Visual perception is a challenging problem in part due to illumination variations. A possible solution is to first estimate an illumination invariant representation before using it for recognition. The object albedo and surface normals are examples of such representations. In this paper, we introduce a multilayer generative model where the latent variables include the albedo, surface normals, and the light source. Combining Deep Belief Nets with the Lambertian reflectance assumption, our model can learn good priors over the albedo from 2D images. Illumination variations can be explained by changing only the lighting latent variable in our model. By transferring learned knowledge from similar objects, albedo and surface normals estimation from a single image is possible in our model. Experiments demonstrate that our model is able to generalize as well as improve over standard baselines in one-shot face recognition.

The goal of photometric stereo is to measure the precise surface normal of a 3D object from observations with various shading cues. However, non-Lambertian surfaces influence the measurement accuracy due to irregular shading cues. Despite deep neural networks have been employed to simulate the performance of non-Lambertian surfaces, the error in specularities, shadows, and crinkle regions is hard to be reduced. In order to address this challenge, we here propose a photometric stereo network that incorporates Lambertian priors to better measure the surface normal. In this paper, we use the init…
We introduce a novel multi-view stereo (MVS) method that can simultaneously recover not just per-pixel depth but also surface normals, together with the reflectance of textureless, complex non-Lambertian surfaces captured under known but natural illumination. Our key idea is to formulate MVS as an end-to-end learnable network, which we refer to as nLMVS-Net, that seamlessly integrates radiometric cues to leverage surface normals as view-independent surface features for learned cost volume construction and filtering. It first estimates surface normals as pixel-wise probability densities for eac…

This paper addresses the problem of photometric stereo, in both calibrated and uncalibrated scenarios, for non-Lambertian surfaces based on deep learning. We first introduce a fully convolutional deep network for calibrated photometric stereo, which we call PS-FCN. Unlike traditional approaches that adopt simplified reflectance models to make the problem tractable, our method directly learns the mapping from reflectance observations to surface normal, and is able to handle surfaces with general and unknown isotropic reflectance. At test time, PS-FCN takes an arbitrary number of images and thei…

Multispectral photometric stereo(MPS) aims at recovering the surface normal of a scene from a single-shot multispectral image captured under multispectral illuminations. Existing MPS methods adopt the Lambertian reflectance model to make the problem tractable, but it greatly limits their application to real-world surfaces. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network named NeuralMPS to solve the MPS problem under general non-Lambertian spectral reflectances. Specifically, we present a spectral reflectance decomposition(SRD) model to disentangle the spectral reflectance into geometric compon…
The problem of estimating a surface shape from its observed reflectance properties still remains a challenging task in computer vision. The presence of global illumination effects such as inter-reflections or cast shadows makes the task particularly difficult for non-convex real-world surfaces. State-of-the-art methods for calibrated photometric stereo address these issues using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that primarily aim to capture either the spatial context among adjacent pixels or the photometric one formed by illuminating a sample from adjacent directions. In this paper, we bri…

The light field (LF) reconstruction is mainly confronted with two challenges, large disparity and the non-Lambertian effect. Typical approaches either address the large disparity challenge using depth estimation followed by view synthesis or eschew explicit depth information to enable non-Lambertian rendering, but rarely solve both challenges in a unified framework. In this paper, we revisit the classic LF rendering framework to address both challenges by incorporating it with advanced deep learning techniques. First, we analytically show that the essential issue behind the large disparity and…

We consider the non-Lambertian object intrinsic problem of recovering diffuse albedo, shading, and specular highlights from a single image of an object. We build a large-scale object intrinsics database based on existing 3D models in the ShapeNet database. Rendered with realistic environment maps, millions of synthetic images of objects and their corresponding albedo, shading, and specular ground-truth images are used to train an encoder-decoder CNN. Once trained, the network can decompose an image into the product of albedo and shading components, along with an additive specular component. Ou…

We propose a depth estimation method from a single-shot monocular endoscopic image using Lambertian surface translation by domain adaptation and depth estimation using multi-scale edge loss. We employ a two-step estimation process including Lambertian surface translation from unpaired data and depth estimation. The texture and specular reflection on the surface of an organ reduce the accuracy of depth estimations. We apply Lambertian surface translation to an endoscopic image to remove these texture and reflections. Then, we estimate the depth by using a fully convolutional network (FCN). Duri…

This paper aims at recovering the shape of a scene with unknown, non-Lambertian, and possibly spatially-varying surface materials. When the shape of the object is highly complex and that shadows cast on the surface, the task becomes very challenging. To overcome these challenges, we propose a coordinate-based deep MLP (multilayer perceptron) to parameterize both the unknown 3D shape and the unknown reflectance at every surface point. This network is able to leverage the observed photometric variance and shadows on the surface, and recover both surface shape and general non-Lambertian reflectan…

This paper proposes an uncalibrated photometric stereo method for non-Lambertian scenes based on deep learning. Unlike previous approaches that heavily rely on assumptions of specific reflectances and light source distributions, our method is able to determine both shape and light directions of a scene with unknown arbitrary reflectances observed under unknown varying light directions. To achieve this goal, we propose a two-stage deep learning architecture, called SDPS-Net, which can effectively take advantage of intermediate supervision, resulting in reduced learning difficulty compared to a …
Most problems involving simultaneous localization and mapping can nowadays be solved using one of two fundamentally different approaches. The traditional approach is given by a least-squares objective, which minimizes many local photometric or geometric residuals over explicitly parametrized structure and camera parameters. Unmodeled effects violating the lambertian surface assumption or geometric invariances of individual residuals are encountered through statistical averaging or the addition of robust kernels and smoothness terms. Aiming at more accurate measurement models and the inclusion …

Despite their practical success, we still have limited knowledge of how they work and the demand for such an understanding is evergrowing. In this regard, one crucial aspect of deep neural network classifiers that can help us deepen our knowledge about their decision-making behavior is to investigate their decision boundaries. Nevertheless, this is contingent upon having access to samples populating the areas near the decision boundary. To achieve this, we propose a novel a…

We presented a novel approach of optimising a deep neural network through regularisation of net- work architecture. The closed set nature of deep networks forces them to choose from one of the known classes leading to such artifacts. Recognition in the real world is open set, i.…
Deep neural networks are state-of-the-art models for understanding the content of images, video and raw input data. To address this challenge, this paper presents a hardware-oriented deep learning algorithm, named as the Deep Adaptive Network, which attempts to exploit the sparsity in the neural connections. From fully connected neural networks to convolutional neural networks, the learned parameters within a neural network have been primarily relegated to the linear parameters (e.g., convolutional filters). The non-linear functions (e.g., activation functions) have largely remained, with few exceptions in recent years, parameter-less, static throughout training, and seen limited variation in design. Largely ignored by the deep learning community, radial basis function (RBF) networks provide an interesting mechanism for learning more complex non-linear activation functions in addition to the linea…
