It is at present well known that conditions at some massive binary systems allow acceleration of particles and production of the GeV-TeV gamma-rays. However, which particles are responsible for this emission and what radiation processes are engaged is at present not completely clear. We discuss what parameters can determine the acceleration process of particles and high energy radiation produced by them within massive binary systems.
Gamma-ray binaries are X-ray binaries with gamma-ray emissions. Their multi-wavelength emissions range from radio, optical, X-ray and to very high energy (TeV). X-ray emissions are crucial to understand the nature of gamma-ray binaries. INTEGRAL and RXTE have covered and monitored most of the gamma-ray binaries in hard and soft X-rays. Here we report the results of several gamma-ray binaries and possible gamma-ray binaries from INTEGRAL and RXTE.
I present a review of the main phenomenological properties at high energies related to massive gamma-ray binaries and I discuss some aspects of pulsar models for these objects.
Gamma-ray binaries are suitable sources to study high-energy processes in jets and outflows in general. We review the multiwavelength properties of the few known gamma-ray binaries, focusing on extended emission recently resolved with Chandra. We discuss the implications of these findings for the nature of compact objects and for physical processes operating in these systems.
More than a dozen binary systems are now established as sources of variable, high energy (HE, 0.1-100 GeV) gamma rays. Gamma-ray binaries are a subclass of high-mass binary systems whose energy spectrum peaks at high energies (E$\gtrsim$100 MeV) and extends to very high energies (E$\gtrsim$100 GeV) $γ$ rays. In this review we summarize properties of well-studied non-transient $γ$-ray binaries as well as briefly discuss poorly known systems and transient systems hosting a microquasar. GeV gamma-ray emission from two gamma-ray binary candidates, HESS J0632+057 and AGL J2241+4454, which were recently reported by H.E.S.S. and AGILE, respectively, have been searched for using the Fermi-LAT archival dataset. Spatial and temporal distribution of gamma-ray events are studied, but there was no evidence for GeV gamma-ray signal from either sources.
Recent ground based and space telescopes that detect high energy photons from a few up to hundreds of gigaelectron volts (GeV) have opened a new window on the universe. However, because of the relatively poor angular resolution of these telescopes, a large fraction of the thousands of sources of gamma-rays observed remains unknown. Compact astrophysical objects are among those high energy sources, and in the Milky Way there is a particular class called "Gamma-Ray Binaries".
Advances in X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy have opened a new window on our universe and revealed a wide variety of binaries composed of a compact object and a Be star. In Be X-ray binaries, a neutron star accretes the Be disk and truncates it through tidal interactions. Such systems have important X-ray outbursts, some related to the disk structure. In other systems, strong gamma ray emission is observed. In gamma-ray binaries, the neutron star is not accreting but driving a highly relativistic wind. We discuss Fermi observations of gamma-ray loud binaries. We show that within hadronic model of activity of LSI +61 303, detection of cut-off in the GeV spectrum constrains maximal energy of the primary protons. In this way, the GeV gamma-ray data impose constraint on the expected neutrino signal (spectrum and lightcurve) from the source. We also briefly discuss perspectives of GeV band detection of PSR B1259-63 during the 2010 periastron passage.
Gamma-ray binaries are colliding wind binaries (CWB) composed of a massive star a non-accreting pulsar with a highly relativistic wind. Particle acceleration at the shocks results in emission going from extended radio emission to the gamma-ray band. The interaction region is expected to show common features with stellar CWB. We analyze the model of gamma-ray binaries, consisting of a massive star and a pulsar with ultrarelativistic wind. We consider radiation from energetic particles, accelerated at the pulsar wind termination shock, and feedback of this radiation on the wind through production of secondary electron-positron pairs. We show that the pair feedback limits the Lorentz factor of the pulsar wind and creates a population of very energetic pairs, whose radiation may be responsible for the observed gamma-ray signal.
High-mass binary systems involve extreme environments that produce non-thermal emission from radio to gamma rays. The high-energy radiation from short period binaries containing a massive star with a compact relativistic companion was detected from radio to TeV gamma rays. We show here that PeV regime protons can be efficiently accelerated in the regions of collision of relativistic outflows of a compact object with stellar winds in these systems. Gamma-ray binaries have been uncovered as a new class of Galactic objects in the very high energy sky (> 100 GeV). The three systems known today have hard X-ray spectra (photon index ~ 1.5), extended radio emission and a high luminosity in gamma-rays. X-ray and gamma-ray binaries are systems consisting of a compact object and normally a non-degenerate companion star. Most of these sources have been shown to emit radiation in a broad frequency range, from radio up to X-rays and sometimes gamma rays. We report on recent results in very high-energy gamma rays above 100 GeV obtained by the MAGIC Collaboration for the Galactic X-ray binaries MAXI J1820+070 and 1A 0535+262, and the gamma-ray binary HESS J0632+057. Multiwavelength data at lower energies are also provided for a better contextualisation of the sources.

In our search for gamma-ray emission from Be X-ray binaries from analysis of the data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, we find likely detection of GRO J1008-57. The binary has an orbital period of 249.48 days, and it is only significantly detected in its orbital phase 0.8--0.9 (>4 sigma). Further light curve analysis indicates that the detection is probably largely due to an emitting event in one orbital cycle around year 2012--2013, following a giant X-ray outburst of the source. We simulate the spectral behaviour of the non-transient gamma-ray binaries using archival observations as a reference. With this we test the CTA capability to measure the sources' spectral parameters and detect variability on various time scales. Binary systems can be powerful sources of non-thermal emission from radio to gamma rays. When the latter are detected, then these objects are known as gamma-ray binaries. In this work, we explore, in the context of gamma-ray binaries, different acceleration processes to estimate their efficiency: Fermi I, Fermi II, shear acceleration, the converter mechanism, and magnetic reconnection. We find that Fermi I acceleration in a mildly relativistic shock can provide, although marginally, the multi-10 TeV particles required to explain observations. Expanding the sample of gamma-ray binaries and identifying unknown Fermi sources are currently of great interest to the community. Based upon their positional coincidence with the unidentified Fermi sources 1FGL J1127.7-6244c and 1FGL J1808.5-1954c, the Be stars HD 99771 and HD 165783 have been proposed as gamma-ray binary candidates. We consider a popular model for long-duration gamma-ray bursts, in which the progenitor star, a stripped helium core, is spun up by tidal interactions with a black- hole companion in a compact binary. We perform population synthesis calculations to produce a representative sample of such binaries, and model the effect that the companion has on material that falls back on to the newly-formed black hole. Taking the results of hydrodynamic models of black-hole formation by fallback as our starting point, we show that the companion has two main effects on the fallback process. First, a break forms…
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are radio transients lasting only about a few milliseconds. They seem to occur at cosmological distances. We propose that these events can be originated in the collapse of the magnetosphere of Kerr-Newman black holes (KNBHs). We show that the closed orbits of charged particles in the magnetosphere of these objects are unstable. After examining the dependencies on the specific charge of the particle and the spin and charge of the KNBH, we conclude that the resulting timescale and radiation mechanism fit well with the extant observations of FRBs. Observations of two well known binary systems (LS 5039 and LS I +61 303) with the satellite and Cherenkov telescopes revealed the broad band $γ$-ray spectra which seems to show two components, the first at GeV energies, showing exponential cut-off at a few GeV, and the second at TeV energies which does not fit well to the extrapolation of spectrum from the GeV energy range. There are only a few sources that are definitely known to be gamma-ray binaries. Two of these are listed as associations in the Fermi LAT Bright Source List. We are developing novel techniques to extract high signal-to-noise light curves of all cataloged Fermi sources and to search for periodic variability using appropriately weighted power spectra. Reliable neutron star mass measurements are key to determining the equation-of-state of cold nuclear matter, but these are rare. "Black Widows" and "Redbacks" are compact binaries consisting of millisecond pulsars and semi-degenerate companion stars. Spectroscopy of the optically bright companions can determine their radial velocities, providing inclination-dependent pulsar mass estimates.
