We study a sample of 39 massive early-type lens galaxies at redshift z < 0.3 to determine the slope of the average dark-matter density profile in the innermost regions. We keep the strong lensing and stellar population synthesis modeling as simple as possible to measure the galaxy total and luminous masses. By rescaling the values of the Einstein radius and dark-matter projected mass with the values of the luminous effective radius and mass, we combine all the data of the galaxies in the sample. We find that between 0.3 and 0.9 times the value of the effective radius the average logarithmic slope of the dark-matter projected density profile is -1.0 +/- 0.2 (i.e., approximately isothermal) or -0.7 +/- 0.5 (i.e., shallower than isothermal), if, respectively, a constant Chabrier or heavier, Salpeter-like stellar IMF is adopted. These results provide positive evidence of the influence of the baryonic component on the contraction of the galaxy dark-matter halos, compared to the predictions of dark matter-only cosmological simulations, and open a new way to test models of structure formation and evolution within the standard LCDM cosmological scenario.
We study the halo mass function and inner halo structure at high redshifts ($z\geq5$) for a suite of simulations within the structure formation ETHOS framework. Scenarios such as cold dark matter (CDM), thermal warm dark matter (WDM), and dark acoustic oscillations (DAO) of various strengths are contained in ETHOS with just two parameters $h_{\rm peak}$ and $k_{\rm peak}$, the amplitude and scale of the first DAO peak. The Extended Press-Schechter (EPS) formalism with a smooth-$k$ filter is able to predict the cut-off in the halo mass function created by the suppression of small scale power in…
We provide a new constraint on the small-scale density fluctuations, evaluating the diffuse background free-free emission from dark matter halos in the dark ages. If there exists a large amplitude of the matter density fluctuations on small scales, the excess enhances the early formation of dark matter halos. When the virial temperature is sufficiently high, the gas in a halo is heated up and ionized by thermal collision. The heated ionized gas emits photons by the free-free process. We would observe the sum of these photons as the diffuse background free-free emission. Assuming the analytical…
Based upon a metallicity selection, we identify a significant sub-population of the inner halo globular clusters in the Andromeda Galaxy which we name the Dulais Structure. It is distinguished as a co-rotating group of 10-20 globular clusters which appear to be kinematically distinct from, and on average more metal-poor than, the majority of the inner halo population. Intriguingly, the orbital axis of this Dulais Structure is closely aligned with that of the younger accretion event recently identified using a sub-population of globular clusters in the outer halo of Andromeda, and this is stron…
Imprint of primordial non-Gaussianity on dark matter halo profiles
The halo assembly bias, a phenomenon referring to dependencies of the large-scale bias of a dark matter halo other than its mass, is a fundamental property of the standard cosmological model. First discovered in 2005 from the Millennium Run simulation, it has been proven very difficult to be detected observationally, with only a few convincing claims of detection so far. The main obstacle lies in finding an accurate proxy of the halo formation time. In this study, by utilizing a constrained simulation that can faithfully reproduce the observed structures larger than $2\,$Mpc in the local unive…
We explore the boundary of dark matter haloes through their bias and velocity profiles. Using cosmological $N$-body simulations, we show that the bias profile exhibits a ubiquitous trough that can be interpreted as created by halo accretion that depletes material around the boundary. The inner edge of the active depletion region is marked by the location of the maximum mass inflow rate that separates a growing halo from the draining environment. This inner depletion radius can also be interpreted as the radius enclosing a highly complete population of splashback orbits, and matches the optimal…

We present a new model for the formation of stellar halos in dwarf galaxies. We demonstrate that the stars and star clusters that form naturally in the inner regions of dwarfs are expected to migrate from the gas rich, star forming centre to join the stellar spheroid. For dwarf galaxies, this process could be the dominant source of halo stars. The effect is caused by stellar feedback-driven bulk motions of dense gas which, by causing potential fluctuations in the inner regions of the halo, couple to all collisionless components. This effect has been demonstrated to generate cores in otherwise …
