The phenomenological analysis of fully spin-polarized quantum Hall systems, based on holomorphic modular symmetries of the renormalization group (RG) flow, is generalized to more complicated situations where the spin or other "flavors" of charge carriers are relevant, and where the symmetry is different. We make the simplest possible ansatz for a family of RG potentials that can interpolate between these symmetries. It is parametrized by a single number $a$ and we show that this suffices to account for almost all scaling data obtained to date. The potential is always symmetric under the main congruence group at level two, and when $a$ takes certain values this symmetry is enhanced to one of the maximal subgroups of the modular group. We compute the covariant RG $β$-function, which is a holomorphic vector field derived from the potential, and compare the geometry of this gradient flow with available temperature driven scaling data. The value of $a$ is determined from experiment by finding the location of a quantum critical point, i.e., an unstable zero of the $β$-function given by a saddle point of the RG potential. The data are consistent with $a \in \mathbb{R}$, which together with the symmetry leads to a generalized semi-circle law.
We derive and calculate thermal transport coefficient for a quantum Hall system in the linear response regime, and show that they are exponentially small in the bulk, in contrast to the quantized value of the charge Hall coefficient, thus violating Wiedemann-Franz law. This corroborates earlier reports about the essential difference between the charge and thermal quantum Hall effect, that originates from the different behavior of the corresponding $U(1)$ and gravitational anomalies. We explicitly calculate the bulk currents when a temperature profile is applied within the bulk, and show that t…
The edge states in the fractional quantum Hall systems at filling factor $ν=1/3$ are studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. It is shown that the density oscillation induced by the local boundary condition at the edge is characterized by the wave number of the minimum magnetoroton excitation, and this structure is partially reconstructed with the change in the confinement potential shape. In particular, the $ν=1$ counterpropagating edge channel appears with the change in the chemical potential, which is consistent with recent experiments on heat transport. The stability of …
Parafermions are non-Abelian anyons which generalize Majorana fermions and hold great promise for topological quantum computation. We study the braiding of $\mathbb{Z}_{2n}$ parafermions which have been predicted to emerge as bound states in fractional quantum Hall systems at filling factor $ν= 1/n$ ($n$ odd). Using a combination of bosonization and refermionization, we calculate the energy splitting as a function of distance and chemical potential for a pair of parafermions separated by a gapped region. Braiding of parafermions in quantum Hall edge states can be implemented by repeated fusion…
We study energy gaps of the $ν=7/2$ and $ν=5/2$ fractional quantum Hall states in a series of two-dimensional electron gases containing alloy disorder. We found that gaps at these two filling factors have the same suppression rate with alloy disorder. The dimensionless intrinsic gaps in our alloy samples obtained from the model proposed by Morf and d'Ambrumenil are consistent with numerical results, but are larger than those obtained from experiments on pristine samples published in the literature. The disorder broadening parameter has large uncertainties. However, a modified analysis relying …
We show that in quantum Hall systems at half-filling, edge potentials alone can drive transitions between the Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian topological phases. We conjecture this is true in realistic systems even in the presence of weak bulk interactions that break the particle-hole symmetry. The strong effects of edge potentials could be understood from different topological shifts of competing phases, manifested on the disk geometry as the variation of orbital numbers at fixed number of particles. In particular, we show analytically particle-hole conjugation of Hamiltonians on the disk is equiv…
We compute the Hall viscosity and conductivity of non-relativistic two-dimensional chiral superconductors, where fermions pair due to a short-range attractive potential, e.g. $p+\mathrm{i}p$ pairing, and interact via a long-range repulsive Coulomb force. For a logarithmic Coulomb potential, the Hall viscosity tensor contains a contribution that is singular at low momentum, which encodes corrections to pressure induced by an external shear strain. Due to this contribution, the Hall viscosity cannot be extracted from the Hall conductivity in spite of Galilean symmetry. For mixed-dimensional chir…

A unique property of a dynamically generated quantum spin Hall state are Goldstone modes that correspond to the long-wavelength fluctuations of the spin-orbit coupling order parameter whose topological Skyrmion excitations carry charge 2$e$. Within the model considered here, upon varying the chemical potential, we observe two transitions: An s-wave superconducting order parameter develops at a critical chemical potential $μ_{c1}$, corresponding to the excitation gap of pairs of fermions, and at $μ_{c2}$ the SO(3) order parameter of the quantum spin Hall state vanishes. Using negative-sign-free…
The quantum Hall (QH) effect, a topologically non-trivial quantum phase, expanded and brought into focus the concept of topological order in physics. The topologically protected quantum Hall edge states are of crucial importance to the QH effect but have been measured with limited success. The QH edge states in graphene take on an even richer role as graphene is distinguished by its four-fold degenerate zero energy Landau level (zLL), where the symmetry is broken by electron interactions on top of lattice-scale potentials but has eluded spatial measurements. In this report, we map the quantum …
