We report on a reflective wave-plate system utilizing phase-shifting mirrors (PSM) for a continuous variation of elliptical polarization without changing the beam position and direction. The scalability of multilayer optics to large apertures and the suitability for high-intensity broad-bandwidth laser beams make reflective wave-plates an ideal tool for experiments on relativistic laser-plasma interaction. Our measurements confirm the preservation of the pulse duration and spectrum when a 30-fs Ti:Sapphire laser beam passes the system.
The array of micro-prisms was described by model of multi-period blazed gratings consisting of triangular apertures. The origins of hexagram-shaped diffraction patterns were interpreted based on multiple-beam interference and diffraction array theorem. The relation between zonal /line ghost fringes and imperfectly fabricated array structures was analyzed. Geometrical performances (e.g., the dihedral angle of micro-prism) were tested by measuring the features of diffraction patterns of samples from three retro-reflective sheeting manufacturers.
We report on the experimental realization of flat mirrors enabling the broadband generation of optical vortices upon reflection. The effect is based on the geometric Berry phase associated with the circular Bragg reflection phenomenon from chiral uniaxial media. We show the reflective optical vortex generation from both diffractive and nondiffractive paraxial light beams using spatially patterned chiral liquid crystal films. The intrinsic spectrally broadband character of spin-orbit generation of optical phase singularities is demonstrated over the full visible domain. Our results do not rely …
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can measure the phase with antenna and microwave, which cannot be directly extended to visible light imaging due to phase lost. In this letter, we reported an active remote sensing with visible light via reflective Fourier ptychography (FP), termed coherent synthetic aperture imaging (CSAI), achieving high resolution, wide field-of-view (FOV) and phase recovery. A proof-of-concept experiment was reported with laser scanning and a collimator for the infinite object. Both smooth and rough objects are tested, and the spatial resolution increased from 15.6 um to 3.48…
We explore the potential of 3D metal printing to realize complex conductive terahertz devices. Factors impacting performance such as printing resolution, surface roughness, oxidation, and material loss are investigated via analytical, numerical, and experimental approaches. The high degree of control offered by a 3D-printed topology is exploited to realize a zone plate operating at 530 GHz. Reflection efficiency at this frequency is found to be over 90%. The high-performance of this preliminary device suggest that 3D metal printing can play a strong role in guided-wave and general beam control…
Reducing the aperture size is a conventional technique to obtain enhanced image resolution in optics but it is obscured by depleting illumination. Polarization coded apertures (PCAs) can be employed to circumvent this critical artifact. We experimentally demonstrate intensity compensated polarization encrypted apertures, which are designed using the polarization modulation characteristics of LC-SLM. PCAs are not limited by the aperture size and hence far-field point spread function (PSF) can be more conveniently recorded using these PCAs. We experimentally validate that Depth of field (DOF) of…
In the present paper, a half-wave plate (HWP) based on a birefringent metamaterial is numerically designed to operate in the visible range. The proposed structure consists of an array of double-pattern perpendicular rectangular aperture (RAA) engraved into opaque silver film deposited on a glass substrate. One of the apertures is glass filled. The operating principle of this plate is based on the excitation and the propagation of one guided mode inside each aperture but with different effective index. At the output side, a phase difference is obtained whose value mainly depends on the metal th…
For ultrashort pulses having different states of polarization, the experienced time delay when passing through small apertures is different. In the case of a small slit (or a circular aperture), we report a significantly stronger dispersion for the TE (or azimuthal) mode as compared to that for the TM (or radial) mode, creating a noticeable time delay between the two orthogonal polarization states, even for very thin apertures. The birefringent effect of small apertures is caused by waveguide mode dispersion. In essence, the propagation constant of the excited modes varies with wavelength diff…
Linear birefringence, as implemented in wave plates, is a natural way to control the state of polarization of light. We report on a general method for designing miniature planar wave plates using surface plasmons. The resonant optical device considered here is a single circular aperture surrounded by an elliptical antenna grating. The difference in short and long axis of each ellipses introduces a phase shift on the surface plasmons which enables the realization of a quarter wave plate. Furthermore, the experimental results and the theoretical analysis show that the general procedure used does…
Optical limiters are nonlinear devices that feature decreasing transmittance with increasing incident optical intensity, and thus can protect sensitive components from high-intensity illumination. The ideal optical limiter reflects rather than absorbs light in its active ("limiting") state, minimizing risk of damage to the limiter itself. Previous efforts to realize reflective limiters were based on embedding nonlinear layers into relatively thick multilayer photonic structures, resulting in substantial fabrication complexity, reduced speed and, in some instances, limited working bandwidth. We…
In this work, we study the heat dissipated at metal surfaces by the electromagnetic field scattered by isolated subwavelength apertures in metal screens. In contrast to our common belief that the intensity of waves created by local sources should decrease with the distance from the sources, we reveal that the dissipated heat at the surface remains constant over a broad spatial interval of a few tens of wavelengths. This behavior which occurs for noble metals at near infrared wavelengths is observed with nonintrusive thermoreflectance measurements and is analyzed with an analytical model which …

Direct imaging of exoplanets or circumstellar disk material requires extreme contrast at the 10-6 to 10-12 levels at < 100 mas angular separation from the star. Focal-plane mask (FPM) coronagraphic imaging has played a key role in this field, taking advantage of progress in Adaptive Optics on ground-based 8+m class telescopes. However, large telescope entrance pupils usually consist of complex, sometimes segmented, non-ideal apertures, which include a central obstruction for the secondary mirror and its support structure. In practice, this negatively impacts wavefront quality and coronagraphic…
Generalized beams of light that are made to turn inside out, creating black nodal areas of total destructive interference are described. As an example we experimentally created an elliptical node from a uniformly illuminated elliptical aperture by use of a lossless phase mask called a q-plate. We demonstrate how a modified phase retrieval algorithm may be used to design phase masks that achieve this transformation for an arbitrary aperture shape when analytical methods are not available. This generic wave phenomenon may find uses in both optical and non-optical systems.
The use of femtosecond lasers to introduce controlled stress states has recently been demonstrated in silica glass. We use this technique, in combination with chemical etching, to generate and control stress-induced birefringence over a well-defined region of interest, demonstrating direct-write wave plates with precisely tailored retardance levels. This tailoring enables the fabrication of laser-written polarization optics that can be tuned to any wavelength for which silica is transparent and with a clear aperture free of any laser modifications. Using this approach, we achieve sufficient re…
For a complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs) etched on one screen of two infinite and perfectly conducting plates under cylindrical plane wave illumination, the transmission coefficients analysis were performed through finite-difference time-domain simulations. For the single slot ring CSRR, two transmission dips are observed for the direction parallel to aperture at resonance whereas two enhanced transmission for the direction normal to the aperture. For double slot ring CSRR, the transmission coefficients appear more anisotropic. The results provided considerable insight into the electr…
In this paper, we present the design procedure of modulated metasurface leaky-wave antennas (MMLWAs) to generate coaxial superposition of vortex beams with several orbital angular momentum (OAM) states. Based on the Flat Optics (FO) technique and aperture field estimation (AFE) method, an analytical framework is proposed to facilitate the implementation of MMLWAs generating multiple topological charges in the OAM regimen. Furthermore, using the spectral analysis which has been derived from the proposed model, we have shown that the symmetry of aperture shape can affect the purity of the mode. …
Harnessing the Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) of light is an appealing approach to developing photonic technologies for future applications in optical communications and high- dimensional Quantum Key Distributions (QKD). An outstanding challenge to the widespread uptake of the OAM resource is its efficient generation. We design a new device which can directly emit an OAM-carrying light beam. By fabricating micro-scale Spiral Phase Plates (SPPs) within the aperture of a Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSELs), the linearly polarized Gaussian beam emitted by the VCSEL is converted into a…
One of the most serious bottleneck on achieving kilojoule-level high-energy petawatt (PW) to hundreds-petawatt (100PW) lasers with ps to fs pulse duration is the requirement of as large as meter-sized gratings in the compressor so as to avoid the laser-induced damage to the gratings. However, this kind of meter-sized grating with high quality is hard to manufacture so far. Here, we propose a new in-house beam-splitting compressor based on the property that the damage threshold of gratings depend on the pulse duration. The new scheme will simultaneously improve the stability, save expensive gra…
A cryogenic achromatic half-wave plate (HWP) for submillimetre astronomical polarimetry has been designed, manufactured, tested, and deployed in the Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Submillimeter Telescope for Polarimetry (BLASTPol). The design is based on the five-slab Pancharatnam recipe and it works in the wavelength range 200-600 micron, making it the broadest-band HWP built to date at (sub)millimetre wavelengths. The frequency behaviour of the HWP has been fully characterised at room and cryogenic temperatures with incoherent radiation from a polarising Fourier transform spectrometer. We deve…
Conoscopic interferometry is a promising detection technique for ultrafast acoustics. By focusing a probe beam through a birefringent crystal before passing it through a polarizer, conoscopic interferences sculpt the spatial profile of the beam. The use of these patterns for acoustic wave detection revealed a higher detection sensitivity over existing techniques, such as reflectometry and beam distortion detection. However, the physical origin of the increased sensitivity is unknown. In this work, we present a model, describing the sensitivity behaviour of conoscopic interferometry with respec…
