We study a layer of grains atop a plate which oscillates sinusoidally in the direction of gravity, using three-dimensional, time-dependent numerical solutions of continuum equations to Navier-Stokes order as well as hard-sphere molecular dynamics simulations. For high accelerational amplitudes of the plate, the layer exhibits a steady-state "density inversion" in which a high-density portion of the layer is supported by a lower-density portion. At low accelerational amplitudes, the layer exhibits oscillatory time dependence that is strongly correlated to the motion of the plate. We show that continuum simulations yield results consistent with molecular dynamics results in both regimes.
We study interactions between shocks and standing-wave patterns in vertically oscillated layers of granular media using three-dimensional, time-dependent numerical solutions of continuum equations to Navier-Stokes order. We simulate a layer of grains atop a plate that oscillates sinusoidally in the direction of gravity. Standing waves form stripe patterns when the accelerational amplitude of the plate's oscillation exceeds a critical value. Shocks also form with each collision between the layer and the plate; we show that pressure gradients formed by these shocks cause the flow to reverse dire…
We study the onset of patterns in vertically oscillated layers of frictionless dissipative particles. Using both numerical solutions of continuum equations to Navier-Stokes order and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we find that standing waves form stripe patterns above a critical acceleration of the cell. Changing the frequency of oscillation of the cell changes the wavelength of the resulting pattern; MD and continuum simulations both yield wavelengths in accord with previous experimental results. The value of the critical acceleration for ordered standing waves is approximately 10% high…
Nonlinear relaxation dynamics of a vertically-vibrated granular pile is experimentally studied. In the experiment, the flux and slope on the relaxing pile are measured by using a high-speed laser profiler. The relation of these quantities can be modeled by the nonlinear transport law assuming the uniform vibro-fluidization of an entire pile. The fitting parameter in this model is only the relaxation efficiency, which characterizes the energy conversion rate from vertical vibration into horizontal transport. We demonstrate that this value is a constant independent of experimental conditions. Th…
We report new patterns, consisting of coexistence of sub-harmonic/harmonic and asynchronous states [for example, a granular gas co-existing with (i) bouncing bed, (ii) undulatory subharmonic waves and (iii) Leidenfrost-like state], in experiments on vertically vibrated binary granular mixtures in a Heleshaw-type cell. Most experiments have been carried out with equimolar binary mixtures of glass and steel balls of same diameter by varying the total layer-height ($F$) for a range of shaking acceleration ($Γ$). All patterns as well as the related phase-diagram in the ($Γ, F$)-plane have been rep…
The author investigates the onset of patterns in vertically oscillated layers of dissipative particles using numerical solutions of continuum equations to Navier-Stokes order. Above a critical accelerational amplitude of the cell, standing waves form stripe patterns which oscillate subharmonically with respect to the cell. Continuum simulations neglecting interparticle friction yield pattern wavelengths consistent with experiments using frictional particles. However, the critical acceleration for standing wave formation is approximately 10% lower in continuum simulations without added noise th…
We experimentally study the velocity scaling of granular convection which is a possible mechanism of the regolith migration on the surface of small asteroids. In order to evaluate the contribution of granular convection to the regolith migration, the velocity of granular convection under the microgravity condition has to be revealed. Although it is hard to control the gravitational acceleration in laboratory experiments, scaling relations involving the gravitational effect can be evaluated by systematic experiments. Therefore, we perform such a systematic experiment of the vibration-induced gr…
We investigate hydrodynamic fluctuations in a 2D granular fluid excited by a vibrating base and in the presence of gravity, focusing on the transverse velocity modes. Since the system is inhomogeneous, we measure fluctuations in horizontal layers whose width is smaller than the characteristic hydrodynamic lengths: they can be considered as almost-homogeneous subsystems. The large time decay of autocorrelations of modes is exponential and compatible with vorticity diffusion due to shear viscosity, as in equilibrium fluids. The velocity structure factor, which strongly deviates from the equilibr…
When a rod is vertically withdrawn from a granular layer, oblique force chains can be developed by effective shearing. In this study, the force-chain structure in a rod-withdrawn granular layer was experimentally investigated using a photoelastic technique. The rod is vertically withdrawn from a two-dimensional granular layer consisting of bidisperse photoelastic disks. During the withdrawal, the development process of force chains is visualized by the photoelastic effect. By systematic analysis of photoelastic images, force chain structures newly developed by the rod withdrawing are identifie…
Pattern formation of a thin layer of vertically agitated wet granular matter is investigated experimentally. Rotating spirals with three arms, which correspond to the kinks between regions with different colliding phases, are the dominating pattern. This preferred number of arms corresponds to period tripling of the agitated granular layer, unlike predominantly subharmonic Faraday crispations in dry granular matter. The chirality of the spatiotemporal pattern corresponds to the rotation direction of the spirals.
Simulation of a system consisted of free particle bouncing on a vertically vibrated based is performed. Two different states, which are steady and unsteady energy transfer state are found. The vibrating based is hold at constant vibration frequency $f = 0.1$ as the vibration amplitude $A$ varied. Sinusoidal form is used. Granular temperature $T_g$ as function of based velocity and coefficient of restitution is used but shown no role in determining energy transfer state of the system. Peak of free particle trajectory $x_m$ around value 20 seperate region of the two states.
We investigate the conditions leading to large drag force fluctuations in granular materials. The study is based on a set of experimental drag tests, which involve pulling a plate vertically through a cohesionless granular material. In agreement with previous observations, drag force exhibits significant and sudden drops -up to 60%- when the plate is pulled out at low velocities. We further find that this instability vanishes at higher pullout velocities and near the surface. We empirically characterise the frequency and amplitude of these fluctuations and find that these properties are not co…
Like in liquids, objects moving in granular materials experience a drag force. We investigate here whether and how the object acceleration affect this drag force. The study is based on simulations of a canonical drag test, which involves vertically uplifting a plate through a granular packing with a prescribed acceleration pattern. Depending on the plate size, plate depth and acceleration pattern, results evidence a rate-independent regime and an inertial regime where the object acceleration strongly enhances the drag force. We introduce an elasto-inertial drag force model that captures the me…
We investigate the onset of the wall-induced convection in vertically vibrated granular matter by means of experiments and two-dimensional computer simulations. In both simulations and experiments we find that the wall-induced convection occurs inside the bouncing bed region of the parameter space in which the granular bed behaves like a bouncing ball. A good agreement between experiments and simulations is found for the peak vibration acceleration at which convection starts. By comparing the results of simulations initialised with and without defects, we find that the onset of convection occu…
Because of the huge commercial importance of granular systems, the second-most used material in industry after water, intersecting the industry in multiple trades, like pharmacy and agriculture, fundamental research on grain-like materials has received an increasing amount of attention in the last decades. In photonics, the applications of granular materials have been only marginally investigated. We report the first phase-diagram of a granular as obtained by laser emission. The dynamics of vertically-oscillated granular in a liquid solution in a three-dimensional container is investigated by …
The orientational order in vertically agitated granular rod monolayers is investigated experimentally and compared quantitatively with equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory. At sufficiently high number density, short rods form a tetratic state and long rods form a uniaxial nematic state. The length-to-width ratio at which the order changes from tetratic to uniaxial is around $7.3$ in both experiments and simulations. This agreement illustrates the universal aspects of the ordering of rod-shaped particles across equilibrium and nonequilibrium systems. Moreover, the a…
Pattern formation of a thin layer of vertically agitated wet granular matter is investigated experimentally. Due to the strong cohesion arising from the capillary bridges formed between adjacent particles, agitated wet granular matter exhibits a different scenario compared with cohesionless dry particles. Rotating spirals with three arms, which correspond to the kinks between regions with different colliding phases with the vibrating plate, have been found to be the dominating pattern. From both top view snapshots and laser profilometry methods, the rotation frequency of the spiral arms is cha…
We investigate the drag forces acting on large objects moving through a granular packing immersed in water. In this aim, we conducted uplift experiments involving pulling out horizontal plates at a prescribed velocity vertically. During these tests, we observed that the drag force reaches to peak at a low displacement and then decays. Results show that the peak drag force strongly increases with the velocity and depends on the plate size and grain diameter. We identify empirical scaling laws for these properties and introduce a Darcy-flow mechanism that can explain them. Furthermore, we conduc…
Unlike dry granular materials, a dense granular suspension like cornstarch in water can strongly resist extensional flows. At low extension rates, such a suspension behaves like a viscous liquid, but rapid extension results in a response where stresses far exceed the predictions of lubrication hydrodynamics and capillarity. To understand this remarkable mechanical response, we experimentally measure the normal force imparted by a large bulk of the suspension on a plate moving vertically upward at a controlled velocity. We observe that above a velocity threshold, the peak force increases by ord…
Liquid-crystalline ordering in vertically vibrated granular monolayers confined in annuli of different sizes is examined. The annuli consist of circular cavities with a central circular obstruction. In the absence of the central obstruction cylinders of low aspect-ratio exhibit tetratic order, except for the existence of four defects which restore the symmetry broken by the circular confinement. This behaviour is demanded by topology in systems with strong anchoring properties at the surface. By contrast, topology dictates that the annular geometry is compatible with a distorted tetratic phase…
A vertically shaken granular medium hosts a blade rotating around a fixed vertical axis, which acts as a mesorheological probe. At high densities, independently from the shaking intensity, the blade's dynamics show strong caging effects, marked by transient sub-diffusion and a maximum in the velocity power density spectrum (vpds), at a resonant frequency $\sim 10$ Hz. Interpreting the data through a diffusing harmonic cage model allows us to retrieve the elastic constant of the granular medium and its collective diffusion coefficient. For high frequencies $f$, a tail $\sim 1/f$ in the vpds rev…
The behaviour of a vertically vibrated granular bed is reminiscent of a liquid in that it exhibits many phenomena such as convection and Faraday-like surface waves. However, when the lateral dimensions of the bed are confined such that a quasi-one-dimensional geometry is formed, the only phenomena that remain are bouncing bed and the granular Leidenfrost effect. This permits the observation of the granular Leidenfrost state for a wide range of energy injection parameters, and more specifically allows for a thorough characterisation of the low-frequency oscillation (LFO) that is present in this…
We simulate vertically shaken dense granular packings with horizontal periodic boundary conditions. A coordinated translating motion of the whole medium emerges when the horizontal symmetry is broken by disorder or defects in the packing and the shaking is weak enough to conserve the structure. We argue that such a drift originates in the interplay between structural symmetry breaking and frictional forces transmitted by the vibrating plate. A non-linear ratchet model with stick-slips reproduces many faces of the phenomenon. The collective motion discussed here underlies phenomena observed rec…
Grains inside a vertically vibrated box undergo a transition from a density inverted and horizontally homogeneous state, referred to as the granular Leidenfrost state, to a buoyancy-driven convective state. We perform a simulational study of the precursors of such a transition, and quantify their dynamics as the bed of grains is progressively fluidized. The transition is preceded by transient convective states, which increase their correlation time as the transition point is approached. Increasingly correlated convective flows lead to density fluctuations, as quantified by the structure factor…
Granular flow dynamics on a vertically vibrated pile is studied by means of both laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. As already revealed, the depth-averaged velocity of a fully-fluidized granular pile under strong vibration, which is measured by a high-speed laser profiler in the experiment, can be explained by the nonlinear diffusion transport model proposed by our previous paper (Tsuji et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 128001 (2018)). In this paper, we report that a similar transport model can be applied to the relation between the surface velocity and slope in the experiment. These…
Velocity and density structure factors are measured over a hydrodynamic range of scales in a horizontal quasi-2d fluidized granular experiment, with packing fractions $ϕ\in[10%,40%]$. The fluidization is realized by vertically vibrating a rough plate, on top of which particles perform a Brownian-like horizontal motion in addition to inelastic collisions. On one hand, the density structure factor is equal to that of elastic hard spheres, except in the limit of large length-scales, as it occurs in the presence of an effective interaction. On the other hand, the velocity field shows a more comple…
We investigate axial segregation of binary mixtures in a laterally shaken horizontal channel formed by ratchet-like sidewalls that appear as concatenated trapeziums when not offset axially. Grain mixtures shaken in such a channel are observed to segregate in two stages: they first separate rapidly into two vertically arranged layers and, then, these layers move axially in opposite directions, segregating the two species. Here, we conduct experiments to study the influence on the segregation process of various parameters: the size ratio of grains, the shaking frequency and the channel's geometr…
