Within Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory, a semiclassical approximation is used to study quantum oscillations and to determine the Fermi surface area associated with these oscillations in a model of a $π$-striped superconductor, where the d-wave superconducting order parameter oscillates spatially with period 8 and zero average value. This system has a non-zero density of particle-hole states at the Fermi energy, which form Landau-like levels in the presence of a magnetic field, B. The Fermi surface is reconstructed via Andreev-Bragg scattering, and the semiclassical motion is along these Fermi surface sections as well as between them via magnetic breakdown. Within the approximation, oscillations periodic in 1/B are found in both the positions and widths of the lowest Landau levels. The area corresponding to these quantum oscillations for intermediate pairing interaction strength is similar to that reported for experimental measurements in the cuprates. A comparison is made of this theory to data for quantum oscillations in the specific heat measured by Riggs et al.
Condensation of bosons in Bose-Einstein condensates or Cooper pairs in superconductors refers to a macroscopic occupation of a few single- or two-particle states. A condensate is called "fragmented" if not a single, but multiple states are macroscopically occupied. While fragmentation is known to occur in particular Bose-Einstein condensates, we propose that fragmentation naturally takes place in striped superconductors. To this end, we investigate the nature of the superconducting ground state realized in the two-dimensional $t$-$t^\prime$-$J$ model. In the presence of charge density modulati…
Striped superconductors: How the cuprates intertwine spin, charge and superconducting orders
Local and fast structural probes using synchrotron radiation have shown nanoscale striped puddles and nanoscale phase separation in doped perovskites. It is known that the striped phases in doped perovskites are due to competing interactions involving charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom, but while many theoretical models for spin and charge stripes have been proposed we are missing theoretical models describing the complex lattice striped modulations in doped perovskites. In this work we show that two different stripes can be represented as a superposition of a pair of stripes, U(theta_n…
Understanding the electron pairing in hole-doped cuprate superconductors has been a challenge, in particular because the "normal" state from which it evolves is unprecedented. Now, after three and a half decades of research, involving a wide range of experimental characterizations, it is possible to delineate a clear and consistent cuprate story. It starts with doping holes into a charge-transfer insulator, resulting in in-gap states. These states exhibit a pseudogap resulting from the competition between antiferromagnetic superexchange $J$ between nearest-neighbor Cu atoms (a real-space inter…
We investigate theoretically the excitation of Higgs oscillations of the order parameter in superconductors by incoherent short pulses of light with frequency much larger than the superconducting gap. The excitation amplitude of the Higgs mode is controlled by a single parameter which is determined by the total number of quasiparticles excited by the pulse. This fact can be traced back to the universality of the shape of the light-induced quasiparticle cascade at energy below the Debye frequency and above the gap.
In superconductors the Anderson-Higgs mechanism allows for the existence of a collective amplitude (Higgs) mode which can couple to eV-light mainly in a non-linear Raman-like process. The experimental non-equilibrium results on isotropic superconductors have been explained going beyond the BCS theory including the Higgs mode. Furthermore, in anisotropic d-wave superconductors strong interaction effects with other modes are expected. Here we calculate the Raman contribution of the Higgs mode from a new perspective, including many-body Higgs oscillations effects and their consequences in convent…
When magnetic field is applied to metals and semimetals quantum oscillations appear as individual Landau levels cross the Fermi level. Quantum oscillations generally do not occur in superconductors (SC) because magnetic field is either expelled from the sample interior or, if strong enough, drives the material into the normal state. In addition, elementary excitations of a superconductor -- Bogoliubov quasiparticles -- do not carry a well defined electric charge and therefore do not couple in a simple way to the applied magnetic field. We predict here that in Weyl superconductors certain types…
We have studied the electronic structure of electron-doped cuprate superconductors via measurements of high-field Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in thin films. In optimally doped Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ and La$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$, quantum oscillations indicate the presence of a small Fermi surface, demonstrating that electronic reconstruction is a general feature of the electron-doped cuprates, despite the location of the superconducting dome at very different doping levels. Negative high-field magnetoresistance is correlated with an anomalous low-temperature change in scatter…
The Fourier transform of the observed magnetic quantum oscillations (MQO) in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+δ}$ high-temperature superconductors has a prominent low-frequency peak with two smaller neighbouring peaks. The separation and positions of these three peaks are almost independent of doping. This pattern has been explained previously by rather special, exquisitely detailed, Fermi-surface reconstruction. We propose that these MQO have a different origin, and their frequencies are related to the bilayer and inter-bilayer electron hopping rather than directly to the areas of tiny Fermi-surface po…
Studying angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations of cuprate superconductors in a model with antiferromagnetic reconstruction and magnetic breakdown
We report the measurements of de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd. Several pieces of a complex multi-sheet Fermi surface are identified, including a small pocket (frequency 40 T) which is three dimensional and anisotropic. From the temperature dependence of the amplitude of the oscillations, the cyclotron effective mass is ($0.18$ $\pm$ 0.1) $m_e$. Further analysis showed a non-trivial $π$-Berry phase is associated with the 40 T pocket, which strongly supports the presence of topological states in bulk BiPd and may result in topological supercon…
We use the formerly derived explicit analytical expressions for the conductivity of nanostructured superconductors supercooled below the critical temperature in electric field. Computer simulations reveal that the negative differential conductivity region of the current-voltage characteristic leads to excitation of electric oscillations. We simulate a circuit with distributed elements as a first step to obtain gigahertz oscillations. This gives a hint that a hybrid device of nanostructured superconductors will work in terahertz frequencies. If the projected setup is successful, we consider the…
Higgs spectroscopy is a new field in which Higgs modes in nonequilibrium superconductors are analyzed to gain information about the ground state. One experimental setup in which the Higgs mode in s-wave superconductors was observed is periodic driving with THz light, which shows resonances in the third-harmonic generation (THG) signal if twice the driving frequency matches the energy of the Higgs mode. We derive expressions of the driven gap oscillations for arbitrary gap symmetry and calculate the THG response. We demonstrate that the possible Higgs modes for superconductors with non-trivial …
Higgs oscillations in nonequilibrium superconductors provide an unique tool to obtain information about the underlying order parameter. Several properties like the absolute value, existence of multiple gaps and the symmetry of the order parameter can be encoded in the Higgs oscillation spectrum. Studying Higgs oscillations with time-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has the advantage over optical measurements that a momentum-resolved analysis of the condensate dynamic is possible. In this paper, we investigate the time-resolved spectral function measured in ARPES for d…
