Design-oriented boundary conditions for subharmonic oscillations are of great interest recently. Based on a subharmonic oscillation boundary condition reported in a PhD thesis more than a decade ago, extended new boundary conditions are derived in closed forms for general switching DC-DC converters. Sampled-data and harmonic balance analyses are applied and generate equivalent results. It is shown that equivalent series resistance causes the boundary conditions for voltage/current mode control to have similar forms. Some recently reported boundary conditions become special cases in view of the general boundary conditions derived. New Nyquist-like design-oriented plots are proposed to predict or prevent the occurrence of the subharmonic oscillation. The relation between the crossover frequency and the subharmonic oscillation is also analyzed.
This paper investigates a new method to model and control variable-frequency power converters in a switching-synchronized sampled-state space for cycle-by-cycle digital control. There are a number of significant benefits in comparison to other methods including fast dynamic performance together with ease of design and implementation. Theoretical results are presented and verified through hardware, and simulations of a current-mode buck converter with constant on-time and a current-mode boost converter with constant off-time. Dynamic voltage scaling for microprocessors and LiDAR are among the a…
This paper presents a Direct Mapped Method (DMM) for real-time simulation of high switching frequency resonant converters. The DMM links state variables to diode statuses and provides an exact and noniterative solution to network equations. The proposed method is implemented on FPGA to simulate an LLC converter with switching frequencies ranging up to 500 kHz. The best reported implementations of DMM achieve a 25 ns simulation time-step for a wide range of clock frequencies, ranging from 40 MHz to 320 MHz.
This paper proposes a novel switching algorithm for modular multilevel converters (MMCs) that significantly reduces the switching frequency while fulfilling all control objectives required for their proper operation. Unlike in the conventional capacitor voltage-balancing strategies, in addition to submodule (SM) capacitor voltages, the proposed algorithm considers previous switching statuses during sorting. The algorithm is applied to a seven-level back-to-back MMC-HVDC system and tested under various operating conditions. Significant reduction in the switching frequency with trivial impacts o…
Partial resonance high frequency AC link converters are recognized to provide soft-switching, single-stage power conversion. They are highly reliable due to elimination of DC capacitors. Previous work has focused on proof of concept topologies and design requirements. In this work, a current regulated AC-DC converter from this family of converters is presented. The control design and grid integration requirements are discussed. An active damping method using grid current feedback is implemented to mitigate the filter resonance oscillations. The current control is implemented in the synchronous…
Unlike conventional converters, modular multilevel converter (MMC) has a higher switching frequency -- which has direct implication on important parameters like converter loss and reliability -- mainly due to increased number of switching components. However, conventional switching techniques, where submodule sorting is just based on capacitor voltage balancing, are not able to achieve switching frequency reduction objective. A novel modulation algorithm for modular multilevel converters (MMCs) is proposed in this paper to reduce the switching frequency of MMC operation by defining a constrain…
The power flow control of multi-active bridge converters requires a comprehensive steady-state analysis of the converter and the determination of conditions for zero voltage switching of all switching in the converter which result in minimum switching loss. This paper aims to model and carry out the power flow and Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) analyses of Quad-active-bridge (QAB) dc-dc converter. The dynamic as well as the steady state analyses of the converter were carried out, thereby determining the phase shifts required to meet commanded load powers. The full equivalent circuit model of the…
Skipped Adjacency Pulse Width Modulation: Zero Voltage Switching over Full Duty Cycle Range for Hybrid Flying Capacitor Multi-Level Converters without Dynamic Level Changing
In automotive power electronics, distortion and electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated by the switching action of power semiconductors can be a significant challenge for the design of a compact, lightweight vehicle. As semiconductor switching frequencies increase, e.g., through the introduction of new materials, such as gallium nitride and silicon carbide, this problem becomes more severe. We present a control scheme for an automotive dc-to-dc converter that reduces the EMI generated by shaping switching distortion predictively at the run time. The multistep model-predictive control sche…
In this work, the problem of switching control design for DC-DC boost converter is considered, in the case of operation under uncertain equilibrium condition arising due to perturbations in the input and load parameters. Assuming that these uncertain parameters are generated via a known linear exo-system, a parameter estimator is designed to update the equilibrium point for the switching controller in real-time. In order to mitigate the noise amplification problem associated with the designed parameter estimator, the estimation error injection term is filtered via a set of first-order filters …
The design of gate drivers is an important topic in power converter topologies that can help reduce switching losses and increase power density. Gate driving techniques that offer zero-voltage switching and/or zero current switching have recently been successfully proposed for different modular multilevel converters such as the cascaded H bridge. Previous papers on other multilevel converters such as the multi-active bridge, however, do not sufficiently assess the topics of gate driver design for this topology. This work presents a novel isolated gate driver architecture tailored to the multi-…

In this paper, we presented a matrix converter with a high-frequency DC link for EV DC fast charging applications. Introducing this topology allows eliminating electrolytic capacitors in DC link of the converter, which potentially increases the reliability and power density of the system. The converter uses bidirectionally blocking three-phase rectifier to generate a high-frequency square wave voltage for the series resonant LC DC/DC converter, eliminating one H-bridge in front of the resonant tank. Principles of high-frequency and low-frequency modulations are described. A low voltage prototy…
This paper proposes a method of transferring physical continuous and switching/converter circuits working in continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) to graph representation, independent of the connection or the number of circuit components, so that machine learning (ML) algorithms and applications can be easily applied. Such methodology is generalized and is applicable to circuits with any number of switches, components, sources and loads, and can be useful in applications such as artificial intelligence (AI) based circuit design automation, layout optimization…
Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers are the need of the hour as EVs have invaded the commercial automobile market. The Three-Phase Three-Switch (TPTS) converter has features which make it ideal to act as the charging station because of its high efficiency at peak power rating. Traditionally, control of the TPTS converter has been achieved by the Space Vector (SV) based modulation scheme whose implementation is burdensome due to the trigonometric calculations involved. This paper introduces two simplified carrier based modulation schemes, which greatly reduce the implementation difficulty, as they r…
This article is the second part of a paper series about interference in extremum (i.e., peak or valley) current-mode control, which applies to both fixed and variable switching frequency power converters. Specifically, this part presents three control conditioning methods that mitigate the adverse effect of interference. These methods are new ways to use: (i) slope compensation; (ii) low-pass filtering; and (iii) the phenomenon of comparator-overdrive-delay, for control conditioning. The stability criterion, closed-loop dynamics, and transient performance are derived with mathematical rigor fo…
In recent years, the use of multilevel inverter has become popular due to its many advantages. Due to the popularity of multilevel inverters in industries and in applications that require a wide range of voltages, there have been many challenges to achieve high-quality voltage. Many pieces of research have been done to solve the problem of annoying harmonics in multilevel inverters. In this study, pulse width modulation (PWM) has been proposed as a switching method. Using the Selective Harmonic Elimination (SHE) technique, the inverter switching can be carried out in low frequency, and also, t…

Current-mode control is one of the most popular controller strategies for power converters. With the advent of wide bandgap devices including GaN and SiC, higher switching frequencies have become more viable at higher power because of lower switching losses. However, the advantage of higher switching frequency for faster, higher bandwidth control is squandered because of current sensor interference. We present a framework for characterizing and analyzing this interference as uncertainties to the controller model. These uncertainties introduce additional dynamics and nonlinearity that can resul…
In this work we present a novel dual-port grid-forming control strategy, for permanent magnet synchronous generator wind turbines with back-to-back voltage source converters, that unifies the entire range of functions from maximum power point tracking (MPPT) to providing inertia and fast frequency response without explicit mode switching between grid-following and grid-forming control. The controls impose a well-defined AC voltage at the grid-side converter (GSC) and the machine-side converter (MSC) AC terminals and explicitly stabilize the DC-link capacitor voltage through both GSC and MSC.
