We utilize an event-by-event relativistic hydrodynamic calculation performed at a number of different incident beam energies to investigate the creation of hot and dense QCD matter near the critical point. Using state-of-the-art analysis and visualization tools we demonstrate that each collision event probes QCD matter characterized by a wide range of temperatures and baryo-chemical potentials, making a dynamical response of the system to the vicinity of the critical point very difficult to isolate above the background.
We argue that by measuring higher moments of the net proton number fluctuations in heavy ion collisions (HIC) one can probe the QCD chiral cross over transition experimentally. We discuss the properties of fluctuations of the net baryon number in the vicinity of the chiral crossover transition within the Polyakov loop extended quark-meson model at finite temperature and baryon density. The calculation includes non-perturbative dynamics implemented within the functional renormalization group approach. We find a clear signal for the chiral crossover transition in the fluctuations of the net bary…
I review the current status of lattice Monte-Carlo computations of the equation of state of QCD, our current understanding of the thermalization process at collider energies, and two new theoretical developments, one pertaining to the ab-initio calculation of the low-$x$ gluon structure of heavy nuclei, the other to the chaotic behavior of QCD. At the end I give a brief overview of the status of various quark-gluon plasma signatures.
The relevance of higher order cumulants of conserved charges for the analysis of freeze-out and critical conditions in heavy ion collisions at LHC and RHIC is discussed. Using properties of $O(4)$ scaling functions, the generic structure of these higher cumulants at vanishing baryon chemical potential is discussed. Chiral model calculations are then used to study their properties at non-zero baryon chemical potential. It is argued that the rapid variation of sixth and higher order cumulants at the phase boundary may be used to explore the QCD phase diagram in experiment. Moreover, results for …
Dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions at various energies is studied using coarse-grained transport simulations. Microscopic output from the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model is hereby put on a grid of space-time cells which allows to extract the local temperature and chemical potential in each cell via an equation of state. The dilepton emission is then calculated applying in-medium spectral functions from hadronic many-body theory and partonic production rates based on lattice calculations. The comparison of the resulting spectra with experimental data shows t…
The QCD phenomenology of prompt photon production from e-p to p-p/p-pbar and A-A collisions is reviewed. The use of prompt photons as a probe of (i) parton distribution functions (in a proton or in nuclei) as well as (ii) fragmentation functions (into photons and hadrons) and their medium-modifications is highlighted.
We propose a new kind of two-particle correlation of identified hadrons in longitudinal rapidity space, called $G_{αβ}(y_α,y_β)$, which can reflect clearly the charge correlations of hot quark system produced in AA collisions at LHC energies. It is derived from the basic scenario of quark combination mechanism of hadron production. Like the elliptic flow of identified hadrons at intermediate transverse momentum, this correlation is independent of the absolute hadronic yields but dependent only on the flavor compositions of hadrons, and thus exhibits interesting properties for different kinds o…
Using 3+1D viscous relativistic fluid dynamics, we show that electromagnetic probes are sensitive to the initial conditions and to the out-of-equilibrium features of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Within the same approach, we find that hadronic observables show a much lesser sensitivity to these aspects. We conclude that electromagnetic observables allow access to dynamical regions that are beyond the reach of soft hadronic probes.
We study the charmonium suppression in different evolutions of quark gluon plasma (QGP) based on the transport model. In the colliding energies of Large Hadron Collider, charmonium final yields are dominated by the recombination of charm and anti-charm quarks in the deconfined phase. Heavy quark diffusions depend less on the shear viscosity of the bulk medium, which makes the J/psi nuclear modification factor in the entire pT bin shows weak dependence on the shear viscosity of QGP. However, charmonium with high transverse momentum pT, can only be produced in the early stage of nuclear collisio…
We generalize a previously known class of exact analytic solutions of relativistic perfect fluid hydrodynamics for the first time to arbitrary temperature-dependent Equation of State. We investigate special cases of this class of solutions, in particular, we present hydrodynamical solutions with the Equation of State determined from lattice QCD calculations. We discuss the phenomenological relevance of these solutions as well.
We review applicability of QCD factorization theorem to multiple scattering in deeply inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering. We show why A^{1/3}-type nuclear enhancement can be calculated consistently in perturbative QCD. We derive the transverse momentum broadening of the leading pions in deeply inelastic lepton-nucleus collisions. We argue that the measurement of such transverse momentum broadening can provide direct information on the multiple-parton correlation functions inside a nucleus. We also estimate the numerical values of the broadening at different values of x_B and Q^2.
It is argued that, in heavy ion collisions, thermal dileptons are good probes of the transport properties of the medium created in such events, and also of its early-time dynamics, usually inaccessible to hadronic observables. In this work we show that electromagnetic azimuthal momentum anisotropies do not only display a sensitivity to the shear relaxation time and to the initial shear-stress tensor profile, but also to the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity coefficient.
The effect of finite size of hadrons on the QCD phase diagram is analyzed using relativistic mean field model for the hadronic phase and the Bag model for the QGP phase. The corrections to the EOS for hadronic phase are incorporated in a thermodynamic consistent manner for Van der Waals like interaction. It is found that the effect of finite size of baryons is to shift CEP to higher chemical potential values.
The idea that the nuclear matter may posses long range topological order is supported by the theory and the lattice calculations. At high temperature this order is instrumental in producing anomalous phenomena such as the Chiral Magnetic Effect. In the cold nuclear matter it affects the gluon distribution in the nuclear wave function at low $x$. The effect of the topological order is encapsulated in the unintegrated gluon distribution functions which are proportional, at the leading order, to the square of the gluon propagator at finite topological charge density. It is argued that the Electro…
Relativistic heavy ion collisions provide the possibility to study the topological charge in QCD matter through the event-by-event fluctuating net axial charge or nonequal numbers of left- and right-handed quarks they generate in the produced quark-gluon plasma. Based on the chiral kinetic approach for nearly massless quarks and antiquarks in the strong vorticity field produced along the normal direction of the reaction plane of non-central heavy ion collisions, we show that a unique signal for the topological charge in QCD matter can be identified from the asymmetric distribution of particles…
It has been shown that the evolution of collectivity in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collision is manifested in the variation of various HBT radii with invariant mass ($M$) extracted from the correlation functions of two lepton pairs. The value of the radial velocity ($v_r$) can be estimated from the ratio of the $p_T$ distributions of single photons to lepton pairs for various $M$ windows. It has been argued that the variation of radial flow with appropriate kinematic variables can be used as an indicator of a phase transition from initially produced partons to hadrons. We also consider the e…
We present the first lattice-QCD calculation of the unpolarized strange and charm parton distribution functions using large-momentum effective theory (LaMET). We use a lattice ensemble with 2+1+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) generated by MILC collaboration, with lattice spacing $a\approx 0.12$ fm and $M_π\approx 310$ MeV, and clover valence fermions with two valence pion masses: 310 and 690 MeV. We use momentum-smeared sources to improve the signal up to nucleon boost momentum $P_z=2.18$ GeV, and determine nonperturbative renormalization factors in RI/MOM scheme. We compa…
Thermal photon production at mid-rapidity in Au+Au reactions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV is studied in the framework of a 2D+1 hydrodynamical model that describes efficiently the bulk identified hadron spectra at RHIC. The combined thermal plus NLO pQCD photon spectrum is in good agreement with the yields measured by the PHENIX experiment for all Au+Au centralities. Within our model, we demonstrate that the correlation of the thermal photon slopes with the charged hadron multiplicity in each centrality bin provides direct empirical information on the underlying degrees of freedom and on the e…
We discuss recent data on particle production with emphasis on the degree of thermal and chemical equilibration achieved. The data are interpreted in terms of a resonance gas model. The phase boundary constructed between the resonance gas and the quark-gluon plasma is shown to be very close to the deduced parameters characterizing the hadronic fireball at freeze-out.
We argue that the collinear factorization of the fragmentation functions in high energy nuclear collisions breaks down at transverse momenta $p_T \lesssim Q_s/g$ due to high parton densities in the colliding hadrons and/or nuclei. We find that gluon recombination dominates in that $p_T$ region. We calculate the inclusive cross-section for $π$ meson and nucleon production using the low energy theorems for the scale anomaly in QCD, and compare our quantitative baryon-to-meson ratio to the RHIC data.
The Beam Energy Scan program has been undertaken at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to search for the QCD critical point. The presence of the critical point is expected to lead to non-monotonic behavior of several quantities. Here we report the result of higher moments of net-charge distributions for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 39 GeV as measured by the STAR experiment. The STAR results are compared with results from HIJING event generator and Hadron Resonance (HRG) Models.
We summarize our current understanding of the connection between the QCD phase line and the chemical freeze-out curve as deduced from thermal analyses of yields of particles produced in central collisions between relativistic nuclei.
The momentum correlation functions of baryon pairs, which reflects the baryon-baryon interaction at low energies, are investigated for multi-strangeness pairs ($ΩΩ$ and $NΩ$) produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We calculate the correlation functions based on an expanding source model constrained by single-particle distributions. The interaction potentials are taken from those obtained from recent lattice QCD calculations at nearly physical quark masses. Experimental measurements of these correlation functions for different system sizes will help to disentangle the strong interaction…
In these proceedings, we present the three proposed observables to probe the neutron skin and symmetry energy with relativistic isobar collisions, namely, the isobar ratios of the produced hadron multiplicities ($N_{\rm ch}$), the mean transverse momenta ($\langle p_{\perp} \rangle$), and the net charge multiplicities ($ΔQ$). Our findings suggest potentially significant improvement to neutron skin and symmetry energy determination over traditional low energy methods.
We investigate modifications of hadron masses at finite quark chemical potential in two-flavor and two-color QCD, of which the data are available from lattice simulations, within a linear sigma model based on approximate Pauli-Gursey $SU(4)$ symmetry. The model describes not only ground-state scalar diquarks and pseudo-scalar mesons but also the excited pseudo-scalar diquarks and scalar mesons; each ground-state diquark (meson) has the corresponding excited diquark (hadron) with opposite parity as a chiral partner. Effects of chiral symmetry breaking and diquark condensates are incorporated by…
In this contributions we discuss the novel version of hadron resonance gas model which is based on the induced surface tension concept. Also we present new arguments in favor of a hypothesis that the chiral symmetry restoration transition in central nuclear collisions may occur at the center of mass energies 4.3-4.9 GeV and that the deconfinement phase transition may occur at the center of mass energies 8.8-9.2 GeV. These arguments are based on the unique thermostatic properties of the mixed phase and the ones of an exponential mass spectrum of hadrons.
We report the results of our theoretical studies of the time-reversal and parity violating electric dipole moment (EDM) of $^{129}$Xe arising from the nuclear Schiff moment (NSM) and the electron-nucleus tensor-pseudotensor (T-PT) interaction based on the self-consistent and the normal relativistic coupled-cluster methods. The important many-body effects are highlighted and their contributions are explicitly presented. The uncertainties in the calculations of the correlation and relativistic effects are determined by estimating the contributions of the triples excitations, and the Breit intera…
Systems with different interactions could develop the same critical behaviour due to the underlying symmetry and universality. Using this principle of universality, we can embed critical correlations modeled on the 3D Ising model into the simulated data of heavy-ion collisions, hiding weak signals of a few inter-particle correlations within a large particle cloud. Employing a point cloud network with dynamical edge convolution, we are able to identify events with critical fluctuations through supervised learning, and pick out a large fraction of signal particles used for decision-making in eac…
We review the equation of state of QCD matter at finite densities. We discuss the construction of the equation of state with net baryon number, electric charge, and strangeness using the results of lattice QCD simulations and hadron resonance gas models. Its application to the hydrodynamic analyses of relativistic nuclear collisions suggests that the interplay of multiple conserved charges is important in the quantitative understanding of the dense nuclear matter created at lower beam energies. Several different models of the QCD equation of state are discussed for comparison.
We study a chiral relativistic theory of nuclear matter aimed at the desciption of both the binding and saturation properties and the QCD properties, quark condensate and QCD susceptibilities. For this purpose the nucleon scalar response of the quark-meson coupling model is introduced in the linear sigma model. The consequences for the nuclear and the QCD scalar susceptibilities are discussed.
We review the recent development on a systematic deterministic formalism describing dynamics of both bulk and fluctuations in an arbitrary relativistic hydrodynamic flow carrying conserved charges. In particular, we discuss the implementation of such general formalism near the QCD critical point.
We present lattice non-relativistic QCD calculations of bottomonium correlation functions at temperatures $T \simeq 150-350$ MeV. The correlation functions were computed using extended bottomonium operators, and on background gauge-field configurations for 2+1-flavor QCD having physical kaon and nearly-physical pion masses. We analyzed these correlation functions based on simple theoretically-motivated parameterizations of the corresponding spectral functions. The results of our analyses are compatible with significant in-medium thermal broadening of the ground state S- and P-wave bottomonia.
QCD is the theory of strong interactions and non-perturbative methods have been developed to address the confinement property of QCD. Many experimental measurements probe the confining dynamics, and it is well-known that hard scattering processes allow the extraction of non perturbative hadronic matrix elements. To study exclusive hard processes, such as electromagnetic form factors and reactions like gamma* N -> gamma N', gamma* N -> pi N', gamma* gamma -> pi pi, antiproton proton ->gamma* pi in particular kinematics (named as generalized Bjorken regime), one introduces specific non-perturbat…

Heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies probe matter at extreme conditions of temperatures and energy densities. The study of event-by-event fluctuations of experimental observables is crucial to probe the QCD phase transition, locate the critical point, and learn about the associated critical phenomena. At the critical point, all thermodynamic quantities behave anomalously. Fluctuation measurements provide access to thermodynamic response functions. We discuss the methods for obtaining the isothermal compressibility using particle multiplicity fluctuation, and specific heat using fluctu…
Within the framework of pQCD, we systematically study the $W^{\pm}/Z^0$ boson production as a probe of cold nuclear matter effects and nuclear parton distributions in p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC and future colliders. A detailed analysis at partonic level is performed. Moreover, with a semi-microscopic KP model of NPDFs, in which several nuclear effects (e.g. Fermi motion and nuclear binding, the off-shell correction, the nuclear coherent correction, and the nuclear meson correction) are included, we study the vector boson rapidity distribution in p+Pb collisions at the LHC, and a very…
A systematic search for a critical point in the phase diagram of QCD matter is underway at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and is planned at several future facilities. Its existence, if confirmed, and its location will greatly enhance our understanding of QCD. In this note we emphasize several important issues that are often not fully recognized in theoretical interpretations of experimental results relevant to the critical point search. We discuss ways in which our understanding on these issues can be improved.
It is shown that intermittency, a self-similar correlation with respect to the size of the phase space volume, is sensitive to critical density fluctuations of baryon numbers in a system belonging to the three-dimensional (3D) Ising universality class. The relation between intermittency index and relative baryon density fluctuation is obtained. We thus suggest that measuring the intermittency in relativistic heavy-ion collisions could be used as a good probe of density fluctuations associated with the QCD critical phenomena. From recent preliminary results on neutron density fluctuations in ce…
We introduce a novel approach based on elastic and inelastic scattering rates to extract the hyper-surface of the chemical freeze-out from a hadronic transport model in the energy range from E$_\mathrm{lab}=1.23$ AGeV to $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=62.4$ GeV. For this study, the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model combined with a coarse-graining method is employed. The chemical freeze-out distribution is reconstructed from the pions through several decay and re-formation chains involving resonances and taking into account inelastic, pseudo-elastic and string excitation reacti…
Relativistic hydrodynamics for ideal and viscous fluids is discussed as a tool to describe relativistic heavy-ion collisions and to extract transport properties of the quark-gluon plasma from experimentally measured hadron momentum spectra.

The heavy quarkonium spectrum of Two Color QCD (QC$_2$D) at non-zero quark chemical potential $μ$ and temperature $T$ with $μ/T\gg1$ has been calculated in both $S$- and $P$-wave channels using a lattice non-relativistic formulation of QC$_2$D. As $μ$ is varied, the quarkonium spectra reveal three separate regions, corroborating previous findings that there are three distinct physical regimes of QC$_2$D at low temperature and high baryon density: hadronic matter, quark/quarkyonic matter, and deconfined matter. The results are interpreted in terms of the formation of heavy-light $Qq$ states in …
The cranked relativistic Hartree+Bogoliubov theory has been applied for a systematic study of the nuclei around 254No, the heaviest nuclei for which detailed spectroscopic data are available. The deformation, rotational response, pairing correlations, quasi-particle and other properties of these nuclei have been studied with different relativistic mean field (RMF) parametrizations. For the first time, the quasi-particle spectra of odd deformed nuclei have been calculated in a fully self-consistent way within the framework of the RMF theory. The energies of the spherical subshells, from which a…
Dijet, dihadron, hadron-jet angular correlations have been reckoned as important probes of the transverse momentum broadening effects in relativistic nuclear collisions. When a pair of high-energy jets created in hard collisions traverse the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions, they become de-correlated due to the vacuum soft gluon radiation associated with the Sudakov logarithms and the medium-induced transverse momentum broadening. For the first time, we employ the systematical resummation formalism and establish a baseline calculation to describe the dihadron and hadron-jet …
Electromagnetic fission cross sections for the reactions U + (Be, C, Al, Cu, In, Au, U) at E/A = 0.6 and 1.0 GeV are compared to theoretical calculations using recently proposed quantum-mechanical equivalent-photon spectra. In contrast to semi-classical calculations, systematically lower cross sections are obtained that cannot reproduce the experimental results. Furthermore, we point out that the study of electromagnetic fission cross sections or electromagnetic 1-neutron removal cross sections alone cannot provide unambiguous information on the excitation of the double giant dipole resonance.
A novel attempt has been made to probe the QCD phase boundary by using the experimental data for transverse momenta of ϕ mesons produced in nuclear collisions at AGS, SPS and RHIC energies. The data are confronted with simple thermodynamic expectations and lattice QCD results. The experimental data indicate a first-order phase transition, with a mixed phase stretching the energy density between \sim1 and 3.2 GeV/fm3 corresponding to SPS energies.
The determination of the color force in a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is a key objective in the investigation of strong-interaction matter. Open and hidden heavy-flavor observables in heavy-ion collisions (HICs) are believed to provide insights into this problem by comparing calculations of heavy-quark (HQ) and quarkonium transport with pertinent experimental data. In this work, we utilize the $T$-matrix formalism to compute charm-quark transport coefficients for various input potentials previously extracted from simultaneous fits to lattice-QCD data for HQ free energies, quarkonium correlators a…
Based on the extended hadronic transport model of relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the incompressibility of dense hadronic matter created in relativistic Au+Au heavy-ion collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 3$ GeV is studied. By comparing experimental proton directed flow, productions of strange hadrons $ϕ$, $K^{-}$ as well as their ratio $ϕ/K^{-}$, proton high-order cumulants to the model calculations, a large incompressibility of dense hadronic matter is obtained from nucleon observabels while a rather small incompressibility is needed to fit the data of strange hadrons. This may indicate hadron…
We review the basic concepts of perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and relativistic hydrodynamics, and their applications to hadron production in high energy nuclear collisions. We discuss results from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in light of these theoretical approaches. Perturbative QCD and hydrodynamics together explain a large amount of experimental data gathered during the first decade of RHIC running, although some questions remain open. We focus primarily on practical aspects of the calculations, covering basic topics like perturbation theory, initial state nuclear …
