possible. FD communication can theoretically double the spectral efficiency. When the time slot (TS) resources are limited and the number of flows is large, the scheduling mechanism of the flows becomes more important. Therefore, the effectiveness of FD scheduling mechanism for the flows is studied in millimeter wave wireless backhaul network with the limited TS resources. We proposed a full duplex concurrent scheduling algorithm based on coalition game (FDCG) to maximize the number of…
This paper considers the problem of service placement and task scheduling on a three-tiered edge-to-cloud platform when user requests must be met by a certain deadline. Time-sensitive applications (e.g., augmented reality, gaming, real-time video analysis) have tight constraints that must be met. With multiple possible computation centers, the "where" and "when" of solving these requests becomes paramount when meeting their deadlines. We formulate the problem of meeting users' deadlines while minimizing the total cost of the edge-to-cloud service provider as an Integer Linear Programming (ILP)…
Providing minimum quality-of-service (QoS) in crowded wireless communications systems, with high user density, is challenging due to the network structure with limited transmit power budget and resource blocks. Smart resource allocation methods, such as user scheduling, power allocation, and modulation and coding scheme selection, must be implemented to cope with the challenge. Aiming to enhance the number of served users with minimum QoS in the downlink (DL) channel of crowded extra-large scale massive multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems, in this paper we propose a QoS-aware join…
WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) technology has emerged in response to the increasing demand for multimedia services in the internet broadband networks. WiMAX standard has defined five different scheduling services to meet the QoS (Quality of Service) requirement of multimedia applications and this paper investigates one specific scheduling service, i.e. UGS scheduling. In parallel, it was observed that in the difference of the traditional quality assessment approaches, nowadays, current researches are centered on the user perception of the quality, the existing scheduli…
Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANET) are expected to have great potential to improve both traffic safety and comfort in the future. When many vehicles want to access data through roadside unit, data scheduling become an important issue. In this paper, we identify some challenges in roadside based data access. To address these challenges we first review some existing scheduling schemes. We then propose a priority scheduling and finally show that using this idea can increase QOS compare to previous algorithms.
Quality of Service(QoS) in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) though a challenge, becomes a necessity because of its applications in critical scenarios. Providing QoS for users belonging to various profiles and playing different roles, becomes the need of the hour. In this paper, we propose proportional share scheduling and MAC protocol (PS2-MAC) model. It classifies users based on their profile as High Profiled users (HP), Medium Profiled users (MP) and Low profiled users (LP) and assigns proportional weights. Service Differentiation for these three service classes is achieved through, rationed …
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is a promising technology to cope with the expected exponential increase in data traffic in 5G networks. mmWave networks typically require a very dense deployment of mmWave base stations (mmBS). To reduce cost and increase flexibility, wireless backhauling is needed to connect the mmBSs. The characteristics of mmWave communication, and specifically its high directional- ity, imply new requirements for efficient routing and scheduling paradigms. We propose an efficient scheduling method, so-called schedule-oriented optimization, based on matching theory th…

With the proliferation of mobile applications, Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) has been proposed to help mobile devices save energy and improve computation performance. To further improve the quality of service (QoS) of MCC, cloud servers can be deployed locally so that the latency is decreased. However, the computational resource of the local cloud is generally limited. In this paper, we design a threshold-based policy to improve the QoS of MCC by cooperation of the local cloud and Internet cloud resources, which takes the advantages of low latency of the local cloud and abundant computational r…
With the fast development of wireless technologies, wireless applications have invaded various areas in people's lives with a wide range of capabilities. Guaranteeing Quality-of-Service (QoS) is the key to the success of those applications. One of the QoS requirements, service frequency, is very important for tasks including multimedia transmission in the Internet of Things. A service frequency constraint denotes the length of time period during which a link can transmit at least once. Unfortunately, it has not been well addressed yet. Therefore, this paper proposes a new framework to schedule…
Mobile edge computing pushes computationally-intensive services closer to the user to provide reduced delay due to physical proximity. This has led many to consider deploying deep learning models on the edge -- commonly known as edge intelligence (EI). EI services can have many model implementations that provide different QoS. For instance, one model can perform inference faster than another (thus reducing latency) while achieving less accuracy when evaluated. In this paper, we study joint service placement and model scheduling of EI services with the goal to maximize Quality-of-Servcice (QoS)…
Various middleboxes are ubiquitously deployed in networks to perform packet processing functions, such as firewalling, proxy, scheduling, etc., for the flows passing through them. With the explosion of network traffic and the demand for multiple types of network resources, it has never been more challenging for a middlebox to provide Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees to grouped flows. Unfortunately, all currently existing fair queueing algorithms fail in supporting hierarchical scheduling, which is necessary to provide QoS guarantee to the grouped flows of multiple service classes. In this p…
To satisfy the increasing demand for multimedia services in broadband Internet networks, the WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Acces) technology has emerged as an alternative to the wired broadband access solutions. It provides an Internet connection to broadband coverage area of several kilometers in radius by ensuring a satisfactory quality of service (QoS), it's an adequate response to some rural or inaccessible areas. Unlike DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) or other wired technology, WiMAX uses radio waves and can provide point-to-multipoint (PMP) and point-to-point (P2P) modes.…
Conventional heterogeneous-traffic scheduling schemes utilize zero-delay constraint for real-time services, which aims to minimize the average packet delay among real-time users. However, in light or moderate load networks this strategy is unnecessary and leads to low data throughput for non-real-time users. In this paper, we propose a heuristic scheduling scheme to solve this problem. The scheme measures and assigns scheduling priorities to both real-time and non-real-time users, and schedules the radio resources for the two user classes simultaneously. Simulation results show that the propos…
We present a distributed algorithm for joint power control, routing and scheduling in multihop wireless networks. The algorithm also provides for Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees, namely, end-to-end mean delay guarantees and hard deadline guarantees, for different users. It is easily implementable and works by giving local dynamic priority to flows requiring QoS, the priority being a function of the queue length at the nodes. We provide theoretical bounds for the stability properties of the algorithm. We also compare the performance of the algorithm with other existing algorithms by means o…

In each group of users, users equipments (UE)s are assigned resource blocks (RB)s from all in band carriers. We use a utility proportional fairness (PF) approach in the utility percentage of the application running on the UE. Each user is guaranteed a minimum quality of service (QoS) with a priority criterion that is based …
The IEEE 802.11e standard introduced by IEEE 802.11 Task Group E (TGe) enhances the Quality of Service (QoS) by means of HCF Controlled Channel Access (HCCA). The scheduler of HCCA allocates Transmission Opportunities (TXOPs) to QoS-enabled Station (QSTA) based on their TS Specifications (TSPECs) negotiated at the traffic setup time so that it is only efficient for Constant Bit Rate (CBR) applications. However, Variable Bit Rate (VBR) traffics are not efficiently supported as they exhibit nondeterministic profile during the time. In this paper, we present a dynamic TXOP assignment Scheduling A…

The algorithm employs fractional Multi-Commodity Flow (MCF) that determines the widths of the interconnections as well as the routes of the flits. The MCF is rounded to a periodic TDM schedule which is translated to local periodic control of switches a…

Multi-connectivity is emerging as a promising solution to provide reliable communications and seamless connectivity for the millimeter-wave frequency range. Due to the blockage sensitivity at such high frequencies, connectivity with multiple cells can drastically increase the network performance in terms of throughput and reliability. However, an inefficient link scheduling, i.e., over and under-provisioning of connections, can lead either to high interference and energy consumption or to unsatisfied user's quality of service (QoS) requirements. In this work, we present a learning-based soluti…
In this paper we propose a new scheduling algorithm called Real Time Scheduling (RTS) which uses virtual nodes for self stabilization. This algorithm deals with all the contributing components of the end-to-end travelling delay of data packets in sensor network and with virtual nodes algorithm achieves QoS in terms of packet delivery, multiple connections, better power management and stable routes in case of failure. RTS delays packets at intermediate hops (not just prioritizes them) for a duration that is a function of their deadline. Delaying packets allows the network to avoid hot spotting …
One of the major challenges in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is the mitigation of collisions due to simultaneous transmissions by multiple nodes over a common channel which are located in a proximity. TDMA-based channel access provides energy-efficient and collision-free transmissions. It is especially suitable for traffic with periodic transmission patterns and guaranteed QoS requirements. For that reason, a large number of TDMA-scheduling algorithms are available in the literature, and consequently, a good number of survey papers on TDMA-scheduling algorithms have been written. In this wor…
We consider a scheduler for the downlink of a wireless channel when only partial channel-state information is available at the scheduler. We characterize the network stability region and provide two throughput-optimal scheduling policies. We also derive a deterministic bound on the mean packet delay in the network. Finally, we provide a throughput-optimal policy for the network under QoS constraints when real-time and rate-guaranteed data traffic may be present.
With the explosive growth of mobile traffic demand, densely deployed small cells underlying macrocells have great potential for 5G and beyond wireless networks. In this paper, we consider the problem of supporting traffic flows with diverse QoS requirements by exploiting three high frequency bands, i.e., the 28GHz band, the E-band, and the Terahertz (THz) band. The cooperation of the three bands is helpful for maximizing the number of flows with their QoS requirements satisfied. To solve the formulated nonlinear integer programming problem, we propose a triple-band scheduling scheme which can …
In this paper, we investigate dynamic resource scheduling (i.e., joint user, subchannel, and power scheduling) for downlink multi-channel non-orthogonal multiple access (MC-NOMA) systems over time-varying fading channels. Specifically, we address the weighted average sum rate maximization problem with quality-of-service (QoS) constraints. In particular, to facilitate fast resource scheduling, we focus on developing a very low-complexity algorithm. To this end, by leveraging Lagrangian duality and the stochastic optimization theory, we first develop an opportunistic MC-NOMA scheduling algorithm…
IEEE 802.11e standard defines two Medium Access Control (MAC) functions to support Quality of Service (QoS) for wireless local area networks: Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) and HCF Controlled Channel Access (HCCA). EDCA provides fair prioritized QoS support while HCCA guarantees parameterized QoS for the traffics with rigid QoS requirements. The latter shows higher QoS provisioning with Constant Bit Rate (CBR) traffics. However, it does not efficiently cope with the fluctuation of the Variable Bit Rate (VBR) video streams since its reference scheduler generates a schedule based on …
In Software-Defined Networking (SDN)-enabled cloud data centers, live migration is a key approach used for the reallocation of Virtual Machines (VMs) in cloud services and Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) in Service Function Chaining (SFC). Using live migration methods, cloud providers can address their dynamic resource management and fault tolerance objectives without interrupting the service of users. However, in cloud data centers, performing multiple live migrations in arbitrary order can lead to service degradation. Therefore, efficient migration planning is essential to reduce the impact…
