We study the photoluminescence dynamics of ultra-cold indirect excitons optically created in a double quantum well heterostructure. Above a threshold laser excitation, our experiments reveal the apparition of the so-called inner photoluminescence ring. It is characterized by a ring shaped photoluminescence which suddenly collapses once the laser excitation is terminated. We show that the spectrally resolved dynamics is in agreement with an excitonic origin for the inner-ring which is formed due to a local heating of indirect excitons by the laser excitation. To confirm this interpretation and exclude the ionization of indirect excitons, we evaluate the excitonic density that is extracted from the energy of the photoluminescence emission. It is shown that optically injected carriers play a crucial role in that context as these are trapped in our field-effect device and then vary the electrostatic potential controlling the confinement of indirect excitons. This disruptive effect blurs the estimation of the exciton concentration. However, it suppressed by smoothing the electrostatic environment of the double quantum well by placing the latter behind a super-lattice. In this improved geometry, we then estimate that the exciton density remains one order of magnitude smaller than the critical density for the ionization of indirect excitons (or Mott transition) in the regime where the inner-ring is formed.
We studied multi-exciton dynamics in monolayer WSe2 using nonlinear photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and Monte Carlo simulations. We observed strong nonlinear saturation behavior of exciton PL with increasing excitation power density, and long-distance exciton diffusion reaching several micrometers. We demonstrated that the diffusion-assisted exciton-exciton annihilation model accounts for the observed nonlinear PL behavior. The long-distance exciton diffusion and subsequent efficient exciton-exciton annihilation process determined the unusual multi-exciton dynamics in atomically thin layer…
We propose an unconventional scheme of photoluminescence in a semiconductor thin film, where the nonlocal correlation between an excitonic wave and a light wave prominently enhances the exciton-light coupling beyond the long-wavelength approximation (the so-called excitonic superradiance regime). On the basis of the developed method extending input-output theory, we elucidate atypical photoluminescence effects due to the strong wave-wave correlation. In particular, the up-converted photoluminescence based on the coherent superposition of excitons is found to be highly efficient, i.e., it can b…
The remarkably strong Coulomb interaction in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) results in an extraordinarily rich many-particle physics including the formation of tightly bound excitons. Besides optically accessible bright excitonic states, these materials also exhibit a variety of dark excitons. Since they can even lie below the bright states, they have a strong influence on the exciton dynamics, lifetimes, and photoluminescence. While very recently, the presence of dark excitonic states has been experimentally demonstrated, the origin of these states, their formation, a…
The dynamics of exciton and electron-hole plasma populations is studied via time-resolved photoluminescence after nonresonant excitation. By comparing the peak emission at the exciton resonance with the emission of the continuum, it is possible to experimentally identify regimes where the emission originates predominantly from exciton and/or plasma populations. The results are supported by a microscopic theory which allows one to extract the fraction of bright excitons as a function of time.
We report the first observation of trions (charged excitons), three-particle bound states consisting of one electron and two holes, in hole-doped carbon nanotubes at room temperature. When p-type dopants are added to carbon nanotube solutions, the photoluminescence and absorption peaks of the trions appear far below the E11 bright exciton peak, regardless of the dopant species. The unexpectedly large energy separation between the bright excitons and the trions is attributed to the strong electron-hole exchange interaction in carbon nanotubes.
We study spatial photoluminescence characteristics of neutral and charged excitons across extended monolayer MoS$_2$ synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. Using two-dimensional hyperspectral photoluminescence mapping at cryogenic temperatures we identify regions with increased emission from charged excitons associated with both spin-orbit split valence subbands. Such regions are attributed to unintentional doping at defect sites with excess charge that bind neutral excitons to form defect-pinned trions. Our findings imply comparable timescales for the formation, relaxation, and radiative d…
The oscillation of photoluminescence peak energies is observed in InAs quantum tubes depending on the magnetic flux through the tube. The oscillation is shown to be due to the Aharonov-Bohm effect of a charged exciton in a quantum tube. No quadratic shift in photoluminescence peak energies is observed, which is a characteristic feature of a thin quantum tube with a single channel surrounding the magnetic flux through the tube.
The photoluminescence (PL) of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a high magnetic field is studied as a function of the filling factor and the separation d between the electron layer and the valence hole. Depending on the magnitude of d relative to the magnetic length lambda, two distinct regimes in the response of the 2DEG to the valence hole occur, with different elementary emission processes contributing to the PL spectrum. At d<lambda ("strong coupling" regime), the hole binds one or two electrons to form an exciton (X) or one of three possible charged exciton (X-) states, a spin-sing…
This is a supplementary material to our Comment arXiv:0909.4265 on M. Stern, V. Garmider, E. Segre, M. Rappaport, V. Umansky, Y. Levinson, and I. Bar-Joseph, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 257402 (2008).
The formation and possible decay processes of neutral and charged excitonic complexes in electronic integral and fractional quantum Hall systems are discussed. The excitonic complexes are bound states of a small number of the relevant negatively and positively charged quasiparticles (e.g., conduction electrons and valence holes, reversed-spin electrons and spin holes, Laughlin quasielectrons and quasiholes, composite Fermions) that can occur in a 2D electron in the presence of a strong magnetic field. Examples of such bound states are interband neutral and charged excitons, fractionally charge…
Indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells have long radiative lifetimes and form a cold quasi-two-dimensional population suitable for studying collective quantum effects. Here we report the observation of the exciton Mott transition from an insulating (excitons) to a conducting (ionized electron-hole pairs) phase, which occurs gradually as a function of carrier density and temperature. The transition is inferred from spectral and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements around a carrier density of $2\times10^{10} \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ and temperatures of $12-16 \mathrm{K}$. An externally appl…
We present a magneto-photoluminescence study on neutral and charged excitons confined to InAs/GaAs quantum dots. Our investigation relies on a confocal microscope that allows arbitrary tuning of the angle between the applied magnetic field and the sample growth axis. First, from experiments on neutral excitons and trions, we extract the in-plane and on-axis components of the Landé tensor for electrons and holes in the s-shell. Then, based on the doubly negatively charged exciton magneto-photoluminescence we show that the p-electron wave function spreads significantly into the GaAs barriers. We…
Tungsten-based monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides host a long-lived dark exciton, an electron-hole pair in a spin-triplet configuration. The long lifetime and unique spin properties of the dark exciton provide exciting opportunities to explore light-matter interactions beyond electric dipole transitions. Here we demonstrate that the coupling of the dark exciton and an optically silent chiral phonon enables the intrinsic photoluminescence of the dark-exciton replica in monolayer WSe2. Gate and magnetic-field dependent PL measurements unveil a circularly-polarized replica peak located be…
We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical studies of photoluminescence of single CdMnTe quantum dots with Mn content x ranging from 0.01 to 0.2. We distinguish three stages of the equilibration of the exciton-Mn ion spin system and show that the intermediate stage, in which the exciton spin is relaxed, while the total equilibrium is not attained, gives rise to a specific asymmetric shape of the photoluminescence spectrum. From an excellent agreement between the measured and calculated spectra we are able to evaluate the exciton localization volume, number of paramagnetic Mn ions,…
Charged magneto-excitons X- in a dilute 2D electron gas in narrow and symmetric quantum wells are studied using exact diagonalization techniques. An excited triplet X- state with a binding energy of about 1 meV is found. This state and the singlet are the two optically active states observed in photoluminescence (PL). The interaction of X-'s with electrons is shown to have short range, which effectively isolates bound X- states from a dilute e-h plasma. This results in the insensitivity of PL to the filling factor nu. For the "dark" triplet X- ground state, the oscillator strength decreases ex…
The exciton spin dynamics and polarization properties of the related emission are investigated in colloidal CdSe/CdS dot-in-rod (DiR) and spherical core/shell nanocrystal (NC) ensembles by magneto-optical photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to 15 T. It is shown that the degree of circular polarization (DCP) of the exciton emission induced by the magnetic field is affected by the NC geometry as well as the exciton fine structure and can provide information on nanorod orientation. A theory to describe the circular and linear polarization properties of the NC emission in mag…
The photoluminescence spectra of spherical CdTe nanocrystals with zincblende structure are studied by size-selective spectroscopic techniques. We observe a resonant Stokes shift of 15 meV when the excitation laser energy is tuned to the red side of the absorption band at 2.236 eV. The experimental data are analyzed within a symmetry-based tight-binding theory of the exciton spectrum, which is first shown to account for the size dependence of the fundamental gap reported previously in the literature. The theoretical Stokes shift presented as a function of the gap shows a good agreement with the…
Taking into account the tetrahedral shape of a quantum dot quantum well (QDQW) when describing excitonic states, phonon modes and the exciton-phonon interaction in the structure, we obtain within a non-adiabatic approach a quantitative interpretation of the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of a single CdS/HgS/CdS QDQW. We find that the exciton ground state in a tetrahedral QDQW is bright, in contrast to the dark ground state for a spherical QDQW.
Using resonant 2-photon excitation of interlayer electrons in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG), we resolve photoluminescence (PL) that tunes spectrally with stacking angle, θ. This weak signal is 4- 5$\times$ larger than the non-resonant background and is emitted from the interlayer band anti-crossing regions traditionally associated with van Hove singularity resonances. However, our observation of resonant PL emission with delayed ~1 ps electronic thermalization suggests interlayer carriers may instead form bound-excitons. Using both the 2-photon PL and intraband transient absorption spectra, …
We studied the excitation density dependence of photoluminescence (PL) spectra of excitons and trions (charged excitons) in hole-doped single-walled carbon nanotubes. We found that the PL intensity of trions exhibited a strong nonlinear saturation behavior as the excitation density increased, whereas that of excitons exhibited a weak sublinear behavior. The strong PL saturation of trions is attributed to depletion of doped holes that are captured by excitons in the formation processes. Moreover, the effective radiative lifetime of a trion was evaluated to be approximately 20 ns.
The fine structure of the exciton spectrum, containing optically allowed (bright) and forbidden (dark) exciton states, determines the radiation efficiency in nanostructures. We study time-resolved micro-photoluminescence in MoS$_2$ monolayers and bilayers, both unstrained and compressively strained, in a wide temperature range (10-300 K) to distinguish between exciton states optically allowed and forbidden, both in spin and momentum, as well as to estimate their characteristic decay times and contributions to the total radiation intensity. The decay times were found to either increase or decre…
We study photoluminescence (PL) of charged excitons ($X^-$) in narrow asymmetric quantum wells in high magnetic fields B. The binding of all $X^-$ states strongly depends on the separation $δ$ of electron and hole layers. The most sensitive is the ``bright'' singlet, whose binding energy decreases quickly with increasing $δ$ even at relatively small B. As a result, the value of B at which the singlet--triplet crossing occurs in the $X^-$ spectrum also depends on $δ$ and decreases from 35 T in a symmetric 10 nm GaAs well to 16 T for $δ=0.5$ nm. Since the critical values of $δ$ at which differen…
The origin of the variation of photoluminescence (PL) spectra of monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS2) is investigated systematically. Dependence of the PL spectrum on the excitation power show that the relatively sharp component corresponds to excitons whereas the broader component at slightly lower energy corresponds to negatively charged trions. PL imaging and second harmonic generation measurements show that the trion signals are suppressed more than the exciton signals near the edges, thereby relatively enhancing the excitonic feature in the PL spectrum and that such relative enhancement of …
Strong increase in the intensity of the peaks of excited magneto-exciton (ME) states in the photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra recorded for the ground heavy-hole magneto-excitons (of the 1sHH type) has been found in a GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice in strong magnetic field B applied normal to the sample layers. While varying B the intensities of the PLE peaks have been measured as functions of energy separation $ΔE$ between excited ME peaks and the ground state of the system. The resonance profiles have been found to have maxima at $ΔE_{\rm max}$ close to the energy of the GaAs LO-phonon. Ho…
We propose the application of nonlinear optics for studies of spatially indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells. We demonstrate, that despite their vanishing oscillator strength, indirect excitons can strongly contribute to the photoinduced reflectivity and Kerr rotation. This phenomenon is governed by the interaction between direct and indirect excitons. Both dark and bright states of indirect excitons can be probed by these nonlinear optical techniques.
The exciton system in double quantum well is considered under condition when the ground state is the spatially indirect exciton. At high pumping growth of the exciton concentration can lead to so significant increase of the indirect exciton energy that becomes equal to the direct exciton energy. Then further increase of pumping leads to formation of mixed direct - indirect exciton phase. A rough estimate of the exciton energy in the mixed phase explains puzzling features of some recent exciton measurements. An experiment that would reveal main characteristic features of the mixed phase is sugg…
At cryogenic temperatures, the photoluminescence spectrum of monolayer WSe2features a num-ber of lines related to the recombination of so-called localized excitons. The intensity of these lines strongly decreases with increasing temperature. In order to understand the mechanism behind this phenomenon, we carried out a time-resolved experiment, which revealed a similar trend in the photoluminescence decay time. Our results identify the opening of additional nonradiative relaxation channels as a primary cause of the observed temperature quenching of the localized excitons' photoluminescence.
We report a photoluminescence (PL) and transient reflection spectroscopy study of exciton dynamics in monolayer transition transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). PL saturation in monolayer MoSe2 occurs an excitation intensity more than two orders of magnitude lower than in monolayer MoS2. Transient reflection shows that the nonlinear exciton-exciton annihilation is the dominant exciton decay process in monolayer MoSe2 in contrast to the previously reported linear exciton decay in monolayer MoS2. In addition, the exciton lifetime in MoSe2, > 125 ps, is more than an order of magnitude longer t…
Spin transport of indirect excitons in GaAs/AlGaAs coupled quantum wells was observed by measuring the spatially resolved circular polarization of exciton emission. Exciton spin transport over several microns originates from a long spin relaxation time and long lifetime of indirect excitons.
The exciton decay rate at a rough interface in type-II semiconductor superlattices is investigated. It is shown that the possibility of recombination of indirect excitons at a plane interface essentially affects kinetics of the exciton photoluminescence at a rough interface. This happens because of strong correlation between the exciton recombination at the plane interface and at the roughness. Expressions that relate the parameters of the luminescence kinetics with statistical characteristics of the rough interface are obtained. The mean height and length of roughnesses in GaAs/AlAs superlatt…
Spin transport of indirect excitons in GaAs/AlGaAs coupled quantum wells was observed by measuring the spatially resolved circular polarization of the exciton emission. The exciton spin transport originates from the long spin relaxation time and long lifetime of the indirect excitons.
Quasi-equilibrium relaxational thermodynamics is developed to understand LA-phonon-assisted thermalization of Bose-Einstein distributed excitons in quantum wells. We study the quantum-statistical effects in the relaxational dynamics of the effective temperature of excitons $T = T(t)$. When $T$ is less than the degeneracy temperature $T_0$, well-developed Bose-Einstein statistics of quantum well excitons leads to nonexponential and density-dependent thermalization. At low bath temperatures $T_b \to 0$ the thermalization of quantum-statistically degenerate excitons effectively slows down and $T(…
Wide quantum dots were fabricated from multiple quantum well structures based on Zn_{1-x}Mn_xTe/ZnTe (x = 0.076) dilute magnetic semiconductors and were investigated via photoluminescence (PL) in a magnetic field. Calculations taking into account the strain in the two types of structure enabled the PL transitions to be identified and show that the dominant emission in the MQWs is from heavy-hole (hh) excitons whereas in the quantum dots, the removal of the strain in the barrier layers generates a large biaxial tensile strain in the quantum wells which shifts the light-hole (lh) exciton to lowe…
We have studied emission properties of high-density excitons in single-walled carbon nanotubes through nonlinear photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. As the excitation intensity was increased, all emission peaks arising from different chiralities showed clear saturation in intensity. Each peak exhibited a saturation value that was independent of the excitation wavelength, indicating that there is an upper limit on the exciton density for each nanotube species. We developed a theoretical model based on exciton diffusion and exciton-exciton annihilation that successfully reproduced the sat…
We examine the photoluminescence of highly-excited exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavities. Under strong pumping, exciton-polariton condensates have been observed to undergo a lasing transition where strong coupling between the excitons and photons is lost. We discuss an alternative high-density scenario, where the strong coupling is maintained. We find that the photoluminescence smoothly transitions between the lower polariton energy to the cavity photon energy. An intuitive understanding of the change in spectral characteristics is given, as well as differences to the ph…
We investigate valley exciton dynamics in MoSe2 monolayers in polarization- and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy at 4K. Following circularly polarized laser excitation, we record a low circular polarization degree of the PL of typically $\leq5\%$. This is about 10 times lower than the polarization induced under comparable conditions in MoS2 and WSe2 monolayers. The evolution of the exciton polarization as a function of excitation laser energy and power is monitored in PL excitation (PLE) experiments. Fast PL emission times are recorded for both the neutral exciton of $\leq3$ p…
We propose an optoelectronic scheme to define and manipulate an indirect neutral exciton qubit within a quantum dot molecule. We demonstrate coherent dynamics of indirect excitons resilient against decoherence effects, including direct exciton spontaneous recombination. For molecules with large interdot separation, the exciton dressed spectrum yields an often overlooked avoided crossing between spatially indirect exciton states. Effective two level system Hamiltonians are extracted by Feshbach projection over the multilevel exciton configurations. An adiabatic manipulation of the qubit states …
We study the theory of intrinsic photoluminescence of two-dimensional electron systems in the vicinity of the $ν=1$ quantum Hall state. We focus predominantly on the recombination of a band of initial ``excitonic states'' that are the low-lying energy states of our model at $ν=1$. It is shown that the recombination of excitonic states can account for recent observations of the polarization-resolved spectra of a high-mobility GaAs quantum well. The asymmetric broadening of the spectral line in the $σ_-$ polarization is explained to be the result of the ``shake-up'' of spin-waves upon radiative …
We show that new low-energy photoluminescence (PL) bands can be created in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes by intense pulsed excitation. The new bands are attributed to PL from different nominally dark excitons that are "brightened" due to defect-induced mixing of states with different parity and/or spin. Time-resolved PL studies on single nanotubes reveal a significant reduction of the bright exciton lifetime upon brightening of the dark excitons. The lowest energy dark state has longer lifetimes and is not in thermal equilibrium with the bright state.
We realized a potential energy gradient - a ramp - for indirect excitons using a shaped electrode at constant voltage. We studied transport of indirect excitons along the ramp and observed that the exciton transport distance increases with increasing density and temperature.
Taking into account the tetrahedral shape of a quantum dot quantum well (QDQW) when describing excitonic states, phonon modes and the exciton-phonon interaction in the structure, we obtain within a non-adiabatic approach a quantitative interpretation of the photoluminescence spectrum of a single CdS/HgS/CdS QDQW. We find that the exciton ground state in a tetrahedral QDQW is bright, in contrast to the dark ground state for a spherical QDQW. The position of the phonon peaks in the photoluminescence spectrum is attributed to interface optical phonons. We also show that the experimental value of …
The spin dynamics of positively (X$^{+}$) and negatively (X$^{-}$) charged excitons in InP/In$_{0.48}$Ga$_{0.52}$P quantum dots subject to a magnetic field is studied. We find that a characteristic feature of the system under study is the presence of nuclear quadrupole interaction, which leads to stabilization of the nuclear and electron spins in a quantum dot in zero external magnetic field. In detail, the nuclear quadrupole interaction leads to pinning of the Overhauser field along the quadrupole axis, which is close to the growth axis of the heterostructure. The nuclear effects are observed…
The spectral and spatiotemporal dynamics of photoluminescence in monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenide WSe$_2$ obtained by mechanical exfoliation on a Si/SiO$_2$ substrate is studied over a wide range of temperatures and excitation powers. It is shown that the dynamics is nonexponential and, for times $t$ exceeding $\sim$50 ps after the excitation pulse, is described by a dependence of the form $1/(t+t_0)$. Photoluminescence decay is accelerated with a decrease in temperature, as well as with a decrease in the energy of emitting states. It is shown that the observed dynamics cannot be …
The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) shows a multitude of emission peaks below the bright exciton line and not all of them have been explained yet. Here, we study the emission traces of phonon-assisted recombinations of momentum-dark excitons. To this end, we develop a microscopic theory describing simultaneous exciton, phonon and photon interaction and including consistent many-particle dephasing. We explain the drastically different PL below the bright exciton in tungsten- and molybdenum-based materials as result of different configurations of bright…
We study the dynamics of the spin system that consist of a positively charged II-VI semiconductor quantum dot doped with a single Cr$^+$ ion. The resonant photoluminescence (PL) of the positively charged exciton coupled with the Cr$^+$ spin is used to analyze the main spin relaxation channels. The intensity of the resonant PL is reduced by an optical pumping of the spin of the resident hole-Cr$^+$ complex that can be seen as a nano-magnet. The spin memory can be partially erased by a non-resonant optical excitation. This leads to an increase of the resonant PL signal. The resonant PL is co-cir…
We present spatially- and spectrally-resolved photoluminescence measurements of indirect excitons in high magnetic fields. Long indirect exciton lifetimes give the opportunity to measure magnetoexciton transport by optical imaging. Indirect excitons formed from electrons and holes at zeroth Landau levels (0e - 0h indirect magnetoexcitons) travel over large distances and form a ring emission pattern around the excitation spot. In contrast, the spatial profiles of 1e - 1h and 2e - 2h indirect magnetoexciton emission closely follow the laser excitation profile. The 0e - 0h indirect magnetoexciton…
We have theoretically studied exciton states and photoluminescence spectra of strained wurtzite AlGaN/GaN quantum-well heterostructures. The electron and hole energy spectra are obtained by numerically solving the Schrödinger equation, both for a single-band Hamiltonian and for a non-symmetrical 6-band Hamiltonian. The deformation potential and spin-orbit interaction are taken into account. For increasing built-in field, generated by the piezoelectric polarization and by the spontaneous polarization, the energy of size quantization rises and the number of size quantized electron and hole level…
Photoluminescence spectroscopy measurements are performed on suspended carbon nanotubes in a field-effect configuration, and the gate voltage dependence of photoluminescence spectra are compared for the pristine and the molecularly adsorbed states of the nanotubes. We quantify the molecular screening effect on the trion binding energies by determining the energy separation between the bright exciton and the trion emission energies for the two states. The voltage dependence shows narrower voltage regions of constant photoluminescence intensity for the adsorbed states, consistent with a reductio…
We report on spatially- and time-resolved emission measurements and observation of transport of indirect excitons in ZnO/MgZnO wide single quantum wells.
Spatially indirect excitons with displaced wavefunctions of electrons and holes play a pivotal role in a large portfolio of fascinating physical phenomena and emerging optoelectronic applications, such as valleytronics, exciton spin Hall effect, excitonic integrated circuit and high-temperature superfluidity. Here, we uncover three types of spatially indirect excitons (including their phonon replicas) and their quantum-confined Stark effects in hexagonal boron nitride encapsulated bilayer WSe2, by performing electric field-tunable photoluminescence measurements. Because of different out-of-pla…
We investigate the optical properties of InAs quantum dots grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs(110) using Bi as a surfactant. The quantum dots are synthesized on planar GaAs(110) substrates as well as on the {110} sidewall facets of GaAs nanowires. At 10 K, neutral excitons confined in these quantum dots give rise to photoluminescence lines between 1.1 and 1.4 eV. Magneto-photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals that for small quantum dots emitting between 1.3 and 1.4 eV, the electron-hole coherence length in and perpendicular to the (110) plane is on the order of 5 and 2 nm, respectively. T…
We report on the kinetics of a low-temperature gas of indirect excitons in the optically-induced exciton trap. The excitons in the region of laser excitation are found to rapidly -- within 4 ns -- cool to the lattice temperature T = 1.4 K, while the excitons at the trap center are found to be cold -- essentially at the lattice temperature -- even during the excitation pulse. The loading time of excitons to the trap center is found to be about 40 ns, longer than the cooling time yet shorter than the lifetime of the indirect excitons. The observed time hierarchy is favorable for creating a dense…
We report on the principle and realization of an excitonic device: a ramp that directs the transport of indirect excitons down a potential energy gradient created by a perforated electrode at constant voltage. The device provides an experimental proof of principle for controlling exciton transport with electrode density gradients. We observed that the exciton transport distance along the ramp increases with increasing exciton density. This effect is explained in terms of disorder screening by repulsive exciton-exciton interactions.
Monolayer WSe$_2$ hosts a series of exciton Rydberg states denoted by the principal quantum number n = 1, 2, 3, etc. While most research focuses on their absorption properties, their optical emission is also important but much less studied. Here we measure the photoluminescence from the 1s - 5s exciton Rydberg states in ultraclean monolayer WSe$_2$ encapsulated by boron nitride under magnetic fields from -31 T to 31 T. The exciton Rydberg states exhibit similar Zeeman shifts but distinct diamagnetic shifts from each other. From their luminescence spectra, Zeeman and diamagnetic shifts, we dedu…
