This paper presents a detailed assessment of the ability of the 240 Skyrme interaction parameter sets in the literature to satisfy a series of criteria derived from macroscopic properties of nuclear matter in the vicinity of nuclear saturation density at zero temperature and their density dependence, derived by the liquid drop model, experiments with giant resonances and heavy-ion collisions. The objective is to identify those parameterizations which best satisfy the current understanding of the physics of nuclear matter over a wide range of applications. Out of the 240 models, only 16 are shown to satisfy all these constraints. Additional, more microscopic, constraints on density dependence of the neutron and proton effective mass beta-equilibrium matter, Landau parameters of symmetric and pure neutron nuclear matter, and observational data on high- and low-mass cold neutron stars further reduce this number to 5, a very small group of recommended Skyrme parameterizations to be used in future applications of the Skyrme interaction of nuclear matter related observables. Full information on partial fulfillment of individual constraints by all Skyrme models considered is given. The results are discussed in terms of the physical interpretation of the Skyrme interaction and the validity of its use in mean-field models. Future work on application of the Skyrme forces, selected on the basis of variables of nuclear matter, in Hartree-Fock calculation of properties of finite nuclei, is outlined.
In the present work, we systematically study the proton radioactivity half-lives of 33 spherical nuclei based on the relationship between the Skyrme parameters and the macroscopic quantities of nuclear matter. Using the two-potential approach with the spherical Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model, the correlation between proton radioactivity half-life and macroscopic quantities was analyzed. Moreover, we obtained a new Skyrme parameter set by fitting the two most weighted macroscopic quantities. Compared with Skyrme parameters MSL0 and the theoretical model of proton radioactivity UDLP, the theoretical …
We present the explicit form of the next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO) Skyrme interaction in momentum space by including the fourth-order gradient potentials to the standard Skyrme interaction. With the N$^2$LO Skyrme interaction, we evaluate the second-order corrections to the nuclear bulk quantities of nuclear matter: equation of state (EoS) of isospin symmetric and pure neutron matter, density-dependent in-medium effective nucleon mass, isospin-asymmetry energy, pressure and incompressibility. These second-order contributions are ultraviolet (UV) divergent due to the zero range charact…
Modeling Nuclear Pasta and the Transition to Uniform Nuclear Matter with the 3D Skyrme-Hartree-Fock Method at Finite Temperature I: Core-Collapse Supernovae
We present the formalism of linear response theory both at zero and finite temperature in the case of asymmetric nuclear matter excited by an isospin flip probe. The particle-hole interaction is derived from a general Skyrme functional that includes spin-orbit and tensor terms. Response functions are obtained by solving a closed algebraic system of equations. Spin strength functions are analyzed for typical values of density, momentum transfer, asymmetry and temperature.
Phenomenological effective interactions like Skyrme forces are currently used in mean--field calculations in nuclear physics. Mean--field models have strong analogies with the first order of the perturbative many--body problem and the currently used effective interactions are adjusted at the mean--field level. In this work, we analyze the renormalizability of the nuclear many--body problem in the case where the effective Skyrme interaction is employed in its standard form and the perturbative problem is solved up to second order. We focus on symmetric nuclear matter and its equation of state, …
We discuss major differences between electric and magnetic excitations in nuclei appearing in self-consistent calculation based on Skyrme energy-density functionals. Tools of analysis are Landau-Migdal parameters for bulk properties and RPA for resonance modes of $^{208}$Pb as representative of finite nuclei. We show that the relation between the effective mass and the effective particle-hole interaction, well known in the Landau-Migdal theory, explains the success of self-consistent calculations of electric transitions in such approaches. This effect, however, does not automatically exist in …
Recent progress in theory, experiment and observation challenges the mean field models using the conventional Skyrme interaction, suggesting that the extension of the conventional Skyrme interaction is necessary. In this work, by fitting the experimental data of a number of finite nuclei together with a few additional constraints on nuclear matter using the simulated annealing method, we construct three Skyrme interaction parameter sets, namely, eMSL07, eMSL08 and eMSL09, based on an extended Skyrme interaction which includes additional momentum and density dependent two-body forces to effecti…
A new Skyrme functional has been developed with tensor term guided by ab initio relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) studies on neutron-proton drops. Instead of extracting information on the tensor force from experimental single-particle energy splittings, the RBHF calculations do not contain beyond mean-field effects such as particle-vibration coupling and therefore the information on the tensor force can be obtained without ambiguities. The new functional gives a good description of nuclear ground-state properties as well as various giant resonances. The description for the evolution o…
The uncertainty in the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) of $0νββ$ decay for $^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{128}$Te, $^{130}$Te, and $^{136}$Xe in the self-consistent quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) method is investigated by using eighteen Skyrme interactions supplemented with either a volume- or surface-type of pairing interactions. The NMEs for the isotopes concerned (except $^{136}$Xe) are less sensitive to the particle-hole ($ph$) interactions, while strongly dependent on the employed isovector particle-particle ($pp$) pairing interactions even though the pairing strengths are optim…
We report here the current developments on the Brussels-Skyrme-on-a-Grid (BSkG) atomic mass models. In comparison with our previous models, BSkG3 improves the infinite nuclear matter (INM) properties which opens its applications to neutron stars. The results presented here show that BSkG3 preserve the excellent agreement with experimental nuclear masses and radii, together with fission barriers of actinides obtained by BSkG1 and BSkG2, while the nuclear matter properties are considerably improved.
A state-of-the-art approach for calculating the finite nuclear size correction to atomic energy levels and the bound-electron $g$ factor is introduced and demonstrated for a series of highly charged hydrogen-like ions. Firstly, self-consistent mean-field calculations based on the Skyrme-type nuclear interaction are employed in order to produce a realistic nuclear proton distribution. In the second step, the obtained nuclear charge density is used to construct the potential of an extended nucleus, and the Dirac equation is solved numerically. The ambiguity in the choice of a Skyrme parametrizat…
The half-lives of proton radioactivity of proton emitters are investigated theoretically by using KDE0v1 Skyrme interaction. The total barrier potential in the proton radioactive nuclei is calculated as the sum of the nuclear, Coulomb and centrifugal contributions. The Hartree-Fock nuclear density distributions is used in calculating the nuclear as well as the Coulomb interaction potentials. The quantum mechanical tunneling probability is calculated within the WKB approximation. These calculations provide reasonable estimates for the observed proton radioactivity lifetimes.
Neutrino emission and their transport of energy to the supernova shock region are sensitive to the physics of hot and dense nuclear matter, which is a complex problem due to the strong correlations induced by nuclear forces. We derive charged-current opacities for electron neutrinos and antineutrinos in supernova matter using a self-consistent approach based on the Skyrme effective interaction. We include a mean field energy shift due to nuclear interaction and corrections due to RPA correlations. A complete treatment of the full Skyrme interaction, including a spin-orbit term, is given. To te…
In the present paper we explore the neutron-drip region of cold non-rotating isolated neutron stars. We have performed extended nuclear-structure calculations for nuclei embedded in the electron gas. For modeling the outer crust we use a set of Wigner-Seitz cells, where every cell contains one nucleus surrounded by a cloud of relativistic electrons. Above the drip point a non-relativistic neutron gas occurs in the cell. These calculations are carried out within the Hartree-Fock approach in combination with Skyrme effective interactions. For every baryon density we have determined the configura…
We have performed a systematic study of the ground state for even-even 1,002 nuclei in which 28 octupole-deformed nuclei are found. The interplay between the spatial deformation and the pairing correlation, plays important roles in nuclear structure. Our model is based on the Skyrme Hartree-Fock plus BCS model represented in the three-dimensional Cartesian coordinate space which can describe any kind of nuclear shape. The quadrupole and octupole deformed nuclei appear in the mass region with characteristic neutron and proton numbers which are consistent with previous studies. In our results, t…
Within the framework of Skyrme energy-density functional theory, the nucleus-nucleus potential is calculated and potential energy surface is obtained with different effective forces for accurately estimating the formation cross sections of superheavy nuclei in massive fusion reactions. The width and height of the potential pocket are influenced by the Skyrme effective forces SkM, SkM$^{\ast}$, SkP, SIII, Ska and SLy4, which correspond to the different equation of state for the isospin symmetry nuclear matter. It is found that the nucleus-nucleus potential is associated with the collision orien…
The binary neutron-star merger event, GW170817, has cast a new light on nuclear physics research. Using a neutron-star model that includes a crust equation of state (EoS), we calculate the properties of a 1.4 solar-mass neutron star. The model incorporates more than 200 Skyrme energy density functionals, which describe nuclear matter properties, in the outer liquid core region of the neutron star. We find a power-law relation between the neutron-star tidal deformability, $Λ$, and the neutron-star radius, R. Without an explicit crust EoS, the model predicts smaller R and the difference becomes …
The three-body force is indispensable in nuclear energy density functionals which leads to a density dependent two-body term in the Hartree-Fock approach. Usually a single factional power of density dependency has been adopted. We consider the possibility of an additional higher-order density dependence in extended Skyrme forces. As a result, new extended Skyrme parametertizations based on the SLy4 force are obtained and the improvements in descriptions of global nuclei have been demonstrated. The higher-order term can also substantially affect nuclear properties in the high density region in …
