While bulk properties of stable nuclei are successfully reproduced by mean-field theories employing effective interactions, the dependence of the centroid energy of the electric giant dipole resonance on the nucleon number A is not. This problem is cured by considering many-particle correlations beyond mean-field theory, which we do within the "Quasiparticle Time Blocking Approximation". The electric giant dipole resonances in $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca, and $^{208}$Pb are calculated using two new Skyrme interactions.
Various sum rules for multiple giant dipole resonance states are derived. For the triple giant dipole resonance states, the energy-weighted sum of the transition strengths requires a model to be related to those of the single and double giant dipole resonance states. It is also shown that the non-diagonal matrix elements of the double commutator between the dipole operator and the nuclear Hamiltonian give useful identities for the excitation energy and transition strength of each excited state. Using those identities, the relationship between width of the single dipole state and those of the m…
Double-dipole excitations in ^{208}Pb are analyzed within a microscopic model explicitly treating 2p2h-excitations. Collective states built from such 2p2h-excitations are shown to appear at about twice the energy of the isovector giant dipole resonance, in agreement with the experimental findings. The calculated cross section for Coulomb excitation at relativistic energies cannot explain simultaneously the measured single-dipole and double-dipole cross sections, however.
A closed expression is obtained for the cross-section for Coulomb excitation of levels of the giant dipole resonance of given angular momentum and phonon number. Applications are made to the Goldhaber-Teller and Steinwedel-Jensen descriptions of the resonance, at non-relativistic and relativistic bombarding energies.
The role of anharmonic effects on the excitation of the double giant dipole resonance is investigated in a simple macroscopic model.Perturbation theory is used to find energies and wave functions of the anharmonic ascillator. The cross sections for the electromagnetic excitation of the one- and two-phonon giant dipole resonances in energetic heavy-ion collisions are then evaluated through a semiclassical coupled-channel calculation. It is argued that the variations of the strength of the anharmonic potential should be combined with appropriate changes in the oscillator frequency,in order to keep…
The effect of deformation on the excitation of multiple giant dipole resonances is studied. Analytical expressions are derived in the framework of the interacting boson model for the energies and E1 properties of giant dipole resonances in spherical and deformed nuclei, and a numerical treatment of transitional nuclei is proposed. Coulomb-excitation cross sections are calculated in $^{238}$U and in the samarium isotopes.
The shape fluctuations due to thermal effects in the giant dipole resonance (GDR) observables are calculated using the exact free energies evaluated at fixed spin and temperature. The results obtained are compared with Landau theory calculations done by parameterizing the free energy. The Landau theory is found to be insufficient when the shell effects are dominating.
A fully consistent relativistic random phase approximation is applied to study the systematic behavior of the isovector giant dipole resonance of nuclei along the $β$-stability line in order to test the effective Lagrangians recently developed. The centroid energies of response functions of the isovector giant dipole resonance for stable nuclei are compared with the corresponding experimental data and the good agreement is obtained. It is found that the effective Lagrangian with an appropriate nuclear symmetry energy, which can well describe the ground state properties of nuclei, could also re…
Main properties (strength function, energy-dependent transition density, branching ratios for direct nucleon decay) of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance in several medium-heavy mass spherical nuclei are described within a continuum-RPA approach, taking into account the smearing effect. All model parameters used in the calculations are taken from independent data. Calculation results are compared with available experimental data.
Collisional damping widths of giant dipole excitations are calculated in Thomas-Fermi approximation by employing the microscopic in-medium cross-sections of Li and Machleidt and the phenomenological Gogny force. The results obtained in both calculations compare well, but account for about 25-35% of the observed widths in $^{120}Sn$ and $^{208}Pb$ at finite temperatures.
The Balian-Veneroni variational approach has been implemented using a 3-dimensional time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) code with realistic Skyrme interactions and used to investigate the mass dispersions from giant dipole resonances in S-32 and Sn-132 decaying through particle emission. The fluctuations obtained are shown to be quantitatively larger than the standard TDHF results.
A semiclassical description of multiple giant resonance excitation and decay that incorporates incoherent fluctuation contributions of the Brink-Axel type is developed. Numerical calculations show that the incoherent contributions are important at low to intermediate bombarding energies.
The electric dipole moments (EDMs) of neutron-odd nuclei with even protons are systematically evaluated. We first derive the relation between the EDM and the magnetic moment operators by making use of the core polarization scheme. This relation enables us to calculate the EDM of neutron-odd nuclei without any free parameters. From this calculation, one may find the best atomic system suitable for future EDM experiments.
The branching ratios for E1 transitions between the spin-dipole (SD) and Gamow-Teller (GT) giant resonances in $^{90}$Nb and $^{208}$Pb are evaluated. Assuming the main GT-state has the wave function close to that for the "ideal" GT-state, we reduced the problem to calculate the SD and GT strength functions. These strength functions are evaluated within an extended continuum-RPA approach.
We report on the first microscopic study of the properties of two-phonon giant resonances in deformed nuclei. The cross sections of the excitation of the giant dipole and the double giant dipole resonances in relativistic heavy ion collisions are calculated. We predict that the double giant dipole resonance has a one-bump structure with a centroid 0.8 MeV higher than twice energy for the single giant dipole resonance in the reaction under consideration. The width of the double resonance equals to 1.33 of that for the single resonance.
The effects of ground-state correlations on the damping of isovector giant dipole resonances in $LS$ closed shell nuclei $^{16}$O and $^{40}$Ca are studied using extended random-phase-approximation (RPA) approaches derived from the time-dependent density-matrix theory. It is pointed out that unconventional two-body amplitudes of one particle--three hole and three particle--one hole types which are neglected in most extended RPA theories play an important role in the fragmentation of isovector dipole strength.
We study the systematics of the giant dipole resonance width $Γ$ in hot rotating nuclei as a function of temperature $T$, spin $J$ and mass $A$. We compare available experimental results with theoretical calculations that include thermal shape fluctuations in nuclei ranging from A=45 to A=208. Using the appropriate scaled variables, we find a simple phenomenological function $Γ(A,T,J)$ which approximates the global behavior of the giant dipole resonance width in the liquid drop model. We reanalyze recent experimental and theoretical results for the resonance width in Sn isotopes and $^{208}$Pb…
The isovector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR) in even-even Nd isotopes from A=124 to A=160 is studied in the framework of time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) with Skyrme forces SkI3, SVbas, SLy5 and SLy6. The dipole strength is calculated and compared with the experimental data on photon absorption cross section $σ_γ$. An overall agreement between them is obtained. The dipole strengths in $ ^{124-140}\text{Nd}$ and $^{152-160}\text{Nd} $ are predicted. In addition, the correlation between the quadrupole deformation parameter $β_{2}$ and the splitting $ΔE/ \bar{E}_{m}$ of the giant dipole resonan…
Nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for neutrinoless double beta decays (DBDs) are required for studying neutrino physics beyond the standard model by DBD. The experimental spin-dipole (SD) giant resonance energy and the SD strength are shown for the first time to be closely related to the DBD-NME, and are used for studying the spin-isospin correlation and the quenching of the axial-vector coupling. So they are used to help the theoretical model calculation of the DBD-NME.
We present results of microscopic calculations of the strength function, S(E), and alpha-particle excitation cross sections sigma(E) for the isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR). An accurate and a general method to eliminate the contributions of spurious state mixing is presented and used in the calculations. Our results provide a resolution to the long standing problem that the nuclear matter incompressibility coefficient, K, deduced from sigma(E) data for the ISGDR is significantly smaller than that deduced from data for the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR).
We evaluate uncertainty of peak energy of giant dipole resonance (GDR), propagated from uncertainty of parameters of Skyrme interaction. The Monte Carlo calculation of the random phase approximation using randomized Skyrme parameters is performed. Under the condition that the correlations between each of the Skyrme parameters is considered, the GDR peak energy has the uncertainty of $\sim$ 1 MeV irrespective of nuclear mass and is strongly correlated with the Skyrme parameters, in present calculations. This serves a guide for a new parametrization of effective interactions.
A fully symmetry unrestricted Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory extended to include pairing correlations is used to calculate properties of the isovector giant dipole resonances of the deformed open-shell nuclei 172Yb (axially deformed), 188Os (triaxially deformed), and 238U (axially deformed), and to demonstrate good agreement with experimental data on nuclear photo-absorption cross-sections for two different Skyrme force parametrizations of the energy density functional: SkP and SLy4.
A systematic microscopic study of the anharmonic properties of the double giant dipole resonance (DGDR) has been carried out, for the first time, for nuclei with mass number $A$ spanning the whole mass table. It is concluded that the corrections of the energy centroid of the $J^π = 0^+$ and $2^+$ components of the DGDR from its harmonic limit are negative, have a value of the order of few hundred keV and follow an $A^{-1}$ dependence.
The low-energy isoscalar dipole response of heavy spherical nuclei is studied by using a semiclassical model, based on the solution of the linearized Vlasov kinetic equation for finite Fermi systems. In this translation-invariant model the excitations of the center of mass motion are exactly separated from the internal ones. The low-energy dipole strength function displays three resonance structures in the energy region up to 15 MeV. Calculations of the velocity fields associated with the resonance structures at the centroid energies show a vortex (toroidal) character of two overlying resonanc…
Electromagnetic dipole absorption cross-sections of transitional nuclei with large-amplitude shape fluctuations are calculated in a microscopic way by introducing the concept of Instantaneous Shape Sampling. The concept bases on the slow shape dynamics as compared to the fast dipole vibrations. The elctromagnetic dipole strength is calculated by means of RPA for the instantaneous shapes, the probability of which is obtained by means of IBA. Very good agreement with the experimental absorption cross sections near the nucleon emission threshold is obtained.
The width of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) at finite temperature T in Sn-120 is calculated within the Phonon Damping Model including the neutron thermal pairing gap determined from the modified BCS theory. It is shown that the effect of thermal pairing causes a smaller GDR width at T below 2 MeV as compared to the one obtained neglecting pairing. This improves significantly the agreement between theory and experiment including the most recent data point at T = 1 MeV.
The evolution of the Dipole Response in nuclei with strong neutron excess is studied in the Hartree-Fock plus Random Phase Approximation with Skyrme forces. We find that the neutron excess increases the fragmentation of the isovector Giant Dipole Resonance, while pushing the centroid of the distribution to lower energies beyond the mass dependence predicted by the collective models. The radial separation of proton and neutron densities associated with a large neutron excess leads to non vanishing isoscalar transition densities to the GDR states, which are therefore predicted to be excited also…
The giant dipole resonance (GDR) in deformed nuclei is analyzed using the self-consistent separable random-phase-approximation (SRPA) with Skyrme forces SkT6, SkM$^*$, SLy6 and SkI3. The deformed nuclei $^{150}$Nd and $^{238}$U are used as representative rare-earth and actinide samples. Dependencies of the dipole strength distributions on some basic characteristics of the Skyrme functional and nuclear matter properties (isoscalar and isovector effective masses, time-odd contributions) are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the fragmentation structure of the GDR strength which are shown…
We present an approach that includes temperature-dependent shell effects and fluctuations of the pairing field in the thermal shape fluctuation model (TSFM). We apply this approach to study the width of giant dipole resonance (GDR) in $^{97}$Tc, $^{120}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb. Our results demonstrate that the TSFM that includes pairing fluctuations can explain the recently observed quenching in the GDR width. We also show that to validate pairing prescriptions and the parameters involved, we require more and precise data.
It is shown that a consistent description of magnetic dipole properties in transitional nuclei can be obtained in the interacting boson model-2 by F-spin breaking mechanism, which is associated with differences between the proton and neutron deformations. In particular, the long standing anomalies observed in the $g$-factors of the Os-Pt isotopes are resolved by a proper inclusion of F-spin breaking.
We implement the Brink-Axel hypothesis for the excitation of the double giant dipole resonance (DGDR): The background states which couple to the one-phonon giant dipole resonance are themselves capable of dipole absorption. These states (and the ones which couple to the two-phonon resonance) are described in terms of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble of random matrices. We use second-order time-dependent perturbation theory and calculate analytically the ensemble-averaged cross section for excitation of the DGDR. Numerical calculations illuminate the mechanism and the dependence of the cross se…
The electric dipole excitation of various nuclei is calculated with a Random Phase Approximation phenomenological approach. The evolution of the strength distribution in various groups of isotopes, oxygen, calcium, zirconium and tin, is studied. The neutron excess produces $E1$ strength in the low energy region. Indexes to measure the collectivity of the excitation are defined. We studied the behavior of proton and neutron transition densities to determine the isoscalar or isovector nature of the excitation. We observed that in medium-heavy nuclei the low-energy $E1$ excitation has characteris…
We construct a three-dimensional analytically soluble model of the nonlinear effects in Coulomb excitation of multiphonon Giant Dipole Resonances (GDR) based on the SU(2,1) algebra. The full 3-dimensional model predicts further enhancement of the Double GDR (DGDR) cross sections at high bombarding energies. Enhancement factors for DGDR measured in thirteen different processes with various projectiles and targets at different bombarding energies are well reproduced with the same value of the nonlinearity parameter with the exception of the anomalous case of $^{136}$Xe which requires a larger va…
The basic version of the semi-microscopic particle-hole dispersive optical model is implemented to describe main properties of the Gamow-Teller and charge-exchange giant spin-monopole resonances in medium-heavy closed-shell parent nuclei. Calculation results obtained for $^{48}Ca$, $^{90}Zr$, $^{132}Sn$, and $^{208}Pb$ are compared with available experimental data.
Isoscalar dipole strength distributions in spherical medium- and heavy-mass nuclei are calculated within random phase approximation (RPA) or quasiparticle RPA. Different Skyrme-type interactions corresponding to incompressibilities in the range 200 - 250 MeV are used. The results are discussed in comparison with existing data on isoscalar giant dipole resonances. Two main issues are raised, firstly the calculated giant resonance energies are somewhat higher than the observed ones, and secondly a sizable fraction of strength is predicted below 20 MeV which needs to be experimentally confirmed.
We study the nature of the low-lying dipole strength in neutron-rich nuclei, often associated to the Pygmy Dipole Resonance. The states are described within the Hartree-Fock plus RPA formalism, using different parametrizations of the Skyrme interaction. We show how the information from combined reactions processes involving the Coulomb and different mixtures of isoscalar and isovector nuclear interactions can provide a clue to reveal the characteristic features of these states.
In a recent Letter [1] an overall agreement with the experimental data for the excitation of the single and double giant dipole resonances in relativistic heavy ion collision in 136Xe and 208Pb nuclei has been reported. We point out that this agreement is achieved by a wrong calculation of the DGDR excitation mechanism. We also argue that the agreement with the data for the widths of resonances is achieved by an unrealistically large value of a model parameter. We study the effect of the spreading widths on the excitation probabilities of the double giant dipole resonance. We solve the coupled-channels equations for the excitation of the giant dipole resonance and the double giant dipole resonance. Taking Pb+Pb collisions as example, we study the resulting effect on the excitation amplitudes, and cross sections as a function of the width of the states and of the bombarding energy.
The occurrence of the low-lying charge-exchange non spin-flip dipole modes below the giant resonance in neutron-rich nuclei is predicted on the basis of nuclear density functional theory. The ground and excited states are described in the framework of the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and the proton-neutron quasiparticle-random-phase approximation employing a Skyrme-type energy density functional. The model calculations are performed for the spherical neutron-rich Ca, Ni, and Sn isotopes. It is found that the low-lying states appear sensitively to the shell structure associated with …
The properties of the Isoscalar Giant Dipole Resonance (ISGDR) and its electromagnetic structure are investigated within a semiclassical nuclear Fermi-Fluid dynamical approach. Microscopical calculations pointing to a ISGDR distribution splitted into two main broad structures is confirmed within the presented macroscopic approach by the occurence of a ''low-lying'' and a ''high-lying'' state, that are nothing else than the first two overtones of the same resonance. Macroscopically they are pictured as a combination of compressional and vortical nuclear flows. In the second part of the paper th…
Isoscalar dipole nuclear response reveals the low- and high-energy resonances. The nature of isoscalar dipole resonances in heavy spherical nuclei is studied by using the translation-invariant kinetic model of small oscillations of finite Fermi systems. Calculations of the velocity field at the centroid energy show a pure vortex character of the low-energy isoscalar dipole resonance in spherical nuclei and confirm the anisotropic compression character of the high-energy one. The evolution of the velocity field in dependence on the excitation energy of the nucleus within the resonance width is …
Sum rules for the total- and scissors-mode M1 strength in odd-A nuclei are derived within the single-j interacting boson-fermion model. We discuss the physical content and geometric interpretation of these sum rules and apply them to ^{167}Er and ^{161}Dy. We find consistency with the former measurements but not with the latter.
The effective surface approximation is extended accounting for derivatives of the symmetry energy density per particle. Using the analytical isovector surface energy constants within the Fermi-liquid droplet model, one obtains energies and sum rules of the isovector dipole resonance structure in a reasonable agreement with the experimental data and other theoretical approaches.
The E1 strength is systematically analyzed in very neutron-rich Sn nuclei, beyond $^{132}$Sn until $^{166}$Sn, within the Relativistic Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation. The great neutron excess favors the appearance of a deformed ground state for $^{142-162}$Sn. The evolution of the low-lying strength in deformed nuclei is determined by the interplay of two factors, isospin asymmetry and deformation: while greater neutron excess increases the total low-lying strength, deformation hinders and spreads it. Very neutron rich deformed nuclei may not be as good candidates as stable spherical…
We investigate how well the shape parameterizations are applicable for studying the giant dipole resonance (GDR) in nuclei, in the low temperature and/or high spin regime. The shape fluctuations due to thermal effects in the GDR observables are calculated using the actual free energies evaluated at fixed spin and temperature. The results obtained are compared with Landau theory calculations done by parameterizing the free energy. We exemplify that the Landau theory could be inadequate where shell effects are dominating. This discrepancy at low temperatures and high spins are well reflected in …
Theoretical studies of low-lying dipole strength in even-even spherical nuclei within the relativistic quasiparticle time blocking approximation (RQTBA) are presented. The RQTBA developed recently as an extension of the self-consistent relativistic quasiparticle random phase approximation (RQRPA) enables one to investigate effects of coupling of two-quasiparticle excitations to collective vibrations within a fully consistent calculation scheme based on covariant energy density functional theory. Dipole spectra of even-even $^{130}$Sn -- $^{140}$Sn and $^{68}$Ni -- $^{78}$Ni isotopes calculated…
Low-energy dipole excitations have been investigated theoretically in N=50, several N=82 isotones and the Z=50 Sn isotopes. For this purpose a method incorporating both HFB and multi-phonon QPM theory is applied. A concentration of one-phonon dipole strength located below the neutron emission threshold has been calculated in these nuclei. The analysis of the corresponding neutron and proton dipole transition densities allows to assign a genuine pattern to the low-energy excitations and making them distinct from the conventional GDR modes. Analyzing also the QRPA wave functions of the states we…
The possible constraints on the poorly determined symmetry part of the effective nuclear Hamiltonians or effective energy functionals, i.e., the so-called symmetry energy S(rho), are very much under debate. In the present work, we show that the value of the symmetry energy associated with Skyrme functionals, at densities rho around 0.1 fm^{-3}, is strongly correlated with the value of the centroid of the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) in spherical nuclei. Consequently, the experimental value of the GDR in, e.g., 208Pb can be used as a constraint on the symmetry energy, leading to 23.3 MeV < S(rh…
In this work, we have studied the isovector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR) in even-even Sm isotopes within time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) with four Skyrme forces SLy6, SVbas, SLy5 and UNEDF1. The approach we have followed is somewhat similar to the one we did in our previous work in the region of Neodymium (Nd, Z=60) [\href{https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1402-4896/ab73d8}{Physica Scripta (2020)}]. We have calculated the dipole strength of $ ^{128-164}\text{Sm}$, and compared with the available experimental data. An overall agreement between them is obtained. The dipole strength…
The semimicroscopic particle-hole dispersive optical model (PHDOM) is implemented to describe main properties of Isoscalar Giant Multipole Resonances (up to L=3) in medium-heavy closed-shell nuclei. The main properties are characterized by the strength distribution, transition density, partial and total probabilities of direct one-nucleon decay. Calculation results obtained for the 208Pb nucleus are compared with available experimental data.
The energy of the charge-exchange Anti-analog Giant Dipole Resonance (AGDR) has been calculated for the 208Pb isotope using the state-of-the-art fully self-consistent relativistic proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation based on the Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model. It is shown that the AGDR centroid energy is very sensitively related to the corresponding neutron-skin thickness. The neutron-skin thickness of 208Pb has been determined very precisely by comparing the theoretical results with the available experimental data on E(AGDR). The result DR(pn)= 0.161(42) agrees nice…
We propose the universal approach to describe spreading widths of monopole, dipole and quadrupole giant resonances in heavy and superheavy spherical nuclei. Our approach is based on the ideas of the random matrix distribution of the coupling between one-phonon and two-phonon states generated in the random phase approximation. We use the Skyrme interaction SLy4 as our model Hamiltonian to create a single-particle spectrum and to analyze excited states of the doubly magic nuclei $^{132}$Sn, $^{208}$Pb and $^{310}$126. Our results demonstrate that the universal approach enables to describe gross …
