The minimal renormalizable T'xZ2 model (MRT'M) is slightly extended in its Higgs scalar sector such that the abelian part of the flavor symmetry enlarges to (Z2xZ2'). All standard model and original MRT'M states will transform trivially under Z2'. Inspired by the Valencia group's A4 model building, we propose a T' WIMP candidate as the lightest Z2' odd scalar. This extension of the prior MRT'M model maintains the successful predictions for the neutrino mixing matrix and the Cabibbo angle, and provides an attractive candidate for dark matter (Phi_WIMP) with M_Phi \simeq 780 GeV.
We extend the work of Carone, Chaurasia and Vasquez on non-supersymmetric models of flavor based on the double tetrahedral group. Three issues are addressed: (1) the sector of flavor-symmetry-breaking fields is simplified and their potential studied explicitly, (2) a flavorful axion is introduced to solve the strong CP problem and (3) the model is extended to include the neutrino sector. We show how the model can accommodate the strong hierarchies manifest in the charged fermion Yukawa matrices, while predicting a qualitatively different form for the light neutrino mass matrix that is consiste…
We consider a class of flavor models proposed by Aranda, Carone and Lebed, relaxing the assumption of supersymmetry and allowing the flavor scale to float anywhere between the weak and Planck scales. We perform global fits to the charged fermion masses and CKM angles, and consider the dependence of the results on the unknown mass scale of the flavor sector. We find that the typical Yukawa textures in these models provide a good description of the data over a wide range of flavor scales, with a preference for those that approach the lower bounds allowed by flavor-changing-neutral-current constr…
A radiative model of quark and lepton masses utilizing the binary tetrahedral ($T^{\prime}$) flavor symmetry, or horizontal symmetry, is proposed which produces the first two generation of quark masses through their interactions with vector-like quarks that carry charges under an additional $U(1)$. By softly-breaking the $T^{\prime}$ to a residual $Z_4$ through the vector-like quark masses, a CKM mixing angle close to the Cabibbo angle is produced. In order to generate the cobimaximal neutrino oscillation pattern ($θ_{13}\neq0,θ_{23}=π/4,δ_{CP}=\pm π/2$) and protect the horizontal symmetry fro…
Beyond Standard Model physics frequently connects flavor symmetry with a discrete group. If the discrete symmetry arises spontaneously from a gauge theory, one can maintain compatibility with quantum gravity and avoid anomalies. We provide an example of such a model with the Standard Model gauge group extended to $SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times SU(2)_{T'} $ where the binary tetrahedral flavor group $T'$ is embedded in $SU(2)_{T'}$. Quark and lepton masses and mixing angles are fit to data, where lepton mixing angles are shifted from tribimaximal values by the addition of scalar VE…
We construct a flavor model in an anti-SU(5) GUT with a tetrahedral symmetry $A_4$. We choose a basis where $Q_{text{em}}=-\frac13$ quarks and charged leptons are already mass eigenstates. This choice is possible from the $A_4$ symmetry. Then, matter representation $\overline{10}_{-1}^{\rm\, matter}$ contains both a quark doublet and a heavy neutrino $N$, which enables us to use the $A_4$ symmetry to both $Q_{text{em}}=+\frac23$ quark masses and neutrino masses (through the see-saw via $N$). This is made possible because the anti-SU(5) breaking is achieved by the Higgs fields transforming as a…
The "gauged'' Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism of Fukuda, Ibe, Suzuki and Yanagida is implemented in the flavorful axion model of Carone and Merchand. This model of flavor is similar to other successful ones based on the double tetrahedral group, but the flavor symmetry includes a global U(1) factor that leads to the presence of a flavorful axion. Here we gauge that U(1) symmetry and introduce a heavy sector that includes (1) the fermions necessary to cancel anomalies and (2) a second scalar flavon field that spontaneously breaks the U(1) symmetry. The full theory has an accidental U(1)$\times$U(1)…
Modular symmetries naturally combine with traditional flavor symmetries and $\mathcal{CP}$, giving rise to the so-called eclectic flavor symmetry. We apply this scheme to the two-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold, which is equipped with two modular symmetries $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})_T$ and $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})_U$ associated with two moduli: the Kähler modulus $T$ and the complex structure modulus $U$. The resulting finite modular group is $((S_3\times S_3)\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_4)\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ including mirror symmetry (that exchanges $T$ and $U$) and a generalized $\mathcal{CP}$-…
Neutrino flavor conversion studies based on astrophysical environments usually implement neutrino mixings, neutrino interactions with matter and neutrino self-interactions. In anisotropic media, the most general mean-field treatment includes neutrino mass contributions as well, that introduce a coupling between neutrinos and antineutrinos termed helicity or spin coherence. We discuss resonance conditions for helicity coherence for Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. We explore the role of these mean-field contributions on flavor evolution in the context of a binary neutron star merger remnant. We fi…
We study the neutrino flavor evolution in the neutrino-driven wind from a binary neutron star merger remnant consisting of a massive neutron star surrounded by an accretion disk. With the neutrino emission characteristics and the hydrodynamical profile of the remnant consistently extracted from a three-dimensional simulation, we compute the flavor evolution by taking into account neutrino coherent forward scattering off ordinary matter and neutrinos themselves. We employ a "single-trajectory" approach to investigate the dependence of the flavor evolution on the neutrino emission location and a…
Fast pairwise conversions of neutrinos are predicted to be ubiquitous in neutron star merger remnants with potentially major implications on the nucleosynthesis of the elements heavier than iron. We present the first sophisticated numerical solution of the neutrino flavor evolution above the remnant disk within a (2+1+1) dimensional setup: two spatial coordinates, one angular variable, and time. We look for a steady-state flavor configuration above the remnant disk. Albeit the linear stability analysis predicts flavor instabilities at any location above the remnant disk, our simulations in the…
The existence of eV-mass sterile neutrinos is not ruled out because of persistent experimental anomalies. Upcoming multi-messenger detections of neutron-star merger remnants could provide indirect constraints on the existence of these particles. We explore the active-sterile flavor conversion phenomenology in a two-flavor scenario (1 active + 1 sterile species) as a function of the sterile neutrino mixing parameters, neutrino emission angle from the accretion torus, and temporal evolution of the merger remnant. The torus geometry and the neutron richness of the remnant are responsible for the …
The massive neutron star (NS) or black hole (BH) accretion disk resulting from NS--NS or NS--BH mergers is dense in neutrinos. We present the first study on the role of angular distributions in the neutrino flavor conversion above the remnant disk. In particular, we focus on "fast" pairwise conversions whose rate depends on the local angular intensity of the electron lepton number carried by neutrinos. Because of the emission geometry and the flux density of $\barν_e$ being larger than that of $ν_e$, fast conversions prove to be a generic phenomenon in NS--NS and NS--BH mergers for physically …
A dense gas of neutrinos and antineutrinos can undergo fast pairwise conversions near the decoupling regions of core-collapse supernovae and in compact binary neutron star mergers. The flavor dependent neutrino heating can play a role in sustaining convection inside the hot and dense matter. In this paper, we study the unexplored effect of the bulk velocity of matter on fast pairwise conversions and demonstrate that depending on the direction and the magnitude of the bulk velocity, neutrino flavor conversions could be significantly enhanced or suppressed. The bulk velocity of matter, which is …
The flavor conversion of a neutrino usually occurs at densities $\lesssim G_F^{-1} ω$, whether in the ordinary matter or the neutrino medium, and on time/distance scales of order $ω^{-1}$, where $G_F$ is the Fermi weak coupling constant and $ω$ is the vacuum oscillation frequency of the neutrino. In 2005 Sawyer and more recently both he and other groups have shown that neutrino flavor conversions can occur on scales much shorter than $ω^{-1}$ in a very dense, anisotropic neutrino gas such as that in a core-collapse supernova or a binary neutron star merger. It has also been suggested that the …
