It is well known that a foliation F of a smooth manifold M gives rise to a rich cohomological theory, its characteristic (i.e., leafwise) cohomology. Characteristic cohomologies of F may be interpreted, to some extent, as functions on the space P of integral manifolds (of any dimension) of the characteristic distribution C of F. Similarly, characteristic cohomologies with local coefficients in the normal bundle TM/C of F may be interpreted as vector fields on P. In particular, they possess a (graded) Lie bracket and act on characteristic cohomology H. In this paper, I discuss how both the Lie bracket and the action on H come from a strong homotopy structure at the level of cochains. Finally, I show that such a strong homotopy structure is canonical up to isomorphisms.
We study sheaves of Lie-Rinehart algebras over locally ringed spaces. We introduce morphisms and comorphisms of such sheaves and prove factorization theorems for each kind of morphism. Using this notion of morphism, we obtain (higher) homotopy groups and groupoids for such objects which directly generalize the homotopy groups and Weinstein groupoids of Lie algebroids. We consider, the special case of sheaves of Lie-Rinehart algebras over smooth manifolds. We show that, under some reasonable assumptions, such sheaves induce a partition of the underlying manifold into leaves and that these leave…
A Chern-Weil construction for extensions of Lie-Rinehart algebras is introduced. This generalizes the classical Chern-Weil construction in differential geometry and yields characteristic classes for arbitrary extensions of Lie-Rinehart algebras. Some examples arising from spaces with singularities and from foliations are given that cannot be treated by means of the classical Chern-Weil construction.
An involutive distribution $C$ on a smooth manifold $M$ is a Lie-algebroid acting on sections of the normal bundle $TM/C$. It is known that the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex associated to this representation of $C$ possesses the structure $\mathbb{X}$ of a strong homotopy Lie-Rinehart algebra. It is natural to interpret $\mathbb{X}$ as the (derived) Lie-Rinehart algebra of vector fields on the space $\mathbb{P}$ of integral manifolds of $C$. In this paper, I show that $\mathbb{X}$ is embedded in a strong homotopy associative algebra $\mathbb{D}$ of (normal) differential operators. It is natural …
Higher homotopy generalizations of Lie-Rinehart algebras, Gerstenhaber-, and Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras are explored. These are defined in terms of various antisymmetric bilinear operations satisfying weakened versions of the Jacobi identity, as well as in terms of operations involving more than two variables of the Lie triple systems kind. A basic tool is the Maurer-Cartan algebra-the algebra of alternating forms on a vector space so that Lie brackets correspond to square zero derivations of this algebra-and multialgebra generalizations thereof. The higher homotopies are phrased in terms of …
We give a complete classification of foliations on open contact manifolds whose leaves are contact submanifolds of the ambient manifold. The results are analogues of Haefliger's classification of foliations on open manifold.
We prove that the higher harmonic signature of an even dimensional oriented Riemannian foliation of a compact Riemannian manifold with coefficients in a leafwise U(p,q)-flat complex bundle is a leafwise homotopy invariant. We also prove the leafwise homotopy invariance of the twisted higher Betti classes. Consequences for the Novikov conjecture for foliations and for groups are investigated. Replaces The Higher Harmonic Signature for Foliations I: The Untwisted Case, and contains significant improvements.
The aim here is to sketch the development of ideas related to brackets and similar concepts: Some purely group theoretical combinatorics due to Ph. Hall led to a proof of the Jacobi identity for the Whitehead product in homotopy theory. Whitehead introduced crossed modules to characterize a second relative homotopy group; guided by combinatorial group theory considerations, Reidemeister and Peiffer explored this kind of structure to develop normal forms for the decomposition of a 3-manifold; but crossed modules are also lurking behind a forgotten approach of Turing to the extension problem for…
In this article we apply ideas from homotopy theory to the study of singular foliations. We verify that a technical lemma remains valid for left semi-model categories. When applied to the category of $L_\infty$-algebroids thanks to the work of Nuiten, this lemma enables to recover results very similar to those of Laurent-Gengoux and al. about existence and (up to homotopy) uniqueness of universal $L_\infty$-algebroids associated to a singular foliation. We conclude with some open questions.
We present new open manifolds that are not homeomorphic to leaves of any C^0 codimension one foliation of a compact manifold. Among them are simply connected manifolds of dimension 5 or greater that are non-periodic in homotopy or homology, namely in their 2-dimensional homotopy or homology groups.
In this paper, we generalize the notion of Serre fibration to the Morita category of topological groupoids and derive the associated long exact sequence of homotopy groups. We use this results for calculation of homotopy groups of various groupoids, such as the foliation groupoid of a Riemannian foliation.
We associate a Lie $\infty$-algebroid to every resolution of a singular foliation, where we consider a singular foliation as a locally generated $\mathscr{O}$-submodule of vector fields on the underlying manifold closed under Lie bracket. Here $\mathscr{O}$ can be the ring of smooth, holomorphic, or real analytic functions. The choices entering the construction of this Lie $\infty$-algebroid, including the chosen underlying resolution, are unique up to homotopy and, moreover, every other Lie $\infty$-algebroid inducing the same foliation or any of its sub-foliations factorizes through it in an…
We extend the deep and important results of Lichnerowicz, Connes, and Gromov-Lawson which relate geometry and characteristic numbers to the existence and non-existence of metrics of positive scalar curvature (PSC). In particular, we show: that a spin foliation with Hausdorff homotopy groupoid of an enlargeable manifold admits no PSC metric; that any metric of PSC on such a foliation is bounded by a multiple of the reciprocal of the foliation K-area of the ambient manifold; and that Connes' vanishing theorem for characteristic numbers of PSC foliations extends to a vanishing theorem for Haeflig…
A singular (or Hermann) foliation on a smooth manifold $M$ can be seen as a subsheaf of the sheaf $\mathfrak{X}$ of vector fields on $M$. We show that if this singular foliation admits a resolution (in the sense of sheaves) consisting of sections of a graded vector bundle of finite type, then one can lift the Lie bracket of vector fields to a Lie $\infty$-algebroid structure on this resolution, that we call a universal Lie $\infty$-algebroid associated to the foliation. The name is justified because it is isomorphic (up to homotopy) to any other Lie $\infty$-algebroid structure built on any ot…
The results of this manuscript is the collection of my articles that I published during my PhD thesis. We show that there is an equivalence of categories between Lie-Rinehart algebras over a commutative algebra $\mathcal O$ and homotopy equivalence classes of negatively graded acyclic Lie $\infty$-algebroids. Therefore, this result makes sense of the universal Lie $\infty$-algebroid of every singular foliation, without any additional assumption, and for Androulidakis-Zambon singular Lie algebroids. This extends to a purely algebraic setting the construction of the universal $Q$-manifold of a l…
We show that any co-orientable foliation of dimension two on a closed orientable $3$-manifold with continuous tangent plane field can be $C^0$-approximated by both positive and negative contact structures unless all the leaves are simply connected. As applications we deduce that the existence of a taut $C^0$-foliation implies the existence of universally tight contact structures in the same homotopy class of plane fields and that a closed $3$-manifold that admits a taut $C^0$-foliation of codimension-1 is not an $L$-space in the sense of Heegaard-Floer homology.
We show in this paper that the correspondence between $2$-term representations up to homotopy and $\mathcal{VB}$-algebroids, established by Gracia-Saz and Mehta, holds also at the level of morphisms. This correspondence is hence an equivalence of categories. As an application, we study foliations and distributions on a Lie algebroid, that are compatible both with the linear structure and the Lie algebroid structure. In particular, we show how infinitesimal ideal systems in a Lie algebroid $A$ are related with subrepresentations of the adjoint representation of $A$.
The idea of Lichnerowicz or Morse-Novikov cohomology groups of a manifold has been utilized by many researchers to study important properties and invariants of a manifold. Morse-Novikov cohomology is defined using the differential $d_ω=d+ω\wedge$, where $ω$ is a closed $1$-form. We study Morse-Novikov cohomology relative to a foliation on a manifold and its homotopy invariance and then extend it to more general type of forms on a Riemannian foliation. We study the Laplacian and Hodge decompositions for the corresponding differential operators on reduced leafwise Morse-Novikov complexes. In the…
We detail the construction of a weak Poisson bracket over a submanifold of a smooth manifold M with respect to a local foliation of this submanifold. Such a bracket satisfies a weak type Jacobi identity but may be viewed as a usual Poisson bracket on the space of leaves of the foliation. We then lift this weak Poisson bracket to a weak odd Poisson bracket on the odd tangent bundle, interpreted as a weak Koszul bracket on differential forms on M. This lift is achieved by encoding the weak Poisson structure into a homotopy Poisson structure on an extended manifold, and lifting the Hamiltonian fu…
We describe various equivalent ways of associating to an orbifold, or more generally a higher étale differentiable stack, a weak homotopy type. Some of these ways extend to arbitrary higher stacks on the site of smooth manifolds, and we show that for a differentiable stack X arising from a Lie groupoid G, the weak homotopy type of X agrees with that of BG. Using this machinery, we are able to find new presentations for the weak homotopy type of certain classifying spaces. In particular, we give a new presentation for the Borel construction of an almost free action of a Lie group G on a smooth …
We generalize the van Est map and isomorphism theorem in three ways, and we discuss conjectured connections with homotopy theory, including a proposal of a category which unifies differentiable stacks, Lie algebroids and homotopy theory. In Part 2 of this thesis we generalize the van Est map from a comparison map between Lie groupoid cohomology and Lie algebroid cohomology to a (more conceptual) comparison map between the cohomology of a stack $\mathcal{G}$ and the cohomology of a simple foliation $\mathcal{H}\to\mathcal{G}$. In Part 1 we generalize the functions that we can take cohomology of…
