We investigated the multiband emission from the pulsar binaries XSS J12270-4859, PSR J2039-5617, and PSR J2339-0533, which exhibit orbital modulation in the X-ray and gamma-ray bands. We constructed the sources' broadband spectral energy distributions and multiband orbital light curves by supplementing our X-ray measurements with published gamma-ray results, and we modeled the data using intra-binary shock (IBS) scenarios. While the X-ray data were well explained by synchrotron emission from electrons/positrons in the IBS, the gamma-ray data were difficult to explain with the IBS components alone. Therefore, we explored other scenarios that had been suggested for gamma-ray emission from pulsar binaries: (1) inverse-Compton emission in the upstream unshocked wind zone and (2) synchrotron radiation from electrons/positrons interacting with a kilogauss magnetic field of the companion. Scenario (1) requires that the bulk motion of the wind substantially decelerates to ~1000km/s before reaching the IBS for increased residence time, in which case formation of a strong shock is untenable, inconsistent with the X-ray phenomenology. Scenario (2) can explain the data if we assume the presence of electrons/positrons with a Lorentz factor of ~$10^8$ (~0.1 PeV) that pass through the IBS and tap a substantial portion of the pulsar voltage drop. These findings raise the possibility that the orbitally-modulating gamma-ray signals from pulsar binaries can provide insights into the flow structure and energy conversion within pulsar winds and particle acceleration nearing PeV energies in pulsars. These signals may also yield greater understanding of kilogauss magnetic fields potentially hosted by the low-mass stars in these systems.
Redback millisecond pulsars (hereafter redbacks) are a sub-population of eclipsing millisecond pulsars in close binaries. The formation processes of these systems are not clear. The three pulsars showing transitions between rotation- and accretion-powered states belong to both redbacks and transient low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), suggesting a possible evolutionary link between the them. Through binary evolution calculations, we show that the accretion disks in almost all LMXBs are subject to the thermal-viscous instability during certain evolutionary stages, and the parameter space for the d…
We present the discovery of a likely new redback millisecond pulsar binary associated with the \emph{Fermi} $γ$-ray source 4FGL J2333.1--5527. Using optical photometric and spectroscopic observations from the SOAR telescope, we identify a low-mass, main sequence-like companion in a 6.9-hr, highly inclined orbit around a suspected massive neutron star primary. Archival XMM-Newton X-ray observations show this system has a hard power-law spectrum $Γ= 1.6\pm0.3$ and $L_X \sim 5 \times 10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$, consistent with redback millisecond pulsar binaries. Our data suggest that for secondary ma…
Compact binary millisecond pulsars with main-sequence donors, often referred to as "redbacks", constitute the long-sought link between low-mass X-ray binaries and millisecond radio pulsars, and offer a unique probe of the interaction between pulsar winds and accretion flows. We present a systematic study of eight nearby redbacks, using more than 100 observations obtained with Swift's X-ray Telescope. We distinguish between three main states: pulsar, disk and outburst states. We find X-ray mode switching in the disk state of PSR J1023+0038 and XSS J12270-4859, similar to what was found in the o…
We report optical modulation of the companion to the X-ray source U18 in the globular cluster NGC 6397. U18, with combined evidence from radio and X-ray measurements, is a strong candidate as the second redback in this cluster, initially missed in pulsar searches. This object is a bright variable star with an anomalous red color and optical variability (\sim 0.2 mag in amplitude) with a periodicity \sim 1.96 days that can be interpreted as the orbital period. This value corresponds to the longest orbital period for known redback candidates and confirmed systems in Galactic globular clusters an…
We have discovered a new candidate redback millisecond pulsar binary near the center of the error ellipse of the bright unassociated Fermi-LAT $γ$-ray source 4FGL J0940.3-7610. The candidate counterpart is a variable optical source that also shows faint X-ray emission. Optical photometric and spectroscopic monitoring with the SOAR telescope indicates the companion is a low-mass star in a 6.5-hr orbit around an invisible primary, showing both ellipsoidal variations and irradiation and consistent with the properties of known redback millisecond pulsar binaries. Given the orbital parameters, prel…
Several redback and black widow millisecond pulsar binaries have episodes of flaring in X-rays and optical. We initially detected such behavior from the Fermi selected redback candidate 1FGL J0523.5$-$2529 during optical time-series monitoring. Triggered observations with the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory over the next $\approx100$ days showed episodic flaring in X-rays with luminosity up to $8\times10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$ ($\sim100$ times the minimum), and a comparable luminosity in the optical/UV, with similar power-law spectra of $f_ν\proptoν^{-0.7}$. These are the most luminous flares seen …
We present the discovery of the variable optical and X-ray counterparts to the radio millisecond pulsar (MSP) PSR J1306-40, recently discovered by Keane et al. We find that both the optical and X-ray fluxes are modulated with the same period, which allows us to measure for the first time the orbital period P$_{\rm orb}$=1.09716[6] d. The optical properties are consistent with a main sequence companion with spectral type G to mid K and, together with the X-ray luminosity (8.8$\times$10$^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the 0.5-10 keV band, for a distance of 1.2 kpc), confirm the redback classification of …
Long expected transition states between the rotation powered and accretion powered non-thermal emission in the millisecond pulsar binary systems have been recently observed in the case of three objects PSR J1023+0038, PSR J1824-2452, and PSR J1227-4859. Surprisingly, the transition is related to the significant change in the $γ$-ray flux being a factor of a few higher with the presence of an accretion disk. The origin of this enhanced emission seems to be related to the penetration of the inner pulsar magnetosphere by the accretion disk. We propose that the radiation processes, characteristic …
We present optical observations of the redback millisecond pulsar PSR J1048+2339, which is a 4.66 ms radio pulsar in a compact binary with an orbital period of six hours. We obtained high-quality light curves of PSR J1048+2339 with the Lulin 1 m Telescope. The system shows two distinct six-hour orbital modulations, in which an ellipsoidal modulation changes into a sinusoidal-like profile in less than 14 days. In addition to the change, the brightness of the companion increased by one magnitude, suggesting that the latter type of modulation is caused by the pulsar wind heating of the companion …
We present a multi-wavelength study of the unidentified Fermi object, 3FGL J0212.1+5320. Within the 95% error ellipse, Chandra detects a bright X-ray source (i.e., F(0.5-7keV) = 1.4e-12 erg/cm^2/s), which has a low-mass optical counterpart (M < 0.4 Msun and T ~ 6000 K). A clear ellipsoidal modulation is shown in optical/infrared at 20.87 hours. The gamma-ray properties of 3FGL J0212.1+5320 are all consistent with that of a millisecond pulsar, suggesting that it is a gamma-ray redback millisecond pulsar binary with a low-mass companion filling > 64% of the Roche-lobe. If confirmed, it will be a…
We have investigated the X-ray and $γ$-ray properties of the redback millisecond pulsar PSR J1723-2837 with XMM-Newton, Chandra and Fermi. We have discovered the X-ray orbital modulation of this binary system with the minimum that coincides with the phases of radio eclipse. The X-ray emission is clearly non-thermal in nature which can be well described by a simple power-law with a photon index of $\sim1.2$. The phase-averaged luminosity is $\sim9\times10^{31}$ erg/s in 0.3-10 keV which consumes $\sim0.2\%$ of the spin-down power. We have detected the $γ-$ray emission in $0.1-300$ GeV from this…
We have investigated the intrabinary shock emission from the redback millisecond pulsar PSR J2129-0429 with XMM-Newton and Fermi. Orbital modulation in X-ray and UV can be clearly seen. Its X-ray modulation has a double-peak structure with a dip in between. The observed X-rays are non-thermal dominant which can be modeled by a power-law with a photon index of ~1.2. Intrabinary shock can be the origin of the observed X-rays. The UV light curve is resulted from the ellipsoidal modulation of the companion. Modeling the UV light curve prefers a large viewing angle. The heating effect of the UV lig…
We present the first results from a joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observation of the gamma-ray emitting millisecond pulsar compact binary PSR J2129-0429. X-ray emission up to about 40 keV is detected and the joint spectrum can be modeled with a power-law plus a neutron star atmosphere model. At a distance of 1.4 kpc, the 0.3-79 keV luminosity is $3.56\times10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We also detected the 0.64-day binary orbital period with a double-peaked structure across the wavebands. By combining the updated Fermi GeV data, we modeled the broadband spectral energy distribution as well as the X-ray…
Eclipsing binary millisecond pulsars (the so-called black widows and redbacks) can provide important information about accretion history, pulsar irradiation of their companion stars and the evolutionary link between accreting X-ray pulsars and isolated millisecond pulsars. However, the formation of such systems is not well understood, nor the difference in progenitor evolution between the two populations of black widows and redbacks. Whereas both populations have orbital periods between $0.1-1.0\;{\rm days}$ their companion masses differ by an order of magnitude. In this paper, we investigate …
Binary systems composed of a recycled millisecond pulsar and a stellar companion in close orbit could be excellent sites to diagnose pulsar winds. In such systems, the pulsar outflow irradiates and heats up the companion atmosphere, which can lead to the observation of strong day/night modulations in temperature. We demonstrate with particle shower simulations that the particle energy of the wind affects the heating depth in the atmosphere: the wind heat can be deposited above or below the photosphere, leading to different signatures in the observed spectra. We apply our method to four specifi…
The eclipses of certain types of binary millisecond pulsars (i.e. `black widows' and `redbacks') are often studied using high-time-resolution, `beamformed' radio observations. However, they may also be detected in images generated from interferometric data. As part of a larger imaging project to characterize the variable and transient sky at radio frequencies <200 MHz, we have blindly detected the redback system PSR J2215+5135 as a variable source of interest with the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR). Using observations with cadences of 2 weeks - 6 months, we find preliminary evidence that the ecli…
We study the evolution of close binary systems composed of a normal, intermediate mass star and a neutron star considering a chemical composition typical of that present in globular clusters (Z = 0.001). We look for similarities and differences with respect to solar composition donor stars, which we have extensively studied in the past. As a definite example, we perform an application on one of the redbacks located in a globular cluster. We performed a detailed grid of models in order to find systems that represent the so-called redback binary radio pulsar systems with donor star masses betwee…
We present the first optical spectroscopy of five confirmed (or strong candidate) redback millisecond pulsar binaries, obtaining complete radial velocity curves for each companion star. The properties of these millisecond pulsar binaries with low-mass, hydrogen-rich companions are discussed in the context of the 14 confirmed and 10 candidate field redbacks. We find that the neutron stars in redbacks have a median mass of 1.78 +/- 0.09 M_sun with a dispersion of sigma = 0.21 +/- 0.09. Neutron stars with masses in excess of 2 M_sun are consistent with, but not firmly demanded by, current observa…
We are monitoring established and putative redback millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in time-series photometry, repeatedly covering their 5-6 hr orbital light curves in $r^{\prime}$ or $R$. On timescales of months, PSR J1048+2339 and XMMU J083850.38$-$282756.8 exhibit similar variability of $\approx0.3$ mag on the heated side of the companion star. However, the heating light curve is rarely symmetric, suggesting that the intrabinary shock generated by the pulsar wind is skewed in addition to being variable, or that changing magnetic fields intrinsic to the companion channel the pulsar wind. In additi…
Redbacks (RBs) and black widows (BWs) are two peculiar classes of eclipsing millisecond pulsars (MSPs). The accretion-induced collapse (AIC) of an oxygen/neon/magnesium composition white dwarf to a neutron star has been suggested as one possible formation pathway for those two classes of MSPs. However, it is difficult to produce all known MSPs with the traditional AIC scenario. In this study by using the MESA stellar evolution code, we investigate the detailed pre-AIC evolution of magnetized white dwarf binaries with the magnetic confinement model where the high magnetic field strength of the …
PSR\,J1723$-$2837 is a "redback" millisecond pulsar (MSP) with a low-mass companion in a 14.8\,h orbit. The system's properties closely resemble those of "transitional" MSPs that alternate between spin-down and accretion-powered states. In this paper we report on long-term photometry of the 15.5\,mag companion to the pulsar. We use our data to illustrate that the star experiences sporadic activity, which we attribute to starspots. We also find that the companion is not tidally locked and infer $P_{\rm s}/P_{\rm b}= 0.9974(7)$ for the ratio between the rotational and orbital periods. Finally, w…
We analyse the evolution of close binary systems containing a neutron star that lead to the formation of redback pulsars. Recently there has been some debate on the origin of such systems and the formation mechanism of redbacks may still be considered as an open problem. We show that the operation of a strong evaporation mechanism, starting from the moment when the donor star becomes fully convective (or alternatively since the formation of the neutron star by accretion induced collapse), produces systems with donor masses and orbital periods in the range corresponding to redbacks with donors …
We present a multi-wavelength study of the unassociated Fermi-LAT source, 3FGL J0954.8-3948, which is likely the gamma-ray counterpart of a 9.3-hour binary in the field. With more than 9 years of Pass 8 LAT data, we updated the gamma-ray spectral properties and the LAT localization of the gamma-ray source. While the binary lies outside the cataloged 95% error ellipse, the optimized LAT ellipse is 0.1 degrees closer and encloses the binary. The system is likely spectrally hard in X-rays (photon index ~ 1.4) with orbital modulations detected in optical, UV, and possibly X-rays. A steep spectrum …
We study the present evolutionary status of the binary system containing the 2.66 ms pulsar PSR J1417-4402 in a 5.4 day orbit. This is the pulsar in the original source 3FGL J1417.5-4402, that has undergone a transition from X-ray state to a pulsar state, just like some redbacks did. The system has many characteristics similar to redback pulsars family, but is on a much wider orbit. We show that close binary evolution including irradiation feedback driven by the luminosity due to accretion onto the neutron star component of the pair, and evaporation due to pulsar emission, is able to account f…
PSR J1306--40 is a millisecond pulsar binary with a non-degenerate companion in an unusually long $\sim$1.097 day orbit. We present new optical photometry and spectroscopy of this system, and model these data to constrain fundamental properties of the binary such as the component masses and distance. The optical data imply a minimum neutron star mass of $1.75\pm0.09\,M_{\odot}$ (1-sigma) and a high, nearly edge-on inclination. The light curves suggest a large hot spot on the companion, suggestive of a portion of the pulsar wind being channeled to the stellar surface by the magnetic field of th…
The GMRT High-Resolution Southern Sky Survey for pulsars and transients -- VII: Timing of Spider MSP J1242-4712, A Bridge Between Redback and Black Widow Pulsars
The wealth of detections of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in $γ$-rays by {\em Fermi} has spurred searches for these objects among the several unidentified $γ$-ray sources. Interesting targets are a sub-class of binary MSPs, dubbed "Black Widows" (BWs) and "Redbacks" (RBs), which are in orbit with low-mass non-degenerate companions fully or partially ablated by irradiation from the MSP wind. These systems can be easily missed in radio pulsar surveys owing to the eclipse of the radio signal by the intra-binary plasma from the ablated companion star photosphere, making them better targets for multi-…
The Fermi Large Area Telescope gamma-ray source 3FGL J2039.6$-$5618 contains a periodic optical and X-ray source that was predicted to be a "redback" millisecond pulsar (MSP) binary system. However, the conclusive identification required the detection of pulsations from the putative MSP. To better constrain the orbital parameters for a directed search for gamma-ray pulsations, we obtained new optical light curves in 2017 and 2018, which revealed long-term variability from the companion star. The resulting orbital parameter constraints were used to perform a targeted gamma-ray pulsation search …
We consider the X-ray properties of the redback class of eclipsing millisecond pulsars. These are transitional systems between accreting low-mass X-ray binaries and binary millisecond pulsars orbiting white dwarfs, and hence their companions are non-degenerate and nearly Roche-lobe filling. The X-ray luminosity seems to scale with the fraction of the pulsar sky subtended by the companion, suggesting the shock region is not much larger than the companion, which is supported by modeling of the orbital light curves. The typical X-ray photon spectral index is $\sim 1$ and the typical 0.3-8 keV X-r…
We obtained new optical observations of the X-ray source XMMU J083850.38-282756.8, the previously proposed counterpart of the gamma-ray source 3FGL J0838.8-2829. Time-series photometry in the $r'$ band reveals periodic modulation of $\approx1$ magnitude that is characteristic of the heating of the photosphere of a low-mass companion star by a compact object. The measured orbital period is 5.14817$\pm$0.00012 hr. The shape of the light curve is variable, evidently due to the effects of flaring and asymmetric heating. Spectroscopy reveals a companion of type M1 or later, having a radial velocity…
We present the study of multi-wavelength observations of an unidentified Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) source, 4FGL J1910.7-5320, a new candidate redback millisecond pulsar binary. In the 4FGL 95% error region of 4FGL J1910.7-5320, we find a possible binary with a 8.36-hr orbital period from the Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey (CRTS), confirmed by optical spectroscopy using the SOAR telescope. This optical source was recently independently discovered as a redback pulsar by the TRAPUM project, confirming our prediction. We fit the optical spectral energy distributions of 4FGL J1910.7-532…
We present a multi-frequency study of eclipse properties of a transitional redback millisecond pulsar J1227$-$4853 discovered in 2014 with the GMRT. Emission from this pulsar is eclipsed at 607 MHz for about 37% of its orbit around the superior conjunction. We observe eclipse ingress and egress transition which last 12% and 15% of its orbit respectively, resulting in only 36% of the orbit being unaffected by eclipsing material. We report an excess dispersion measure (DM) at eclipse boundaries of 0.079(3) pc cm$^{-3}$ and the corresponding electron column density (N$_e$) is 24.4(8) x 10$^{16}$ …
Eclipsing millisecond pulsars in close ($P_b < 1$~day) binary systems provide a different view of pulsar winds and shocks than do isolated pulsars. Since 2009, the numbers of these systems known in the Galactic field has increased enormously. We have been systematically studying many of these newly discovered systems at multiple wavelengths. Typically, the companion is nearly Roche-lobe filling and heated by the pulsar which drives mass loss from the companion. The pulsar wind shocks with this material just above the surface of the companion. We discuss various observational properties of this…
We present the discovery of a new optical/X-ray source likely associated with the Fermi $γ$-ray source 4FGL J1408.6-2917. Its high-amplitude periodic optical variability, large spectroscopic radial velocity semi-amplitude, evidence for optical emission lines and flaring, and X-ray properties together imply the source is probably a new black widow millisecond pulsar binary. We compile the properties of the 41 confirmed and suspected field black widows, finding a median secondary mass of $0.027\pm0.003\,M_{\odot}$. Considered jointly with the more massive redback millisecond pulsar binaries, we …
We calculate the evolution of close binary systems (CBSs) formed by a neutron star (behaving as a radio pulsar) and a normal donor star, evolving either to helium white dwarf (HeWD) or ultra short orbital period systems. We consider X-ray irradiation feedback and evaporation due to radio pulsar irradiation. We show that irradiation feedback leads to cyclic mass transfer episodes, allowing CBSs to be observed in-between as binary radio pulsars under conditions in which standard, non-irradiated models predict the occurrence of a low mass X-ray binary. This behavior accounts for the existence of …
XSS J12270-4859 is an X-ray binary associated with the Fermi LAT gamma-ray source 1FGL J1227.9-4852. In 2012 December, this source underwent a transition where the X-ray and optical luminosity dropped and the spectral signatures of an accretion disc disappeared. We report the discovery of a 1.69 millisecond pulsar (MSP), PSR J1227-4853, at a dispersion measure of 43.4 pc cm$^{-3}$ associated with this source, using the GMRT at 607 MHz. This demonstrates that, post-transition, the system hosts an active radio MSP. This is the third system after PSR J1023+0038 and PSR J1824-2452I showing evidenc…
Black widows and redbacks are binary systems consisting of a millisecond pulsar in a close binary with a companion having matter driven off of its surface by the pulsar wind. X-rays due to an intra-binary shock have been observed from many of these systems, as well as orbital variations in the optical emission from the companion due to heating and tidal distortion. We have been systematically studying these systems in radio, optical and X-rays. Here we will present an overview of X-ray and optical studies of these systems, including new XMM-Newton and NuStar data obtained from several of them,…
PSR J2129-0429 is a "redback" eclipsing millisecond pulsar binary with an unusually long 15.2 hour orbit. It was discovered by the Green Bank Telescope in a targeted search of unidentified Fermi gamma-ray sources. The pulsar companion is optically bright (mean $m_R = 16.6$ mag), allowing us to construct the longest baseline photometric dataset available for such a system. We present ten years of archival and new photometry of the companion from LINEAR, CRTS, PTF, the Palomar 60-inch, and LCOGT. Radial velocity spectroscopy using the Double-Beam Spectrograph on the Palomar 200-inch indicates th…
We report on radio timing and multiwavelength observations of the 4.66 ms redback pulsar J1048+2339, which was discovered in an Arecibo search targeting the Fermi-LAT source 3FGLJ1048.6+2338. Two years of timing allowed us to derive precise astrometric and orbital parameters for the pulsar. PSR J1048+2339 is in a 6-hour binary, and exhibits radio eclipses over half the orbital period and rapid orbital period variations. The companion has a minimum mass of 0.3 solar masses, and we have identified a $V \sim 20$ variable optical counterpart in data from several surveys. The phasing of its $\sim 1…
We have conducted a systematic survey for the X-ray properties of millisecond pulsars (MSPs). Currently, there are 47 MSPs with confirmed X-ray detections. We have also placed the upper limits for the X-ray emission from the other 36 MSPs by using the archival data. We have normalized their X-ray luminosities $L_{x}$ and their effective photon indices $Γ$ into a homogeneous data set, which enable us to carry out a detailed statistical analysis. Based on our censored sample, we report a relation of $L_{x}\simeq10^{31.05}\left(\dot{E}/10^{35}\right)^{1.31}$ erg/s (2-10 keV) for the MSPs. The inf…
We present multi-wavelength observations of the unassociated gamma-ray source 3FGL J2039.6-5618 detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. The source gamma-ray properties suggest that it is a pulsar, most likely a millisecond pulsar, for which neither radio nor $γ$-ray pulsations have been detected yet. We observed 3FGL J2039.6-5618 with XMM-Newton and discovered several candidate X-ray counterparts within/close to the gamma-ray error box. The brightest of these X-ray sources is variable with a period of 0.2245$\pm$0.0081 d. Its X-ray spectrum can be described by a power law with photon index…
Linares et al. (2016) obtained quasi-simultaneous g', r' and i-band light curves and an absorption line radial velocity curve of the secondary star in the redback system 3FGL J0212.1+5320. The light curves showed two maxima and minima primarily due to the secondary star's ellipsoidal modulation, but with unequal maxima and minima. We fit these light curves and radial velocities with our X-ray binary model including either a dark solar-type star spot or a hot spot due to off-centre heating from an intrabinary shock, to account for the unequal maxima. Both models give a radial velocity semi-ampl…
A large number of new black widow and redback energetic millisecond pulsars with irradiated stellar companions have been discovered through radio searches of unidentified \emph{Fermi} sources. We construct a 3D emission model of these systems to predict the high-energy emission components from particles accelerated to several TeV in the intrabinary shocks, and its predicted modulation at the binary orbital period. Synchrotron emission is expected at X-ray energies and such modulated emission has already been detected by \emph{Chandra} and \emph{XMM-Newton} in some systems. Synchrotron and inve…
We present simultaneous multiwavelength observations of the 4.66 ms redback pulsar PSR J1048+2339. We performed phase-resolved spectroscopy with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) searching for signatures of a residual accretion disk or intra-binary shock emission, constraining the companion radial velocity semi-amplitude ($K_2$), and estimating the neutron star mass ($M_{\rm NS}$). Using the FORS2-VLT intermediate-resolution spectra, we measured a companion velocity of $291 < K_2 < 348$ km s$^{-1}$ and a binary mass ratio of $0.209 < q < 0.250$. Combining our results for $K_2$ and $q$, we constra…
Pulsar binaries, in particular redback systems, provide good sources to study the pulsar wind flow and its interaction with the companion stars. {\it Fermi}-LAT have proposed probable pulsar binary candidates in its catalogs. To identify pulsar binary sources from the catalog, orbital modulation search of binary candidates is an effective way. TESS observes in survey mode for a large part of the sky and thus provide an excellent data set to periodicity search of pulsar binary candidates by observing the flux variation, thought to mainly come from the stellar companion. Using TESS data we look …
