Quasars provide our farthest-reaching view of the Universe. The Sloan Survey now contains over 100,000 quasar candidates. A careful look at the angular distribution of quasar magnitudes shows a surprising intensity enhancement with a "bulls eye" pattern toward (alpha, delta) ~ (195°, 0°) for all wavelengths from UV through infrared. The angular pattern and size of the enhancement is very similar for all wavelengths, which is inconsistent with a Doppler shift due to a large peculiar velocity toward that direction. The shift is also too large to explain as a systematic error in the quasar magnitudes. The general features of the anomaly can be explained by the gravitational lensing of a massive bubble with Mlens ~ 10^21 M\odot, a lens radius ~350 Mpc, and with the lens subtending an angle of \pm15° on the sky. It is remarkable that the presence of such a massive bubble universe can explain not only the anomalies in the angular distribution of quasar intensities, but also anomalies in the distribution of luminous red galaxies, anomalies in the CMB, and bulk flow discrepancies, all of which appear in roughly the same direction.
This is a very informal report that gives further details on the evidence for a bubble universe based on an anomaly in the angular distribution of quasar magnitudes that was presented in a short paper in arXiv:1202.4433. This report addresses some concerns of two reviewers. It is meant to be read in conjunction with 1202.4433. There is very little overlap between the two articles. This extended discussion is, by necessity, somewhat more technical in nature. I am grateful for the reviewers' comments that forced me to understand these issues more thoroughly.
The infrared detection of a z>7 quasar has opened up a new window to directly probe the IGM during the epoch of reionization. In this paper we theoretically consider the possibility of detecting the ionized bubble around a z=8 quasar using targeted redshifted 21-cm observations with the GMRT. The apparent shape and size of the ionized bubble, as seen by a distant observer, depends on the parameters \dot{N}_{phs}/C, x_HI/C and τ_Q where \dot{N}_{phs}, τ_Q, x_HI and C are respectively the photon emission rate, age of the quasar, the neutral fraction and clumping factor of the IGM.Here we have an…
We discuss the secondary cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy due to kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect from ionized bubbles around individual quasars prior to the reionization of the Universe. The bubbles create local ionization modulations which move with the large scale structure linear bulk flow and act as sources for kSZ. We improve upon previous calculations of this effect, using a halo model based description of quasar abundance, and find that the kSZ distortion power spectrum, $C_\ell$, from the bubbles to be sub-dominant to kSZ from patchy reionization driven by galaxies.…
We use radiative transfer to study the growth of ionized regions around the brightest, z=8 quasars in a large cosmological hydrodynamic simulation that includes black hole growth and feedback (the MassiveBlack simulation). We find that in the presence of the quasar s the comoving HII bubble radii reach 10 Mpc/h after 20 My while with the stellar component alone the HII bubbles are smaller by at least an order of magnitude. Our calculations show that several features are not captured within an analytical growth model of Stromgren spheres. The X-ray photons from hard quasar spectra drive a smoot…
We present multi-frequency (1-8 GHz) VLA data, combined with VIMOS IFU data and HST imaging, of a z=0.085 radio-quiet type 2 quasar (with L(1.4GHz)~5e23 W/Hz and L(AGN)~2e45 erg/s). Due to the morphology of its emission-line region, the target (J1430+1339) has been referred to as the Teacup AGN in the literature. We identify "bubbles" of radio emission that are extended ~10-12 kpc to both the east and west of the nucleus. The edge of the brighter eastern bubble is co-spatial with an arc of luminous ionized gas. We also show that the Teacup AGN hosts a compact radio structure, located ~0.8 kpc …
The nature and energetics of feedback from thermal winds in quasars can be constrained via observations of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect (SZE) induced by the bubble of thermal plasma blown into the intergalactic medium by the quasar wind. In this letter, we present evidence that we have made the first detection of such a bubble, associated with the hyperluminous quasar HE0515-4414. The SZE detection is corroborated by the presence of extended emission line gas at the same position angle as the wind. Our detection appears on only one side of the quasar, consistent with the SZE signal arising fro…
Using long-slit optical spectroscopy obtained at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias, we have examined the gaseous environment of the radio-loud quasar TXS 1436+157 (z=2.54), previously known to be associated with a large Ly-alpha nebula and a spatially extended Ly-alpha-absorbing structure. From the Ly-alpha nebula we measure kinematic properties consistent with infall at a rate of about 10-100 M./yr - more than sufficient to power a quasar at the top of the luminosity function. The absorbing structure lies outside of the Ly-alpha nebula, at a radius of >40 kpc from the quasar. Against the br…
The latest result in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Lens Search (SQLS) has set the first cosmological constraints on negative-mass compact objects and Ellis wormholes. There are no multiple images lensed by the above two exotic objects for $\sim 50000$ distant quasars in the SQLS data. Therefore, an upper bound is put on the cosmic abundances of these lenses. The number density of negative mass compact objects is $n<10^{-8} (10^{-4}) h^3 {\rm Mpc}^{-3}$ at the mass scale $|M| > 10^{15} (10^{12}) M_\odot$, which corresponds to the cosmological density parameter $|Ω| < 10^{-4}$ at the galax…
We examine recent high-precision measurements of small-scale quasar clustering (at $z\sim0.5-2$ on scales of $\sim25~\mathrm{kpc/h}$) from the SDSS in the context of the MassiveBlackII (MBII) cosmological hydrodynamic simulation and conditional luminosity function (CLF) modeling. At these high luminosities ($g < 20.85$ quasars), the MBII simulation volume ($100~\mathrm{cMpc}/h$ comoving boxsize) has only 3 quasar pairs at distances of $1-4$ Mpc. The black-hole masses for the pairs range between $M_{bh}\sim1-3\times 10^{9}~M_{\odot}/h$ and the quasar hosts are haloes of $M_h\sim1-3\times10^{14}…
The most distant known quasar recently discovered by Bañados et al. (2018) is at $z=7.5$ (690 Myr after the Big Bang), at the dawn of galaxy formation. We explore the host galaxy of the brightest quasar in the large volume cosmological hydrodynamic simulation BlueTides, which in Phase II has reached these redshifts. The brightest quasar in BlueTides has a luminosity of a $\sim$ few $10^{13} L_{\odot}$ and a black hole mass of $6.4 \times 10^{8} M_{\odot}$ at $z \sim 7.5$, comparable to the observed quasar (the only one in this large volume). The quasar resides in a rare halo of mass $M_{H} \si…
Observed magnitudes of many quasars with redshifts exceeding $z=5$ correspond to luminosities $L_{\rm bol} > 10^{14}\,L_\odot$. The standard mechanism of quasar energy release by accretion suggests that masses of superluminous quasars should exceed $10^{10}\,M_\odot$. On the other hand, the age of these objects in the standard cosmological model is below one billion years, which is too short to explain their formation in the early Universe. Many quasars are known to be gravitationally lensed; showing multiple images of the same object. In the case of remote quasars with no multiple images, it …
Supermassive blackholes with masses of a billion solar masses or more are known to exist up to $z=7$. However, the present-day environments of the descendants of first quasars is not well understood and it is not known if they live in massive galaxy clusters or more isolated galaxies at $z=0$. We use a dark matter-only realization (BTMassTracer) of the BlueTides cosmological hydrodynamic simulation to study the halo properties of the descendants of the most massive black holes at $z=8$. We find that the descendants of the quasars with most massive black holes are not amongst the most massive h…
The idea that dark matter can be made of intermediate-mass primordial black holes in the $10M_\odot \lesssim M \lesssim 200M_\odot$ range has recently been reconsidered, particularly in the light of the detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO experiment. The existence of even a small fraction of dark matter in black holes should nevertheless result in noticeable quasar gravitational microlensing. Quasar microlensing is sensitive to any type of compact objects in the lens galaxy, to their abundance, and to their mass. We have analyzed optical and X-ray microlensing data from 24 gravitation…
Quasar feedback models often predict an expanding hot gas bubble which drives a galaxy-scale outflow. In many circumstances this hot gas radiates inefficiently and is therefore difficult to observe directly. We present an indirect method to detect the presence of a hot bubble using hydrostatic photoionization calculations of the cold (~10^4 K) line-emitting gas. We compare our calculations with observations of the broad line region, the inner face of the torus, the narrow line region (NLR), and the extended NLR, and thus constrain the hot gas pressure at distances 0.1 pc -- 10 kpc from the cen…
We present the results of an exploratory study of broad line region (BLR) metallicity in 34 2.2 < z < 4.6 quasars with far-infrared (FIR) luminosities (L_FIR) from 10^13.4 to 10^12.1 L_\odot . Quasar samples sorted by L_FIR might represent an evolutionary sequence if the star formation rates (SFRs) in quasar hosts generally diminish across quasar lifetimes. We use rest-frame ultraviolet spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to construct three composite spectra sorted by L_FIR, corresponding to average SFRs of 4980, 2130 and 340 M_\odot yr^-1 after correcting for a nominal quasar FIR contri…
Recent Chandra X-ray observations of many galaxy clusters find evidence for hot metal-rich outflows preferentially aligned with the large-scale axes of X-ray cavities with typical outflow masses of around $10^{9} $ - $10^{10} M_{\odot}$. Here we perform a suite of three hydrodynamic simulations to investigate whether AGN jets could drive these metal-rich outflows in a representative cluster. By using both the tracer variable and virtual particle methods, and additionally following the gas metallicity evolution, we show that metal-rich gas initially located in central regions can indeed be upli…
Many theoretical models predict that quasar driven outflows account for the observed quenching of star formation in massive galaxies. There is growing observational evidence for quasar-launched massive outflows at z>6, while the details of outflow-host galaxy interaction remain obscure. In this paper, we study the feedback around the highest redshift quasar in the BlueTides simulation, the largest volume cosmological hydrodynamic simulation so far carried out. We present predictions for gas outflows around the brightest $z = 7.54$ quasar which hosts the most massive black hole in the simulatio…
Earliest quasars at the cosmic dawn are powered by mass accretion onto supermassive black holes of a billion solar masses. Massive black hole seeds forming through the direct collapse mechanism are considered the most promising candidates but how do they grow and co-evolve with their host galaxies at early cosmic times remains unknown. We here present results from a cosmological radiation hydrodynamical simulation including self-consistent modeling of both Pop III and Pop II star formation, their radiative and supernova feedback in the host galaxy along with X-ray feedback from an accreting ma…
The properties of quasar-host galaxies might be determined by the growth and feedback of their supermassive (SMBH, $10^{8-10}$ M$_{\odot}$) black holes. We investigate such connection with a suite of cosmological simulations of massive (halo mass $\approx 10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$) galaxies at $z\simeq 6$ which include a detailed sub-grid multiphase gas and accretion model. BH seeds of initial mass $10^5$ M$_{\odot}$ grow mostly by gas accretion, and become SMBH by $z=6$ setting on the observed $M_{\rm BH} - M_{\star}$ relation without the need for a boost factor. Although quasar feedback crucially…
This paper reviews the question of whether the wide separation double quasar Q2138-431 is a gravitational lens. From early work, the two quasar images are known to have almost identical spectra and redshifts, but no lensing galaxy has so far been detected. In this paper we used recent deep surveys in infrared and optical bands to search for the presence of a galaxy with the expected properties of a gravitational lens. The search revealed a $5 σ$ detection of a faint galaxy between the two quasar images on a deep $J$-band frame from the VISTA Science Archive, with apparent magnitude $J = 20.68$…
The systematic targeting of extended Ly$α$ emission around high-redshift quasars resulted in the discovery of rare and bright Enormous Ly$α$ Nebulae (ELANe) associated with multiple active galactic nuclei (AGN). We here initiate "a multiwavelength study of ELAN environments" (AMUSE$^2$) focusing on the ELAN around the $z\sim3$ quasar SDSS J1040+1020, a.k.a. the Fabulous ELAN. We report on VLT/HAWK-I, APEX/LABOCA, JCMT/SCUBA-2, SMA/850$μ$m, ALMA/CO(5-4) and 2mm observations and compare them to previously published VLT/MUSE data. The continuum and line detections enable a first estimate of the s…
It is shown that a mechanism of PBH formation from high-baryon bubbles with log-normal mass spectrum naturally leads to the central mass of the PBH distribution close to ten solar masses independently of the model details. This result is in good agreement with observations.
We perform a Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) modeling of the projected two-point correlation function (2PCF) of quasars that are observed in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) telescope with counter-parts in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release (DR)-8 quasar catalog at a median redshift of $z\sim 1.04 (\pm 0.58)$. Using a four parameter HOD model we derive the host mass scales of WISE selected quasars. Our results show that the median halo masses of central and satellite quasars lie in the range $M_{\mathrm{cen}} = (5 \pm 1.0) \times 10^{12} M_{\odot}$ and $M_{\mathr…
We investigate quasar outflows at $z \geq 6$ by performing zoom-in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. By employing the SPH code GADGET-3, we zoom in the $2 R_{200}$ region around a $2 \times 10^{12} M_{\odot}$ halo at $z = 6$, inside a $(500 ~ {\rm Mpc})^3$ comoving volume. We compare the results of our AGN runs with a control simulation in which only stellar/SN feedback is considered. Seeding $10^5 M_{\odot}$ BHs at the centers of $10^{9} M_{\odot}$ halos, we find the following results. BHs accrete gas at the Eddington rate over $z = 9 - 6$. At $z = 6$, our most-massive BH has grown to …
We show that quasar microlensing magnification statistics induced by a population of point microlenses distributed according to a mass-spectrum can be very well approximated by that of a single-mass, "monochromatic", population. When the spatial resolution (physically defined by the source size) is small as compared with the Einstein radius, the mass of the monochromatic population matches the geometric mean of the mass-spectrum. Otherwise, the best-fit mass can be larger. Taking into account the degeneracy with the geometric mean, the interpretation of quasar microlensing observations under t…
Recent quasar surveys have revealed that supermassive black holes (SMBHs) rarely exceed a mass of $M_{\rm BH} \sim {\rm a~few}\times10^{10}~M_{\odot}$ during the entire cosmic history. It has been argued that quenching of the BH growth is caused by a transition of a nuclear accretion disk into an advection dominated accretion flow, with which strong outflows and/or jets are likely to be associated. We investigate a relation between the maximum mass of SMBHs and the radio-loudness of quasars with a well-defined sample of $\sim 10^5$ quasars at a redshift range of $0<z<2$, obtained from the Sloa…
We present the discovery of PSO J083.8371+11.8482, a weak emission line quasar with extreme star formation rate at $z=6.3401$. This quasar was selected from Pan-STARRS1, UHS, and unWISE photometric data. Gemini/GNIRS spectroscopy follow-up indicates a MgII-based black hole mass of $M_\mathrm{BH}=\left(2.0^{+0.7}_{-0.4}\right)\times10^9~M_\odot$ and an Eddington ratio of $L_\mathrm{bol}/L_\mathrm{Edd}=0.5^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$, in line with actively accreting supermassive black hole (SMBH) at $z\gtrsim6$. HST imaging sets strong constraint on lens-boosting, showing no relevant effect on the apparent e…
An anomaly in the distribution of quasar magnitudes based on the SDSS survey, has been recently reported by Longo (2012). The angular size of this anomaly is of the order of $\rm \pm 15^o$ on the sky. A low surface brightness smooth structure in $γ$-rays, coincides with the sky location and extent of the quasar anomaly, and is close to the Northern component of a pair of $γ$-ray bubbles discovered in the \sl Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope \rm survey. Molecular clouds are thought to be illuminated by cosmic rays. I test the hypothesis that the magnitude anomaly in the quasar distribution, is d…
We present the 78-ks Chandra observations of the $z=6.4$ quasar SDSS J1148+5251. The source is clearly detected in the energy range 0.3-7 keV with 42 counts (with a significance $\gtrsim9σ$). The X-ray spectrum is best-fitted by a power-law with photon index $Γ=1.9$ absorbed by a gas column density of $\rm N_{\rm H}=2.0^{+2.0}_{-1.5}\times10^{23}\,\rm cm^{-2}$. We measure an intrinsic luminosity at 2-10 keV and 10-40 keV equal to $\sim 1.5\times 10^{45}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$, comparable with luminous local and intermediate-redshift quasar properties. Moreover, the X-ray to optical power-law slope va…
Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) play a crucial role in the evolution of galaxies and are currently detected up to $z\sim 7.5$. Theories describing black hole (BH) growth are challenged by how rapidly seeds with initial mass $M_{\bullet} \lesssim 10^5 \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, formed at $z \sim 20-30$, grew to $M_{\bullet} \sim 10^9 \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ by $z\sim 7$. Here we study the effects of the value of the Hubble parameter, $H_0$, on models describing the early growth of BHs. First, we note that the predicted mass of a quasar at $z=6$ changes by $> 300$% if the underlying Hubble paramete…
We examine multiple AGN systems (triples and quadruples, in particular) in the \texttt{MassiveBlackII} simulation over a redshift range of $0.06\lesssim z \lesssim 4$. We identify AGN systems (with bolometric luminosity $L_{\mathrm{bol}}>10^{42}~\mathrm{ergs/sec}$) at different scales~(defined by the maximum distance between member AGNs) to determine the AGN multiplicity functions. This is defined as the volume/ surface density of AGN systems per unit \textit{richness} $R$, the number of AGNs in a system. We find that gravitationally bound multiple AGN systems tend to populate scales of $\less…
We present a survey of the [CII] 158 $μ$m line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) dust continuum emission in a sample of 27 z>6 quasars using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) at ~1" resolution. The [CII] line was significantly detected (at >5-sigma) in 23 sources (85%). We find typical line luminosities of $L_{\rm [CII]}=10^{9-10}$ L$_\odot$, and an average line width of ~385 km/s. The [CII]-to-far-infrared luminosity ratio ([CII]/FIR) in our sources span one order of magnitude, highlighting a variety of conditions in the star-forming medium. Four quasar host galaxies are clearly resol…

We present cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of a quasar-mass halo ($M_{\rm halo} \approx 10^{12.5}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$ at z=2) that for the first time resolve gas transport down to the inner 0.1 pc surrounding the central massive black hole. We model a multi-phase interstellar medium including stellar feedback by supernovae, stellar winds, and radiation, and a hyper-Lagrangian refinement technique increasing the resolution dynamically approaching the black hole. We do not include black hole feedback. We show that the sub-pc inflow rate (1) can reach ~6 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$ roughly in steady…
We present a study of the morphology and intensity of star formation in the host galaxies of eight Palomar-Green quasars using observations with the Hubble Space Telescope. Our observations are motivated by recent evidence for a close relationship between black hole growth and the stellar mass evolution in its host galaxy. We use narrow-band [O II] $λ$3727, H$β$, [O III] $λ$5007 and Pa$α$ images, taken with the WFPC2 and NICMOS instruments, to map the morphology of line-emitting regions, and, after extinction corrections, diagnose the excitation mechanism and infer star-formation rates. Signif…
Assuming a population of Black Holes (BHs) with masses in the range inferred by LIGO/Virgo from BH mergers, we use quasar microlensing observations to estimate their abundances. We consider a mixed population of stars and BHs and the presence of a smooth dark matter component. We adopt reverberation mapping estimates of the quasar size. According to a Bayesian analysis of the measured microlensing magnifications, a population of BHs with masses $\sim$ 30$M_{\odot}$ constitutes less than 0.4 % of the total matter at 68 % confidence level (less than 0.9 % at 90 % confidence). We have explored th…
We cross-correlate a cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing map with the projected space densities of quasars to measure the bias and halo masses of a quasar sample split into obscured and unobscured populations, the first application of this method to distinct quasar subclasses. Several recent studies of the angular clustering of obscured quasars have shown that these objects likely reside in higher-mass halos compared to their unobscured counterparts. This has important implications for models of the structure and geometry of quasars, their role in growing supermassive black holes, and mu…
(Abridged) In the last decade several massive molecular gas reservoirs were found <100 kpc distance from active galactic nuclei (AGNs), residing in gas-rich companion galaxies. The study of AGN-gas-rich companion systems opens the opportunity to determine whether the stellar mass of massive local galaxies was formed in their host after a merger event or outside of their host galaxy in a close starbursting companion and later incorporated via mergers. We study the quasar-companion galaxy system of SMM J04135+10277 (z=2.84) and investigate the expected frequency of quasar-starburst galaxy pairs …
We present the first Keck/OSIRIS infrared IFU observations of a high redshift damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) galaxy detected in the line of sight to a background quasar. By utilizing the Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics (LGSAO) to reduce the quasar PSF to FWHM~0.15 arcsec, we were able to search for and map the foreground DLA emission free from the quasar contamination. We present maps of the H-alpha and [OIII] $λλ$ 5007, 4959 emission of DLA 2222-0946 at a redshift of z ~ 2.35. From the composite spectrum over the H-alpha emission region we measure a star formation rate of 9.5 $\pm$ 1.0 M$_{\odot}$…
Q0151+048 is a physical QSO pair at z ~ 1.929 with a separation of 3.3 arcsec on the sky. In the spectrum of Q0151+048A (qA), a DLA is observed at a higher redshift. We have previously detected the host galaxies of both QSOs, as well as a Lya blob. We performed low-resolution spectroscopy with the slit aligned with the extended emission. We also observed the system using the medium-resolution VLT/X-shooter spectrograph and the slit aligned with the two QSOs. We measure systemic redshifts of zem(A)=1.92924{\pm}0.00036 and zem(B)=1.92863{\pm}0.00042 from the Hβ and Hα emission lines, respectivel…
We propose a scenario in which a strong Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking in the early universe results in large inhomogeneities of the initial QCD axion field value, leading to the formation of very dense axion bubbles. Some of the axion bubbles subsequently collapse into primordial black holes (PBHs). The spatially homogeneous part of the QCD axion explains dark matter of the universe, while the PBHs arising from the axion bubbles can explain the LIGO events or the seed of supermassive black holes. Interestingly, the mass of PBH is determined by the axion decay constant; for $f_a = 10^{17}…
The $M_{\bullet} - σ$ relation establishes a connection between central black holes (BHs) and their host spheroids. Supported by observations at $M_{\bullet} \gtrsim 10^5 \, M_{\odot}$, there is limited data on its validity at lower masses. Employing a semi-analytical model to simulate the combined evolution of BHs and their host galaxies, we predict the observational consequences of assuming a bimodality in the accretion efficiency of BHs, with low-mass BHs ($M_{\bullet} \lesssim 10^5 \, M_{\odot}$) accreting inefficiently. We predict a departure from the $M_{\bullet} - σ$ relation at a trans…
Recent observations have found that many $z\sim 6$ quasar fields lack galaxies. This unexpected lack of galaxies may potentially be explained by quasar radiation feedback. In this paper I present a suite of 3D radiative transfer cosmological simulations of quasar fields. I find that quasar radiation suppresses star formation in low mass galaxies, mainly by photo-dissociating their molecular hydrogen. Photo-heating also plays a role, but only after $\sim$100 Myr. However, galaxies which already have stellar mass above $10^5 M_\odot$ when the quasar turns on will not be suppressed significantly.…
Using cosmological, radiation-hydrodynamic simulations targeting a rare $\approx \, 2 \times 10^{12} \, \rm M_\odot$ halo at $z \, = \, 6$, we show that the number counts and internal properties of satellite galaxies within the massive halo are sensitively regulated by a combination of local stellar radiative feedback and strong tidal forces. Radiative feedback operates before the first supernova explosions erupt and results in less tightly-bound galaxies. Satellites are therefore more vulnerable to tidal stripping when they accrete onto the main progenitor and are tidally disrupted on a signi…

We present MUSE observations of the field of the quasar Q0152$-$020 whose spectrum shows a Lyman limit system (LLS) at redshift $z_{\rm abs} = 0.38$, with a metallicity Z $\gtrsim 0.06$ Z$_\odot$. The low ionization metal lines associated with the LLS present two narrow distinct absorption components with a velocity separation of 26 km ${\rm s}^{-1}$. We detect six galaxies within 600 km ${\rm s}^{-1}$ from the absorption redshift; their projected distances from the quasar sightline range from 60 to 200 kpc. The optical spectra of five of these galaxies exhibit prominent nebular emission lines…
We present the discovery of copious molecular gas in the halo of cid_346, a $z=2.2$ quasar studied as part of the SINFONI survey for Unveiling the Physics and Effect of Radiative feedback (SUPER). New Atacama Compact Array (ACA) CO(3-2) observations detect a much higher flux (by a factor of $14\pm5$) than measured on kiloparsec scales ($r\lesssim8$ kpc) using previous snapshot Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array data. Such additional CO(3-2) emission traces a structure that extends out to $r\sim200$ kpc in projected size, as inferred through direct imaging and confirmed by an analysis…
