The Fe1+y Te1-x Sex compounds belong to the family of iron-based high temperature superconductors, in which superconductivity often appears upon doping antiferromagnetic parent compounds. Unlike other Fe-based superconductors (in which the antiferromagnetic order is at the Fermi surface nesting wavevector [1/2,1/2,1]), the Fe1+y Te1-x Sex parent compound Fe1+y Te orders at a different wavevector, [1/2, 0, 1/2]. Furthermore, the ordering wavevector depends on y, the occupation of interstitial sites with excess iron; the origin of this behavior is controversial. Using inelastic neutron scattering on Fe1.08 Te, we find incommensurate magnetic fluctuations above the Neel temperature, even though the ordered state is bicollinear and commensurate with gapped spin waves. This behavior can be understood in terms of a competition between commensurate and incommensurate order, which we explain as a lock-in transition caused by the magnetic anisotropy.
We study the evolution of the d-wave neutron cross-section with variable frequency ωand fixed T (below and above Tc) in two different cuprate families. The evolution from incommensurate to commensurate to incommensurate peaks is rather generic within an RPA-like scheme. This behavior seems to be in reasonable accord with experiments, and may help distinguish between this and the "stripe" scenario.
We study the evolution of the neutron cross-section with variable frequency $ω$ and fixed $T$ below $T_c$ in two different cuprate families. Our calculations, which predominantly probe the role of d-wave pairing, lead to generic features, independent of Fermi surface shapes. Among our findings, reasonably consistent with experiment, are (i) for $ω$ near the gap energy $Δ$, both optimal {LaSrCuO} and slightly underdoped YBCO exhibit (comparably) incommensurate peaks (ii) peak sharpening below $T_c$ is seen in {LaSrCuO}, (iii) quite generically, a frequency evolution from incommensurate to comme…
We report results of 23Na and 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on a self-flux grown high-quality single crystal of stoichiometric NaFeAs. The NMR spectra revealed a tetragonal to twinned-orthorhombic structural phase transition at T_O = 57 K and an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition at T_AF = 45 K. The divergent behavior of nuclear relaxation rate near T_AF shows significant anisotropy, indicating that the critical slowing down of stripe-type AF fluctuations are strongly anisotropic in spin space. The NMR spectra at low enough temperatures consist of sharp peaks showing a comme…
We present an interpretation of the recent neutron data on the commensurate and incommensurate spin fluctuations found in YBa_2d$Cu_3O_{6+y} based on a special configuration of the electronic dispersion and intervention from the d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconducting phase. The observed switch over between the commensurate and incommensurate fluctuation spectra at the change of frequency or temperature is naturally accounted within this scenario.
We report on the direct observation of vortex states confined in equilateral and isosceles triangular dots of weak pinning amorphous superconducting thin films with a scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscope. The observed images illustrate not only pieces of a triangular vortex lattice as commensurate vortex states, but also incommensurate vortex states including metastable ones. We comparatively analyze vortex configurations found in different sample geometries and discuss the symmetry and stability of commensurate and incommensurate vortex configurations against deform…
As a function of applied field, we find a rich variety of ordered and partially-ordered vortex lattice configurations in systems with square or triangular arrays of pinning sites. We present formulas that predict the matching fields at which commensurate vortex configurations occur and the vortex lattice orientation with respect to the pinning lattice. Our results are in excellent agreement with recent imaging experiments on square pinning arrays [K. Harada et al., Science 274, 1167 (1996)].
We examine the melting of commensurate and incommensurate vortex lattices interacting with square pinning arrays through the use of numerical simulations. For weak pinning strength in the commensurate case we observe an order-order transition from a commensurate square vortex lattice to a triangular floating solid phase as a function of temperature. This floating solid phase melts into a liquid at still higher temperature. For strong pinning there is only a single transition from the square pinned lattice to the liquid state. For strong pinning in the incommensurate case, we observe a multi-st…
Elastic neutron diffraction measurements were performed on the quasi-two dimensional heavy fermion system CeRh1-xCoxIn5, ranging from an incommensurate antiferromagnet for low x to an unconventional superconductor on the Co-rich end of the phase diagram. We found that the superconductivity competes with the incommensurate antiferromagnetic (AFM) order characterized by qI=(1/2, 1/2, delta) with delta=0.298, while it coexists with the commensurate AFM order with qc=(1/2, 1/2, 1/2). This is in sharp contrast to the CeRh1-xIrxIn5 system, where both the commensurate and incommensurate magnetic orde…
When sufficient numbers of holes are introduced into the two-dimensional CuO2 square lattice, dynamic magnetic correlations become incommensurate with underlying lattice in all previously investigated La_{2-x}A_xCu_{1-z}B_zO_{4+y} (A=Sr or Nd, B=Zn) including high T_C superconductors and insulators, and in bilayered superconducting YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6} and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8. Magnetic correlations also become incommensurate in structurally related La_2NiO_4 when doped with Sr or O. We report an exception to this so-far well established experimental "rule" in La_2Cu_{1-z}Li_{z}O_4 in which magnetic …
The influence of a uniform external magnetic field on the dynamical spin response of cuprate superconductors in the superconducting state is studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. It is shown that the magnetic scattering around low and intermediate energies is dramatically changed with a modest external magnetic field. With increasing the external magnetic field, although the incommensurate magnetic scattering from both low and high energies is rather robust, the commensurate magnetic resonance scattering peak is broadened. The part of the spin excitation dispers…
Neutron diffraction studies of Ba(Fe[1-x]Co[x])2As2 reveal that commensurate antiferromagnetic order gives way to incommensurate magnetic order for Co compositions between 0.056 < x < 0.06. The incommensurability has the form of a small transverse splitting (0, +-e, 0) from the nominal commensurate antiferromagnetic propagation vector Q[AFM] = (1, 0, 1) (in orthorhombic notation) where e = 0.02-0.03 and is composition dependent. The results are consistent with the formation of a spin-density wave driven by Fermi surface nesting of electron and hole pockets and confirm the itinerant nature of m…
A mechanism for electronic phase separation in iron pnictides is proposed. It is based on the competition between commensurate and incommensurate spin-density-wave phases in a system with an imperfect doping-dependent nesting of a multi-sheeted Fermi surface. We model the Fermi surface by two elliptical electron pockets and three circular hole pockets. The interaction between a charge carrier in a hole band and a carrier in an electron band leads to the formation of spin-density-wave order. The commensurate spin density wave in the parent compound transforms to the incommensurate phase when do…
Magneto-optical imaging studies on a high-quality Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 single crystal partially patterned with a triangular array of holes reveal enhanced flux shielding in the patterned region of the sample. By mapping local magnetic field and shielding current density distributions at different applied magnetic fields and temperatures we determine the regime where pinning from the patterned holes dominates over the intrinsic pinning in the sample. In this regime, the flux density near the center of the patterned region is observed to increase when the applied field is varied from below the matching…
The electronic-structural modulations of Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Te$_2$ (0 $\leqq x\leqq$ 0.12) have been examined by resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) techniques at both the Ir and Te edges. Charge-density-wave-like superstructure with wave vectors of $\mathbf{Q}$=(1/5 0 $-$1/5), (1/8 0 $-$1/8), and (1/6 0 $-$1/6) are observed on the same sample of IrTe$_2$ at the lowest temperature, the patterns of which are controlled by the cooling speeds. In contrast, superstructures around $\mathbf{Q}$=(1/5 0 $-$1/5) are observed for doped samples (0.02 $\leq…
We present neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of lightly doped $La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}$, with $0 \leq x \leq? 0.035$. These reveal the evolution of the magnetism in this prototypical doped Mott insulator from a three dimensional (3D) commensurate (C) antiferromagnetic ground state, which orders at a relatively high TN, to a two dimensional (2D) incommensurate (IC) ground state with finite ranged static correlations, which appear below a relatively low effective TN. At low temperatures, the 2D IC magnetism co-exists with the 3D C magnetism for doping concentrations as low as ? 0.…
Quantum criticality nearby a certain magnetic phase transition beneath the superconducting dome of $\mathrm{Ba_{1-x}Na_xFe_2As_2}$ is attentively studied by virtue of a phenomenological theory in conjunction with renormalization group approach. We report that ordering competition between magnetic and superconducting fluctuations is capable of coaxing incommensurate (IC) magnetic states to experience distinct fates depending upon their spin configurations. The $C_2$-symmetry IC magnetic stripe with perpendicular magnetic helix dominates over other $C_2$-symmetry magnetic competitors and hints a…
We use inelastic neutron scattering to demonstrate that at low temperatures, the low frequency magnetic fluctuations in YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6} ($T_c=62.7$ K) are incommensurate, being found at positions displaced by $\pmδ$ ($0.057\pm 0.006$ r.l.u.) along the $[π,π]$ direction from the wave vector $(π,π)$ associated with the antiferromagnetic order of the parent insulator, YBa_2Cu_3O_{6}. The dynamical susceptibility $χ''(q,ω)$ at the incommensurate positions increases on cooling below $T_c$, accompanied by a suppression of magnetic fluctuations at the commensurate points.
Superconductivity in the iron pnictides develops near antiferromagnetism, and the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase appears to overlap with the superconducting phase in some materials such as BaFe2-xTxAs2 (where T = Co or Ni). Here we use neutron scattering to demonstrate that genuine long-range AF order and superconductivity do not coexist in BaFe2-xNixAs2 near optimal superconductivity. In addition, we find a first-order-like AF to superconductivity phase transition with no evidence for a magnetic quantum critical point. Instead, the data reveal that incommensurate short-range AF order coexists a…
We study the magnetic properties of Fe_1+y Te, a parent compound of the iron-based high-temperature superconductors. Motivated by recent neutron scattering experiments, we show that a spin-1 exchange model, supplemented by a single-ion spin anisotropy, accounts well for the experimentally observed low temperature magnetic phase diagram, that exhibits a commensurate bicollinear order at low Fe dopings (y < 0.12) and an incommensurate spin-spiral order at high Fe dopings (y > 0.12). We suggest that the commensurate-incommensurate transition at y = 0.12 is due to the competition between the excha…
Multiple charge density wave (CDW) phases in 2H-TaSe2 are investigated by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction. In a narrow temperature range immediately above the commensurate CDW transition, we observe a multi-q superstructure with coexisting commensurate and incommensurate order parameters, clearly distinct from the fully incommensurate state at higher temperatures. This multi-q ordered phase, characterized by a temperature hysteresis, is found both during warming and cooling, in contrast to previous reports. In the normal state, the incommensurate superstructure reflection gives w…
We develop a local spin model to explain the rich magnetic structures in the iron-based superconductors $Fe_{1+y}Te_{1-x}Se_x$. We show that our model exhibits both commensurate antiferromagnetic and incommensurate magnetic order along the crystal a-axis. The transition from the commensurate to the incommensurate phase is induced when the concentration of excess $Fe$ atoms is larger than a critical value. Experimentally measurable spin-wave features are calculated, and the mean-field phase diagram of the model is obtained. Our model also suggests the existence of a large quantum critical regio…
We study the effect of a magnetic field (applied along the c-axis) on the low-energy, incommensurate magnetic fluctuations in superconducting La(1.82)Sr(0.18)CuO(4). The incommensurate peaks at 9 meV, which in zero-field were previously shown to sharpen in q on cooling below T_c [T. E. Mason et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 1604 (1996)], are found to broaden in q when a field of 10 T is applied. The applied field also causes scattered intensity to shift into the spin gap. We point out that the response at 9 meV, though occurring at incommensurate wave vectors, is comparable to the commensurate mag…
The $t-U-V-J$ model is used to describe the positions of the experimental peaks associated with commensurate and incommensurate structure of the magnetic susceptibility probed by neutron scattering in cuprate compounds. Assuming that the tight-binding form of the mean-field electron energy and the maximum gap can be obtained by fitting the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data, we have determined the strengths of the on-site repulsive interaction $U$, the spin-independent attractive interaction $V$ and the spin-dependent antiferromagnetic interaction $J$ from the positions of …
Magnetic correlations in superconducting LiFeAs were studied by elastic and by inelastic neutron scattering experiments. There is no indication for static magnetic ordering but inelastic correlations appear at the incommensurate wave vector (0:5+-d 0:-+d 0) with d=0.07 slightly shifted from the commensurate ordering observed in other FeAs-based compounds. The incommensurate magnetic excitations respond to the opening of the superconducting gap by a transfer of spectral weight.
We have studied the magnetic excitations in impurity doped La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$Cu$_{1-y}$A$_{y}$O$_{4}$ (A=Ni or Zn) by neutron scattering. The dispersion for Zn:$y=0.017$ is similar to that for the impurity free sample: incommensurate peaks with the incommensurability $δ=0.12\pm0.01$ (rlu) do not change their positions up to 21 meV. On the other hand, for Ni:$y=0.029$, two incommensurate peaks observed at low energies suddenly change into a broad commensurate peak at $E_\mathrm{cross}=15$ meV. Compared to the impurity free sample with a similar Sr-concentration $x=0.16$, [B. Vignolle {\it e…
