By using experimental measurements of smart grid applications compliant with IEC 61850 in trace-driven WiMAX simulations, we show that the WiMAX MAC protocol efficiency decreases as a function of the number of stations. To avoid this shortcoming, we propose and analyze a novel WiMAX MAC protocol for smart grid applications, which uses lattice correlators to improve the throughput-delay performance significantly. For the considered configurations, the obtained maximum throughput of the proposed MAC protocol outperforms the current WiMAX MAC protocol by up to 41%.

In this paper we are analyzing the impact of mobility on the QoS parameters (Throughput, Average Jitter and Average end to end Delay) of a mobile WiMAX network (IEEE 802.16e) with CBR application.
This paper analyzes the saturation throughput of a cognitive single hop WLAN overlaid on a primary IEEE 802.16e TDD WiMAX network. After the contention among the secondary nodes, the winner node transmits its data packet in the empty slots of downlink subframes of WiMAX. Regarding the OFDMA structure as well as time-scheduled resources in WiMAX, the time duration of opportunities for the secondary network does not follow simple exponential on-off pattern. To model the dynamic behavior of opportunities for secondary nodes as well as contentions to exploit the opportunities, we propose an analyt…

Supporting quality of service (QoS) guarantees for diverse multimedia services are the primary concerns for WiMAX (IEEE 802.16) networks. A scheduling scheme that satisfies QoS requirements has become more important for wireless communications. We propose a downlink scheduling scheme called adaptive priority-based downlink scheduling (APDS) for providing QoS guarantees in IEEE 802.16 networks. APDS comprises two major components: priority assignment and resource allocation. Different service-type connections primarily depend on their QoS requirements to adjust priority assignments and dispatch…
The topic of this paper is the evaluation of QoS parameters in live Pre-Wimax environments. The main contribution is the validation of an analytical delay-jitter behavior model. These models can be used in optimization algorithms in order to provide opportunistic and reliable all-IP networks. It allows understanding the impact of the jitter constraints on the throughput and packet loss in wireless systems. However, we show that the real-time QoS requirements of real-time and interactive services can be avoided to a large degree by controlling only the packet delay-jitter in a fixed and mobile …

While mobile IPTV services are supported through the mobile WiMAX networks, there must need some guaranteed bandwidth for the IPTV services especially if IPTV and non-IPTV services are simultaneously supported by the mobile WiMAX networks. The quality of an IPTV service definitely depends on the allocated bandwidth for that channel. However, due to the high quality IPTV services and to support of huge non-IPTV traffic over mobile WiMAX networks, it is not possible to guarantee the sufficient amount of the limited mobile WiMAX bandwidth for the mobile IPTV services every time. A Service Level A…
In this work we present a model for analyzing the combined use of broadcast polling and piggybacking in Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) networks. For an accurate analysis of piggybacking, the model focuses on the realistic case of limited up-link bandwidth and non-trivial queueing capability at the subscriber stations. We first model the activity of a subscriber station using a Markov chain and its queue as an M/G/1 system with vacations in order to facilitate the analysis of the piggyback mechanism. We then derive a set of fixed point equations that describe not only t…
In this paper, we propose Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)-aware cross layer scheduling algorithms in a multipoint-to-point network such as the uplink of an IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) network. Inadequate bandwidth allocation to a TCP flow may lead to timeout and since TCP source drops its congestion window ($cwnd$) immediately after a timeout, it may affect the average throughput adversely. On the other hand, since the TCP source increases its $cwnd$ only linearly upon the availability of bandwidth, any excess assignment of bandwidth may remain underutilized. The proposed scheduling algorithms add…

In multi-access wireless networks, transmission scheduling is a key component that determines the efficiency and fairness of wireless spectrum allocation. At one extreme, greedy opportunistic scheduling that allocates airtime to the user with the largest instantaneous channel gain achieves the optimal spectrum efficiency and transmission reliability but the poorest user-level fairness. At the other extreme, fixed TDMA scheduling achieves the fairest airtime allocation but the lowest spectrum efficiency and transmission reliability. To balance the two competing objectives, extensive research ef…

We propose a pure 0-1 formulation for the wireless network design problem, i.e. the problem of configuring a set of transmitters to provide service coverage to a set of receivers. In contrast with classical mixed integer formulations, where power emissions are represented by continuous variables, we consider only a finite set of powers values. This has two major advantages: it better fits the usual practice and eliminates the sources of numerical problems which heavily affect continuous models. A crucial ingredient of our approach is an effective basic formulation for the single knapsack probl…

One of the topics that concerns the way computer networks are designed, is the single-vendor and multi-vendor solutions. Where the performance and operation of your network depends on which model you choose for your enterprise, and the future risks aligned with such models. This study outlines the strengths and average price ranges of multiple vendors in the past 2 years (2018 and 2019), practical cases in which each model works, a case study done by Gartner, and finally, recommendations that can help push the design practices when it comes to network design.

We use select data networks to introduce general concepts and to emphasize new developments. Specifically, we provide a deeper outline…
Base station cooperation (BSC) has recently arisen as a promising way to increase the capacity of a wireless network. Implementing BSC adds a new design dimension to the classical wireless network design problem: how to define the subset of base stations (clusters) that coordinate to serve a user. Though the problem of forming clusters has been extensively discussed from a technical point of view, there is still a lack of effective optimization models for its representation and algorithms for its solution. In this work, we make a further step towards filling such gap: 1) we generalize the clas…
