We study the growth dynamics of ordered structures of strongly interacting polar molecules in optical lattices. Using dipole blockade of microwave excitations, we map the system onto an interacting spin-1/2 model possessing ground states with crystalline order, and describe a way to prepare these states by non-adiabatically driving the transitions between molecular rotational levels. The proposed technique bypasses the need to cross a phase transition and allows for the creation of ordered domains of considerably larger size compared to approaches relying on adiabatic preparation.
Spatial adiabatic passage processes for ultracold atoms trapped in tunnel-coupled cylindrically symmetric concentric potentials are investigated. Specifically, we discuss the matter-wave analogue of the rapid adiabatic passage (RAP) technique for a high fidelity and robust loading of a single atom into a harmonic ring potential from a harmonic trap, and for its transport between two concentric rings. We also consider a system of three concentric rings and investigate the transport of a single atom between the innermost and the outermost rings making use of the matter-wave analogue of the stimu…
We analyze a technique for the preparation of low entropy many body states of atoms in optical lattices based on adiabatic passage. In particular, we show that this method allows preparation of strongly correlated states as stable highest energy states of Hamiltonians that have trivial ground states. As an example, we analyze the generation of antiferromagnetically ordered states by adiabatic change of a staggered field acting on the spins of bosonic atoms with ferromagnetic interactions.
We present a joint experimental and theoretical analysis to assess the adiabatic experimental preparation of ultracold bosons in optical lattices aimed at simulating the three-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. Thermometry of lattice gases is realized from the superfluid to the Mott regime by combining the measurement of three-dimensional momentum-space densities with ab-initio quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations of the same quantity. The measured temperatures across the superfluid-to-Mott transition are in agreement with isentropic lines reconstructed via QMC for the experimental parameters o…
We introduce a model to study the collisions of two ultracold diatomic molecules in one dimension interacting via pairwise potentials. We present results for this system, and argue that it offers lessons for real molecular collisions in three dimensions. We analyze the distribution of the adiabatic potentials in the hyperspherical coordinate representation as well as the distribution of the four-body bound states in the adiabatic approximation (i.e. no coupling between adiabatic channels). It is found that while the adiabatic potential distribution transitions from chaotic to non-chaotic as th…
We study, experimentally and theoretically, the controlled transfer of harmonically trapped ultracold gases between different quantum states. In particular we experimentally demonstrate a fast decompression and displacement of both a non-interacting gas and an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate which are initially at equilibrium. The decompression parameters are engineered such that the final state is identical to that obtained after a perfectly adiabatic transformation despite the fact that the fast decompression is performed in the strongly non-adiabatic regime. During the transfer the ato…
We demonstrate a novel class of trapping potentials, time-averaged adiabatic potentials (TAAP) which allows the generation of a large variety of traps and waveguides for ultracold atoms. Multiple traps can be coupled through controllable tunneling barriers or merged altogether. We present analytical expressions for pancake-, cigar-, and ring- shaped traps. The ring-geometry is of particular interest for guided matter-wave interferometry as it provides a perfectly smooth waveguide of controllable diameter, and thus a tunable sensitivity of the interferometer.
We develop the theory for the Adiabatic Raman Photoassociation (ARPA) of ultracold atoms to form ultracold molecules in the presence of scattering resonances. Based on a computational method in which we replace the continuum with a discrete set of "effective modes", we show that the existence of resonances greatly aids in the formation of deeply bound molecular states. We illustrate our general theory by computationally studying the formation of $^{85}$Rb$_2$ molecules from pairs of colliding ultracold $^{85}$Rb atoms. The single-event transfer yield is shown to have a near-unity value for wid…
We examine the adiabatic preparation of crystalline phases of Rydberg excitations in a one-dimensional lattice gas by frequency sweep of the excitation laser, as proposed by Pohl et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 043002 (2010)] and recently realized experimentally by Schauß et al. [Science 347, 1455 (2015)]. We find that the preparation of crystals of a few Rydberg excitations in a unitary system of several tens of atoms requires exceedingly long times for the adiabatic following of the ground state of the system Hamiltonian. Using quantum stochastic (Monte-Carlo) wavefunction simulations, we show…
We develop a dissipative quantum state preparation scheme for the creation of phase- and number-squeezed states. It utilizes ultracold atoms in a double-well configuration immersed in a background Bose-Einstein condensate, with the latter consisting of an atom species different from the atoms in the double well and acting as a dissipative quantum reservoir. We derive a master equation for this system starting from microscopic physics, and show that squeezing develops on a time scale proportional to $1/N$, where $N$ is the number of particles in the double well. This scaling, caused by bosonic …
We analyze the possibility to prepare a Heisenberg antiferromagnet with cold fermions in optical lattices, starting from a band insulator and adiabatically changing the lattice potential. The numerical simulation of the dynamics in 1D allows us to identify the conditions for success, and to study the influence that the presence of holes in the initial state may have on the protocol. We also extend our results to two-dimensional systems.
Quantum many-body phases offer unique properties and emergent phenomena, making them an active area of research. A promising approach for their experimental realization in model systems is to adiabatically follow the ground state of a quantum Hamiltonian from a product state of isolated particles to one that is strongly-correlated. Such protocols are relevant also more broadly in coherent quantum annealing and adiabatic quantum computing. Here we explore one such protocol in a system of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. A fully magnetized state is connected to a correlated zero-magnetizat…
We analyze a scheme for preparation of magnetically ordered states of two-component bosonic atoms in optical lattices. We compute the dynamics during adiabatic and optimized time-dependent ramps to produce ground states of effective spin Hamiltonians, and determine the robustness to decoherence for realistic experimental system sizes and timescales. Ramping parameters near a phase transition point in both effective spin-1/2 and spin-1 models produces entangled spin-symmetric states that have potential future applications in quantum enhanced measurement. The preparation of these states and thei…
We propose a protocol for realizing the stripe phase in two spin models on a two-dimensional square lattice, which can be implemented with strongly magnetic atoms (Cr, Dy, Er, etc.) in optical lattices by encoding spin states into Zeeman sublevels of the ground state manifold. The protocol is tested with cluster-mean-field time-dependent variational ansätze, validated by comparison with exact results for small systems, which enable us to simulate the dynamics of systems with up to 64 sites during the state-preparation protocol. This allows, in particular, to estimate the time required for prep…
Motivated by recent progress in the experimental manipulation of cold atoms in optical lattices, we study three different protocols for non-adiabatic quantum state preparation and state transport in chains of Rydberg atoms. The protocols we discuss are based on the blockade mechanism between atoms which, when excited to a Rydberg state, interact through a van der Waals potential, and rely on single-site addressing. Specifically, we discuss protocols for efficient creation of an antiferromagnetic GHZ state, a class of matrix product states including a so-called Rydberg crystal and for the state…
We report the experimental realisation of a versatile ring trap for ultracold atoms. The ring geometry is created by the time-averaged adiabatic potential resulting from the application of an oscillating magnetic bias field to a rf dressed quadrupole trap. Lifetimes for a Bose-Einstein condensate in the ring exceed 11s and the ring radius was continuously varied from 50$μ$m to 261$μ$m. An efficient method of loading the ring from a conventional TOP trap is presented together with a rotation scheme which introduces angular momentum into the system. The ring presents an opportunity to study the …
We report the first experimental realization of ultracold atoms confined in a time-averaged, adiabatic potential (TAAP). This novel trapping technique involves using a slowly oscillating ($\sim$ kHz) bias field to time-average the instantaneous potential given by dressing a bare magnetic potential with a high frequency ($\sim$ MHz) magnetic field. The resultant potentials provide a convenient route to a variety of trapping geometries with tunable parameters. We demonstrate the TAAP trap in a standard time-averaged orbiting potential trap with additional Helmholtz coils for the introduction of …
Interesting spin Hamiltonians can be realized with ultracold atoms in a two-component Mott insulator (2CMI). It was recently demonstrated that the application of a magnetic field gradient to the 2CMI enables new techniques of thermometry and adiabatic cooling. Here we present a theoretical description which provides quantitative analysis of these two new techniques. We show that adiabatic reduction of the field gradient is capable of cooling below the Curie or Néel temperature of certain spin ordered phases.
We theoretically study the adiabatic preparation of an antiferromagnetic phase in a mixed Mott insulator of two bosonic atom species in a one-dimensional optical lattice. In such a system one can engineer a tunable parabolic inhomogeneity by controlling the difference of the trapping potentials felt by the two species. Using numerical simulations we predict that a finite parabolic potential can assist the adiabatic preparation of the antiferromagnet. The optimal strength of the parabolic inhomogeneity depends sensitively on the number imbalance between the two species. We also find that during…

We examine the adiabatic preparation of spatially-ordered Rydberg excitations of atoms in finite one-dimensional lattices by frequency-chirped laser pulses, as realized in a number of recent experiments simulating quantum Ising model. Our aims are to unravel the microscopic mechanism of the phase transition from the unexcited state of atoms to the antiferromagnetic-like state of Rydberg excitations by traversing an extended gapless phase, and to estimate the preparation fidelity of the target state in a moderately sized system amenable to detailed numerical analysis. We find that, in the basis…
We discuss how an $η$-condensate, corresponding to an exact excited eigenstate of the Fermi-Hubbard model, can be produced with cold atoms in an optical lattice. Using time-dependent density matrix renormalisation group methods, we analyse a state preparation scheme beginning from a band insulator state in an optical superlattice. This state can act as an important test case, both for adiabatic preparation methods and the implementation of the many-body Hamiltonian, and measurements on the final state can be used to help detect associated errors.
We present the first experimental demonstration of a multiple-radiofrequency dressed potential for the configurable magnetic confinement of ultracold atoms. We load cold $^{87}$Rb atoms into a double well potential with an adjustable barrier height, formed by three radiofrequencies applied to atoms in a static quadrupole magnetic field. Our multiple-radiofrequency approach gives precise control over the double well characteristics, including the depth of individual wells and the height of the barrier, and enables reliable transfer of atoms between the available trapping geometries. We have cha…
In this work we model and realize stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) in the diatomic $\mathrm{^{23}Na^{40}K}$ molecule from weakly bound Feshbach molecules to the rovibronic ground state via the $\left|v_d=5,J=Ω=1\right\rangle$ excited state in the $d^3Π$ electronic potential. We demonstrate how to set up a quantitative model for polar molecule production by taking into account the rich internal structure of the molecules and the coupling laser phase noise. We find excellent agreement between the model predictions and the experiment, demonstrating the applicability of the model in the…
In order to study ultracold charge-transfer processes in hybrid atom-ion traps, we have mapped out the potential energy curves and molecular parameters for several low lying states of the Rb, Yb$^+$ system. We employ both a multi-reference configuration interaction (MRCI) and a full configuration interaction (FCI) approach. Turning points, crossing points, potential minima and spectroscopic molecular constants are obtained for the lowest five molecular states. Long-range parameters, including the dispersion coefficients are estimated from our {\it ab initio} data. The separated-atom ionization…
By engineering appropriate artificial gauge potentials, a Bose-Einstein condensate can be adiabatically loaded into a current carrying state that resembles a vortex lattice of a rotating uniform Bose gas. We give two explicit, experimentally feasible protocols by which vortex lattices can be smoothly formed from a condensate initially at rest. In the first example we show how this can be achieved by adiabatically loading a uniform BEC into an optical flux lattice, formed from coherent optical coupling of internal states of the atom. In the second example we study a tight binding model that is …
We describe the dynamical preparation of anisotropic crystalline phases obtained by laser-exciting ultracold Alkali atoms to Rydberg p-states where they interact via anisotropic van der Waals interactions. We develop a time- dependent variational mean field ansatz to model large, but finite two-dimensional systems in experimentally accessible parameter regimes, and we present numerical simulations to illustrate the dynamical formation of anisotropic Rydberg crystals.
Heteronuclear alkali-metal dimers represent the class of molecules of choice for creating samples of ultracold molecules exhibiting an intrinsic large permanent electric dipole moment. Among them, the KCs molecule, with a permanent dipole moment of 1.92~Debye still remains to be observed in ultracold conditions. Based on spectroscopic studies available in the literature completed by accurate quantum chemistry calculations, we propose several optical coherent schemes to create ultracold bosonic and fermionic KCs molecules in their absolute rovibrational ground level, starting from a weakly boun…
We argue that a Bose-Einstein condensate can be transformed into a Floquet condensate, that is, into a periodically time-dependent many-particle state possessing the coherence properties of a mesoscopically occupied single-particle Floquet state. Our reasoning is based on the observation that the denseness of the many-body system's quasienergy spectrum does not necessarily obstruct effectively adiabatic transport. Employing the idealized model of a driven bosonic Josephson junction, we demonstrate that only a small amount of Floquet entropy is generated when a driving force with judiciously ch…
Alkaline-earth(-like) ultracold atoms, trapped in optical lattices and in the presence of an external gauge field, can stabilise Mott insulating phases characterised by density and magnetic order. We show that this property can be used to realise a topological fractional pump. Our analysis is based on a many-body adiabatic expansion and on time-dependent matrix-product-states numerical simulations. We characterise the pumping protocol by including both finite-size and non-adiabatic corrections. For a specific form of atom-atom interaction, we present an exactly-solvable model of a fractional p…
The preparation of a quantum degenerate gas of heteronuclear molecules has been an outstanding challenge. We use path integral Quantum Monte Carlo simulations to understand the role of interactions and finite temperature effects in the protocol currently employed to adiabatically prepare a low-entropy gas of polar molecules in a lattice starting from an ultracold Bose-Fermi mixture. We find that interspecies interactions affect the final temperature of the mixture after the adiabatic loading procedure and detrimentally limit the molecular peak filling. Our conclusions are in agreement with rec…
We investigate the fate of hardcore bosons in a Harper-Hofstadter model which was experimentally realized by Aidelsburger et al. [Nature Physics 11 , 162 (2015)] at half filling of the lowest band. We discuss the stability of an emergent fractional Chern insulator (FCI) state in a finite region of the phase diagram that is separated from a superfluid state by a first-order transition when tuning the band topology following the protocol used in the experiment. Since crossing a first-order transition is unfavorable for adiabatically preparing the FCI state, we extend the model to stabilize a fea…
A forthcoming challenge in ultracold lattice gases is the simulation of quantum magnetism. That involves both the preparation of the lattice atomic gas in the desired spin state and the probing of the state. Here we demonstrate how a probing scheme based on atom-light interfaces gives access to the order parameters of nontrivial quantum magnetic phases, allowing us to characterize univocally strongly correlated magnetic systems produced in ultracold gases. This method, which is also nondemolishing, yields spatially resolved spin correlations and can be applied to bosons or fermions. As a proof…
We report the creation of ultracold bosonic dipolar $^{23}\textrm{Na}^{39}\textrm{K}$ molecules in their absolute rovibrational ground state. Starting from weakly bound molecules immersed in an ultracold atomic mixture, we coherently transfer the dimers to the rovibrational ground state using an adiabatic Raman passage. We analyze the two-body decay in a pure molecular sample and in molecule-atom mixtures and find an unexpectedly low two-body decay coefficient for collisions between molecules and $^{39}\textrm{K}$ atoms in a selected hyperfine state. The preparation of bosonic $^{23}\textrm{Na…
Recent years have seen strong progress in quantum simulation of gauge-theory dynamics using ultracold-atom experiments. A principal challenge in these efforts is the certification of gauge invariance, which has recently been realized in [B.~Yang et al., arXiv:2003.08945]. One major but poorly investigated experimental source of gauge-invariance violation is an imperfect preparation of the initial state. Using the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group, we analyze the robustness of gauge-invariant dynamics against potential preparation defects in the above ultracold-atom implementa…
An energy gap develops near quantum critical point of quantum phase transition in a finite many-body (MB) system, facilitating the ground state transformation by adiabatic parameter change. In real application scenarios, however, the efficacy for such a protocol is compromised by the need to balance finite system life time with adiabaticity, as exemplified in a recent experiment that prepares three-mode balanced Dicke state near deterministically [PNAS {\bf 115}, 6381 (2018)]. Instead of tracking the instantaneous ground state as unanimously required for most adiabatic crossing, this work repo…
We propose a scheme to realize lattice potentials of sub-wavelength spacing for ultracold atoms. It is based on spin-dependent optical lattices with a time-periodic modulation. We show that the atomic motion is well described by the combined action of an effective, time-independent, lattice of small spacing, together with a micro-motion associated with the time-modulation. A numerical simulation shows that an atomic gas can be adiabatically loaded into the effective lattice ground state, for timescales comparable to the ones required for adiabatic loading of standard optical lattices. We gener…
We report on two-photon photoassociation (PA) spectroscopy of ultracold heteronuclear LiRb molecules. This is used to determine the binding energies of the loosely bound levels of the electronic ground singlet and the lowest triplet states of LiRb. We observe strong two-photon PA lines with power broadened line widths greater than 20 GHz at relatively low laser intensity of 30 W/cm$^{2}$. The implication of this observation on direct atom to molecule conversion using stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is discussed and the prospect for electronic ground state molecule production is the…
Fractional quantum Hall systems are among the most exciting strongly correlated systems. Accessing them microscopically via quantum simulations with ultracold atoms would be an important achievement toward a better understanding of this strongly correlated state of matter. A promising approach is to confine a small number of bosonic atoms in a quasi-two-dimensional rotating trap, which mimics the magnetic field. For rotation frequencies close to the in-plane trapping frequency, the ground state is predicted to be a bosonic analog of the Laughlin state. Here, we study the problem of the adiabat…
Periodic driving has emerged as a powerful experimental tool to engineer physical properties of isolated, synthetic quantum systems. However, due to the lack of energy conservation and heating effects, non-trivial (e.g., topological) many-body states in periodically driven (Floquet) systems are generally metastable. Therefore it is necessary to find strategies for preparing long-lived many-body states in Floquet systems. We develop a theoretical framework for describing the dynamical preparation of states in Floquet systems by a slow turn-on of the drive. We find that the dynamics of the syste…
Nonequilibrium dynamics of an N-fold spin-degenerate ultracold Fermi gas is described in terms of beyond-mean-field Kadanoff-Baym equations for correlation functions. Using a nonperturbative expansion in powers of 1/N, the equations are derived from the two-particle irreducible effective action in Schwinger-Keldysh formulation. The definition of the nonperturbative approximation on the level of the effective action ensures vital conservation laws as, e.g., for the total energy and particle number. As an example, the long-time evolution of a homogeneous, twofold spin-degenerate Fermi gas is stu…
