The probability density functions (PDFs) for energy dissipation rates, created from time-series data of grid turbulence in a wind tunnel, are analyzed in a high precision by the theoretical formulae for PDFs within multifractal PDF theory which is constructed under the assumption that there are two main elements constituting fully developed turbulence, i.e., coherent and incoherent elements. The tail part of PDF, representing intermittent coherent motion, is determined by Tsallis-type PDF for singularity exponents essentially with one parameter with the help of new scaling relation whose validity is checked for the case of the grid turbulence. For the central part PDF representing both contributions from the coherent motion and the fluctuating incoherent motion surrounding the former, we introduced a trial function specified by three adjustable parameters which amazingly represent scaling behaviors in much wider area not restricted to the inertial range. From the investigation of the difference between two difference formulae approximating velocity time-derivative, it is revealed that the connection point between the central and tail parts of PDF extracted by theoretical analyses of PDFs is actually the boundary of the two kinds of instabilities associated respectively with coherent and incoherent elements.
An algorithm is described that can generate random variants of a time series or image while preserving the probability distribution of original values and the pointwise Holder regularity. Thus, it preserves the multifractal properties of the data. Our algorithm is similar in principle to well-known algorithms based on the preservation of the Fourier amplitude spectrum and original values of a time series. However, it is underpinned by a dual-tree complex wavelet transform rather than a Fourier transform. Our method, which we term the Iterated Amplitude Adjusted Wavelet Transform (IAAWT) method…
We study a correspondence between the multifractal model of turbulence and the Navier-Stokes equations in $d$ spatial dimensions by comparing their respective dissipation length scales. In Kolmogorov's 1941 theory the key parameter $h$, which is an exponent in the Navier-Stokes invariance scaling, is fixed at $h=1/3$ but is allowed a spectrum of values in multifractal theory. Taking into account all derivatives of the Navier-Stokes equations, it is found that for this correspondence to hold the multifractal spectrum $C(h)$ must be bounded from below such that $C(h) \geq 1-3h$, which is consist…
We compare different approaches towards an effective description of multi-scale velocity field correlations in turbulence. Predictions made by the operator product expansion, the so-called fusion rules, are placed in juxtaposition to an approach that interprets the turbulent energy cascade in terms of a Markov process of velocity increments in scale. We explicitly show that the fusion rules are a direct consequence of the Markov property provided that the structure functions exhibit scaling in the inertial range. Furthermore, the limit case of joint velocity gradient and velocity increment sta…

We present an extensive direct numerical simulation of statistically steady, homogeneous, isotropic turbulence in two-dimensional, binary-fluid mixtures with air-drag-induced friction by using the Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes equations. We choose parameters, e.g., the surface tension, such that we have a droplet of the minority phase moving inside a turbulent background of the majority phase. We characterize the deformation of the droplet and show that it displays multifractal dynamics. The probability distribution functions of the components of the acceleration of the center of mass of the dro…
In turbulent premixed flames, the fractal dimension of flame iso-surface is argued to be $\mathbb{D}=7/3$ for Damköhler's large-scale limit $(Da>>1)$ and $\mathbb{D}=8/3$ for Damköhler's small-scale limit $(Da\sim\mathcal{O}(1))$ based on heuristic scaling arguments. However, such scaling arguments do not consider the effect of the multifractal nature of turbulent kinetic energy dissipation on the flame surface. In this paper, we account for the effects of multifractal dissipation on the fractal dimension of low $Da$ turbulent premixed flames. We derive two corrections to the upper-limit of fr…
We introduce a wide family of stochastic processes that are obtained as sums of self-similar localized "waveforms" with multiplicative intensity in the spirit of the Richardson cascade picture of turbulence. We establish the convergence and the minimum regularity of our construction. We show that its continuous wavelet transform is characterized by stochastic self-similarity and multifractal scaling properties. This model constitutes a stationary, "grid free", extension of $\cal W$-cascades introduced in the past by Arneodo, Bacry and Muzy using wavelet orthogonal basis. Moreover our approach …
The active interaction between the bacteria and fluid generates turbulent structures even at zero Reynolds number. Velocity of such a flow obtained experimentally has been quantitatively investigated based on streamline segment analysis. There is a clear transition at about $16$ times of the organism body length separating two different scale regimes, which may be attributed to the different influence of the viscous effect. Surprisingly the scaling extracted from the streamline segment indicates the existence of scale similarity even at the zero Reynolds number limit. Moreover the multifractal…
We study the statistics of fluid (gas) density and concentration of passive tracer particles (dust) in compressible turbulence. We raise the question of whether the fluid density which is an active field that reacts back on the transporting flow and the passive concentration of tracers must coincide in the steady state, which we demonstrate to be crucial both theoretically and experimentally. The fields' coincidence is provable at small Mach numbers, however at finite Mach numbers the assumption of mixing is needed, not evident due to the possibility of self-organization. Irrespective of wheth…
Motivated by the modeling of three-dimensional fluid turbulence, we define and study a class of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) that are randomly stirred by a spatially smooth and uncorrelated in time forcing term. To reproduce the fractional, and more specifically multifractal, regularity nature of fully developed turbulence, these dynamical evolutions incorporate an homogenous pseudo-differential linear operator of degree 0 that takes care of transferring energy that is injected at large scales in the system, towards smaller scales according to a cascading mechanism. In the…
Cancellation exponent and multifractal structure in two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics: direct numerical simulations and Lagrangian averaged modeling
We investigate universality of the Eulerian velocity structure functions using velocity fields obtained from the stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) technique in experiments and the direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the Navier-Stokes equations. We show that the numerical and experimental velocity structure functions up to order 9 follow a log-universality; we find that they collapse on a universal curve, if we use units that include logarithmic dependence on the Reynolds number. We then investigate the meaning and consequences of such log-universality, and show that it is connec…
In this paper, an experimental velocity database of a bacterial collective motion , e.g., \textit{B. subtilis}, in turbulent phase with volume filling fraction $84\%$ provided by Professor Goldstein at the Cambridge University UK, was analyzed to emphasize the scaling behavior of this active turbulence system. This was accomplished by performing a Hilbert-based methodology analysis to retrieve the scaling property without the $β-$limitation. A dual-power-law behavior separated by the viscosity scale $\ell_ν$ was observed for the $q$th-order Hilbert moment $\mathcal{L}_q(k)$. This dual-power-la…
In the present work, an attempt is made to map the sensitivity of the existing zero pressure gradient (ZPG) turbulent boundary layer (TBL) wall-pressure spectrum models with different TBL parameters, and eventually, with different Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) turbulence models, simulated in OpenFOAM and ANSYS Fluent solvers. This study will help future researchers to choose a particular RANS turbulence model vis-à-vis a particular wall-spectrum model in order to obtain a reasonably accurate wind tunnel result predicting capability. First, the best-predicting pressure spectrum models …
We develop a stochastic model for the velocity gradients dynamics along a Lagrangian trajectory. Comparing with different attempts proposed in the literature, the present model, at the cost of introducing a free parameter known in turbulence phenomenology as the intermittency coefficient, gives a realistic picture of velocity gradient statistics at any Reynolds number. To achieve this level of accuracy, we use as a first modelling step a regularized self-stretching term in the framework of the Recent Fluid Deformation (RFD) approximation that was shown to give a realistic picture of small scal…
Motivated by interest in the geometry of high intensity events of turbulent flows, we examine spatial correlation functions of sets where turbulent events are particularly intense. These sets are defined using indicator functions on excursion and iso-value sets. Their geometric scaling properties are analyzed by examining possible power-law decay of their radial correlation function. We apply the analysis to enstrophy, dissipation, and velocity gradient invariants $Q$ and $R$ and their joint spatial distibutions, using data from a direct numerical simulation of isotropic turbulence at ${\rm Re…
Direct estimation of Lagrangian turbulence statistics is essential for the proper modeling of dispersion and transport in highly obstructed canopy flows. However, Lagrangian flow measurements demand very high rates of data acquisition, resulting in bottlenecks that prevented the estimation of Lagrangian statistics in canopy flows hitherto. We report on a new extension to the 3D Particle Tracking Velocimetry (3D-PTV) method, featuring real-time particle segmentation that outputs centroids and sizes of tracer particles and performed on dedicated hardware during high-speed digital video acquisiti…
Magnetohydrodynamic turbulence is central to laboratory and astrophysical plasmas, and is invoked for interpreting many observed scalings. Verifying predicted scaling law behaviour requires extreme-resolution direct numerical simulations (DNS), with needed computing resources excluding systematic parameter surveys. We here present an analytic generator of realistically looking turbulent magnetic fields, that computes 3D ${\cal{O}}(1000^3)$ solenoidal vector fields in minutes to hours on desktops. Our model is inspired by recent developments in 3D incompressible fluid turbulence theory, where a…
An extended inertial range dominated by the cross-helicity effects has been studied for forced (statistically steady) and for freely decaying magnetohydrodynamic MHD turbulence (with and without imposed/mean magnetic field) using the spatio-temporal distributed chaos approach. Good agreement with results of direct numerical simulations, laboratory measurements in MHD wind (plasma) tunnel, measurements in the Earth's magnetosheath and in the solar wind has been established. A spontaneous breaking of local reflection (mirror) symmetry has been briefly discussed for the MHD turbulence with zero a…
Riemann's non-differentiable function is one of the most famous examples of continuous but nowhere differentiable functions, but it has also been shown to be relevant from a physical point of view. Indeed, it satisfies the Frisch-Parisi multifractal formalism, which establishes a relationship with turbulence and implies some intermittent nature. It also plays a surprising role as a physical trajectory in the evolution of regular polygonal vortices that follow the binormal flow. With this motivation, we focus on one more classic tool to measure intermittency, namely the fourth-order flatness, a…
We study the impact of compressibility on two-dimensional turbulent flows, such as those modeling astrophysical disks. We demonstrate that the direction of cascade undergoes continuous transition as the Mach number Ma increases, from inverse at zero Ma, to direct at infinite Ma. Thus, at Ma of order one comparable amounts of energy flow from the scale of the pumping to large and small scales, in accord with previous data. For supersonic turbulence with large Ma, the cascade is direct, as in three dimensions, which results in multifractal density field. For compressible flows of conducting flui…
