By direct quenching or post-annealing followed by quenching, we have successfully obtained a series of KxFe2-ySe2 samples with different properties. It is found that the samples directly quenched in the cooling process of growth show superconductivity and the one cooled with furnace is insulating even though their stoichiometries are similar. The sample cooled with furnace can be tuned from insulating to superconducting by post-annealing and then quenching. Based on the two points mentioned above, we conclude that the superconducting state in KxFe2-ySe2 is metastable, and quenching is the key point to achieve the superconducting state. The similar stoichiometries of all the non-superconducting and superconducting samples indicate that the iron valence doesn't play a decisive role in determining whether a KxFe2-ySe2 sample is superconducting. Combining with the result got in the KxFe2-ySe2 thin films prepared by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), we argue that our superconducting sample partly corresponds to the phase without iron vacancies as evidenced by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and the insulating sample mainly corresponds to the phase with the $\sqrt{5}\times\sqrt{5}$ vacancy order. Quenching may play a role of freezing the phase without iron vacancies.
Sr2RuO4, a leading-candidate spin-triplet superconductor and a highly anisotropic quasi-two-dimensional type-II superconductor, provides unique opportunity to study unconventional as well as conventional vortex phases. To investigate its vortex-matter phases, we studied the ac susceptibility of Sr2RuO4 for fields parallel to the RuO2 plane by adapting two different thermal processes: In addition to the ordinary field sweep (FS) process, we newly employed the "each-point field cooling (EPFC)" process, in which the superconductivity is once thermally destroyed before collecting the data. We find…
Applying the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, transitions between metastable states of a superconducting ring are investigated in the presence of an external magnetic field. It is shown that if the ring exhibits several metastable states at a particular magnetic field, the transition from one metastable state to another one is governed by both the relaxation time of the absolute value of the order parameter tau_{|psi|} and the relaxation time of the phase of the order parameter tau_{phi}. We found that the larger the ratio tau_{|psi|}tau_{phi} the closer the final state will be to the…
Room-temperature superconductivity was recently discovered in carbonaceous sulfur hydride (C-S-H) close to 3\,Mbar. We report significant differences in the superconducting response of C-S-H, with a maximum $T_{C}$ of 191(1)\,K, below a 1\,Mbar. Variations in intensity of the C-H Raman modes reveal carbon content can vary between crystals synthesized with the same photo-induced method. Synchrotron single crystal x-ray diffraction identifies polymorphism with increasing degrees of covalency. These unique metastable states are highly sensitive to thermodynamic pathways.
The stable and metastable states of different configurations of a loop in the form of an eight is studied in the presence of a magnetic field. We find that for certain configurations the current is equal to zero for any value of the magnetic field leading to a magnetic field independent superconducting state. The state with fixed phase circulation becomes unstable when the momentum of the superconducting electrons reaches a critical value. At this moment the kinetic energy of the superconducting condensate becomes of the same order as the potential energy of the Cooper pairs and it leads to an…
Reentrant superconductivity has been observed in the candidate spin-triplet superconductor UTe$_2$ as a function of the magnetic field applied along the hard axis. Resistivity measurements have shown, a broadened superconducting transition appears near the minimal $T_c$, highlighting the importance of superconducting fluctuations in this regime. We present a phenomenological study assuming a field-driven first-order transition between two superconducting states. We show that with quenched randomness, inhomogeneity-enhanced superconducting fluctuations near the transition could naturally accoun…
Enhancements of superconducting properties were observed in FeSe wires using a quenching technique. Zero resistivity was achieved at about 10 K in quenched wires, which is about 2 K higher than that of polycrystalline FeSe bulk. Furthermore, transport Jc of quenched wires showed three times higher than that of furnace-cooled wires. In contrast, the quenched polycrystalline FeSe bulks did not show the enhancement of Tc. The quenching technique is a greatly promising for fabricating FeSe wires with high Tc and high Jc, and quenched FeSe wires have high potential for superconducting wire applicat…
We propose a superconducting qubit design, based on a tunable RF-SQUID and nanowire kinetic inductors, which has a dramatically reduced transverse electromagnetic coupling to its environment, so that its excited state should be metastable. If electromagnetic interactions are in fact responsible for the current excited-state decay rates of superconducting qubits, this design should result in a qubit lifetime orders of magnitude longer than currently possible. Furthermore, since accurate manipulation and readout of superconducting qubits is currently limited by spontaneous decay, much higher fid…
We report detailed magnetic, transport and thermodynamic properties of metastable Rh3Bi14 single crystals in superconducting and normal state. We show that Rh3Bi14 is nearly isotropic, weak to intermediately coupled BCS superconductor, whereas the electronic resistivity above superconducting Tc = 2.94 K is dominated by the phonon scattering in the large unit cell with pores filled by Bi atoms. Superconductivity is strongly influenced by the nature of atoms that fill the voids in the crystal structure.
The vortex lattice (VL) symmetry and orientation in clean type-II superconductors depends sensitively on the host material anisotropy, vortex density and temperature, frequently leading to rich phase diagrams. Typically, a well-ordered VL is taken to imply a ground state configuration for the vortex-vortex interaction. Using neutron scattering we studied the VL in MgB2 for a number of field-temperature histories, discovering an unprecedented degree of metastability in connection with a known, second-order rotation transition. This allows, for the first time, structural studies of a well-ordere…
Evolutionary searches predicted a number of ternary phases that could be synthesized at pressures of 100-300~GPa. $P6_3/mmc$ CaSH$_2$, $Pnma$ CaSH$_2$, $Cmc2_1$ CaSH$_6$, and $I\bar{4}$ CaSH$_{20}$ were composed of a Ca-S lattice along with H$_2$ molecules coordinated in a ``side-on'' fashion to Ca. The H-H bond lengths in these semiconducting phases were elongated because of H$_2$ $σ\rightarrow$ Ca d donation, and Ca d$\rightarrow$ H$_2$ $σ^*$ back-donation, via a Kubas-like mechanism. $P\bar{6}m2$ CaSH$_3$, consisting of two-dimensional HS and CaH$_2$ sheets, was metastable and metallic abov…
We study thermal instability and formation of local hot spots in a driven nonlinear NbN superconducting microwave resonator. White noise injected into the resonator results in transitions between the metastable states via a process consisting of two stages. In the first stage, the input noise entering the system induces fluctuations in the resonator mode. While, in the second one, these mode fluctuations result in phase transitions of the hot spot due to induced temperature fluctuations. The associated noise-activated escape rate is calculated theoretically, and also measured experimentally by…
It is shown that in bilayer conducting structures in crossed electric and magnetic fields of a special configuration (the fields should have opposite signs in the adjacent layers) the dependence of the energy of a pair of equally charged carriers on the momentum of the pair has a local minimum. This minimum corresponds to a bound state of the pair. The local minimum is separated from the absolute minimum by a large energy barrier. That provides the stability of the bound state with respect to different scattering processes. If the number of the pairs is macroscopic, a phase transition into a m…
Geometrical metastability, observed in superconducting type I tin flat strips, has been previously proposed as a principle for particle detection. The energy deposition of an incoming beta-particle induces the rupture of the metastability and consequently the penetration of multiquantum flux tubes into a superconducting tin strip. We present here the first absorption spectra from two beta sources, which demonstrate the linearity and energy-resolution of these detectors (presented at the 6th International Workshop on Low Temperature Detectors for Dark Matter and Neutrinos (LTD-6), Interlaken, S…
Photoexcitations on a superconductor using ultrafast nir-infrared (NIR) pulses, whose energy is much higher than the superconducting energy gap, are expected to suppress/destroy superconductivity by breaking Cooper pairs and excite quasiparticles from occupied state to unoccupied state far above the Fermi level. This appears to be true only for small pumping fluence. Here we show that the intense NIR pumping has different effect. We perform an intense NIR pump, c-axis terahertz probe measurement on an electron-doped cuprate superconductor Pr$_{0.88}$LaCe$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ with T$_c$=22 K. The me…
A microscopic model is constructed which is able to describe multiple magnetic flux transitions as observed in recent ultra-low temperature tunnel experiments on an aluminum superconducting ring with normal metal - insulator - superconductor junctions [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{70}, 064514 (2004)]. The unusual multiple flux quantum transitions are explained by the formation of metastable states with large vorticity. Essential in our description is the modification of the pairing potential and the superconducting density of states by a sub-critical value of the persistent current which modulates the…
Using small-angle neutron scattering, we investigated the behavior of a metastable vortex lattice state in MgB2 as it is driven towards equilibrium by an AC magnetic field. This shows an activated behavior, where the AC field amplitude and cycle count are equivalent to, respectively, an effective "temperature" and "time". The activation barrier increases as the metastable state is suppressed, corresponding to an aging of the vortex lattice. Furthermore, we find a cross-over from a partial to a complete suppression of metastable domains depending on the AC field amplitude, which may empirically…
In the background of the strong magnetic field the vacuum is suggested to possess an electromagnetically superconducting phase characterised by the emergence of inhomogeneous quark-antiquark vector condensates which carry quantum numbers of the charged rho mesons. The rho-meson condensates are inhomogeneous due to the presence of the stringlike defects ("the rho vortices") which are parallel to the magnetic field (the superconducting vacuum phase is similar to the mixed Abrikosov phase of a type-II superconductor). In agreement with these expectations, we have observed the presence of the rho …
We scrutinize the enhanced superconducting performance of melt quench Bismuth based Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi-2212) superconductor. The superconducting properties of melt quenched Bi-2212 (Bi2212-MQ) sample are compared with non-melted Bi2212-NM and Bi1.4Pb0.6Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi-2223). Crystal structure and morphology of the samples are studied using X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) techniques. The high field (14T) magneto-transport and DC/AC magnetic susceptibility techniques are extensively used to study the superconducting properties of the investigated samples. The superconduc…
Pressure-induced superconductivity and structural phase transitions in phosphorous (P) are studied by resistivity measurements under pressures up to 170 GPa and fully $ab-initio$ crystal structure and superconductivity calculations up to 350 GPa. Two distinct superconducting transition temperature (T$_{c}$) vs. pressure ($P$) trends at low pressure have been reported more than 30 years ago, and for the first time we are able to reproduce them and devise a consistent explanation founded on thermodynamically metastable phases of black-phosphorous. Our experimental and theoretical results form a …
We report the synthesis and superconducting properties of a metastable form of the known superconductor NaxCoO2*yH2O (x ~ 1/3, y ~ 4x). Instead of using the conventional bromine-acetonitrile mixture for sodium deintercalation, we use an aqueous bromine solution. Using this method, we oxidize the sample to a point that the sodium cobaltate becomes unstable, leading to formation of other products if not controlled. This compound has the same structure as the reported superconductor, yet it exhibits a systematic variation of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) as a function of time. I…
Measurements of magneto-resistivity and magnetic susceptibility were performed on single crystals of superconducting Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ close to the conditions of optimal doping. The high quality of the investigated samples allows us to reveal a dynamic scaling behaviour associated with a vortex-glass phase transition in the limit of weak degree of quenched disorder. Accordingly, the dissipative component of the ac susceptibility is well reproduced within the framework of Havriliak-Negami relaxation, assuming a critical power-law divergence for the characteristic correlatio…
Structure of the intermediate state in type-I superconducting lead (Pb) is shown to be very sensitive to the ramp rate of an applied magnetic field. The configurations of resulting static patterns depend sensitively on the shape of the specimen. In particular, geometric barrier, present in the samples with rectangular cross-section, plays an important role in determining the sharp boundary between the phases of different topology. We propose that seemingly laminar (stripe) pattern obtained as a result of the fast field ramp is simply an imprint left behind by the fast-moving flux tubes. Our re…
The self-consistent solutions of a nonlinear Ginzburg--Landau equations, which describe the behavior of a superconducting plate of thickness 2D in a magnetic field H parallel to its surface (provided that there are no vortices inside the plate), are studied. We distinguish two types of superconductors according to the behavior of their magnetization M(H) in an increasing field. The magnetization can vanish either by a first order phase transition (type-I superconductors), or by a second order (type-II). The boundary S_{I-II}, which separates two regions (I and II) on the plane of variables (D,…
The nematic electronic state and its associated nematic critical fluctuations have emerged as potential candidates for superconducting pairing in various unconventional superconductors. However, in most materials their coexistence with other magnetically-ordered phases poses significant challenges in establishing their importance. Here, by combining chemical and hydrostatic physical pressure in FeSe$_{0.89}$S$_{0.11}$, we provide a unique access to a clean nematic quantum phase transition in the absence of a long-range magnetic order. We find that in the proximity of the nematic phase transiti…
Hydrogen-rich compounds have been extensively studied both theoretically and experimentally in the quest for novel high-temperature superconductors. Reports on sulfur-hydride attaining metallicity under pressure and exhibiting superconductivity at temperatures as high as 200 K have spurred an intense search for room-temperature superconductors in hydride materials. Recently, compressed phosphine was reported to metallize at pressures above 45 GPa, reaching a superconducting transition temperature (T$_{c}$) of 100 K at 200 GPa. However, neither the exact composition nor the crystal structure of…
Gallium (Ga) displays several metastable phases. Superconductivity is strongly enhanced in the metastable $\mathrmβ$-Ga with a critical temperature $T_\mathrm{c}= 6.04(5)\,\mathrm{K}$, while stable $\mathrmα$-Ga has a much lower $T_\mathrm{c}<1.2\,\mathrm{K}$. Here we use a membrane-based nanocalorimeter to initiate the transition from $\mathrmα$-Ga to $\mathrmβ$-Ga on demand, as well as study the specific heat of the two phases on one and the same sample. The in-situ transformation is initiated by bringing the temperature to about $10\,\mathrm{K}$ above the melting temperature of $\mathrmα$-G…
Intense debate has recently arisen regarding the photoinduced changes to the iron-chalcogenide superconductors, including the enhancement of superconductivity and a metastable state. Here, by employing high energy resolution, we directly observe the melting of superconductivity on ultrafast timescales. We demonstrate a distinctly nonequilibrium response on short timescales, where the gap fills in prior to the destruction of the superconducting peak, followed by a metastable response. We propose that the former is due to pair phase decoherence and speculate that the latter is due to the increas…
A vortex solid with self-generated randomness is found theoretically in a frustrated Josephson junction array (JJA) under external magnetic field with anisotropic couplings. Vorticies induced by external magnetic field develop stripes parallel to the direction of weaker coupling. It is shown analytically that there is a continuous, gapless band of metastable states in which stripes are deformed randomly by transverse undulation. The vortex solid with the frozen undulation in a metastable state freely slides along the direction of stronger coupling, thereby destroying ordering of phases even at…
We have found a sharp transition at T_c2=350 mK in the vortex creep rate of a single crystal of (U_1-xTh_x)Be_13 with T_c=523 mK (x=0.0275). For T<<T_c2, no creep of vortices is observed in a time scale of 10^5 s, while for T_c2<T<T_c, vortices creep at very high rates (30 % of decay from a metastable configuration in the first 10^5 s at T=400 mK). The sharp transition occurs at the same temperature at which the second jump in the specific heat appears in these samples. Similar low levels of creep rates have been reported by us in the low-T superconducting phase of UPt_3.
We report the first energy loss spectrum obtained with a geometrically metastable type I superconducting tin strip irradiated by the beta-emission of S-35. (Nucl. Instr. Meth. A, in press)
The properties of RbBi$_2$, a 4.15 K superconductor, were investigated using magnetic field, pressure and neutron diffraction. Under hydrostatic pressure, an almost 50 % reduction of T$_c$ is observed, linked to a low Debye temperature estimated at 165 K. The resistivity and magnetic susceptibility were measured on quenched and slow-cooled polycrystalline samples. The resistivity follows a low temperature power-law dependence in both types of samples, while the diamagnetic susceptibility, $χ$, is dependent on the sample cooling history. Slow-cooled samples have a $χ= -1$ while quenched samples…
The quantum phase-coherent behavior of superconducting weak links (WL) is often quenched in the finite voltage state, due to the heat dissipation and related thermal hysteresis. The latter can be reduced by improving heat evacuation and/or by lowering the critical current, so that a phase-dynamic regime is obtained, albeit over a narrow bias-current and temperature range. Here we demonstrate that an inductive shunt with well-chosen parameters introduces unexpected nonlinear dynamics that destabilize an otherwise stable fixed point in the dissipative branch. This leads to a nonhysteretic behavi…
The case of ac transport at in-phase alternating applied magnetic fields for a superconducting rectangular strip with finite thickness has been investigated. The applied magnetic field is considered perpendicular to the current flow. We present numerical calculations assuming the critical state model of the current distribution and ac loss for various values of aspect ratio, transport current and applied field amplitude. A rich phenomenology is obtained due to the metastable nature of the critical state. We perform a detailed comparison with the analytical limits and we discuss their applicabi…
We report the anisotropy of the upper critical fields mu0Hc2(T) and thermally-activated flux flow (TAFF) behavior of quenched KxFe2-ySe2. Even though the post-annealing and quenching process enhances the superconducting volume fraction, it has a minor effect on the upper critical fields for H//c and H//ab. Analysis of the angular-dependence of resistivity rho_ab(theta,H) indicates that it follows the scaling law based on the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory and the anisotropy Gamma(T) increases with decreasing temperature with Gamma(T) ~ 3.6 at 27 K. The resistivity of quenched sample e…
We theoretically give an infinite number of metastable crystal structures for the superconducting sulfur hydride H$_{x}$S under pressure. It has been thought that theoretically predicted structures of H$_{2}$S and H$_{3}$S exhibit low and high $T_{\rm c}$ in the experiment, respectively. The newly found structures are long-period modulated crystals where slab-like H$_{2}$S and H$_{3}$S regions intergrow in a microscopic scale. The extremely small formation enthalpy for the H$_{2}$S--H$_{3}$S boundary indicated with the first-principles calculations suggests possible alloying of these phases th…
We report on the direct observation of vortex states confined in equilateral and isosceles triangular dots of weak pinning amorphous superconducting thin films with a scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscope. The observed images illustrate not only pieces of a triangular vortex lattice as commensurate vortex states, but also incommensurate vortex states including metastable ones. We comparatively analyze vortex configurations found in different sample geometries and discuss the symmetry and stability of commensurate and incommensurate vortex configurations against deform…
Superconducting fluctuations (SF) in SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ (characterized by superconducting transition temperature $T_{c} \simeq 52.3$ K) are investigated by means of isothermal high-resolution dc magnetization measurements. The diamagnetic response to magnetic fields up to 1 T above $T_{c}$ is similar to what previously reported for underdoped cuprate superconductors and it can be justified in terms of metastable superconducting islands at non-zero order parameter lacking of long-range coherence because of strong phase fluctuations. In the high-field regime ($H \gtrsim 1.5$ T) scaling arg…
We consider the real part of the conductivity, σ_1(ω), arising from classical phase fluctuations in a model for high-T_c superconductors. We show that the frequency integral of that conductivity, \int_0^\infty σ_1 dω, is non-zero below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, provided there is some quenched disorder in the system. Furthermore, for a fixed amount of quenched disorder, this integral at low temperatures is proportional to the zero-temperature superfluid density, in agreement with experiment. We calculate σ_1(ω) explicitly for a model of overdamped phase fluctuations.
We have studied non-equilibrium phase transitions in the vortex lattice in superconducting MgB2, where metastable states are observed in connection with an intrinsically continuous rotation transition. Using small-angle neutron scattering and a stop-motion technique, we investigated the manner in which the metastable vortex lattice returns to the equilibrium state under the influence of an ac magnetic field. This shows a qualitative difference between the supercooled case which undergoes a discontinuous transition, and the superheated case where the transition to the equilibrium state is conti…
The one-particle spectral function of a state formed by superconducting (SC) clusters is studied via Monte Carlo techniques. The clusters have similar SC amplitudes but randomly distributed phases. This state is stabilized by the competition with anti-ferromagnetism, after quenched disorder is introduced. Fermi arcs between the critical temperature Tc and the cluster formation temperature scale T* are observed, similarly as in the pseudo-gap state of the cuprates. The arcs originate at metallic regions in between the neighboring clusters that present large SC phase differences.
Diamond Si is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap that is the basis of modern semiconductor technology. Although many metastable forms of Si were observed using diamond anvil cells for compression and chemical precursors for synthesis, no metallic phase at ambient conditions has been reported thus far. Here we report the prediction of pure metallic Si allotropes with open channels at ambient pressure, unlike a cubic diamond structure in covalent bonding networks. The metallic phase termed P6/m-Si6 can be obtained by removing Na after pressure release from a novel Na-Si clathrate called P…

Transition-metal-dichalcogenides own a variety of structures as well as electronic properties which can be modulated by structural variations, element substitutions, ion or molecule intercalations, etc. However, there is very limited knowledge on metastable phases of this family, especially the precise regulation of structural changes and accompanied evolution of electronic properties. Here, based on a new developed field-effect transistor with solid ion conductor as the gate dielectric, we report a controllable structural and electronic phase transitions in metastable MoS$_2$ thin flakes driv…
We study s-wave superconductivity in the attractive Hubbard model in an applied magnetic field and assume the extreme Pauli limit where the orbital critical field is much greater than the Zeeman critical field. We work at a coupling corresponding roughly to the peak $T_c$ in the BCS to BEC crossover window and retain the crucial amplitude and phase fluctuations. At low field, as expected, the superconductor undergoes a second order thermal transition to the normal state, and is only weakly magnetized near $T_c$. At intermediate fields the thermal transition is still second order, but the magne…
Based on the newly developed real-space spin-parallel pairing and superconducting theory, we explore a simple explanation for the observed checkerboard patterns in hole-doped Ca{2-x}Na{x}CuO{2}Cl{2} cuprate superconductor. At a hole concentration x=1/8=0.125, the analytical results show that there exists a phase competition between non-superconducting 4a*4b (a=b) checkerboard phase and 8a*2c superconducting vortex phase, where a, b and c are the lattice constants of the superconductor. At a lower hole concentration x=1/16=0.0625, it is revealed that the metastable 4\sqrt{2}a*4\sqrt{2}a checker…
We use time- and angle-resolved photoemission to measure quasiparticle relaxation dynamics across a laser-induced superconducting phase transition in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. Whereas low-fluence measurements reveal picosecond dynamics, sharp femtosecond dynamics emerge at higher fluence. Analyses of data as a function of energy, momentum, and doping indicate that the closure of the near-nodal gap and disruption of macroscopic coherence are primary mechanisms driving this onset. The results demonstrate the important influence of transient electronic structure on relaxation dynamics, which is releva…
A road map to understand the relation between the onset of the superconducting state with the particular optimum heterogeneity in granular superconductors is to study a Random Tranverse Ising Model on complex networks with a scale-free degree distribution regularized by and exponential cutoff p(k) \propto k^{-γ}\exp[-k/ξ]. In this paper we characterize in detail the phase diagram of this model and its critical indices both on annealed and quenched networks. To uncover the phase diagram of the model we use the tools of heterogeneous mean-field calculations for the annealed networks and the most…
We propose a theory to explain the experimental observed deviation from the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM) scaling in rapidly quenched critical phase transition dynamics. There is a critical quench rate $τ_{Q}^{c1}$ above it the KZM scaling begins to appear. Smaller than $τ_Q^{c1}$, the defect density $n$ is a constant independent of the quench rate but depends on the final temperature $T_f$ as $n \propto L^d ε_{T_f} ^{d ν}$, the freeze out time $\hat{t}$ admits the scaling law $\hat{t} \propto ε_{T_f}^{-νz}$ where $d$ is the spatial dimension, $ε_{T_f}= (1-T_f/T_c)$ is the dimensionless reduced…
Quantum phase slippage (QPS) in a superconducting nanowire is a new candidate for developing a quantum bit. It has also been theoretically predicted that the occurrence of QPS significantly changes the current-phase relationship (CPR) of the wire due to the tunneling between topologically different metastable states. We present studies on the microwave response of the superconducting nanowires to reveal their CPRs. First, we demonstrate a simple nanowire fabrication technique, based on commercially available adhesive tapes, which allows making thin superconducting wire from different metals. W…
The magnetic response and fluxoid transitions of superconducting aluminum rings of various sizes, deposited under conditions likely to generate a layered structure, show good agreement with a two-order-parameter Ginzburg-Landau model. For intermediate couplings, we find metastable states that have different phase winding numbers around the ring in each of the two order parameters. Those states, previously theoretically predicted, are analogous to fractional vortices in singly connected samples with two-order-parameter superconductivity. Larger coupling locks the relative phase so that the two …
More recently STM experimets present firm evidence of some kind of charge modulation in underdoped cuprates. The peculiar observations of the above experiments are located in the so called pseudo-gap region of the phase diagram, just over the superconducting-dome. The model that will be used captures in a simple way the idea that the pseudo-gap phase is formed of bound fermion pairs which are close to a CDW instability but generally do not have long range order due to quenched disorder. Thus the charge degrees of freedom will be modeled by an Ising order parameter in the presence of quenched d…
We report the observation of a magnetic field assisted transient superconducting state in the two dimensional electron gas existing at the interface of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures. This metastable state depends critically on the density of charge carriers in the system. It appears concomitantly with a Lifshitz transition as a consequence of the interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity and the finite relaxation time of the in-plane magnetization. Our results clearly demonstrate the inherently metastable nature of the superconducting state competing with a magnetic order i…
The three dimensional XY model with quenched random disorder and finite screening is studied. We argue that the system scales to model with $λ\simeq 0\simeq T$ and the resulting effective model is studied numerically by defect energy scaling. In zero external field we find that there exists a true superconducting phase with a stiffness exponent $θ\simeq +1.0$ for weak disorder. For low magnetic field and weak disorder, there is also a superconducting phase with $θ\simeq +1.0$ which we conjecture is a Bragg glass. For larger disorder or applied field, there is a non superconducting phase with $…
We present studies of the atomic limit of the extended Hubbard model with pair hopping for arbitrary electron density and arbitrary chemical potential. The Hamiltonian consists of (i) the effective on-site interaction $U$ and (ii) the intersite charge exchange term $I$, determining the hopping of electron pairs between nearest-neighbour sites. In the analysis of the phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of this model we treat the intersite interactions within the mean-field approximation. In this report we focus on metastable phases and determine their ranges of occurrence. Our investiga…
We study s-wave superconductivity in the two dimensional attractive Hubbard model in an applied magnetic field, assume the extreme Pauli limit, and examine the role of spatial fluctuations in the coupling regime corresponding to BCS-BEC crossover. We use a decomposition of the interaction in terms of an auxiliary pairing field, retain the static mode, and sample the pairing field via Monte Carlo. The method requires iterative solution of the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes (BdG) equations for amplitude and phase fluctuating configurations of the pairing field. We establish the full thermal phase diagram …
