We stack WMAP 7-year temperature data around extragalactic point sources, showing that the profiles are consistent with WMAP's beam models, in disagreement with the findings of Sawangwit & Shanks (2010). These results require that the source sample's selection is not biased by CMB fluctuations. We compare profiles from sources in the standard WMAP catalog, the WMAP catalog selected from a CMB-free combination of data, and the NVSS catalog, and quantify the agreement with fits to simple parametric beam models. We estimate the biases in source profiles due to alignments with positive CMB fluctuations, finding them roughly consistent with those biases found with the WMAP standard catalog. Addressing those biases, we find source spectral indices significantly steeper than those used by WMAP, with strong evidence for spectral steepening above 61 GHz. Such changes modify the power spectrum correction required for unresolved point sources, and tend to weaken somewhat the evidence for deviation from a Harrison-Zel'dovich primordial spectrum, but more analysis is required. Finally, we discuss implications for current CMB experiments.
The prime evidence underpinning the standard LCDM cosmological model is the CMB power spectrum as observed by WMAP and other microwave experiments. But Sawangwit & Shanks (2010) have recently shown that the WMAP CMB power spectrum is highly sensitive to the beam profile of the WMAP telescope. Here, we use the source catalogue from the Planck Early Data Release to test further the WMAP beam profiles. We confirm that stacked beam profiles at Q, V and particularly at W appear wider than expected when compared to the Jupiter beam, normalised either directly to the radio source profiles or using Pl…
In (Scodeller et al.) a new and extended point source catalogue obtained from the WMAP 7-year data was presented. It includes most of the sources included in the standard WMAP 7-year point source catalogues as well as a large number of new detections. Here we study the effects on the estimated CMB power spectrum when taking the newly detected point sources into consideration. We create point source masks for all the 2102 sources that we detected as well as a smaller one for the 665 sources detected in the Q, V and W bands. We also create WMAP7 maps with point sources subtracted in order to com…
The point source list of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) is a uniform, all-sky catalogue of bright sources with flux density measurements at high (up to 94 GHz) radio frequencies. We investigated the five-year WMAP list to compile a new catalogue of bright and compact extragalactic radio sources to be potentially studied with Very Long Baseline Interferometry at millimeter wavelengths (mm-VLBI) and Space VLBI (SVLBI). After comparing the WMAP data with the existing mm-VLBI catalogues, we sorted out the yet unexplored sources. Using the 41, 61 and 94 GHz WMAP flux densities, we …
We measure a significant correlation between the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in the Planck and WMAP maps and an X-ray cluster map based on ROSAT. We use the 100, 143 and 343 GHz Planck maps and the WMAP 94 GHz map to obtain this cluster cross spectrum. We check our measurements for contamination from dusty galaxies using the cross correlations with the 220, 545 and 843 GHz maps from Planck. Our measurement yields a direct characterization of the cluster power spectrum over a wide range of angular scales that is consistent with large cosmological simulations. The amplitude of this signal …
The aim of this work is to characterize the average Fe K emission properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the source rest-frame. We selected a sample of 248 AGNs from the 2XMM catalog, covering a wide redshift range 0 < z < 5 and with the EPIC-PN net 2-10 keV rest-frame counts >=200 and power law photon indices in the range 1.5-2.2. We employed two fully independent rest-frame stacking procedures to compute the mean Fe K profile. The counting statistics for the integrated spectrum is comparable to the one available for the best studied local Seyferts. To identify the artifacts possibly …
The detection of point sources in Cosmic Microwave Background maps is usually based on a single-frequency approach, whereby maps at each frequency are filtered separately and the spectral information on the sources is derived combining the results at the different frequencies. On the contrary, in the case of multi-frequency detection methods, source detection and spectral information are tightly interconnected in order to increase the source detection efficiency. In this work we apply the \emph{matched multifilter} method to the detection of point sources in the WMAP 7yr data at 61 and 94 GHz.…
We examine the Sunyaev--Zeldovich (SZ) effect in the 7-yr Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data by cross-correlating it with the Planck Early-release Sunyaev--Zeldovich catalog. Our analysis proceeds in two parts. We first perform a stacking analysis in which the filtered WMAP data are averaged at the locations of the 175 Planck clusters. We then perform a regression analysis to compare the mean amplitude of the SZ signal, Y_{500}, in the WMAP data to the corresponding amplitude in the Planck data. The aggregate Planck clusters are detected in the 7-yr WMAP data with a signal-to-noi…
Combining measurements taken using the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) from 2001 to 2008 with measurements taken using Planck from 2009 to 2010, we investigate the long-term flux density variability of extragalactic radio sources selected from the Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue. The single-year, single-frequency WMAP maps are used to estimate yearly-averaged flux densities of the sources in the four WMAP bands: Ka (33 GHz), Q (41 GHz), V (61 GHz), and W (94 GHz). We identify 82, 67, 32, and 15 sources respectively as variable at greater than 99% confidence level in t…
Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect can be estimated by cross-correlating Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) sky with tracers of the local matter distribution. At late cosmic time, the dark energy induced decay of gravitation potential generates a cross-correlation signal on large angular scales. The dominant noise are the intrinsic CMB anisotropies from the inflationary epoch. In this Letter we use CMB polarization to reduce this intrinsic noise. We cross-correlate the microwave sky observed by Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) with the radio source catalog compiled by NRAO VLA Sky S…
In these proceedings, we discuss the extraction, in WMAP 5 year data, of a clean CMB map, of foreground emission (dominated by emission of the interstellar medium of our galaxy), and of the tiny signal from Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect in the direction of known galaxy clusters. The implementation of an Internal Linear Combination method locally in both pixel and harmonic space, with the use of a decomposition of WMAP maps onto a frame of spherical needlets, permits to extract a full sky CMB map, with good accuracy even in regions close to the galactic plane. Proper subtraction of this estimated C…
We present our measurement of the "bulk flow" using the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect in the WMAP 7-year data. As the tracer of peculiar velocities, we use Planck Early Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Detected Cluster Catalog and a compilation of X-ray detected galaxy cluster catalogs based on ROSAT All-Sky Survey. We build a full-sky kSZ template and fit it to the WMAP data in W-band. Using a Wiener filter we maximize the signal to noise ratio of the kSZ cluster signal in the data. We find no significant detection of the bulk flow, and our results are consistent with the LCDM prediction.
We present a map of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies induced by the late Integrated Sachs Wolfe effect. The map is constructed by combining the information of the WMAP 7-yr CMB data and the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) through a linear filter. This combination improves the quality of the map that would be obtained using information only from the Large Scale Structure data. In order to apply the filter, a given cosmological model needs to be assumed. In particular, we consider the standard LCDM model. As a test of consistency, we show that the reconstructed map is in agreemet wi…
We present polarization measurements at 8.4, 22, and 43 GHz made with the VLA of a complete sample of extragalactic sources stronger than 1 Jy in the 5-year WMAP catalogue and with declinations north of -34 degrees. The observations were motivated by the need to know the polarization properties of radio sources at frequencies of tens of GHz in order to subtract polarized foregrounds for future sensitive Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments. The total intensity and polarization measurements are generally consistent with comparable VLA calibration measurements for less-variable sources,…
We present an alternative estimate of the unresolved point source contribution to the WMAP temperature power spectrum based on current knowledge of sources from radio surveys in the 1.4-90 GHz range. We implement a stochastic extrapolation of radio point sources in the NRAO-VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) catalog, from the original 1.4 GHz to the ~ 100 GHz frequency range relevant for CMB experiments. With a bootstrap approach, we generate an ensemble of realizations that provides the probability distribution for the flux of each NVSS source at the final frequency. The predicted source counts agree with…
We have developed a new needlet based method to detect point sources in cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps and have applied it to the WMAP 7 year data. We use both the individual frequency channels as well as internal templates, the difference between pairs of frequency channels, with the advantage that the CMB component is eliminated. Using the area of the sky outside the Kq85 galactic mask, we detect a total of 2102 point sources at the $5σ$ level in either the frequency maps or the internal templates. Of these, 1116 are detected either at $5σ$ directly in the frequency channels or at $5…
In the context of the study of the ISW, we revisit the angular cross correlation of WMAP CMB data with the NVSS radio survey. We compute 2-point cross functions between the two surveys in real and in Fourier space, paying particular attention on the dependence of results on the flux of NVSS radio sources, the angular scales where correlations arise and the comparison with theoretical expectations. We reproduce previous results that claim an excess of correlation in the angular correlation function (ACF), and we also find some (low significance) similarity between the CMB and radio galaxy data …
For 2442 galaxies of the catalog, compiled based on the NED, SDSS, and CATS survey data with redshifts z, > 0.3 we conducted an analysis of the amplitude of temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in the points, corresponding to the direction to these objects. To this end, we used the ILC map from the WMAP mission seven-year data release. We have estimated the dipole component of the background and tested the hypothesis of Kashlinsky on the existence of a "dark bulk flow", determined for the estimated dipole component of the CMB WMAP by the value of the CMB anisotropy…
The "dark flow" dipole is a statistically significant dipole found at the position of galaxy clusters in filtered maps of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropies. The dipole measured in WMAP 3, 5 and 7 yr data releases was 1) mutually consistent, 2) roughly aligned with the all-sky CMB dipole and 3) correlated with clusters' X-ray luminosity. We analyzed WMAP 9 yr and the 1st yr Planck data releases using a catalog of 980 clusters outside the Kp0 mask to test our earlier findings. The dipoles measured on these new data sets are fully compatible with our earlier estimates, be…
We estimate the local density field in redshift shells to a maximum redshift of z=0.3, using photometric redshifts for the 2MASS galaxy catalogue, matched to optical data from the SuperCOSMOS galaxy catalogue. This density-field map is used to predict the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) CMB anisotropies that originate within the volume at z<0.3. We investigate the impact of this estimated ISW foreground signal on large-scale anomalies in the WMAP CMB data. We find that removal of the foreground ISW signal from WMAP data reduces the significance of a number of reported large-scale anomalies in the…
Using WMAP 5 year data, we look for the average Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) signal from clusters of galaxies by stacking the regions around hundreds of known X-ray clusters. We detect the average SZE at a very high significance level. The average cluster signal is spatially resolved in the W band. This mean signal is compared with the expected signal from the same clusters calculated on the basis of archival ROSAT data. From the comparison we conclude that the observed SZE seems to be less than the expected signal derived from X-ray measurements when a standard beta-model is assumed for th…

We use the Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue combined with WMAP and other archival measurements to construct continuum spectra of three nearby dusty star-forming galaxies: Messier 82, NGC 253 and NGC 4945. We carry out a least-squares fit to the spectra using a combination of simple synchrotron, free-free and thermal dust models, and look for evidence of anomalous microwave emission (AME). We find that the radio spectra of all three galaxies are consistent with steep spectrum synchrotron emission, with a significant amount of free-free emission required to explain the Planck and WM…
In experimental microwave maps, point-sources can strongly affect the estimation of the power-spectrum and/or the test of Gaussianity of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) component. As a consequence, their removal from the sky maps represents a critical step in the analysis of the CMB data. Before removing a source, however, it is necessary to detect it and source extraction consists of a delicate preliminary operation. In the literature, various techniques have been presented to detect point-sources in the sky maps. The most sophisticated ones exploit the multi-frequency nature of the obs…
We analyze publicly available void catalogs of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 10 at redshifts $0.4<z<0.7$. The first goal of this paper is to extend the Cosmic Microwave Background stacking analysis of previous spectroscopic void samples at $z<0.4$. In addition, the DR10 void catalog provides the first chance to spectroscopically probe the volume of the Granett et al. (2008) supervoid catalog that constitutes the only set of voids which has shown a significant detection of a cross-correlation signal between void locations and average CMB chill. We found that the posit…
The kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect -- the Doppler boosting of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons scattering off free electrons with non-zero line-of-sight velocity -- is an excellent probe of the distribution of baryons in the Universe. In this paper, we measure the kSZ effect due to ionized gas traced by infrared-selected galaxies from the \emph{unWISE} catalog. We employ the "projected-field" kSZ estimator, which does not require spectroscopic galaxy redshifts. To suppress non-kSZ foreground signals associated with the galaxies (e.g., dust emission and thermal SZ), this est…
We present follow-up observations of 97 point sources from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 3-year data, contained within the New Extragalactic WMAP Point Source (NEWPS) catalogue between declinations of -4 and +60 degrees; the sources form a flux-density-limited sample complete to 1.1 Jy (approximately 5 sigma) at 33 GHz. Our observations were made at 16 GHz using the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) and at 33 GHz with the Very Small Array (VSA). 94 of the sources have reliable, simultaneous -- typically a few minutes apart -- observations with both telescopes. The spectra be…
We use the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 7-year data (WMAP7) to further probe point source detection technique in the sky maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. The method by Tegmark et al. for foreground reduced maps and the Kolmogorov parameter as the descriptor are adopted for the analysis of WMAP satellite CMB temperature data. Part of the detected points coincide with point sources already revealed by other methods. However, we have also found 2 source candidates for which still no counterparts are known, and identified 7 point sources listed in Planck Early Relea…
Using the published WMAP 5-year data, we first show how sensitive the WMAP power spectra are to the form of the WMAP beam. It is well known that the beam profile derived from observations of Jupiter is non-Gaussian and indeed extends, in the W band for example, well beyond its 12.'6 FWHM core out to more than 1 degree in radius. This means that even though the core width corresponds to wavenumber l\approx1800, the form of the beam still significantly affects the WMAP results even at l\approx200 which is the scale of the first acoustic peak. The difference between the beam convolved C_l and the…
This paper describes the image stacks and catalogs of the CFHT Legacy Survey produced using using the MegaPipe data pipeline at the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre. The Legacy Survey is divided into to two parts: The Deep Survey consists of 4 fields each of 1 square degree, with magnitude limits of u=27.5, g=27.9, r=27.7, i=27.4, and z=26.2, and contains 1.6 million sources. The Wide Survey consists of 171 square degree pointings split over 4 fields, with magnitude limits of u=26.0, g=26.5, r=25.9, i=25.7, and z=24.6, and contains 30 million sources. This paper describes the calibration, image …
We search for the dark flow induced diffuse kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect through CMB-galaxy cross correlation. Such angular correlation is anisotropic, with a unique $cos(theta_DF)$ angular dependence and hence can be distinguished from other components. Here, $theta_DF$ is the angle between the opposite dark flow direction and the direction of the sky where the correlation is measured. We analyze the KIAS-VAGC galaxy catalog of SDSS-DR7 and the WMAP seven-year temperature maps, applying an unbiased optimal weighting scheme to eliminate any statistically isotropic components and to …
(Abridged) We carried out an extensive search to identify the counterparts of all the sources listed in the WMAP 3-yr catalogue using literature and archival data. Our work led to the identification of 309 WMAP sources, 98% of which are blazars, radio quasars or radio galaxies. At present, 15 objects still remain without identification due to the lack of optical spectroscopic data or a clear radio counterpart. Our results allow us to define a flux limited sample of 203 high Galactic latitude microwave sources ($f_{41GHz} \ge 1$ Jy, $|b_{\rm II}| > 15^\circ$) which is virtually completely ident…
The Kolmogorov stochasticity parameter is shown to act as a tool to detect point sources in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation temperature maps. Kolmogorov CMB map constructed for the WMAP's 7-year datasets reveals tiny structures which in part coincide with point radio and Fermi/LAT gamma-ray sources. In the first application of this method, we identified several sources not present in the then available 0FGL Fermi catalog. Subsequently they were confirmed in the more recent and more complete 1FGL catalog, thus strengthening the evidence for the power of this methodology.
We established a sample of millimeter-wave and gamma-ray bright active galactic nuclei matching the WMAP catalog with the EGRET catalog, highest energy photons and the Fermi bright source list. We have monitored over 80 of these objects in the near infrared, obtaining over 2000 JHKs data points directly comparable with Fermi data. We present examples of correlated near infrared and gamma-ray activity of known blazars and recently identified sources.
Measuring radio source counts is critical for characterizing new extragalactic populations, brings a wealth of science within reach and will inform forecasts for SKA and its pathfinders. Yet there is currently great debate (and few measurements) about the behaviour of the 1.4-GHz counts in the microJy regime. One way to push the counts to these levels is via 'stacking', the covariance of a map with a catalogue at higher resolution and (often) a different wavelength. For the first time, we cast stacking in a fully bayesian framework, applying it to (i) the SKADS simulation and (ii) VLA data sta…
We present a statistical method based on a maximum likelihood approach to constrain the number counts of extragalactic sources below the nominal flux-density limit of continuum imaging surveys. We extract flux densities from a radio map using positional information from an auxiliary catalogue and show that we can model the number counts of this undetected population down to flux density levels well below the detection threshold of the radio survey. We demonstrate the capabilities that our method will have with future generation wide-area radio surveys by performing simulations over various sky…
The XMM-Newton X-ray observatory has repeatedly observed the CDFS in 33 epochs (2001-2010) through the XMM-CDFS Deep Survey. During the X-ray observations, XMM-OM targeted the central 17x17 arcmin2 region of the X-ray field of view, providing simultaneous optical/UV coverage of the CDFS. The resulting set of data can be used to build an XMM-OM catalogue of the CDFS, filling the UV spectral coverage between the optical surveys and GALEX observations. We present the UV catalogue of the XMM-CDFS Deep Survey. Its main purpose is to provide complementary UV average photometric measurements of known…
Using the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) at 16 GHz and the Very Small Array (VSA) at 33 GHz to make follow-up observations of sources in the New Extragalactic WMAP Point Source Catalogue, we have investigated the flux-density variability in a complete sample of 97 sources over timescales of a few months to approximately 1.5 years. We find that 53 per cent of the 93 sources, for which we have multiple observations, are variable, at the 99 per cent confidence level, above the flux density calibration uncertainties of approximately 4 per cent at 16 GHz; the fraction of sources having varied b…
This paper describes the MegaPipe image processing pipeline at the Canadian Astronomical Data Centre (CADC). The pipeline takes multiple images from the MegaCam mosaic camera on CFHT and combines them into a single output image. MegaPipe takes as input detrended MegaCam images and does a careful astrometric and photometric calibration on them. The calibrated images are then resampled and combined into image stacks. MegaPipe is run on PI data by request, data from large surveys (the CFHT Legacy Survey and the Next Generation Virgo Survey) and all non-proprietary MegaCam data in the CFHT archive…
[Abridged] We present updated estimates of Galactic foreground emission using seven years of WMAP data. Using the power spectrum of differences between multi-frequency template-cleaned maps, we find no evidence for foreground contamination outside of the updated (KQ85y7) foreground mask. We place a 15 microKelvin upper bound on rms foreground contamination in the cleaned maps used for cosmological analysis. We find no indication in the polarization data of an extra "haze" of hard synchrotron emission from energetic electrons near the Galactic center. We provide an updated map of the cosmic mic…
More than half of the sources identified by recent radio sky surveys have not been detected by wide-field optical surveys. We present a study based on our co-added image stacking technique, in which our aim is to detect the optical emission from unresolved, isolated radio sources of the Very Large Array (VLA) Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-cm (FIRST) survey that have no identified optical counterparts in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 co-added data set. From the FIRST catalogue, 2116 such radio point sources were selected, and cut-out images, centred on the FIRST coordi…
It is well known that both the star formation rate and the cold gas content of a galaxy depend on the local density out to distances of a few Megaparsecs. In this paper, we compare the environmental density dependence of the atomic gas mass fractions of nearby galaxies with the density dependence of their central and global specific star formation rates. We stack HI line spectra extracted from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey centered on galaxies with UV imaging from GALEX and optical imaging/spectroscopy from SDSS. We use these stacked spectra to evaluate the mean atomic gas mass fraction …
We present new results on the "dark flow" from a measurement of the dipole in the distribution of peculiar velocities of galaxy clusters, applying the methodology proposed and developed by us earlier. Our latest measurement is conducted using new, low-noise 7-yr WMAP data as well as an all-sky sample of X-ray selected galaxy clusters compiled exclusively from published catalogs. Our analysis of the CMB signature of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect finds a statistically significant dipole at the location of galaxy clusters. The residual dipole outside the cluster regions is small, re…

Using the most recent data from the WMAP, ACT and SPT experiments, we update the constraints on models with oscillatory features in the primordial power spectrum of scalar perturbations. This kind of features can appear in models of inflation where slow-roll is interrupted, like multifield models. We also derive constraints for the case in which, in addition to cosmic microwave observations, we also consider the data on the spectrum of luminous red galaxies from the 7th SDSS catalog, and the SNIa Union Compilation 2 data. We have found that: (i) considering a model with features in the primord…
The ALPINE-ALMA large program targets the [CII] 158 $μ$m line and the far-infrared continuum in 118 spectroscopically confirmed star-forming galaxies between z=4.4 and z=5.9. It represents the first large [CII] statistical sample built in this redshift range. We present details of the data processing and the construction of the catalogs. We detected 23 of our targets in the continuum. To derive accurate infrared luminosities and obscured star formation rates, we measured the conversion factor from the ALMA 158 $μ$m rest-frame dust continuum luminosity to the total infrared luminosity (L$_{\rm …

We detect the diffuse thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect from the gas filaments between the Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) pairs using a new approach relying on stacking the individual frequency maps. We apply and demonstrate our method on ~88000 LRG pairs in the SDSS DR12 catalogue selected with an improved selection criterion that ensures minimal contamination by the Galactic CO emission as well as the tSZ signal from the clusters of galaxies. We first stack the Planck channel maps and then perform the Internal Linear Combination method to extract the diffuse $y_{\rm sz}$ signal. Our $Stack$ …
