Iron-group elements have a very high number of atomic levels and an overwhelming number of spectral lines. No NLTE model-atmosphere code can cope with these in a classical way. A statistical approach was developed over the last decade to decrease the number of levels and lines to a manageable amount. The Iron Opacity and Interface (IrOnIc) calculates sampled cross-sections and model-atom files as input for model-atmosphere computations. IrOnIc is presently transferred into a parallelized code to reduce the calculation time to a reasonable value. It will be accessible by the public as a service of the German Astrophysical Virtual Observatory.
Models of star formation in the early universe depend on the details of accretion, fragmentation and radiative feedback. Different simulations predict different initial mass functions of the first stars, ranging from predominantly low mass (0.1-10 Msol), to massive (10-100 Msol), or even supermassive (100-1000 Msol). The mass distribution of the first stars should lead to unique chemical imprints on the low-mass second and later generation metal-poor stars still in existence. The chemical composition of SMSS0313-6708, which has the lowest abundances of Ca and Fe of any star known, indicates it…
We present new ultra-metal-poor (UMP) stars parameters with [Fe/H]<-4.0 based on line-by-line non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) abundances using an up-to-date iron model atom with a new recipe for non-elastic hydrogen collision rates. We study the departures from LTE in their atmospheric parameter and show that they can grow up to ~1.0 dex in [Fe/H], 150K in Teff and 0.5 dex in log g toward the lowest metallicities. Accurate NLTE atmospheric stellar parameters, in particular [Fe/H] being signifcantly higher, are the first step to eventually providing full NLTE abundance patterns that …
Ultraviolet over-ionisation of iron atoms in the solar atmosphere leads to deviations in their level populations from the Saha-Boltzmann statistics. This causes their line profiles to form in Non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (NLTE) conditions. While inverting such profiles to determine atmospheric parameters, the NLTE effects are often neglected and deviations from LTE are compensated for by tweaking other quantities. We investigate how the routinely employed LTE inversion of iron lines formed in NLTE under- or over-estimates atmospheric quantities such as temperature (T), line-of-sight vel…
We present accurate methods of abundance determination based on the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for carbon, oxygen, calcium, titanium, and iron in the atmospheres of BAF-type stars. For C I-II, O I, Ca I-II, and Ti I-II, their comprehensive model atoms were described in our previous papers. A fairly complete model atom of Fe I-II is first applied in this study. We determine the NLTE abundances of the nine BAF-type stars with well-determined atmospheric parameters, using high-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio spectral observations in the broad wavelength ra…
We present a new iron abundance analysis of the hyper metal-poor star HE$~$1327-2326, based on Fe II lines detected in its UV spectral range for the first time. In a Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) spectrum, five new Fe II lines could be measured. A Si I line was also detected for the first time. We determine a 1D Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) Fe II abundance of [Fe II/H] = -5.99$\pm$0.25. We also investigate departures from LTE for both Fe I and Fe II lines. Guided by 3D Non-LTE (NLTE) analyses of other well-studied metal-poor stars, we identify potential "residual" 3D effects in HE…
This paper forms the second part of our study on how the neglect of NLTE conditions in the formation of Fe I 6301.5 A and the 6302.5 A lines influences the atmosphere obtained by inverting their profiles in LTE. The main cause of NLTE effects is the line opacity deficit due to the excess ionization of the Fe I atoms by the UV photons in the Sun. In the first paper, the above photospheric lines were assumed to have formed in 1DNLTE and the effects of horizontal radiation transfer (RT) were neglected. In the present paper, the iron lines are computed in 3DNLTE. We investigate the influence of ho…
Our ability to model the shapes and strengths of iron lines in the solar spectrum is a critical test of the accuracy of the solar iron abundance, which sets the absolute zero-point of all stellar metallicities. We use an extensive 463-level Fe atom with new photoionisation cross-sections for FeI as well as quantum mechanical calculations of collisional excitation and charge transfer with neutral hydrogen; the latter effectively remove a free parameter that has hampered all previous line formation studies of Fe in non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE). For the first time, we use realistic …
We have developed a model atom for Cu with which we perform statistical equilibrium computations that allow us to compute the line formation of Cu I lines in stellar atmospheres without assuming Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE). We validate this model atom by reproducing the observed line profiles of the Sun, Procyon and eleven metal-poor stars. Our sample of stars includes both dwarfs and giants. Over a wide range of stellar parameters we obtain excellent agreement among different Cu I lines. The eleven metal-poor stars have iron abundances in the range -4.2 <= [Fe/H] <= -1.4, the weight…
Non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) line formation for Ca I-Ca II, Ti I-Ti II, and Fe I-Fe II is considered in model atmospheres of giant stars with an effective temperature of 4000 K $\le$ Teff $\le$ 5000 K and a metal abundance of -4 $\le$ [Fe/H] $\le$ 0. The departures from LTE are analyzed depending on atmospheric parameters. We present the non-LTE abundance corrections for 28 lines of Ca I, 42 lines of Ti I, 54 lines of Ti II, and 262 lines of Fe I and a three-dimensional interpolation code to obtain the non-LTE correction online (http://spectrum.inasan.ru/nLTE/) for an individu…
An analysis of the CH molecule in non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) is performed for the physical conditions of cool stellar atmospheres typical of red giants (log g = 2.0, Teff = 4500 K) and the Sun. The aim of the present work is to explore whether the G-band of the CH molecule, which is commonly used in abundance diagnostics of Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars, is sensitive to NLTE effects. LTE and NLTE theoretical spectra are computed with the MULTI code. We use one-dimensional (1D) LTE hydrostatic MARCS model atmospheres with parameters representing eleven red giant stars …

This thesis is aimed at clarifying one of the least studied phases of stellar evolution: the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). Recent results obtained for Galactic globular clusters (GCs) suggest that the AGB stage may contain crucial information about the evolutionary history of exotic stars (Beccari et al. 2006) and multiple-populations (Campbell et al. 2013) in the parent cluster. The thesis presents the analysis of a large sample of high-resolution spectra of AGB stars in four Galactic GCs, acquired at the Very Large Telescope (ESO) and the 2.2 meter telescope (MPG). The obtained results prov…

Iron plays a crucial role in studies of late-type stars. In their atmospheres, Fe I is the minority species and its lines are subject to the departures from LTE. In contrast, one believes that LTE is a realistic approximation for Fe II lines. The main source of the uncertainties in the non-LTE (NLTE) calculations for cool atmospheres is a treatment of inelastic collisions with hydrogen atoms. We investigate the effect of Fe I + H I and Fe II + H I collisions and their different treatment on the Fe I/Fe II ionisation equilibrium and Fe abundance determinations for Galactic halo benchmark stars …
Using standard 1D-LTE model atmosphere analysis, we provide an in-depth investigation of iron abundance as derived from neutral and singly ionization iron lines (Fe {\scriptsize{I, II}}) in nearby star clusters. Specifically, we replicate the discrepancy regarding $Δ$[Fe/H], wherein the difference of Fe {\scriptsize{II}} - Fe {\scriptsize{I}} increases for stars of the same cluster with decreasing $T_\mathrm{eff}$, reaching an astonishing 1.0 dex at $T_\mathrm{eff}$ $\thicksim$ 4000 K. Previous studies have investigated this anomaly in the Pleiades and Hyades clusters with no concrete solution…
We study the abundances of Na, Mg, and K in the atmospheres of 32 RGB stars in the Galactic globular cluster (GGC) 47 Tuc, with the goal to investigate the possible existence of Na-K and Mg-K correlations/anti-correlations, similar to those that were recently discovered in two other GGCs, NGC 2419 and 2808. The abundances of K, Na, and Mg were determined using high-resolution 2df spectra obtained with the AAT. The 1D NLTE abundance estimates were obtained using 1D hydrostatic ATLAS9 model atmospheres and spectral line profiles synthesized with the MULTI package. We also used 3D hydrodynamical …
We obtained optical and near-infrared spectra of Type$\,$Ia supernovae (SNe$\,$Ia) at epochs ranging from 224 to 496 days after the explosion. The spectra show emission lines from forbidden transitions of singly ionised iron and cobalt atoms. We used non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) modelling of the first and second ionisation stages of iron, nickel, and cobalt to fit the spectra using a sampling algorithm allowing us to probe a broad parameter space. We derive velocity shifts, line widths, and abundance ratios for iron and cobalt. The measured line widths and velocity shifts of the …
We determined abundances of Mg and K in the atmospheres of 53 (Mg) and 75 (K) turn-off (TO) stars of the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tuc. The obtained abundances, together with those of Li, O, and Na, were used to search for possible relations between the abundances of K and other light elements, Li, O, Na, and Mg, as well as the connections between the chemical composition of TO stars and their kinematical properties. Abundances of Mg and K were determined using archival VLT FLAMES/GIRAFFE spectra, in combination with the 1D NLTE spectral synthesis methodology. Spectral line profiles were co…
Accurate atomic data is an essential ingredient for the calculation of reliable non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) model atmospheres that are mandatory for the spectral analysis of hot stars. We aim to search for and identify for the first time spectral lines of copper (atomic number Z = 29) and indium (Z = 49) in hot white dwarf (WD) stars and to subsequently determine their photospheric abundances. Oscillator strengths of Cu IV - VII were calculated to include radiative and collisional bound-bound transitions of Cu in our NLTE model-atmosphere calculations. Oscillator strengths of In…
