Two-stream instability requires, essentially, two things to operate: a relative flow between two fluids and some type of interaction between them. In this letter we provide the first demonstration that this mechanism may be active in a cosmological context. Building on a recently developed formalism for cosmological models with two, interpenetrating fluids with a relative flow between them, we show that two-stream instability may be triggered during the transition from one fluid domination to the other. We also demonstrate that the cosmological expansion eventually shuts down the instability by driving to zero the relativeflow and the coupling between the two fluids.
The two-stream instability has been mooted as an explanation for a range of astrophysical applications from GRBs and pulsar glitches to cosmology. Using the first nonlinear numerical simulations of relativistic multi-species hydrodynamics we show that the onset and initial growth of the instability is very well described by linear perturbation theory. In the later stages the linear and nonlinear description match only qualitatively, and the instability does not saturate even in the nonlinear case by purely ideal hydrodynamic effects.
In a subclass of scalar-tensor theories, it has been shown that standard general relativity solutions of neutron stars and black holes with trivial scalar field profiles are unstable. Such an instability leads to solutions which are different from those of general relativity and have non-trivial scalar field profiles, in a process called scalarization. In the present work we focus on scalarization due to a non-minimal coupling of the scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet curvature invariant. The coupling acts as a tachyonic mass for the scalar mode, thus leading to the instability of general relati…
We present here how the gravothermal or Antonov's instability, which was originally formulated in the microcanonical ensemble, is modified in the presence of a cosmological constant and in the canonical ensemble. In contrast to the microcanonical ensemble, there is a minimum, and not maximum, radius for which metastable states exist. In addition this critical radius is decreasing, and not increasing, with increasing cosmological constant. The minimum temperature for which metastable states exist is decreasing with increasing cosmological constant, while above some positive value of the cosmolo…
For the current central values of the Higgs and top masses, the Standard Model Higgs potential develops an instability at a scale of the order of $10^{11}$ GeV. We show that a cosmological signature of such instability could be dark matter in the form of primordial black holes seeded by Higgs fluctuations during inflation. The existence of dark matter might not require physics beyond the Standard Model.
A mathematical model is formulated for the evolution of plane perturbations in a cosmological two-component statistical system of completely degenerate scalarly charged fermions with an asymmetric scalar Higgs interaction. A complete closed system of differential equations describing the unperturbed state of a homogeneous and isotropic system and a system of self-consistent evolution equations of small perturbations are constructed.
We study the (local) propagation of plane waves in a relativistic, non-dissipative, two-fluid system, allowing for a relative velocity in the "background" configuration. The main aim is to analyze relativistic two-stream instability. This instability requires a relative flow -- either across an interface or when two or more fluids interpenetrate -- and can be triggered, for example, when one-dimensional plane-waves appear to be left-moving with respect to one fluid, but right-moving with respect to another. The dispersion relation of the two-fluid system is studied for different two-fluid equa…
Recently, a new interesting instability of a charged scalar field in the Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter background has been found (arXiv:1405.4931v2) through the time-domain integration of the perturbation equation. We investigate further properties of this instability, confirm its existence by concordant frequency-domain and time-domain calculations and show that it occurs at however small value of the coupling eQ, where e and Q are charges of a scalar field and black hole respectively. We also investigate the parametric region of instability and show that the critical values of eQ at which the…
The dynamical instability of relativistic polytropic spheres, embedded in a spacetime with a repulsive cosmological constant, is studied in the framework of general relativity. We apply the methods used in our preceding paper to study the trapping polytropic spheres with $Λ= 0$, namely, the critical point method and the infinitesimal and adiabatic radial perturbations method developed by Chandrasekhar. We compute numerically the critical adiabatic index, as a function of the parameter $σ= p_{\mathrm{c}}/(ρ_{\mathrm{c}} c^2)$, for several values of the cosmological parameter $λ$ giving the rati…
Based on the previously formulated mathematical model of a statistical system with scalar interaction of fermions and the theory of gravitational-scalar instability of a cosmological model based on a two-component statistical system of scalar-charged degenerate fermions, a numerical model of the cosmological evolution of gravitational-scalar perturbations is constructed and specific examples of the development of instability are given. Some features of the instability's development are investigated depending on the nature of the behavior of the unperturbed cosmological model. It is shown that …
The Standard Model Higgs potential becomes unstable at large Higgs field values where its quartic coupling becomes negative. While the tunneling lifetime of our current electroweak vacuum is comfortably longer than the age of the universe, quantum fluctuations during inflation might push the Higgs over the barrier, forming patches which might be lethal for our universe. We study the cosmological evolution of such regions and find that, at least in the thin wall approximation, they may be harmless as they collapse due to the backreaction of the Higgs itself. The presence of the Standard Model H…
Two coupled, interpenetrating fluids suffer instabilities beyond certain critical counterflows. For ideal fluids, an energetic instability occurs at the point where a sound mode inverts its direction due to the counterflow, while dynamical instabilities only occur at larger relative velocities. Here we discuss two relativistic fluids, one of which is dissipative. Using linearized hydrodynamics, we show that in this case the energetic instability turns dynamical, i.e., there is an exponentially growing mode, and this exponential growth only occurs in the presence of dissipation. This result is …
