The inclusion of charging and spin-exchange interactions within the Universal Hamiltonian description of quantum dots is challenging as it leads to a non-Abelian action. Here we present an exact analytical solution of the probem, in particular, in the vicinity of the Stoner instabilty. We calculate the tunneling density of states and the spin susceptibility. We demonstrate that near the Stoner instability the spin susceptibility follows a Curie law with an effective spin. The latter depends logarithmically on temperature due to the statistical fluctuations of the single-particle levels. Near the Stoner instability the tunneling density of states exhibits a non-monotonous behavior as function of the tunneling energy, even at temperatures higher than the exchange energy. This is due to ehnanced spin correlations. Our results could be tested in quantum dots made of nearly ferromagnetic materials.
We investigated the electron transport property of the InGaAs/GaAs double quantum dots, the electron g-factors of which are different from each other. We found that in a magnetic field, the resonant tunneling is suppressed even if one of the Zeeman sublevels is aligned. This is because the other misaligned Zeeman sublevels limit the total current. A finite broadening of the misaligned sublevel partially relieves this bottleneck effect, and the maximum current is reached when interdot detuning is half the Zeeman energy difference.
We study a one-dimensional interacting electron gas with the strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting in a quantum well. A bosonization theory is developed for this system. The tunneling current may deviate from a simple power law which is that in an ordinary Luttinger liquid. The microscopic interacting coupling and the spin-orbital parameter may be measured by varying the external magnetic field in the tunneling experiment.
We have studied spin-flip transitions between Zeeman sublevels in GaAs electron quantum dots. Several different mechanisms which originate from spin-orbit coupling are shown to be responsible for such processes. It is shown that spin-lattice relaxation for the electron localized in a quantum dot is much less effective than for the free electron. The spin-flip rates due to several other mechanisms not related to the spin-orbit interaction are also estimated.
We calculate the nonequilibrium differential conductance $G(V)$ through a quantum dot as function of bias voltage $V$ and applied magnetic field $H$. We use a Keldysh conserving approximation for weakly correlated and the scattering states numerical renormalization group for the intermediate and strongly correlated regime out of equilibrium. In the weakly correlated regime, the Zeeman splitting observable in $G(V)$ strongly depends on the asymmetry of the coupling to the two leads, as well as on particle-hole asymmetry of the quantum dot. In contrast, in the strongly correlated regime, where K…
We use electric dipole spin resonance to measure dynamic nuclear polarization in InAs nanowire quantum dots. The resonance shifts in frequency when the system transitions between metastable high and low current states, indicating the presence of nuclear polarization. We propose that the low and the high current states correspond to different total Zeeman energy gradients between the two quantum dots. In the low current state, dynamic nuclear polarization efficiently compensates the Zeeman gradient due to the $g$-factor mismatch, resulting in a suppressed total Zeeman gradient. We present a the…
We derive analitycally a partial diagonalization of the Hamiltonian representing a quantum dot including spin-orbit interaction and Zeeman energy on an equal footing. It is shown that the interplay between these two terms results in a renormalization of the spin-orbit intensity. The relation between this feature and experimental observations on conductance fluctuations is discussed, finding a good agreement between the model predictions and the experimental behavior.
We explore the correlations and entanglements of exact-diagonalized few-electron wave functions in a quantum dot in magnetic fields without the Zeeman splitting. With the increase of the field, the lowest states with different spins gradually form a narrow band and the electronic states undergo a transition from liquids to rotating Wigner molecules which are accompanied by different characters of charge correlations. For both the liquid and crystal states, the spin conditional probability densities show magnetic couplings between the particles which depend on the particle numbers, the total sp…
We consider the hyperfine-mediated transition rate between Zeeman split spin states of the lowest orbital level in a GaAs quantum dot. We separate the hyperfine Hamiltonian into a part which is diagonal in the orbital states and another one which mixes different orbitals. The diagonal part gives rise to an effective (internal) magnetic field which, in addition to an external magnetic field, determines the Zeeman splitting. Spin-flip transitions in the dots are induced by the orbital mixing part accompanied by an emission of a phonon. We evaluate the rate for different regimes of applied magnet…
Shallow acceptor levels in Si/Ge/Si quantum well heterostructures are characterized by resonant tunneling spectroscopy in the presence of high magnetic fields. In a perpendicular magnetic field we observe a linear Zeeman splitting of the acceptor levels. In an in-plane field, on the other hand, the Zeeman splitting is strongly suppressed. This anisotropic Zeeman splitting is shown to be a consequence of the huge light hole-heavy hole splitting caused by a large biaxial strain and a strong quantum confinement in the Ge quantum well.
We study the Zeeman splitting in lateral quantum dots that are defined in GaAs-AlGaAs het- erostructures by means of split gates. We demonstrate a non-linear dependence of the splitting on magnetic field and its substantial variations from dot to dot and from heterostructure to het- erostructure. These phenomena are important in the context of information processing since the tunability and dot-dependence of the Zeeman splitting allow for a selective manipulation of spins. We show that spin-orbit effects related to the GaAs band structure quantitatively explain the ob- served magnitude of the …
We study the transport properties for a Luttinger-liquid (LL) quantum wire in the presence of both Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and a weak external in-plane magnetic field. The bosonized Hamiltonian of the system with an externally applied longitudinal electric field is established. And then the equations of motion for the bosonic phase fields are solved in the Fourier space, with which the both charge and spin conductivities for the system are calculated analytically based on the linear response theory. Generally, the ac conductivity is an oscillation function of the strengths of electron…
We have realized an AlAs two-dimensional electron system in which electrons occupy conduction-band valleys with different Fermi contours and effective masses. In the quantum Hall regime, we observe both resistivity spikes and persistent gaps at crossings between the Landau levels originating from these two valleys. From the positions of the spikes in tilted magnetic field and measurements of the energy gaps away from the crossings, we find that, after occupation of the minority valley, the spin susceptibility drops rapidly, and the electrons possess a {\it single} interaction-enhanced g-factor…
Electron spin filter induced by Zeeman splitting in a few-electron quantum dot coupled to two normal electrodes is studied considering Coulomb blockade effect. Based on the Anderson model and Liouville-von Neumann equation, equation of motion of the system is derived and analytical solutions are achieved. Transport windows for perfectly polarized current, partially polarized current and non-polarized current induced by the Zeeman splitting energy and Coulomb blockade potential are exploited. We will give the relations of voltage, magnetic field and temperature for high quality spin filtering.
We study the effect of an external magnetic field in the Kondo regime of a double-quantum-dot system in which a strongly correlated dot (the "hanging dot") is coupled to a second, noninteracting dot that also bridges the gap between two external leads. In zero field, the spectral function of the hanging dot has previously been shown to exhibit a split-peak structure near the Fermi level due to "Kondo resonance filtering" by the bridging dot. We show using the numerical renormalization group that application of a magnetic field leads to a subtle interplay between electronic interference, Kondo …
We have studied the Zeeman splitting in ballistic hole quantum wires formed in a (311)A quantum well by surface gate confinement. Transport measurements clearly show lifting of the spin degeneracy and crossings of the subbands when an in-plane magnetic field B is applied parallel to the wire. When B is oriented perpendicular to the wire, no spin-splitting is discernible up to B = 8.8 T. The observed large Zeeman splitting anisotropy in our hole quantum wires demonstrates the importance of quantum-confinement for spin-splitting in nanostructures with strong spin-orbit coupling.
Spin-orbit coupling is key to all-electrical control of quantum-dot spin qubits, and is frequently stronger for holes than for electrons. Here we investigate Pauli spin blockade for two heavy holes in a gated double quantum dot in an in-plane magnetic field. The interplay of the complex Zeeman and spin-orbit couplings causes a blockade leakage current anisotropic in the field direction. The period of the anisotropic leakage is critically dependent on the relative magnitude of Zeeman interaction terms linear and cubic in the magnetic field. The current and singlet-triplet exchange splitting can…
Through magneto-transport measurements and analysis of the observed Shubnikov de Haas oscillations in (010) (AlxGa1-x)2O3/Ga2O3 heterostructures, spin-splitting of the Landau levels in the (010) Ga2O3 two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) has been studied. Analysis indicates that the spin-splitting results from the Zeeman effect. By fitting the both the first and second harmonic of the oscillations as a function of magnetic field, we determine the magnitude of the Zeeman splitting to be 0.4$\hbarω_c$, with a corresponding effective g-factor of 2.7, for magnetic field perpendicular to the 2DEG.
We report a study of the quantum Hall states (QHSs) sequence of holes in mono- and bilayer WSe$_2$. The QHSs sequence transitions between predominantly even and predominantly odd filling factors as the hole density is tuned in the range $1.6 - 12\times10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$. The QHSs sequence is insensitive to the transverse electric field, and tilted magnetic field measurements reveal an insensitivity of the QHSs sequence to the in-plane magnetic field, evincing that the hole spin is locked perpendicular to the WSe$_2$ plane. These observations imply that the QHSs sequence is controlled by the Ze…
Semiconductor holes with strong spin-orbit coupling allow all-electrical spin control, with broad applications ranging from spintronics to quantum computation. Using a two-dimensional hole system in a GaAs quantum well, we demonstrate a new mechanism of electrically controlling the Zeeman splitting, which is achieved through altering the hole wave vector $k$. We find a threefold enhancement of the in-plane $g-$factor $g_{\parallel}(k)$. We introduce a new method for quantifying the Zeeman splitting from magnetoresistance measurements, since the conventional tilted field approach fails for two-…
Doping a semiconductor quantum dot with just a single impurity atom can completely transform its physical properties. Here, we report and analyze the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of colloidal CdSe quantum dot samples containing on average fewer than one Mn2+ per quantum dot. Even at this sub-single-dopant level, the low-temperature low-field data are dominated by impurity-induced Zeeman splittings caused by dopant-carrier sp-d exchange. Unlike in more heavily doped quantum dots, however, the MCD intensity at the first CdSe exciton shows a field-induced sign flip as the field stren…
We theoretically investigate the spin-resolved local density of states (SR-LDOS) of a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a Kondo adatom and a STM probe. Using Green function formalism and the atomic approach in the limit of infinite Coulomb correlation, it is found an analytical SR-LDOS expression in the low temperature regime of the system. This formal result is given in terms of phase shifts originated by the adatom scattering and Fano interference. The SR-LDOS is investigated as a function of the probe position and different Fano factors. Our findings provide an …
The ratio of the Zeeman splitting to the cyclotron energy ($M=ΔE_Z / \hbar ω_c$), which characterizes the relative strength of the spin-orbit interaction in crystals, is examined for the narrow gap IV-VI semiconductors PbTe, SnTe, and their alloy Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te on the basis of the multiband $k\cdot p$ theory. The inverse mass $α$, the g-factor $g$, and $M$ are calculated numerically by employing the relativistic empirical tight-binding band calculation. On the other hand, a simple but exact formula of $M$ is obtained for the six-band model based on the group theoretical analysis. It is sho…
The level splittings induced by a horizontal magnetic field in a parabolic two-dimensional quantum dot with spin-orbit interaction are obtained. Characteristic features induced by the spin-orbit coupling are the appearance of zero-field gaps as well as energy splittings that depend on the electronic state and the orientation of the magnetic field in the quantum-dot plane. It is suggested that these quantum-dot properties could be used to determine the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit intensities
The response of semiconductor materials to external magnetic fields is a reliable approach to probe intrinsic electronic and spin-dependent properties. In this study, we investigate the common Zeeman splitting features of novel wurtzite materials, namely InP, InAs, and GaAs. We present values for the effective g-factors of different energy bands and show that spin-orbit coupling effects, responsible for the spin splittings, also have noticeable contributions to the g-factors. Within the Landau level picture, we show that the nonlinear Zeeman splitting recently explained in magneto photolumines…
The strength of the Zeeman splitting induced by an applied magnetic field is an important factor for the realization of spin-resolved transport in mesoscopic devices. We measure the Zeeman splitting for a quantum point contact etched into a Ga0.25In0.75As quantum well, with the field oriented parallel to the transport direction. We observe an enhancement of the Lande g-factor from |g*|=3.8 +/- 0.2 for the third subband to |g*|=5.8 +/- 0.6 for the first subband, six times larger than in GaAs. We report subband spacings in excess of 10 meV, which facilitates quantum transport at higher temperatu…
Magnetic-field-induced phase transitions in the integer quantum Hall effect are studied under the formation of paired Landau bands arising from Zeeman spin splitting. By investigating features of modular symmetry, we showed that modifications to the particle-hole transformation should be considered under the coupling between the paired Landau bands. Our study indicates that such a transformation should be modified either when the Zeeman gap is much smaller than the cyclotron gap, or when these two gaps are comparable.
We describe the far from equilibrium non-local transport in a diffusive superconducting wire with a Zeeman splitting, taking into account the different spin relaxation mechanisms. We demonstrate that due to the Zeeman splitting an injection of a current in a superconducting wire creates a spin accumulation that can only relax via thermalization. In addition the Zeeman splitting also causes a suppression of the spin-orbit and spin-flip scattering rates. These two effects lead to long-range spin and charge accumulations detectable in the non-local signal. Our model explains the main qualitative …
Non-linear Zeeman splitting of neutral excitons is observed in composition engineered In(x)Ga(1-x)As self-assembled quantum dots and its microscopic origin is explained. Eight-band k.p simulations, performed using realistic dot parameters extracted from cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy, reveal that a quadratic contribution to the Zeeman energy originates from a spin dependent mixing of heavy and light hole orbital states in the dot. The dilute In-composition (x<0.35) and large lateral size (40-50 nm) of the quantum dots investigated is shown to strongly enhance the non-linear exci…
Tunnelling density of states (DoS) in Luttinger liquid has a dip at zero energy, commonly known as the zero-bias anomaly (ZBA). In the presence of a magnetic field, in addition to the zero-bias anomaly, the DoS develops two peaks separated from the origin by the Zeeman energy. We find the shape of these peaks at arbitrary strength of the electron-electron interaction. The developed theory is applicable to various kinds of quantum wires, including carbon nanotubes.
We study coherent transport through a semiconductor nanowire in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting due to an applied magnetic field. By employing analytical and numerical techniques we develop a theory for the Josephson effect in the superconductor-semiconductor nanowire-superconductor structure. We show that Josephson current through the clean semiconductor nanowire exhibits a number of interesting features due to the interplay between the Zeeman splitting and spin-orbit coupling. We also study effect how disorder in the nanowire affects Andreev bound-state energy spectr…
We present a theoretical study of gap opening in the zeroth Landau level in gapped graphene as a result of pseudo-Zeeman interaction. The applied magnetic field couples with the valley pseudospin degree of freedom of the charge carriers leading to the pseudo-Zeeman interaction. To investigate its role in transport at the Charge Neutrality Point (CNP), we study the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) in gapped graphene in an angular magnetic field in the presence of pseudo-Zeeman interaction. Analytical expressions are derived for the Hall conductivity using Kubo-Greenwood formula. We also determ…
We study the Zeeman spin-splitting in hole quantum wires oriented along the $[011]$ and $[01\bar{1}]$ crystallographic axes of a high mobility undoped (100)-oriented AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. Our data shows that the spin-splitting can be switched `on' (finite $g^{*}$) or `off' (zero $g^{*}$) by rotating the field from a parallel to a perpendicular orientation with respect to the wire, and the properties of the wire are identical for the two orientations with respect to the crystallographic axes. We also find that the $g$-factor in the parallel orientation decreases as the wire is narrowed. …
We report on a comprehensive study of spin-1/2 Kondo effect in a strongly-coupled quantum dot realized in a high-quality InAs nanowire. The nanowire quantum dot is relatively symmetrically coupled to its two leads, so the Kondo effect reaches the Unitary limit. The measured Kondo conductance demonstrates scaling with temperature, Zeeman magnetic field, and out-of-equilibrium bias. The suppression of the Kondo conductance with magnetic field is much stronger than would be expected based on a g-factor extracted from Zeeman splitting of the Kondo peak. This may be related to strong spin-orbit cou…
We have studied the effect of an in-plane magnetic field B on a one-dimensional hole system in the ballistic regime created by surface gate confinement. We observed clearly the lifting of the spin degeneracy due to the Zeeman effect on the one dimensional subbands for B applied parallel to the channel. In contrast, no Zeeman splitting is detected for B applied perpendicular to the channel, revealing an extreme anisotropy of the effective Lande g-factor g*. We demonstrate that this anisotropy is a direct consequence of the one-dimensional confinement on a system with strong spin-orbit coupling.
The Zeeman splitting of the conduction band in the HgTe quantum wells both with normal and inverted spectrum has been studied experimentally in a wide electron density range. The simultaneous analysis of the SdH oscillations in low magnetic fields at different tilt angles and of the shape of the oscillations in moderate magnetic fields gives a possibility to find the ratio of the Zeeman splitting to the orbital one and anisotropy of g-factor. It is shown that the ratios of the Zeeman splitting to the orbital one are close to each other for both types of structures, with a normal and inverted s…
The coherence of the electron spin in a semiconductor quantum dot is strongly enhanced by mode locking through nuclear focusing, where the synchronization of the electron spin to periodic pulsing is slowly transferred to the nuclear spins of the semiconductor material, mediated by the hyperfine interaction between these. The external magnetic field that drives the Larmor oscillations of the electron spin also subjects the nuclear spins to a Zeeman-like coupling, albeit a much weaker one. For typical magnetic fields used in experiments, the energy scale of the nuclear Zeeman effect is comparabl…
Low-temperature electrical conductance spectroscopy measurements of quantum point contacts implemented in p-type GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures are used to study the Zeeman splitting of 1D subbands for both in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic field orientations. The resulting in-plane g-factors agree qualitatively with those of previous experiments on quantum wires while the quantitative differences can be understood in terms of the enhanced quasi-1D confinement anisotropy. The influence of confinement potential on the anisotropy is discussed and an estimate for the out-of-plane g-factor is obtai…
We analyze the effect of a strong Zeeman field on the spectrum of collective excitations of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. The combination of the Dresselhaus type spin orbit coupling and an external Zeeman field result in the lifting of the valley degeneracy in the valence band of these crystals. We show that this lifting of the valley degeneracy manifests in the appearance of an additional plasmon mode with linear in wavenumber dispersion along with the standard square root in wavenumber mode. Despite this novel mode being subject to the Landau damping, it corresponds to a well d…
We show that the condensation of exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities in an applied magnetic field manifests itself in the quenching of the Zeeman splitting of an elliptically polarized condensate. The circular polarization degree of a localized condensate with a finite number of particles increases as a function of the magnetic field with a step-like behavior. The width of each polarization step is fixed by the polariton-polariton interaction constants and the number of steps is fixed by the number of polaritons in the condensate. The magnetic susceptibility of the condensate dep…
In a recent work Zhang and coworkers (PRB 82, 075111 (2010)) studied the Zeeman splitting of the Kondo resonance for the single impurity Anderson model in a finite magnetic field $B$ with the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. There, it was found that with increasing magnetic field $B$ the position of the Kondo resonance in the total spectral function \textit{does not} approach its position in the spin resolved spectral function. Additionally, the position of the Kondo maximum exceeded the Zeeman energy for $B/ T_K\gtrsim 5-10$, where $T_K$ is the low energy Kondo scale of the model…
The electric-field-induced resonant spin polarization of a two-dimensional hole gas described by Luttinger Hamiltonian with structural inversion asymmetry and Zeeman splitting in a perpendicular magnetic field was studied. The spin polarization arising from splitting between the light and the heavy hole bands shows a resonant peak at a certain magnetic field. Especially, the competition between the Luttinger term and the structural inversion asymmetry leads to a rich resonant peaks structure, and the required magnetic field for the resonance may be effectively reduced by enlarging the effectiv…
We study by exact diagonalization, in the lowest Landau level approximation, the Coulomb interaction problem of N = 4 and N = 6 quantum dot in the limit of zero Zeeman coupling. We find that meron excitations constitute the lowest lying states of the quantum dots. This is based on a mapping between the excitations of the dot and states of the Haldane-Shastry spin chain.
We report on magnetic field dependence of half-integer quantized conductance plateaus (HQPs) in InAs quantum wires. We observed HQPs at zero applied magnetic field in InAs quantum wires fabricated from a high-quality InAs quantum well. The application of in-plane magnetic field causes Zeeman splitting of the HQP features, indicating that the origin of the observed HQP is not spontaneous spin polarization. Additionally we observe that conductance of the split HQPs decreases gradually as the in-plane magnetic field increases. We finally assume electron-electron interaction as a possible mechanis…
We report on nonlocal transport in multiterminal superconductor-ferromagnet structures, which were fabricated by means of e-beam lithography and shadow evaporation techniques. In the presence of a significant Zeeman splitting of the quasiparticle states, we find signatures of spin transport over distances of several μm, exceeding other length scales such as the coherence length, the normal-state spin-diffusion length, and the charge-imbalance length. The relaxation length of the spin signal shows a nearly linear increase with magnetic field, hinting at a freeze-out of relaxation by the Zeeman …
We discuss transport through a lateral quantum dot in the vicinity of a singlet-triplet spin transition in its ground state. Extracting the scattering phase shifts from the numerical renormalization group spectra, we determine the linear conductance at zero temperature as a function of a Zeeman field and the splitting of the singlet and triplet states. We find reduced low-energy transport, and a non-monotonic magnetic field dependence both in the singlet and the triplet regime. For a generic set of dot parameters and no Zeeman splitting, the singlet-triplet transition may be identified with th…
In this study, we observe that the conductance of a quantum point contact on a GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum well depends significantly on the magnetic field perpendicular to the two-dimensional electron gas. In the presence of the magnetic field, the subband edge splitting due to the Zeeman energy reaches 0.09 meV at 0.16 T, thereby suggesting an enhanced g-factor. The estimated g-factor enhancement is 17.5 times that of the bare value. It is considered that a low electron density and high mobility makes it possible to reach a strong many-body interaction regime in which this type of strong enha…
The excitation spectrum of a two-electron quantum dot is investigated by tunneling spectroscopy in conjuction with theoretical calculations. The dot made from a material with negligible Zeeman splitting has a moderate spatial anisotropy leading to a splitting of the two lowest triplet states at zero magnetic field. In addition to the well-known triplet excitation at zero magnetic field, two additional excited states are found at finite magnetic field. The lower one is identified as the second excited singlet state on the basis of an avoided crossing with the first excited singlet state at fini…
Zeeman splitting of quantum-confined states of excitons in InGaAs quantum wells (QWs) is experimentally found to depend strongly on quantization energy. Moreover, it changes sign when the quantization energy increases with a decrease in the QW width. In the 87-nm QW, the sign change is observed for the excited quantum-confined states, which are above the ground state only by a few meV. A two-step approach for the numerical solution of the two-particle Schroedinger equation, taking into account the Coulomb interaction and valence-band coupling, is used for a theoretical justification of the obs…
We develop a theory of spin relaxation in Zeeman-splitted superconducting films at low temperatures. A new mechanism of spin relaxation, specific only for Zeeman-splitted superconductors is proposed. It can explain the extremely high spin relaxation lengths, experimentally observed in Zeeman-splitted superconductors, and their strong growth with the magnetic field. In the framework of this mechanism the observed spin signal is formed by the spin-independent nonequilibrium quasiparticle distribution weighted by the spin-split DOS. We demonstrate that the relaxation length of such a spin signal …
The point contact tunneling conductance between edges of the spin singlet $ν=2/3,\hat{K}=(3/3/0)$ quantum Hall states is studied both in the quasiparticle tunneling picture and in the electron tunneling picture. Due to the interplay of Zeeman splitting and the long range Coulomb interaction between edges of opposite chirality novel spin excitations emerge, and their effect is characterized by anomalous exponents of the charge and spin tunneling conductances in various temperature ranges. Depending on the kinds of scatterings at the point contact and the tunneling mechanism the anomalous intera…
For a two-dimensional (2D) hole system (confined within Ge layers of a multilayered p-Ge/Ge_{1-x}Si_x heterostructure) described by Luttinger Hamiltonian with the g-factor highly anisotropic for orientations of magnetic field perpendicular and parallel to the 2D plane (g_perp >> g_par), reported is an observation of low-temperature transition from metallic (dR/dT > 0) to insulator (dR/dT < 0) behavior of resistivity R(T) induced by a perpendicular magnetic field B. The revealed positive magnetoresistance scales as a function of B/T. We attribute this finding to a suppression of the triplet cha…
We present a study on the lifting of degeneracy of the size-quantized energy levels in an electrostatically defined quantum point contact in bilayer graphene by the application of in-plane magnetic fields. We observe a Zeeman spin splitting of the first three subbands, characterized by effective Landé $g$-factors that are enhanced by confinement and interactions. In the gate-voltage dependence of the conductance, a shoulder-like feature below the lowest subband appears, which we identify as a $0.7$ anomaly stemming from the interaction-induced lifting of the band degeneracy. We employ a phenom…
Strong coupling between light and the fundamental excitations of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) are of foundational importance both to pure physics and to the understanding and development of future photonic nanotechnologies. Here we study the relationship between spin polarization of a 2DEG in a monolayer semiconductor, MoSe$_2$, and light-matter interactions modified by a zero-dimensional optical microcavity. We find robust spin-susceptibility of the 2DEG to simultaneously enhance and suppress trion-polariton formation in opposite photon helicities. This leads to observation of a gian…
The theory for light-hole Zeeman splitting developed in [Physica E 44, 797 (2012)] is compared with experimental data found in literature for GaAs/AlGaAs, InGaAs/InP and CdTe/CdMgTe quantum wells. It is shown that the description of experiments is possible with account for excitonic effects and peculiarities of the hole energy spectrum in a quantum well including complex structure of the valence band and the interface mixing of light and heavy holes. It is demonstrated that the absolute values and the sign of the light-hole $g$-factor are extremely sensitive to the parametrization of the Lutti…
We measure the spin splitting in a magnetic field $B$ of localized states in single-electron transistors using a new method, inelastic spin-flip cotunneling. Because it involves only internal excitations, this technique gives the most precise value of the Zeeman energy $Δ= \ZeemanE$. In the same devices we also measure the splitting with $B$ of the Kondo peak in differential conductance. The Kondo splitting appears only above a threshold field as predicted by theory. However, the magnitude of the Kondo splitting at high fields exceeds $2 \ZeemanE$ in disagreement with theory.
In Zeeman spectra of a GaAs-AlGaAs quantum wire array with superlattice period lp, the zero-field shift is found to increase in steps of (2 pi hbar/ e)lp^{-2} at the cyclotron radius Rc ~lp, lp/2, and lp/3. This shift, caused by spin-Landau orbit coupling and quantized in units of the flux quantum 2 pi hbar /e,is a manifestation of the gauge invariance, and the first observation of the flux quantization in a non-superconducting material. The quantum interference associated with the phase difference in the quantum barrier scattering is also reported.
Charge carriers in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as WSe$_2$, have their spin and valley-pseudospin locked into an optically-addressable index that is proposed as a basis for future information processing. The manipulation of this spin-valley index requires tuning its energy, typically through external magnetic field (B), which is cumbersome. Thus, other efficient routes like all-optical control of spin-valley index are desirable. Here, we show that many-body interactions amongst interlayer excitons in WSe$_2$/MoSe$_2$ heterobilayer induce a steady-state valley Z…
We perform a Hartree-Fock calculation in order to describe the ground state of a vertical double quantum dot in the absence of magnetic fields parallel to the growth direction. Intra- and interdot exchange interactions determine the singlet or triplet character of the system as the tunneling is tuned. At finite Zeeman splittings due to in-plane magnetic fields, we observe the continuous quantum phase transition from ferromagnetic to symmetric phase through a canted antiferromagnetic state. The latter is obtained even at zero Zeeman energy for an odd electron number.
