Growth of Interaction Between Antiprotons (Negative Hyperons) and Nuclei in Polarized Matter: The Possibility to Study the Spin-Dependent Part of the Forward Scattering Amplitude in the Range of Low-Energies
The influence of Coulomb interaction on the phenomenon of "optical" spin rotation of negatively charged particles (antiprotons, etc.) moving in matter with polarized nuclei is considered. It is shown that because the density of the antiproton (negative hyperon) wave function on the nucleus increases, the spin precession frequency grows as the particle decelerates. As a result, spin rotation of negatively charged particles becomes observable despite their rapid deceleration. This provides information about the spin--dependent part of the amplitude of coherent elastic zero--angle scattering in the range of low energies, where scattering experiments are practically impossible to perform.
We study the strangeness production in antiproton-nucleus collisions at the beam momenta from 200 MeV/c to 15 GeV/c within the Giessen Botzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) transport model. The GiBUU model contains a very detailed description of the underlying antinucleon-nucleon cross sections, in-particular, of the strangeness production channels. We compare our calculations with the bubble chamber data on Λ- and K^0_S-production in antiproton-nucleus collisions and with the earlier intranuclear cascade calculations. The contributions of the various partial channels to the hyperon production ar…
In this work we propose a new method to measure the evolution of the neutron skin thickness between different isotopes. We consider antiproton-nucleus interactions close to the production threshold of $Λ\overlineΛ$ and $Σ\overlineΛ$ pairs. At low energies, $Λ\overlineΛ$ pairs are produced in p + p collisions, while $Σ\overlineΛ$ pairs can only be produced in p + n interactions. Measuring these cross sections provides information on the neutron skin thickness
The results of the microscopic transport calculations of $\bar p$-nucleus interactions within a GiBUU model are presented. The dominating mechanism of hyperon production is the strangeness exchange processes $\bar K N \to Y π$ and $\bar K N \to ΞK$. The calculated rapidity spectra of $Ξ$ hyperons are significantly shifted to forward rapidities with respect to the spectra of $S=-1$ hyperons. We argue that this shift should be a sensitive test for the possible exotic mechanisms of $\bar p$-nucleus annihilation. The production of the double $Λ$-hypernuclei by $Ξ^-$ interaction with a secondary ta…
Strange particles and hyperfragments in collisions of antiprotons and protons on nuclei have been investigated systematically within a microscopic transport model. The hyperons are produced from the annihilation in antibaryon-baryon collisions and strangeness exchange process in antiproton induced reactions. A coalescence approach is used for constructing the primary hyperfragments in phase space and the statistical model is modified for describing the decay of hyperfragments via evaporating hyperon, neutron, charged particles etc, in which the shell effect, binding energy and root-mean-square…
Antiproton annihilations on nuclei provide a very interesting way to study the behaviour of strange particles in the nuclear medium. In low energy $\bar p$ annihilations, the hyperons are produced mostly by strangeness exchange mechanisms. Thus, hyperon production in $\bar p A$ interactions is very sensitive to the properties of the antikaon-nucleon interaction in nuclear medium. Within the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model (GiBUU), we analyse the experimental data on $Λ$ and $K^0_S$ production in $\bar p A$ collisions at $p_{\rm lab}=0.2-4$ GeV/c. A satisfactory overall agre…
Apart from the $pd$ reaction also the scattering of antiprotons with transversal polarization $p_y^p$ on deuterons with tensor polarization $P_{xz}$ provides a null-test signal for time-reversal-invariance violating but parity conserving effects. Assuming that the time-reversal-invariance violating $\bar NN$ interaction contains the same operator structure as the $NN$ interaction, we discuss the energy dependence of the null-test signal in $\bar pd$ scattering on the basis of a calculation within the spin-dependent Glauber theory at beam energies of 50-300 MeV.
The quantum molecular dynamics model has been improved to investigate the reaction dynamics induced by antiprotons. The reaction channels of elastic scattering, annihilation, charge exchange and inelastic collisions have been included in the model. Dynamics on particle production, in particular pions, kaons, antikaons and hyperons, is investigated in collisions of $\overline{p}$ on $^{12}$C, $^{20}$Ne, $^{40}$Ca, $^{112}$Sn, $^{181}$Ta, $^{197}$Au and $^{238}$U from a low to high incident momentum. The rapidity and momentum distributions of $π^{+}$ and protons from the LEAR measurements can be…
The production of strangeness on the nucleon and hyperon and hypernuclear production in heavy ion collisions at relativistic energies and in antiproton annihilation on nuclei is discussed. The reaction process is described by transport theory with focus on $S=-2$ channels and a comparison of different model interactions. The interactions of hyperons in nuclear matter is investigated in a novel SU(3) approach. An outlook to the $S=-3$ sector and $Ω^-$ physics is given.
Studying antiproton scattering by nuclei (atoms) in the range of low energies, we found out that the increase in the antiproton-nucleus scattering amplitude through Coulomb interaction provides the possibility to investigate spin-dependent processes accompanying the interaction of antiprotons with nuclei (polarized or unpolarized) by means of mirror reflection of antiprotons from the vacuum-matter boundary, diffraction and channeling (surface diffraction and channeling) of antiprotons in crystals.
We present predictions of the unweighted and weighted double spin asymmetries related to the transversal helicity distribution $g_{1T}$ and the longitudinal transversity distribution $h_{1L}^\perp$, two of eight leading-twist transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) or three-dimensional parton distribution functions (3dPDFs), in the polarized proton-antiproton Drell-Yan process at typical kinematics on the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR). We conclude that FAIR is ideal to access the new 3dPDFs towards a detailed picture of the nucleon structure.
Starting from the Feynman diagram representation of multiple scattering we consider the polarized $χ_c$(1P)-charmonia production in antiproton-nucleus reactions close to the threshold ($p_{\rm lab}=5-7$ GeV/c). The rescattering and absorption of the incoming antiproton and outgoing charmonium on nucleons are taken into account, including the possibility of the elastic and nondiagonal (flavor-conserving) scattering $χ_{cJ} N \to χ_{cJ^\prime} N$, $J,J^\prime=0,1,2$. The elementary amplitudes of the latter processes are evaluated by expanding the physical $χ_c$-states in the Clebsch-Gordan serie…
We show that the polarized proton-antiproton Drell-Yan process is ideal to probe the pretzelosity distribution ($h_{1T}^\perp$), which is one of the new transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions of the nucleon. We present predictions of the $\cos(2ϕ+ ϕ_a - ϕ_b)$ asymmetry in the transversely polarized proton-antiproton Drell-Yan process at PAX kinematics and find that the results are significantly larger compared with those of the $\sin(3ϕ_h - ϕ_S)$ asymmetry in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering process at HERMES, COMPASS, and JLab kinematics. We conclude that the $\cos(2ϕ+…
Using dispersion theory the low-energy electromagnetic form factors for the transition of a Sigma to a Lambda hyperon are related to the pion vector form factor. The additionally required input, i.e. the two-pion--Sigma--Lambda amplitudes are determined from relativistic next-to-leading-order (NLO) baryon chiral perturbation theory including the baryons from the octet and optionally from the decuplet. Pion rescattering is again taken into account by dispersion theory. It turns out that the inclusion of decuplet baryons is not an option but a necessity to obtain reasonable results. The electric…
Stored antiprotons beams in the GeV range represent a unparalleled factory for hyperon-antihyperon pairs. Their outstanding large production probability in antiproton collisions will open the floodgates for a series of new studies of strange hadronic systems with unprecedented precision. The behavior of hyperons and -- for the first time -- of antihyperons in nuclear systems can be studied under well controlled conditions. The exclusive production of $Λ\barΛ$ and $Σ^-\barΛ$ pairs in antiproton-nucleus interactions probe the neutron and proton distribution in the nuclear periphery and will help…
Within the framework of the Lanzhou quantum molecular dynamics (LQMD) transport model, the nuclear fragmentation induced by low-energy antiprotons has been investigated thoroughly. A coalescence approach is developed for constructing the primary fragments in phase space. The secondary decay process of the fragments is described by the well-known statistical code. It is found that the localized energy released in antibaryon-baryon annihilation is deposited in a nucleus mainly via pion-nucleon collisions, which leads to the emissions of pre-equilibrium particles, fission, evaporation of nucleons…
The exclusive production of hyperon-antihyperon pairs close to their production threshold in antiproton - nucleus collisions offers a unique and hitherto unexplored opportunity to elucidate the behaviour of antihyperons in nuclei. For the first time we analyse these reactions in a microscopic transport model using the the Gießen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model. The calculation take the delicate interplay between the strong absorption of antihyperons, their rescattering and refraction at the nuclear surface as well as the Fermi motion of the struck nucleon into account. We find a su…
We investigate the in-medium properties of hyperons and anti-hyperons in the framework of the Non-Linear Derivative (NLD) model. We focus on the momentum dependence of in-medium strangeness optical potentials. The NLD model is based on the simplicity of the well-established Relativistic Mean-Field (RMF) approximation, but it incorporates an explicit momentum dependence on a field-theoretical level. The extension of the NLD model to the (anti)baryon-octet is formulated in the spirit of SU(6) and G-parity arguments. It is shown that with an appropriate choice of momentum cut-offs the $Λ$, $Σ$ an…
The three electromagnetic form factors for the transition from a 3/2+ Sigma* hyperon to the ground-state Lambda hyperon are studied. At low energies, combinations of the transition form factors can be deduced from Dalitz decays of the Sigma* hyperon to Lambda plus an electron-positron pair. It is pointed out how more information can be obtained with the help of the self-analyzing weak decay of the Lambda. In particular it is shown that these transition form factors are complex quantities already in this kinematical region. Such measurements are feasible at hyperon factories as for instance the…
We investigate the polarization parameters in low-energy antiproton-proton elastic ($\bar{p}p\rightarrow\bar{p}p$) and charge-exchange ($\bar{p}p\rightarrow\bar{n}n$) scattering. The predictions for unmeasured observables are based on our new energy-dependent partial-wave analysis of all antiproton-proton scattering data below 925 MeV/$c$ antiproton laboratory momentum, which gives an optimal description of the existing database. Sizable and remarkable spin effects are observed, in particular for charge-exchange scattering. These result from the spin dependence of the long- and medium-range on…
A method to extract the polarization of $Ω$ hyperons produced via the strong interaction is presented. Assuming they are spin 3/2 particles, the corresponding spin density matrix can be written in terms of seven non-zero polarization parameters, all retrievable from the angular distribution of the decay products. Moreover by considering the full decay chain $Ω\rightarrow ΛK\rightarrow pπK$ the magnitude of the asymmetry parameters $β_Ω$ and $γ_Ω$ can be obtained. This method, applied here to the specific $Ω$ case, can be generalized to any weakly decaying hyperon and is perfectly suited for th…
In order to study the interactions and structure of various types of matter one typically needs to carry out scattering experiments utilizing many different particles as projectiles. Whereas beams of $e^\pm$, $μ^\pm$, $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, proton, antiproton, and of various heavy ions have been produced and have enabled many scientific breakthroughs, beams of antineutrons, hyperons ($Λ$, $Σ$ and $Ξ$) and their antiparticles are typically not easy to obtain. Here we point out and investigate a new high-quality source of these particles: a super $J/ψ$ factory with capability of accumulating trillion…
Antiproton scattering off $^3\He$ and $^4\He$ targets is considered at beam energies below 300 MeV within the Glauber-Sitenko approach, utilizing the $\bar N N$ amplitudes of the Jülich model as input. A good agreement with available data on differential $\bar p ^4\He$ cross sections and on $\bar p ^3\He$ and $\pbar ^4\He$ reaction cross sections is obtained. Predictions for polarized total $\bar p ^3$He cross sections are presented, calculated within the single-scattering approximation and including Coulomb-nuclear interference effects. The kinetics of the polarization buildup is discussed.
We investigate for the first time the influence of hyperon-nucleon (YN) interaction models on the strangeness dynamics of antiproton- and $Ξ$-nucleus interactions. Of particular interest is the formation of bound multi-strangeness hypermatter in reactions relevant for \panda. The main features of two well-established microscopic approaches for YN-scattering are first discussed and their results are then analysed such that they can be applied in transport-theoretical simulations. The transport calculations for reactions induced by antiproton beams on a primary target including also the secondar…
The system created in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions is known to behave as an almost ideal liquid. In non-central collisions, due to the large orbital momentum, such a system might be the fluid with the highest vorticity ever created under laboratory conditions. Particles emerging from such a highly vorticous fluid are expected to be globally polarized with their spins on average pointing along the system angular momentum. Vorticity-induced polarization is the same for particles and antiparticles, but the intense magnetic field generated in these collisions may lead to the splitting in p…
We report the measurement of the $γp \rightarrow K^{+}Λ$ and $γp \rightarrow K^{+}Σ^{0}$ reactions at SPring-8. The differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries are measured at forward $K^{+}$ production angles using linearly polarized tagged-photon beams in the range of $E_γ=1.5$--3.0 GeV. With increasing photon energy, the cross sections for both $γp \rightarrow K^{+}Λ$ and $γp \rightarrow K^{+}Σ^{0}$ reactions decrease slowly. Distinct narrow structures in the production cross section have not been found at $E_γ=1.5$--3.0 GeV. The forward peaking in the angular distributions of c…
Elastic scattering of antiprotons on deuteron and 3He targets is studied within the Glauber-Sitenko theory. In case of pbar-d scattering, the single- and double pbar-N scattering mechanisms and the full spin dependence of the elementary pbar-N scattering amplitudes are taken into account on the basis of an appropriately modified formalism developed for p-d scattering. Differential cross sections and analyzing powers are calculated for antiproton beam energies between 50 and 300 MeV, using the Nbar-N model of the Juelich group as input. Results for total polarized cross sections are obtained vi…
We update our recent analysis of pbar-d scattering, performed within the Glauber theory including the single- and double pbar-N scattering mechanisms. Specifically, now we consider also Nbar-N amplitudes from a new partial-wave analysis of pbar-p scattering data. Predictions for differential cross sections and the spin observables A_y^d, A_y^pbar, A_xx, A_yy are presented for antiproton beam energies between 50 and 300 MeV. Total polarized cross sections are calculated utilizing the optical theorem. The efficiency of the polarization buildup for antiprotons in a storage ring is investigated.
